Your sig

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you can use User:Soxred93/sig for transcluding your signature per Wikipedia:Signatures#Transclusion_of_templates, and thus I unprotected the page after another admin protected it. Please do not transclude your sig, thanks. « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 22:43, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

In case you didn't notice, I have been using that for months, and just been subst:ing it. Soxred93 (u t) 22:50, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Of course I didn't notice, I don't check users signatures. I saw it at WP:RFPP. I am just quoting the regulations and explaining that if you do it this way, then you do it at your own risk. I do have a question though, is there any specific reason you are doing this? I ask because the reason for most editors is length, but your sig doesn't appear to be that long. Just saying, it may just be better to throw the code into the signature box instead of transcluding and subst'ing. « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 23:08, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
I made that page because it's a whole lot easier to edit in an edit box than a one line box. Soxred93 (u t) 23:32, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Well Im not saying to get rid of the page, I mean edit it to what you like on that page, copy the text and paste it into the signature box. Than everything is cool. But whatever, there's really no way for anyone to make sure you are doing that, I just gave you fair warning and the understanding that we can't protect pages like those. Cheers, « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 00:08, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
You're partially right. I mean, ever since I've implemented it, it's gotten complaints. I suppose I could just use the plain text one. However, all three reasons WP:SIG say not to transclude do not apply here. Either way, I'll comply, to avoid dispute. Soxred93 (u t) 00:11, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, like I said, its no biggie to me, especially since your not transcluding the page directly. Sorry to sound like a rule-Nazi. :) Cheers, « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 00:13, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Dang it Godwin's law lol. « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 00:14, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 17:56, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm curious why you undid my 14:25, 23 April 2008 edit of this page at 15:24, 24 April 2008. Are you opposed to diffusion of Category:WikiProjects? Do you feel that this project doesn't belong in Category:Wikipedia WikiProjects? Some other reason? Or was this an accident? Respectfully yours, Stepheng3 (talk) 17:32, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

AGF, my friend, AGF. I accidentally edited an old revision from the page, when changing the admin backlog to a regular backlog. It wasn't only yours, it was many other's edits. I'll see what reports I accidentally removed are open proxies. Soxred93 (u t) 18:34, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. And sorry if my questions came across to you as assumption of bad faith. Based on the edit summary, I was just unclear what you were trying to accomplish. Stepheng3 (talk) 00:15, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Just a question, but why is your bot automatically marking me as offline when I am currently online? Cheers, Razorflame 19:05, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Probably because you haven't edited in the last 15 minutes.
Thanks for the help! Cheers, Razorflame 20:43, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

I've been creating a few articles for songs preformed by The Temptations. By accident, I've seem to have created two song acticles with this title (it's the same song from The Temptations group). Is there any way to merge these articles together? One with the title in quote marks has the chart info it needs (and footnotes), while the other one has all the other info.

Here's the link to the two articles that need merging:

"(Loneliness Made Me Realize) It's You That I Need"

(Loneliness Made Me Realize) It's You That I Need

Thank You--Halls452 (talk) 18:38, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

If you made the article and you're the only one who's edited it, put {{db-g7}} on the top of it. It appears that my bot has edited the first one, so it'd have to be the second one that gets the tag. That will then be deleted, and then you can click the "move" tab at the top to change the title. Good luck! (by the way, do I know you? Your name seems familiar...) Soxred93 (u t) 20:48, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't think so, but I have been around Wiki for the past few months. You may have seen my name in the history of some of the articles.--Halls452 (talk) 21:23, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Statusbot

Hey sox! I was just wondering what the time is on the status bot? I mean how long is it with no edit before you get marked as offline. At the moment i think it might be a bit to short. Anyway thanks. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 20:07, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

I also agree that its abeit short (I was just about to create a new header about it until I saw this). Right now it looks like 5mins (judgeing by my watchlist), I think you should set it to about 15 mins cause usually I am still online for at least that long until I make another edit.--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions|Guest) 01:09, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
15 minutes. It's the same as all the other statusbots, and I've gotten requests for both less and more. It stays currently, sorry. I'll see if anyone else wants it higher. Soxred93 (u t) 00:02, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Template sandboxes

