I think it might be a good idea to revoke talk page access here as well, given that the user is abusing it. JeffSpaceman (talk) 15:42, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - pipped to it by JBW.  —Smalljim  15:46, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Evening,

I've reinstated the block on Jerrykolt123 as despite your comment they went back to editing the article with no discussion. Blocked the other user as well as no valid exemption I could see to WP:3RR and they'd been warned enough. Amortias (T)(C) 18:58, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Amortias, for dealing with that for me. I really shouldn't take time off!  —Smalljim  21:59, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Blocks

[edit]

Hey, thanks for the recent blocks you've done of accounts with with doxxing in the username. However, please can you not create a talk page for those accounts when you block them? It just spreads the username around even more places for the OS team to suppress. Thanks! stwalkerster (talk) 21:13, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's remembering to change the defaults - but will do!  —Smalljim  21:30, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

186.111.163.113

[edit]

Please block this IP. Warned three times, appears to be vandalism-only. Thank you. 2003 LN6 19:54, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 2003LN6. I'll block if I see them make another bad edit, but sometimes the warnings work!  —Smalljim  20:13, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@2003 LN6: You could also consider changing the appearance of your sig so that it's easy for people trying to ping you or refer to you to see what your username actually is. As you see, my first attempt above failed because I misread it. Hope this helps.  —Smalljim  20:21, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@User:Smalljim:Thank you! There's also a large backlog at WP:AIV, it would be great if you could help out! 2003 LN6 20:23, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Jim, those Egyptian/North African IPs are proxies. You can safely hard block them for a nice long time so that the intended target can't cycle back through previous IPs. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:33, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ta. Will do.  —Smalljim  19:34, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IP6 Italia

[edit]

Not sure what do hard to detect and block and they appear to have flexible resources to move around. -- GreenC 17:22, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@GreenC: yes, large range blocks are tricky for this one, but a combination of factors should make it possible to reliably spot the edits - and the more they make, the more evidence they provide :)  —Smalljim  21:48, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Great. Do you want me to continue reporting IPs? -- GreenC 00:17, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, on the assumption that you'll keep reverting them I can get the data from your contributions, so no, there's no need, thanks. And hopefully there may be even less need in future :)  —Smalljim  09:37, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sock again.

[edit]

Hi, Jim. The user account User:WelshDragoon19 I assume, is a sock that is making mass reverts on the page Vivienne Martin (actress). Is it possible for you to block the account and protect the page? I added a report on RPP. Thanks. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 19:39, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I see that you have blocked the account for 31 hours. Given the sockpuppetry at play here, it might be a good idea to up the block to an indef. JeffSpaceman (talk) 19:49, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I quickly applied that block to stop the edit warring. I'll look into it.  —Smalljim  19:50, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ichthyotitan

[edit]

Ichthyotitan seems to be a target of constant vandalization. Can you consider putting temp protection on it? Perfecnot (talk) 22:23, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not at present. It's best if we keep the vandal's attention to just one article.  —Smalljim  22:27, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My talk page

[edit]

Please do not revert messages on my page. If I decide that the deserve to be removed, I will do so. It was probably good faith, but I will maintain my own space. Thanks, Kingsmasher678 (talk) 22:51, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kingsmasher678: I note your request. Two points though - first, that IP's comment is very close to being RevDel'ed and I suspect that some other admins would have removed it from public view entirely. And second, you'll end up sending a lot of those "do not revert" messages to fellow editors if you keep up with the AV patrolling - which I really hope you do. Thanks for the good work.  —Smalljim  00:05, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, I’ll add a disclaimer at the top of the page. It’s just a personal tick more than anything.
Kingsmasher678 (talk)| Kingsmasher678 (talk) 09:20, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Don’t know why it double signed lol Kingsmasher678 (talk) 09:20, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And of course, if anything is in violation of wiki policy, I fully support it coming down, the rules keep this place what it is and help it grow. Kingsmasher678 (talk) 09:35, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Block change?

