I am tempted to take this one off my watchlist. I have no personal connection to the subject, but find I am reacting to attempts to whitewash the article by restoring the material with more explicit descriptions of the criticism of the organization. Maybe best to turn away. Aymatth2 (talk) 00:36, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
- No!. please don't give up. We need editors of your calibre to keep an eye on the article. Also, the more diverse the background of editors reverting the whitewashing, the less the probability of the whitewashers cooking up a conspiracy to "defame" their organisation.--Sodabottle (talk) 03:37, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Chief Minister page
I understand that this page shouldn't be updated until the new CM is sweared in. But in terms of left office, I was under the impression that indicates the date of resignation. Since MK resigned on 05/13, I updated that date on the page. Let me know if you feel otherwise. Thanks, --Nader85021 (talk) 20:45, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

- I've made a few changes and expanded Sivaji Ganesan. Currently it is rated as a stub class. It deserves a C-class. --Thalapathi (Ping Back) 10:52, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- you cant ask someone to review an article and hint what class it deserves. If i now go and rate it and mark it as C-class, it will be taken as collusion and canvassing. In the future i suggest, word your notifications completely neutral--Sodabottle (talk) 14:43, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

2 surviving classical language?
I have some questions 1.Does the link mention what is the second classical language? 2.If it mention Sanskrit there, then the question is if Tamil is just a surviving language and NOT living language? 3.Though Kannada and Telugu are not considered as classical in international academic levels the Indian gvt made a political move of declaring them as classic. So if these languages have to be considered as a classic from an academic point of view then there are 4 classical languages. So why should the reference 2 exist in this article?
The difference of opinion in Sanskrit page is about it's dead or surviving status and not about dead or alive status. So your opinion that sanskrit is a surviving language is purely your individual opinion

Tamil
Hi Sodabottle. I would like to make myself clear. I am trying to keep as simple and neutral as possible. I beleive it is a must must must "Tamil is one of the two longest surviving classical languages in India" -- This statement is extremely simple & neutral and yet declares the point also, as per the source, so ONLY it should be allowed. Since other users differ no need to go for a change. He/She might simply raise issues. But point is clear and simple. Please dont have double-standards here. I have had enough; when I try to edit true facts with significance you told one or the other many reasons, that is editorial views, newspapers article cannot be taken as a proper source etc.,.. But when coming with a clear mandate just because others raise issues why to go back. Absolutely no need to check back. Dont have double-standards. When doing one, you ask for two. When bringing two, you ask for four. Please do understand it. I want to change it again. ---- Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 08:47, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
- i have reverted some of your additions, modified some and agreed with some. Dont paint the picture that i am out to get you and i have some sort of beef with you. You have been insulting me like this for some time. I am slightly amused that you think, i am out to get you. guess what - I am not.
- Coming back to the current issue: Arun's point is valid - there are contentions what is a classical language in india, and what is a "surviving language". both dont directly relate to our article. The wording you used looked fine and neutral to me till Arun raised the concern. I checked the other articles and saw no consensus exists for how many to call as "classical languages of india". Since Tamil language article is not the place to debate it, i pared it down. I guess you are peeved because the "longest" descriptor has now gone out. But we cannot keep the "two longest surviving classical languages" because of the points raised in the talk page. Here is the thing - discuss with Arun in the talk page and arrive at a line you can both agree at and which doesn't drag sanskrit or other classical language debates into this page.--Sodabottle (talk) 08:56, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Image/spelling of Keralan mythic figure "Kutti Chattan"?
Greetings, it was suggsted to me that you may be able to help find images of the mythical figure Kutti Chattan? And/or, provide his local-language name spelling so I can search for it under that term. This would be to add to the "Supernatural" section of the article Nair. Thanks much for any advice you can offer! MatthewVanitas (talk) 22:59, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- It is usually written as "kutti chathan" or "kuttichathaan". the tamil transliteration is ”குட்டிச்சாத்தான்” and the malayalam one is "കുട്ടിച്ചാത്തൻ". They are usually (but not always) written as a single word (kuttichathaan). Image searches usually yield stills from the popular 1984 movie My Dear Kuttichathan. There is a Kuthichathan festival /dance form involving kuttichathaan in kerala and the relevant article in Malayalam wikipedia is this (kuttichathan theyyam). It has a couple of commons images which can be useful. If you need other related images, drop a note in the ML wiki's village pump - they have a robust open source culture there and provide lots of images to commons. they might be able to help--Sodabottle (talk) 04:27, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
- Oh we have a page for the ritual/festival - Theyyam. The one involving kuttichathan is called "kuttichathan theyyam". There are two images for this in commons [1] and [2]. The photographer is User:Anoopan a very experienced malayalam wikipedian, so he might be able to help with any other related images too.--Sodabottle (talk) 04:34, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Answers to your claim that iam initiating edit war
1) http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=J._Jayalalithaa&action=historysubmit&diff=434791233&oldid=434790873 This link given clearly shows that I have provided all the necessary references and added lots of valid information. But the user is smartly trying to make excuse to block me and removing information from the wiki article on Jayalalithaa. Dont know whether this user Sodabottle is an anti Jaya, but its a blame on me that iam reverting. Iam searching for an interview which was telecast on Jaya TV of an eminent journalist and director (Chitra Lakshmanan) on 16th June 2011 saying Jaya was not born in Mysore but in Sriranagam. 2) Also do read this para.. In her 2011 campaign, she will be focusing on corruption. With DMK’s A Raja jailed in connection with the 2G scam, Karunanidhi may find it tough to counter her allegations. Opponents may ask whether she has any locus standi to speak about corruption since she herself has been an accused in many cases. “The DMK foisted some 11 cases over her. She has been acquitted in nine of those. She is fighting the remaining cases,” says Cho, who rates Amma as the best bet for Tamil Nadu politics. source http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_jayalalithaa-mother-of-comebacks_1524790Paglakahinka (talk) 17:28, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