Please do not have your bot clear the template sandboxes the moment they are edited (example). I need my edits to stay in the template sandboxes for at least a few minutes so that I can treat them like templates and see how they work. —Remember the dot (talk) 21:03, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, that was what my bot was approved to do. Why can't you use a user subpage? Soxred93 (u t) 00:02, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
I could, but if we made everyone use user subpages then we might as well delete the template sandboxes. —Remember the dot (talk) 03:37, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
As long as you do not remove the header, it will keep it there. (for 12 hours). Soxred93 (u t) 03:41, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

SoxBot IV

I disabled SoxBot IV because it was reverting too fast on Template:X6. I read the bot approval page and somebody pointed out then that it could be annoying if it auto-reverted when the header was removed. Perhaps add a delay? --MZMcBride (talk) 05:00, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

I have hit the enable button, changed the reset rate to 5 minutes, and instead of resetting, add the template to the top. That better? Soxred93 (u t) 05:15, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Question

May I ask why you (or rather, "SoxBot") are renaming categories that have only been posted at WP:CFD speedy section for a few hours? According to the guidelines, these categories need to be there for 48 hours before renaming occurs. Specifically, I'm referring to your rename of Category:Italian noble title to Category:Italian noble titles. I posted the request only 7 hours ago, and you've already performed the transfer and asked that the old category be deleted. Reign in the bot! Good Ol’factory (talk) 07:13, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Oy, I misread that timestamp. I guess that's why I have that userbox (reserves the right to screw up his edits). I'll try to look harder next time. 07:16, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Breegulls

You said in the past that my page was orphaned well in the past that was true but now it is not true so I took it off. If you have any questions or concern tell me at my talk page--Anfish (talk) 15:02, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Vitaminwater.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Vitaminwater.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:10, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Rfb participation thanks

Hello, Sox.

I wanted to personally thank you for taking part in the project-wide discussions regarding my candidacy for bureaucratship. After bureaucratic discussion, the bureaucrats decided that there was sufficient significant and varied opposition to my candidacy, and thus no consensus to promote. Although personally disappointed, I both understand and respect their decision, especially in light of historical conservatism the project has had when selecting its bureaucrats. If you have any further suggestions or comments as to how you think I could help the project, please let me know. Good luck with the BAG; with all the flux that is there now, it looks like it may take some time for it to settle out. Once again, thank you for your support. -- Avi (talk) 17:38, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Can you take a look at Wikipedia talk:Sandbox?

I am a bit confused with a series of edits by the bot preceding this one. Is this normal? Just thought of dropping a line. Nothing urgent. Thanks. Prashanthns (talk) 19:17, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

The sandbox talk heading was "reset" with the sandbox heading, and the bot corrected it. WODUP 19:53, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

SoxBot V lag

It's been almost 18 hours now, and still nothing. WODUP 20:18, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
It's been several hours for me too. I added [[Category:Wikipedians who use StatusBot]] to my userpage at 22:46 UTC today [1], and haven't gotten my statuspage created by the bot yet. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 03:13, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Hmm...Soxred93 (u t) 10:56, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
I think there might be a problem with the bot not being able to make new statuspages, once mine and WODUP's statuspages were made, SoxBot V started updating them. (it does make new LastEdit pages on it's own, though) Calvin 1998 (t-c) 03:46, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Weird. Thank you, Calvin! WODUP 03:54, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Is SoxBot V and II meant to mark Chris G Bot 3's edits to offline? I know Chris G Bot 3 is meant for the IRC which I log in from time to time.Antonio Lopez (talk) 01:45, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
If you want to use Chris G Bot 3, remove the category from your userpage. Soxred93 (u t) 01:57, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

SoxBot IV

Has been appending the heading when an incorrect related heading is already there.[2] The similar heading should be deleted. 209.244.43.113 (talk) 03:32, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