[edit]

Good morning/afternoon/evening! (Choose the greeting that best suits your time zone)

Would you mind if I changed the block settings for this delightful anon from a short-ish block to a much longer partial block aimed at Hema Malini? If you look at the edit history of her article, this user comes back from a different IP in that /64 range over and over, with the same horrifying edits. (I don't know if you ran any of that through a translator, but it is absolutely vile. I've completed a rev/del on the latest set). I'm curious to see if that would encourage the IP to just go away. Joyous! Noise! 15:48, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Joyous!: I must admit that I didn't check the text, and although I can't see any previous edits from 2409:40E2:2F:1538:0:0:0:0/64 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), do feel free to amend the block if it would help you - I'm all for "experimenting" on vandals' work!  —Smalljim  18:07, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'll give it a try. I also admit I didn't really look at the translation the first time I saw it, but when it kept coming back, I thought "Wow, this person is really enthusiastic. I wonder what silliness they're adding? [then...] Oh. Oh dear." Anyway, if you notice that my BOLD STRATEGY isn't working, feel free to amend the block any way that suits you. Joyous! Noise! 18:14, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thinking about this, I have seen a few more examples over the past weeks - it's usually the same bad text repeated over and over, in Hindi or Odia. EF346 usually logs them. Zomato has been another target and may be worth adding to any partial blocks. The range from which all this comes is much wider than /64, though. I see that Kuru blocked 2409:40e2::/40 a few hours ago.  —Smalljim  19:03, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. You're right about the range being bigger than the /64 I was thinking of. I'm quite delighted to partial block any of them. I did see that there are a LOT of Hema Malini-related articles. I hope they don't just shift to those. I'll add Zomato to my watchlist, too. Joyous! Noise! 19:14, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
EF346? I don't know what that means. Joyous! Noise! 19:15, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry - it's this secret weapon.  —Smalljim  19:49, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ahhhhh, it all becomes clear now. Thanks! Joyous! Noise! 19:52, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent block

[edit]

You may wish to revoke TPA for this fine fellow. Thanks NW1223<Howl at meMy hunts> 22:49, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The editor has also vowed to perform sockpuppetry (facepalm and sigh). NoobThreePointOh (talk) 22:54, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@NightWolf1223 and NoobThreePointOh: Well, no, the point was that while the vandal's attention was held there, they were not doing anything worse anywhere else! Feel free to remove the comments if you think they've moved on.  —Smalljim  23:06, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've at least removed the comments for now. I'll let you know if they return NW1223<Howl at meMy hunts> 23:11, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It turns out that I have a good username for AV work because it often slows them down thinking of terrible insults to hurl at me.  —Smalljim  23:22, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Francois Letexier page

[edit]

Can you added protected code on François Letexier page again? I think vandalism haven't been stopped since it was removed. I am sure it need more time to clam things down. Please? 195.158.216.30 (talk) 11:29, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Range block

[edit]

Hi Smalljim. You blocked the IP address 24.46.162.215 a couple of days ago for vandalism. However, it appears that this is a dynamic IP and the person behind the IP has been continuing to edit since your block, continuing their pattern of clogging up page histories with repetitive edits (or making and then undoing an edit)[1][2][3] (these diffs don't show the intervening edits), including on one of my user subpages. The user has also been inserting dozens of articles into nonexistent, intentionally misspelled categories.[4][5] They've made more than 500 such edits in the last week so cleaning up their mess will take time.

I entered the IPs into an IP range calculator and it looks like the range 24.46.160.0/22 will cover all the IPs. This range seems to have been used exclusively by the person behind this IP over the last week (the last collateral edits I could see were in mid-April), so I don't think a week-long block on the range would be cause much collateral damage. Would you please consider expanding your block to include the whole range? Thank you, Aoi (青い) (talk) 17:18, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Good call, Aoi! I now see that the range was previously blocked for 3 months from last November, so I've reinstated that rangeblock, for 6 months. Thanks for your help.  —Smalljim  17:59, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't even think to check the block log on the IP range! Thank you, Smalljim! Aoi (青い) (talk) 20:46, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Thanks for the blocks there. Might be worth a range block, as these addresses seem to have an extensive history of similar vandalism. See: Special:Contributions/2409:4085::/34 Bsoyka (tcg) 13:21, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bsoyka: thanks for pointing out that range for me. I see it has been blocked before. Now blocked for 2 weeks.  —Smalljim  13:38, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Austin Butler

[edit]

Hi Smalljim. Thank you for your blocks/semi-protection on Austin Butler. It looks like this IP user: 144.228.22.150 hasn't been blocked yet. Their contribution has been RevDel-ed and I warned them so it looks like they were part of the vandalism too. RomeshKubajali (talk) 20:12, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@RomeshKubajali: I will if they edit again, but it's likely they have moved on.  —Smalljim  20:34, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for your help. RomeshKubajali (talk) 20:44, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you.

