Dear Simeon, i don't understand what you did here and why. It says: "Adding local short description: "German artist", overriding Wikidata description "Lightartist, Painter" - but i don't see this description anywhere? Please, can you help me to understand? --Gyanda (talk) 20:36, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

Hello! Wikipedia articles are linked to a Wikidata item / page: in this case, this article is linked to this Wikidata item: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24706882. Wikidata is a database which contains items and Wikipedia articles are linked to an item / page over there. As you can see there, it contains various basic facts about that item (such as "this Wikidata item is: human, female, with given name Regine, etc). There is also a label and a description of that item in each language. In this case, the English description (as stored in Wikidata at the moment) is "Lightartist, Painter" (but that can also be changed over there if desired). Wikipedia articles can also be given a short description and that's what I did: I added a short description for this article that'll be displayed when people browse Wikipedia on their mobile. As a result of what I did, this is now the description that'll be displayed instead of the one from Wikidata (which is the default behaviour at the moment). There is a tool which helps me do this - it's called Shortdesc helper and it can be enabled by going to Preferences > Gadgets and then there is an option to enable it in the "Editing" section. This allows you to see what description Wikidata has and you can easily import it from Wikidata into the Wikipedia article or set a different short descriptions. Adding a short description to the Wikipedia article itself can be better as it means vandalism can be detected more easily (as it's fairly easy to change the Wikidata description to be changed without it being noticed soon). Let me know if you have any questions :) - Simeon (talk) 20:50, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
wow, this is very informative! I did start wikidata objects, when i write an article, but i never knew about this possibilities! Thank you so much that you took the time to explain it. --Gyanda (talk) 01:02, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Really sorry for the revert, I was in the recent changes page when I accidentally hit the mouse. JurassicClassic767 (talk | contribs) 18:40, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Please stop

You are not actually making changes and just flooding watchlists. You do not need to change "American actor" to "American actor" because they are the same thing. In other words, please make sure what you're changing is actually, well, changed. Primefac (talk) 15:16, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

@Primefac:, Hmm, let me clarify: if you're referring to a change such as this one, it means a short description that was added by a bot has now been checked by a human so that's what my change adds (as the bot isn't perfect and has made mistakes in the past). This also reduces the number of articles in Category:Articles with short description added by PearBOT 5 which still need to be checked. If you're referring to a change such as this one, it means the description has been imported from Wikidata into Wikipedia and Wikidata short descriptions are no longer used on mobile, so there wouldn't be a short description in that case, see https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Short_description#History. I can reduce the number of short descriptions I modify on any given day if that helps. - Simeon (talk) 15:32, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Fair enough about checking the bot. However, if that is the case the edit summary should reflect that - I shouldn't see an edit summary like your first link and then see the shortdesc not actually being changed. I know this is probably something that needs changing in the script, but that is really more of my issue; I'd rather see "verifying bot-added shortdesc" or something similar than a deceptive edit summary.
Additionally, and I might bring this up somewhere, but I almost feel like with 43k pages in the "check PearBOT" category, after a certain point we just... accept that it was correct, and fix what was wrong when we find it in the small number of cases where it wasn't? Seems rather unnecessary to have a bot make tens of thousands of edits just for someone else to come along and make another set of tens of thousands of edits essentially doing the same job. Primefac (talk) 15:39, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
As the bot creator, I definitely agree with Primefac here. The intention of the category was to make it easy for me to identify which articles had a description by my bot so I could easily fix issues that occurred on multiple pages. It wasn't meant as a backlog category, there are much better uses of editor time than this one. In hindsight it was probably a bad idea to implement it like I did and I'm considering deleting the category. I can find them in other ways. --Trialpears (talk) 09:03, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
PS if you enjoyed double checking bot work I would recommend Category:Bot-created FJC subpages needing merge action. It's an ancient but manageable sized category of bot generated biographies that at times contain information or entire sections that can be added to articles. Did some of this in 2019. --Trialpears (talk) 09:07, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Athlete result tables

Hi there! Thanks for your contributions on track and field athletes. FYI the prose you've added for Katie Snowden is better represented in an AchievementTable like that found on articles such as Amaia Andrés. Normally it is better just to summarise medals and number of appearances at major competitions in the lead prose, rather than giving details such as the location of the event etc. Hope this helps! SFB 00:26, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, that's a good point. I have added the table and have expanded the bio and intro a bit. Hopefully the career section will grow a bit more so that it becomes more interesting to read than indeed only a summary of years, events and locations. - Simeon (talk) 01:00, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Hey Simeon, how is it going? First of all I'd like to thank you for your constant improvement in sport wrestlers and Olympic athletes in general. I'm communicating with u to ask for help on the article above. We had a conflict with another user (see this) and basically we have now transferred all of the info from his article to the one above. Problem is, I'm not really sure what should go in there and what shouldn't. I already deleted a section which showed the ruleset and explained weight classes, which was unnecessary, but there's a lot of questionable info, like the whole qualification thing, like, I don't think that's relevant info but I don't know. Hopefully you can guide me/us in this process, as the event is officially taking place between tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Thanks. PabloLikesToWrestle (talk) 19:27, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