My bot is actually appending the correct header, because it's the one designed for talk pages. Soxred93 (u t) 01:58, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
It's not that it is using the wrong header, it's that it should remove the incorrect double that was there before the edit. We don't need two headers. 209.244.43.113 (talk) 04:16, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello again. The Highly Active Users project has gone through a complete revamping per popular demand. We believe this new format will make it easier for new editors to find assistance. However, with the new format, I must again ask you to verify your information on this page. I attempted to translate the data from the old version to the new, but with the extensive changes, I may have made some errors. Thanks again. Useight (talk) 04:28, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

StatusBot update window

I just wanted to add my voice to this discussion in requesting a slightly longer window than 15 minutes, perhaps 20 to 30 minutes. if there were a way to customize it, that would be even better! Great work, by the way. xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 04:29, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Of course if consensus remains at 15 minutes, you could point future requesters to a workaround I've come up with -
{{ #switch: {{User:StatusBot/Status/Xenocidic}}
 | online=online
 | offline={{ #ifexpr: ({{#time:U}}-{{#time:U|{{User:StatusBot/Status/Xenocidic/LastEdit}}}}) > 7200 | offline |
           {{ #ifexpr:  ({{#time:U}}-{{#time:U|{{User:StatusBot/Status/Xenocidic/LastEdit}}}}) > 1800 | recent  | online }}
           }}
}}

Presently - returns "online" if status bot says so or last edit was within 30 minutes (1800 seconds). returns "recent" if last edit was within 2 hours (7200 seconds). else - returns "offline".
Credit is due to User:CBM for helping me convert the LastEdit to seconds. xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 20:27, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Now codified in {{Truestatus}}. xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 15:53, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Another thing about SoxBot V

Sorry to be bothering you again about it, but is there a reason why the /LastEdit pages are always updated with the second-to-last edit instead of the LastEdit? See history of my LastEdit page vs. Special:Contributions/Calvin 1998. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 01:55, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion for SoxBotVI

How about you add a string that causes the bot to check and see if the usernames of the requesting account and the old username match? about half of all CHU requests that go unfulfilled do so because an IP is posting in place of a user. -Jéské (v^_^v E pluribus unum) 02:54, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Editing image source

Hi,

I'm totally new here and appreciate your offer to help. This is really elemental, but I've looked around and can't find an answer to my question, which is this:

I've uploaded two pictures but apparently didn't properly document the source, (which is me) and the pictures are going to be deleted. How do I edit the picture so that it meets Wikipedia's standard for source documentation?

The picture is sangay.jpg

Like I said - elemental!

I have a question for you. Do you think you could possibly attempt to set up the automatically updating status system on the Simple English Wikipedia like you have it set up here? Help page patrol

Hi Soxred93. As you're listed listed on Wikipedia:Help Page Patrol, I thought you might be interested in a discussion regarding the use of the {{resolved}} template. Editors have argued that it slows the loading time down through the use of graphics in particular, and also it is sometimes incorrectly placed, leaving some editors with an incomplete or incorrect response. Please express your thoughts at Wikipedia talk:Help desk#Recent constant use of the resolved template. Thanks, and keep up the good work. PeterSymonds (talk) 17:08, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Soxbot V

Hey. Did Soxbot V die? Just thought I would tell you if you didnt notice. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 07:54, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it got a segfault. I'm working on fixing it. Soxred 93 10:46, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
ah, that clears it up. I was worried I had insulted it by changing my status manually last night. ;> oh, and happy birthday =) xenocidic (talk) 15:27, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Fixed. Soxred 93 15:30, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
It's still not making any edits, does it need restarted or something? xenocidic (talk) 19:12, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Bot won't work

I've been waiting an hour for the bot to list me as online, but it only reports "somewhere". What should I do? I followed all of the instructions, and it's still broken. I even logged myself off and tried again. Please help me on my talk page! Limetolime talk to me look what I did! 21:14, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Linking the alongside" field

Hey Soxred - any progress on this? Sarcasticidealist (talk) 21:17, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh right, I'll have to find some time to squeeze it in. Soxred 93 22:21, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! Sarcasticidealist (talk) 22:21, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Happy birthday fellow Wikipedian!