- Thanks for the support guys. I am a little bit amused. This is my first block after 20 months, admin flags in two other wiki projects and nearly 50000 edits. Guess it had to happen sometime :-). There was nothing serious about the issue. Run of the mill fanboy additions by Pagalakahinka were happening to the article for a month now and i was trying to bring him to the discussion page repeatedly. The first revert i made yesterday and when i started reverting today, it wasnt on my mind. I wasnt able to get him to understand WP:BRD and had to make him see the point by reverting. With Abhishek's help, i was able to do that. I wouldn't have knowingly exceeded 3rr or wouldnt have gamed the system. Well the loss of rollback feature would be an inconvenience. I will go quietly sit in the corner for the next 24 hours. Thanks again for the kind words. Can someone take a look at the jayalalitha talk page?. After the block expires, i am going to take it off my watchlist and wouldnt go near it again. --Sodabottle (talk) 20:17, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

- Please check the time stamps again, the first revert was yesterday - outside the 24 hour mark. For both of us involved a day has passed between the 1st revert and the 2nd revert. I never thought i would be breaking 3rr. Today we both reverted 3 times and stopped before we broke 3rr. I did 3 reverts today while trying my best to bring the user to the discussion - check my talk page, his talk page and the article talk page. And the worst part is the reverting is over now - we are both engaging in a talk page discussion, which has resulted in additional people getting involved. Essentially this block has become punitive and unnecessary for both of us - when the BRD system is working as it should be --Sodabottle (talk) 19:51, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- This is known as "gaming the system." First, you intentionally went to 3 reverts second you made 4 reverts because one of them was directly outside of the 24 hour period. Please read WP:Edit warring, especially the part that says "Any appearance of gaming the system by reverting a fourth time just outside the 24-hour slot is likely to be treated as a 3RR violation." Ryan Vesey (talk) 20:03, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- That certainly wasnt my intention. The first revert was yesterday for both of us involved. So it was not on my mind when i started reverting today. But i certainly did know i was pushing upto the 3rd revert today. Second, the user was not coming to the discussion page - he was insisting on adding disputed content without discussion - how am i to bring him to the discussion page without reverting?. Which thankfully i was able to do without breaking 3rr.--Sodabottle (talk) 20:07, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- You don't bring him to the discussion page by reverting. You create the discussion on the talk page, warn the user for edit warring and follow the guidelines in dispute resolution. Ryan Vesey (talk) 20:17, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

- The problem was he wasnt coming to the discussion page after multiple reverts by multiple users over a month now. After the first revert today, i tried to bring him to the talk page by pointing out BRD. But he claimed he will add the info back and wont discuss the issue in the talk page. Even after a non-involved user asked him to discuss it first, he readded the information. I could have filed for a DR process, but i chose to use the full leeway given by 3rr before doing that. If he had reverted me again, i certainly would have gone to DR and get other users involved. I dont usually get involved in edit wars - gaming or proper. I was honestly trying to bring an ongoing issue (for a month now) to conclusion by being forceful with the other editor.--Sodabottle (talk) 20:23, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