Report Sockpuppetry

[edit]

Good day Smalljim, I just wanna say well done regarding your actions taken on the AFD for Abdul Azim Badakhshi (2nd nomination). I am actually suspecting Parwiz ahmadi to be the master of those Sockpuppetry account who has been going around pleading with editors to save the article for him. All references can be found on his talk page. Gabriel (talk to me ) 14:46, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gabriel601. Thanks for the notice, but it's actually a known and really boring old vandal.  —Smalljim  14:53, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. You welcome. Gabriel (talk to me ) 14:56, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Smalljim, I hope you are well and healthy.
My name is Parviz Ahmadi from Panjshir, Afghanistan. I don't understand what issue this person has with me. He has nominated several of my articles for deletion without any comprehensive reason. Please consider my editing history; all my articles are related to the issues of my country. I have not been involved in any other activities. As you might be aware, working on Wikipedia is voluntary, and no one learns everything from the beginning. Perhaps I made some small mistakes in the past, but that doesn't mean all my work has problems.
I hope you will make an unbiased decision.
Regarding this person @Gabriel601, I must say that he is extremely suspicious. When I visited his talk page, I found that he has been blocked several times for allegedly writing articles for money.
Respectfully, Parwiz ahmadi (talk) 14:15, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Parwiz ahmadi, @Gabriel601: I don't want to get involved in this issue. As I said to Gabriel601, my only interest in that AfD was to revert the edits made by an unrelated vandal who just happened to choose that page to vandalize. I can just offer the standard advice to both of you: follow the policy as set out in WP:Dispute resolution.  —Smalljim  14:45, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

About your block of 179.110.160.27

[edit]

Just so you know, that's likely 204.199.48.94 ducking their one month block.   –Skywatcher68 (talk) 13:33, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) It's been sorted out by User:Jake Wartenberg. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 13:40, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Skywatcher68. I've upped the block length to match the other one, though it's probably not worth it if they're skipping IPs anyway.
@NoobThreePointOh - what has JW sorted out?  —Smalljim  13:48, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Smalljim Oh, ok, nvm. I saw JW blocked, and assumed that he had increased after you. My bad and apologies. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 13:56, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem - though you did make me wonder if my browser wasn't updating properly for a minute there!  —Smalljim  14:29, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Naw, that's definitely me. I'm not getting great connection on my phone because I'm in an extremely rural area of Karnataka on vacation. Not sure if there's any proper cell phone tower here. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 14:34, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Myrealnamm, no comment to make there, but I've blocked a few ranges (IPv4s too) which might slow them down a bit; and if they come back, we can repeat the process.  —Smalljim  22:56, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disruption continuing despite range block

[edit]

Hello Smalljim, I've noticed today that an unregistered user did a series of useless edits that are similar to the contributions from an IP range you blocked. Apparently, your user talk page is being targeted as well. Another range block? ObserveOwl (chit-chatmy doings) 08:51, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe a LTA filing as well, but I don't know how that works. ObserveOwl (chit-chatmy doings) 09:18, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ObserveOwl. I and others have been adding range blocks, and there are other things we can do. But this is pretty trivial disruption and WP:DENY is good advice.  —Smalljim  13:19, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You are on fire today! You've beaten me at least 12 times to blocking an LTA sock account and I've lost count as to how many times you beat me to reverting damage caused by them today. I'm usually the one that's on the prowl, identifies and shakes the place clean fast... IP Address you blocked no longer assigned to its old owner

[edit]

81.178.75.46 is no longer the IP used by Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School, its 77.108.173.36. They switched ISPs over the weekend and were assigned this new IP, so I'd keep an eye on it and remove the old block.

I wouldn't be surprised if vandalism continues from the school, but from 77.108.173.36 now.

How I know this is I am a student at said school, editing from home, hence why I'm putting this here anonymously. If you need proof before blocking I can make an edit from that IP to this talk page. I'll try to remember to keep an eye on this talk page.

Thank you! 2A02:C7C:E2BB:8C00:F9D4:AC62:D240:62EC (talk) 19:35, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