RE:Enable

Yes I was displeased with it. It says I am offline when I am online. SexyAirEagle 01:05, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Just because you're displeased doesn't mean to disable it. That's reserved for malfunctioning bots. It was marking you as offline because you didn't edit within the last 15 minutes (that's how the bot determines it). Soxred 93 01:30, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
You do realize, Wikieditor222, you disrupted at length the functioning of a perfectly good bot used by literally hundreds of users? If you want to customize the time intervals, I would suggest using {{Truestatus}} or {{Statustop}}. xenocidic (talk) 02:14, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
I was wondering why it wasn't updating..— dαlusT@lk / Improve\ Contribs 05:32, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Image:BUCRSeal.JPG

Hi! Your bot tagged my image uploaded image orphan. Yes it is not actively used yet because I'm still writing the article it's right here. I'm about to finish the article soon. But I don't want the tagged any longer there. I'll just try to use the image somewhere. Thanks for the heads-up though. Monzonda c",) 08:18, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

The bot doesn't actually run for the next 2 weeks, so you can youk on it until then. Good luck! Soxred 93 10:51, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Internode.jpg

I have express written permission from Simon hackett (CEO of Internode) stating that i may use the internode logo on my ISP userbox which is both imformatice and decorative. Please get your bot to leave the logo, and the userboxes using it alone. Prom3th3an (talk) 15:18, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi,

I note that you have reverted my good faith revert of the bot removal of the fair use image from {{New South Wales Police Force}}.

I also note your comments at Wikipedia:Help desk#Non free use image in template problem..

I am aware of the template exclusion for fair use images but thought there was an exemption for when the image depicted the legal personality which held the rights to the image.

The image in question could be used on each page the template is being used on. So why cannot the image appear in a template which provides the common information to the pages. This is what templates are for.

Please note that there are other templates like this one, so their image use might also need checking. See Category:Snapshotinfoboxes.

What information do you need for me convince you (and others) that an exemption should be made for templates like this, that is, templates which contain tangible encycyclopedic content?

I could work around the problem by putting the relevant material into main spaces and transcluding it using : perfixes. However, I should not have to do this from a fair use aspect, because the material is being used identically, whether it is in a template in template space, in a "template" in main space, or repeated in each article in main space.

I believe we could put a direct and attributed quote into a template, so why not an image ?

Alternatively, perhaps the whole template could be managed as fair use content once it has a fair use image content in it ?

I will not have Internet access for 2 or 3 days, so I will not be able to get back to you quickly regarding any comments about the above you may have.

However, I would like to find a way of putting encylcopedic content into templates, including images.

Regards.

Soxbot V again

I think it stopped again. Run page = enable. You got memory leaks or something? ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 23:30, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Well yes, but actually, it was killed by the toolserver admins (They killed all processes, I believe). I'm trying ot move to ClueNet, but their crontab isn't working. Soxred 93 00:39, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Ahh ok. You think it will be able to do the move soon? Maybe you need somewhere else for it to go for a few weeks or something? ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 08:01, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Nah, it's ok. I know it's not a ClueNet priority. Soxred 93 15:01, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

"Non Administrator emergency shutoff" (SoxBot V)

Is this standard for bots? I'm thinking it might be best if this ability wouldn't be as visibly advertised, as already twice in the past week a newer user has disabled the bot. xenocidic (talk) 16:13, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

I would estimate that about 30% of all bots have them, but yes, they are used. Soxred 93 16:34, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
I suppose I'm just not seeing how exactly this particular bot could run so amok that it required a non-admin shutoff, it is pretty much confined to the subspace of User:StatusBot. Perhaps adding some <!-- hidden text --> trying to prevent newbies futzing with it when their status indicator isn't working because they haven't yet created their status subpage? (on that note, is it possible to tweak the bot to automagically do this for them?). xenocidic (talk) 16:39, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
The bot won't recognize it, and it could confuse others even more. Soxred 93 16:42, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Yea, I figured as much... oh well, I'll just keep an eye on the page. xenocidic (talk) 16:45, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