You were blocked for edit warring not WP:3RR. Yes, you were discussing your edit war, but you were continuing it while you were discussing it. You should discuss instead of edit warring. Toddst1 (talk) 20:41, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Sodabottle, I have unblocked you per your explanation above that you had no intention of violating 3RR or gaming the system (and I can't go around seeing you blocked!). Do note, however, that deliberately manipulating the 24 hr mark in reversions is construed as gaming the system so the original block by Toddst1 was technically correct (though a warning would have equally well have done the trick and would have achieved the same effect without being punitive).--rgpk (comment) 20:45, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

And can someone please unblock the other guy too. He stopped after i gave him a 3rr warning. And i believe he was not aware of our editwarring and 3rr rules. So while i was knowingly pushing 3rr, he wasn't. Now that he has started discussing in the talk page, i believe he wont do this again int he future.--Sodabottle (talk) 20:55, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Rollbacker
Due to your involvement in an edit war on J. Jayalalithaa, I have revoked your rollback privileges. Toddst1 (talk) 19:36, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- Can you please point out where i have misused my rollback rights ?. I have repeatedly tried to bring the user to the discussion page and discussed with him across multiple talk pages. And we both never exceeded 3rr - a discussion is going on in the talk page where other editors are also getting involved. I request you to reconsider this revoking--Sodabottle (talk) 19:40, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- Removal of rollback is pretty much perfunctory for an edit war block, whether the war involved rollback, undoing or editing. Toddst1 (talk) 19:45, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- Is there a policy page for this?. I am very conscious about using my rollback rights and havent abused them so far. I believe i haven't broken 3rr. I did one revert yesterday, and 24 hours later did 3. Stopped there. All the while trying to bring the other user to the talk page - and i succeeded in it. I have had a clean block log for 20 months in en wiki now and have had only once been got any sort of warning before. I believe revoking my rollback rights is unnecessary and harsh.--Sodabottle (talk) 19:58, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- And please clarify on one more thing - if i lose my rollbacker rights over this, can i still use the rollback option in twinkle? or would it be construed as gaming the system? I have been doing a fair bit of anti vandalism. So i would like to know if using twinkle rollback after getting stripped of rollbacker rights is forbidden--Sodabottle (talk) 20:40, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Blocked for WP:GAME
Per your duplicitous comments on User talk:RegentsPark, I have blocked you for 24 hours. Own your actions and avoid the disruption next time. Toddst1 (talk) 22:39, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- Toddst, this is completely unacceptable. you, unable to accept your own mistake of blocking Sodabottle without giving him a warning, and blocking him again for some vague reasons is beyond the pale. i am pretty confident this will get you into trouble. --CarTick (talk) 22:41, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- This is now getting silly. Per WP:GAME - "However, Wikipedia sanctions are meant to be preventative, not punitive. A warning from an administrator is usually the best way to prevent gaming, because a clear warning should help correct both good faith mistakes and bad faith games. If an editor ignores a warning and repeats their behavior, or if they find new creative ways to achieve the same disruption, it is more likely that they are gaming the system in bad faith." As I have said at RegentPark's TP, Sodabottle is not edit warring now (if ever) and, since that was the cause of the original block then I fail to see how s/he can now be gaming. - Sitush (talk) 22:46, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- No warning is necessary if a partisan to an edit war has issued their edit-war opponent a warning - the purpose of a warning is to make the person aware of a policy in hopes that they will stop the disruption. If the person is issuing such warnings, they're rather aware of the issue. In the case of Sodabottle, he warned about slow-mo edit wars, then after release of the block feigns no knowledge of such, attempting to twist the rules after it was pointed out that he was being duplicitous[8]. Enough! Toddst1 (talk) 22:48, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- And where is the block notice that would allow an appeal? - Sitush (talk) 22:50, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- You're being pedantic. The instructions are above and this editor has already demonstrated s/he knows how to appeal. Toddst1 (talk) 22:54, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

- (edit conflict) with below. I have seen a lot of blocks lately, mainly due to some awkward editors at Nair. In every instance I have seen, even when the prior block notice is immediately above the current event, the admin has inserted a notice for the current event. Honest. - Sitush (talk) 22:57, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