@PabloLikesToWrestle: Hi there, it's going well here :) I think the information that was in your version when moving the Draft article to mainspace contains sections that are certainly needed: an overview of the medalists and the brackets so we can see how the medalists won their medals. Looking at the article now, it also contains a lot of information regarding qualification but perhaps it makes sense to have this information to provide context for the reader. If a reader isn't familiar with wrestling / Olympic qualification, I'd want to know why and how the U.S. chooses to select its wrestlers to compete in the Olympics. Looking at other countries, many wrestlers qualify by reaching a particular result in a qualification tournament but U.S. wrestlers also need to perform well at this event. I think we can remove unnecessary details but I think it should still become clear for anyone what path a wrestler took to represent the United States at the Olympics. If the qualification information is removed (entirely), then anyone would have to manually search how a particular wrestler arrived at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. So when editing the article I'd keep things like this in mind :) But we can still think about this further as the event happens and afterwards as well, in addition to updating the article with the event's results. - Simeon (talk) 19:53, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Assia Raziki

This was a pretty incomplete article. Stubs are one thing, but why are the Arab Championships and African Games singled out, and the African Championships, Jeux Francophonoe and Islamic Solidarity Games omitted? Geschichte (talk) 18:53, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

A somewhat pessimistic view is that, apparently, only two people have developed a sufficient interest to edit or expand this article. At least having an article lowers the barrier for other editors to contribute but even then it's likely for a biography to have gaps for a long time. I think that competing at an event is important but not so important that a first version of an article necessarily needs to have that information. As such, I usually look at "medals won" and start there. - Simeon (talk) 19:24, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Regarding Articles

Hi Simeon, As you have worked on the articles of France Karate people, I am doing the same please check this article Draft:Raybak_Abdesselem The medal template is I think messed up so please would you fix it?

--Static Hash (talk) 08:32, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, I changed a few things to make the medals in the table and the infobox look better - they can still be changed of course if I misunderstood what medals he won. The only thing is that I'm not sure whether this person is notable enough to have an article as he has yet to win a senior-level medal. However, there may be reasons for notability that I'm not currently aware of :) - Simeon (talk) 09:06, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi thank you so much, he won 1 gold medal and 2 silver and was a runner-up in few games, as a senior he was in Tokyo 2020 Olympics but not won any medal for that.--Static Hash (talk) 09:58, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Help

Can you help me if you interested to create a page about turkish Journalist ? Gazeteci Sabah 1453 (talk) 15:24, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, I think I'm not the best person to ask as I'm not familiar with Turkish journalism, or, in general, what is required for someone to have a biographical article on Wikipedia as a journalist. However, you could go to Wikipedia:Requested articles and request the article there. Alternatively, it may be possible to search around and find a different Wikipedia editor who has written articles about journalists; they would be better positioned to help, or, at least, evaluate whether someone is considered notable for an article. - Simeon (talk) 15:28, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

title s yes or no?

Hi , please see: https://uww.org/event/world-championships-54?tab=results

August 16 - 22, 2021 Juniors • FS, GR, WW World Championships

also in database results: https://uww.org/athletes-results

Cadets , Juniors , Seniors

As far as I have examined, the World Federation does not insist on one of these two names. Use S in several places and not in some places. And I think we have to agree on which name is more conceptually correct. I think juniors are more correct than junior because competitions are not held for one person and there are several hundred participants. Regards and thanks IoATi (talk) 11:57, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

hi my dear friend , can you help? and create this : Nigorakhon Mirzokhidova

https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/paralympic-games/en/results/swimming/athlete-profile-n1705790-mirzokhidova-nigorakhon.htm

i am work about UZb at para. thanks.

As far as I can tell, she won a bronze medal in the women's 100 metre backstroke at the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships but she hasn't won a medal at the 2020 Summer Paralympics yet, so at this stage I'm not sure that's 'enough' to be considered notable. If she wins a medal at the 2020 Summer Paralympics then she would be considered notable for an article, as per WP:NOLYMPICS guidelines. So we might need to wait a few days to see whether she wins a medal. - Simeon (talk) 12:29, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Help about Countries at Paralympics

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Egypt_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Egypt_at_the_2020_Summer_Paralympics

Hi Dear Simeon, we have problem in infobox in para.

