Norman C. Deno
Hey Silver! I just started an article for Norman C. Deno. He is one of the most important researchers of seed germination ever, but he has very little recognition. Feel free to do some digging! He's definitely an excellent DYK candidate!! Best, Thriley (talk) 03:34, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Thriley: I think Professor Deno is good to go. I'm planning on heading over to DYK to submit it. Anything you want to add? And any ideas for a good DYK hook? SilverserenC 22:59, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Silver seren: I'm not sure. I have never written one! DYK "Penn State professor Norman C. Deno was one of the foremost researchers in seed germination theory, performing germination research on 150 families, 800 genera, and 2500 species over the course of his career"? Or perhaps something about his research into the chemical basis for germination? Thriley (talk) 00:30, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Silver seren: Did you find any mention of where he was educated? Thriley (talk) 00:31, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, no. Biographical details were sparse. I'd bet you it's in the biographical entry I put in the further reading though. There's likely a good bit of personal detail in that, but I don't have access to it. SilverserenC 00:32, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- I'll email some university library reference departments. I'm sure they can send me the info. Thriley (talk) 00:38, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Here's the full info on Deno that was in the entry: Born: February 15, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois, United States Nationality: American Occupation: Scientist

David Vetter
Hey Silver! Superb work on the Norman C. Deno article! I made a mistake only a few minutes ago by accidentally making a main space article for David Vetter (farmer). I meant to have a draft going as I gathered and dug for information about him. I think it is similar to Deno as Vetter's career really got going in the pre-internet age, so many publications might not be immediately accessible through a quick internet search. When you get a chance, can you check out the article to see if you think it will stay up based upon the sourcing it has now? I think it has DYK potential, especially since a documentary was made about him. Best, Thriley (talk) 00:10, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Thriley: It looks like you've got plenty of sourcing already going on there. You can also draftify it if you feel you need more time. I think I might sit this one out. Vetter is...not a topic I would be able to focus on, since he's kind of a rather strong negative figure for me. I live in Nebraska and work on plant mitochondrial genetics using biotechnology. Vetter is one of the better known anti-science names here who has historically been complicit in harming biological science in general in the region. SilverserenC 00:28, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Thriley: No problem! He does have that “GMO = bad” vibe. Thriley (talk) 00:32, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Silver seren: Have you seen any critiques of Vetter that are notable enough to be included in the article? I think it is important for Vetter and others like him in the organic movement to be documented warts and all. Thriley (talk) 02:31, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Thriley: Not too much coverage, unfortunately. There is an episode of The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe that seems to cover him, among other topics. I haven't listened to it myself, so I don't know how extensive it goes into the topic. But it and Steven Novella are a reliable expert source. SilverserenC 02:44, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Silver seren: Thank you. I'll have a listen. Thriley (talk) 03:16, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hopefully that's on the same Vetter and not the bubble boy kid. Him having the same name makes searching for sources difficult. SilverserenC 03:20, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, it is indeed about bubble boy David Vetter. He really does interfere with the search for sources. Hopefully farmer Vetter will get a long write up in the near future that can serve as a backbone to the article. So far, I have not really found that. Thriley (talk) 03:31, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

J. Russell Smith
Hi Silver, I just started an article for J. Russell Smith. He's a fascinating interdisciplinary figure. I came across his Tree Crops when I was young and it left a lasting influence. I think his life story has many different aspects that would make good DYKs. I'm going to try to get a book about his work from a library at some point over the next few weeks. There's probably enough material in that for a very extensive article. All the best, Thriley (talk) 20:44, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
Some drafts I started
Hi Silver! Another salute to your incredibly good research and editing! I cannot say enough how honored I am to work with you.
I started a few drafts recently that you might be interested in. They all seem like articles that would make compelling DYK's: Draft:Edmund G. Love, Draft:Heath Freeman (businessman), Draft:Michael DeVine (innkeeper), and Draft:Avocado production in the United States. There are plenty more but I don't want to feel like I'm throwing them at you. Best, Thriley (talk) 22:25, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
One-arm (restaurant)
Edmund Love used the term "One-arm" to describe the kind of restaurant he would not bother trying. I had never heard the term used before. It seems they were very common at the turn of the 20th century. Feel free to do a deep dive: Draft:One-arm (restaurant). Best, Thriley (talk) 22:40, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Everydays: the First 5000 Days
I quickly made an article for Everydays: the First 5000 Days when I noticed it didn't have an article yet. It certainly would be a good DYK and will probably have a considerable amount of views per day over the next year or more. Best, Thriley (talk) 20:18, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
- I think i'm going to skip on this one, @Thriley:, since I have some other things IRL to work on and I already spent my time today on Looking Horse. So this article is up to you to expand it! SilverserenC 03:35, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Pelham Horton Box
Hi Silver, I was wondering if you could do a quick check for sources for Pelham Horton Box. I can't seem to find much. He's not really a great candidate for DYK with the lack of info. It would be wonderful to have his obit. Hope your semester is wrapping up well! Best, Thriley (talk) 21:01, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Thriley: I think that's the best I can do. No obit, unfortunately. I feel like there's probably more sources out there on him in non-English material. SilverserenC 21:48, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Mule
Hi Silver, I started a draft for the American nomad Mule. He's a great DYK candidate. He's older, so I'm not sure how much longer he will be wandering. Best, Thriley (talk) 01:56, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Some drafts
Hi Silver, here are some drafts that you may be interested in:O. A. Stevens, Harriet Pattison, J. C. Raulston, Rosalind Creasy. I need to reread the sourcing for Harriet Pattison as I think I mixed up the timeline.
Thanks for your help with the Xinjiang Victims Database! That should develop into an extensive article over the next few months, especially as there will likely be further profiles on it in major publications. Hope all is well. Best, Thriley (talk) 18:24, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
- I was just reminded that John W. Hershey doesn't have a page while reading about cold hardy nut trees. An excellent subject with considerable influence. Thriley (talk) 20:37, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