- Toddst stop mischaracterising what i said. When did i feign unawareness of slo-mo edit war?. I believed it was frowned upon and was not a blockable offense. I thought only exceeding 3rr was a blockable offense. And i have said this multiple times.--Sodabottle (talk) 22:58, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Request reason:
I have been blocked again for saying i was unaware of policy and i will not repeat the mistake again. This is unfair. I have even disengaged from the article in question and assured the unblocking admin this mistake wont be repeated in the future. Toddst just blocked me again for trying to explain what happened in the unblocking admin's talk page. This is the reply/ explanation i provided. Toddst is convinced i am gaming the system and unwilling to own it up - which i am definitely NOT. --Sodabottle (talk) 22:55, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

it is a shame that Toddst managed to make it look like it is all your fault while he is at fault for both the blocks. his unblock edit summary is deceptive as he appears to suggest there is mixed opinion about his block while in fact, there is only one opinion which is that he is at fault and you deserve a better line there. you are also being too humble and tolerant. --CarTick (talk) 16:21, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- To be fair, one other editor (non admin) who hangs around in ANI agreed with him that i am lying and even suggested 24 hours was too generous. And another one made a comment that could be taken as support for the block. At this point, i would not prefer not to escalate and behave as i would if i got hauled up by the Indian police - never ever talk back to the them. :-). All said and done - i want to be able to edit en wiki for a few more years . Why jeapordise that?--Sodabottle (talk) 16:48, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- i dont think anything you have done even comes close to jeopardising your chance of editing wiki for as long as you want; speaking for yourself will certainly not. i believe the other two editors who supported him did not investigate the issue in detail. by custom, ANI contributors appear to be giving good faith support to other admins and even more so when the issue is raised by themselves. i understand your desire to put the past behind and move on. cheers. --CarTick (talk) 16:58, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

- Thats okay Ravi. The "debut" text was originally added by Wiki San Roze, i think i only added t. s. baliah to the list - though there could be more who got introduced by dungan--Sodabottle (talk) 04:24, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Hi! An anonymous user is repeatedly adding some badly written and poorly sourced stuff like this in Madurai article. I've blanked the two sections "Religious Heads in Madurai" and "The City that never sleeps" but the user keeps adding it again. Can you please keep an eye on the article? And by the way, will it be wise to ask for semi-protection.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 09:10, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- Unfortunately i can't. As you can see from above, i have just had two blocks in quick succession for edit warring - after trying to do a similar thing in J. Jayalalitha. And i have been accused of gaming the system and lying too. Lets say i am peeved a bit and have decided to keep away from anything that remotely resembles an edit war - even for obvious reverts like you are mentioning. Being bold got me into the current soup :-). I suggest you start a talk page discussion and establish a consensus that those are unencyclopedic / uncited etc and then remove the sections. . --Sodabottle (talk) 09:27, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, I came to know that you had been blocked twice from your talk page discussions. But I didn't known what had exactly happened. But it appears that the mistake was User:Toddst1's and he has unblocked you.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 12:29, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

For the record
Well, that was interesting. The ease with which some admins use the block button never ceases to amaze me (I'm constitutionally unable to use it in almost all cases!). For the record, you shouldn't have been blocked in the first place. You were not in violation of 3RR, and anyone who had taken a few minutes to review your history would have immediately seen that a note on the talk page would have ended the edit war. Blocks are not meant to be punitive and should be used only to prevent disruption or "imminent or continuing damage" to the project, neither of which apply in this case. The second block is disappointing (and egregious) because, though it is certainly possible that the admin did not mean it that way, it seemed to arise out of pique. The unfortunate outcome of bad blocks is that they lessen the pleasure that an editor gets from their activities on wikipedia and ends up decreasing their interest in the project but I hope that's not what you'll take away from all this. Focus instead on the fact that there are many editors here who appreciate the work you do and I hope you'll continue to be the stellar editor that you've always been (and that we see you in the admin corps sooner rather than later). --rgpk (comment) 13:45, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the kind words Regents.!! The whole experience is disappointing and enthusiasm sapping. Worst part is getting accused of lying. I thought people would show some good faith, when someone with my record explains something. With this block log any potential RfA would be an interesting exercise in "have you stopped beating your wife" :-). But anyway, i wasnt interested in becoming an admin here as i have a narrow knowledge and understanding of our vast policy apparatus (as the above events show). I have my hands full with handling the tools in Tamil wiki projects. Thanks again for your support. I will be hanging around but will take sometime to get the old mojo back--Sodabottle (talk) 13:57, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