Summer Olympics appearances (overview)

Summer Paralympics appearances

We havent Overview link in para but we have in olympic.

not only in egypt artcle , but in almost all of countries.

for example:

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Mexico_at_the_2020_Summer_Paralympics

i am see in one article this problem was solved in Tunisia:

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Tunisia_at_the_2020_Summer_Paralympics

I think we should fix one of the patterns but I could not find the pattern and solve the problem. Please solve this problem. I think we need to modify the root pattern so that the Overview link is shown to all countries in each Paralympic period as the Olympics.

I think this happens because the infobox template shows that link when the page "<country> at the Summer Paralympics" exists but many of those pages don't exist yet. For example, I created this redirect from "Egypt at the Summer Paralympics" to "Egypt at the Paralympics" (as that page does exist), and the "overview" link did appear on Egypt at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. So I think it's just a matter of creating the pages that are necessary for the overview link to show up. - Simeon (talk) 10:03, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hamza Bouazzaoui

Hi, I opened a deletion query, I want to know what other users think about deleting my article Nasty bits (talk) 16:44, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello,
I've seen your removal of flags from judoka infoboxes per MOS:INFOBOXFLAG, but I think that the policy support their use:

"flags are discouraged in sportspeople's individual infoboxes ... However, the infobox may contain the national flag icon of an athlete who competes in competitions where national flags are commonly used as representations of sporting nationality in a given sport."

As you can see in all judo databases such as IJF.org & JudoInside.com, a judoka is always written with their country letter and\or flag. Therefor, the flag may appear on their Wikipedia infobox. Deancarmeli (talk) 06:35, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, that's true but I mainly removed them because it also says: "Flag icons should only be inserted in infoboxes in those cases where they convey information in addition to the text.". For example, on a page like this one (not judo, but as an example), the reader can see the flag icon in three places even though I (personally) would say that it only has value in the "Medal record" section (to emphasize that the medals were won for a particular country). For both the "nationality" and "country" fields, it should be enough to simply write words without icons (i.e., "less is more"). As far as flag icons are concerned, I think an article such as this one is what I would go for as long-term it seems better to avoid overuse of icons but I'm aware there are different opinions on this. In any case, the Template:Infobox judoka documentation at the moment says flag icons should not be used in the "country" field so I think we'd need to think about it and update that if necessary. Simeon (talk) 08:12, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
I think that the quote you've provided is for the general case, and mine is for the specific one, but agree with you that usage of icons in the Radik Valiev article is excessive. Despite favoring the usage of icons in the "country" field, especially when having athletes with collapsed medal tables, I have to yield this point, having created the Template:Infobox judoka documentation myself.

On a different note, My invetation for you to join me in creating a WikiProject Judo still stands. Deancarmeli (talk) 10:08, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

Short desc and William Hey (surgeon)

Please note WP:SDDATES which says that dates should normally be included in short description, so I've replaced tem in William Hey (surgeon). PamD 08:24, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. I can't remember where I read it but I seem to have picked up the idea that birth/death dates are mostly included when there are multiple people with the same name and that there is less of a need to include them otherwise. But I can see that WP:SDDATES encourages their use (when space allows), so it makes sense to start including them. Simeon (talk) 09:12, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Short description project?

Hi. Taking a close look after much-reduced activity since 2015 or so, I see that you are all over my Watchlist report with importation and revision of Wikidata descriptions for use here. Quick question: Are you working on this as a part of a project with, probably, some maintenance category or three; and, perhaps, such guidelines as use of "writer" vs "author", priority for "fantasy writer" and "children's writer". (I did read about use of dates.)

I recall a Category intersection tool, and I have in mind that it can be used with a maintenance category and something like Category:British writers --more likely one or two of that one's subcategories. From your pace I guess you do something like that.

(I have written many descriptions that are now at Wikidata, either there or in the {Persondata} field that was imported there 7-10 years ago. Mainly for English-language writers and illustrators of published books.) --P64 (talk) 20:06, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm mainly reusing the first sentence of an article, but without making it too specific. Usually that means "writer" or "author" or "children's writer" but frequently I remove the genre, so "fantasy" is usually removed. If there is already a useful existing description at Wikidata then it's just a matter of importing it (they need to be imported as Wikidata descriptions no longer show up on mobile, see Wikipedia:Short_description#History). I'm not working as part of a team project but I use PetScan (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/) to find articles without a short description (i.e., that tool can be used to find all articles in a particular category without the template Short description). I'm not aware of any guidelines specifically for writers but it's usually sufficient to have "<nationality> writer" or "<nationality> author" with birth year / death year. I'm mainly adding short descriptions to articles that lack one currently; in the future it may be useful to do another round and to tweak each short description for any improvements / adjustments. Simeon (talk) 20:32, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. Your target Wikipedia:Short_description#History is immensely useful and I hope to find during my hoped-for remaining decades that some others in Wikipedia: space have worked to provide such summaries.
Your reference PetScan (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/) may be useful. I found the official WikiProject and its short recommendation WP:WPSD#Other useful scripts. Not sure whether I'll do much such work, but it's useful to know of the tools. (I have contributed little 0-7 years ago; lots 7-14 years ago; unfortunately it's even useful to be reminded of such things as "WP:WP"!)
I have set up and used the gadget once, for practice. I found the lead to "need" a short but substantial revision also, which hints to myself that I might not ever much use clever tools to do such work as yours at pace. --P64 (talk) 21:42, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

Adding category "20th-century Dutch people"

Hi Simeon. I noticed that you have been adding the category 20th-century Dutch people to quite some articles of politicians who were elected in the 2021 Dutch general election. Can you please clarify why you have added this category? WP:COPCENTURY provides some examples pointing out that such categories should only be added if the person is known for activities in that period. To give a few examples, you added the category to Daan de Kort (born 1992), who did not rise through the political ranks until after he was eight years old, when the 21st-century began. But also older people such as Liane den Haan did not rise to prominence before she became managing director of COC Nederland in 2001. Do you still think they should be categorized at 20th-century people? - Tristan Surtel (talk) 07:48, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, I added this category to ensure that an entire person's life (both centuries, depending on birth date), is covered by a century category. For people that were elected in the 21st century, it'd be and , so that an article can be found in both century category trees. I agree that if someone was elected as politician in the 21st century, there's no need to have both and .
So I've been categorizing according to the first example in WP:COPCENTURY (i.e., a person born in 1992 shouldn't be categorized as a as, indeed, they were not a politician at that time). However, I was not aware of the specifics of WP:COPCENTURY when making these changes and the second example in that guideline does suggest that shouldn't be added.
Wikipedia:Defining mentions nationality as a defining characteristic (hence a person could have such characteristic in each century?) but that may be pedantic and I'm happy to remove these categories and stick to the "century + nationality + profession" categories if that is the intended way of categorizing. Would you say that is indeed the action to take here? Simeon (talk) 09:12, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi. My best reading of the second example is also that categorization is only necessary if the person has done anything of note in that time period. Looking at my watchlist (collapsible below), I think all of these people except Hans Smolders do not meet that bar. I'd appreciate it if the categories would be removed again and thank you for looking into the issue. - Tristan Surtel (talk) 10:34, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
That's fair, I have now removed the categories except for Hans Smolders. Apologies for the large number of watchlist changes and thanks for clarifying this categorization approach / guideline. Simeon (talk) 11:00, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Cyclist Per Christian Münstermann

Dear Simeon, I would please you to create a English Wikipedia Page for Cyclist: Per Christian Münstermann He‘s professional cyclist and is currently racing for Saris Rouvy Sauerland Team. 4x times German Champion . He already got a German Wikipedia page but I’m missing one in English. I would please to create a English version of: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per_Christian_Münstermann Thanks you very much! 94.121.168.9 (talk) 00:23, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I don't know enough about cycling to be able to tell whether he qualifies for an article according to the notability guidelines of the English-language Wikipedia (there's the general notability guidelines, WP:GNG, and, specifically, there is WP:NCYCLING for cyclists). If I understand correctly, "Mannschaftszeitfahren" translates to team time trial which could perhaps be less of a contribution to notability than an individual achievement, such as German national champion in the German National Road Race Championships or German National Time Trial Championships.
At the moment, I think an article about him could be successfully nominated for deletion but I'm not sure as I can't tell whether he's notable for possibly other reasons. What if you ask on the talk page of the WikiProject Cycling (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cycling) for help, as we'd first need to determine whether he qualifies for an article (someone who regularly writes about cyclists should be able to tell)? - Simeon (talk) 13:52, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the Informations. In fact he is already in Wikipedia France, Espanol and Germany + there is already made a Draft in English it seems for me he is qualified. Cant you publish following draft:

That's true, but articles in other Wikipedia projects won't determine the notability for the English-language Wikipedia. As far as I can tell, he hasn't met the criteria set out in WP:NCYCLING with only one senior-level team time trial medal, and no individual achievements. He could be notable for an article in this Wikipedia project but I'm not the best person to determine that or to publish that draft. Perhaps the author of that draft could publish it or submit to the Wikipedia:Articles for creation project for publishing? Simeon (talk) 15:21, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