- it really amazes me how you manage to do all these. --CarTick (talk) 17:01, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- Actually the jobs are less stressful there - the focus is more on moving/merging/deleting than anti vandalism. In Ta wiki we get at most 10 vandal/disruptive edits a day (out of a total 1000). And the number of active admins is also high - any given week a dozen of us are around and we can manage the lesser work load amongst ourselves. Most importantly there is no drama - no edit waring, wheel warring or tit for tatting. Everyone knows everyone else by name and a lot of us are friends personally (advantages of a small pond :-)), thus we work out things without much trouble. In my 9 months i have had to block only once for a personal attack (that too a troll account). --Sodabottle (talk) 17:08, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- Yup, I've been in English Wikibooks and Tamil Wikipedia for quite sometime. They are, definitely, not as demanding as English Wikipedia is. You may write an article on something and you will find weeks later that no one had edited it. I am yet to see any sort of blatant vandalism on Tamil Wikipedia, except for some occasional POV-pushing in caste articles.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 04:10, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi do you have any books containing data about Filmfare Awards South (especially Tamil). I managed to fill up the table from 1972 to 1986 and the data from 1996 to present seems fine. But can't find award winners starting from 1987 till 1995. --Commander (Ping Me) 06:27, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Rajaji
I feel it would it be good if a picture of Rajaji in his youth be added to one of the first two sections in C. Rajagopalachari. I remember having seen a photo of Rajaji as a young lawyer in Salem (circa 1900) somewhere on the web as well as a book in Landmark but the website has closed down and I do not know whether it is worthwhile to purchase a book just for the sake of a picture. Hi, I had a quick question on the A. K. Chettiar article you created. For the statement, "Chettiar first published a Tamil magazine called Dhanavanigan in Burma when he was twenty years old," which source supports this? Is it "Revathi. Mu (1997) A. K. Chettiar - Tamil valartha saandrorgal" listed at the end of the paragraph? Thanks! OCNative (talk) 13:29, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Is this for DYK? . The source for "twenty years old" is the book by "Revathi. Mu". It is a tamil book without ISBN and unfortunately i didnt note down the page nos when i took notes from it. It mentions 1930 as the year when he started the magazine and he was twenty when he did it. However, this is confirmed by two other online sources - A text book lesson on journals here and the AK chettiar entry in the encylopaedia of indian literature - the mag is mention as "Thanavanigan", the year is not mentioned explicitly here but it states chettiar met X in 1930 in one line and in the next states "soon afterwards he bought out his own magazine thanavanigan". But taken together with the other ref, which gives the year of start of publication for thanavanigan as 1930, i believe we have online verification for the hook. The year isn't mentioned explicitly. I have added the first ref to the article now. --Sodabottle (talk) 14:05, 24 June 2011 (UTC).
- It is indeed for DYK. You can see the nomination there. I have copied the appropriate refs to that particular sentence. Please feel free to fix it or to let me know if I've made an erroneous modification. Thanks! OCNative (talk) 01:22, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

He has had more than 30 confirmed and 30 suspected sockpuppets over four years to add false info (unsourced pov and when challenged falsification of sources). He continues to do so every few months using a new id or using a dynamic IP. The info he is changing in Chera dyanasty is POV, false and has been discussed and rejected in the talk page. It is not the "i hate XXx" variety vandalism, but subtle long term falsification of data vandalism. He has done this across a variety of articles. Gemini Ganesan
Hi, some user moved the page to "Gemini Ganeshan". Is that the correct one. Most of his old movies credit his name as "Gemini Ganesh". --Commander (Ping Me) 18:08, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
- older movies credit him as ”ஜெமினி கணேஷ்” and later movies (i guess from late 50s) credit him as ”ஜெமினி கணேசன்”. So it should be either Gemini Ganesh or Gemini Ganesan.--Sodabottle (talk) 18:09, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
- Also, is "MGR" the actual screen name, or it became more prevalent after his political entry. Another user had removed the Tamil translitertion of "MGR" (at the top of infobox). --Commander (Ping Me) 18:14, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, MGR is used only in a few films - the post 1970 ones; the vast majority feature the full name "எம். ஜி. ராமச்சந்திரன்”--Sodabottle (talk) 18:20, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
- The name MGR was given by Tamils isn't it? If so it can be mentioned in the infobox right. --Commander (Ping Me) 18:24, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
- I dont think transliteration is necessary here in the infobox. The native script is usually included as a valid search tag or to give an idea, how a name is spelled in the native script. And it is enough if it is mentioned somewhere once in the article. Adding them to multiple places is usually (no official policy exists) frowned upon.--Sodabottle (talk) 18:30, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
Help with stats for Madurai

- whether the doc is referring the city or the district
- the reliability of the estimates
- is it a social or a political issue rather than a growth in population
- have the figures been synthesised or otherwise manipulated (in good faith) by the contributor.
