Help Request from liam mcb19
Hi Shalor! It looks like you've been assigned to help out my class this semester and I have one item I'd like to clarify. When writing sections on plot summaries and major characters for an article on a book, do I need to have references? And, can I simply reference a page number from the book the article is about to support specific factual (not interpretative) details? Thank you so much! --Liam mcb19 (talk) 02:23, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Jonahx11!
Hi. A student from Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Bowling Green State University/Sexuality and Politics (Spring 2019) just added this to Transgender people in sports. Another editor rightfully reverted it, although were probably a bit harsh in the edit summary. Any way I though I would give you heads up as you are listed as the content expert and there is obviously issues with the content. Also they may need some reassurance after it was reverted. Thanks AIRcorn (talk) 03:45, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

User:shek celestine about our eugenic feminism page
Hello! this is Celestine Shek, and me and my partner wrote an article about eugenic feminism. We put our article on a an existing eugenic feminism page, and some of our paragraphs were deleted by an editor a few times. We want to create a new page, a timeline of eugenic feminism. We were wondering if we should tell the editor about our plans of making a new timeline. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shekcelestine (talk • contribs) 02:38, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello. The article I am editing is postmodern feminism. I am responsible for adding detailed information to the lead section. I have not posted to the Talk Page yet because I need help with organizing my section. I am having trouble with prioritizing what information should come first and/or what information I should include in the section. The other group members helping with editing are Dayla Durandisse and Sophie Ballak. I would greatly appreciate any advice you have for me.
Sincerely, Asiah

Hi Shalor! Our teacher expressed a desire for us to include a picture of a book cover on our article about a novel. Of course, the book is copyrighted. Would you outline how we might be able to get permission or justification to add such a picture to our article, or direct me to a resource about it? I looked through my course's training modules but didn't see anything dealing with how to get permission to upload a copyrighted image. Thank you! --Liam mcb19 (talk) 18:04, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Need help
Hello.
I need help with, making my own character page for a video game called rainbow six siege. Its for a class assignment. I want to create a page for my mains ( Who i use the most.) They are both Navy seals. (fictional characters) One is named Valkery (Valk) and another is BlackBeard. I want to talk about their abilities, and bio's. What the game has given me and the Rainbow six siege community. I follow the creators very well (Ubisoft) and their updates. I have been playing the game for about 4 years in December it will be five. With these two operators together I have around 6,000 kills. But that is not relevant i want to talk about the operators and what they have done. In the game they have a bio section and its a small background of what the creators gave us, but there is a lot of common conspiracy's after what the creators have given us and what we think happens after that, during, and what they are doing now. None have be retired yet, but out of the whole 45 operators there are some old ones, Valk and BlackBeard are in their early and mid thirties. I also want to talk about what we think these two will do after words and what the community thinks. Both of these characters are loved and hated by the community. The developers hate Blackbeard because every season he gets a Nerf ( fixed to make the game better and him weaker) Or a buff ( fixed to make the game better and him stronger) For the past 2 years and 8-10 season he has been changed so much its hard to enjoy playing with him anymore. One season his shield goes from 10 bullets to 2 bullets to break and he gets slower or faster. The shield gets heavier or lighter and sometimes he gets slower because the shield is so heavy but it is weaker, sometimes people can find soft spots in his shield to where it will break after a single shot, and it takes him forever to replace it with his second shield and hes to slow to find cover or get to it.

Professor question
I am teaching using Wikipedia for the first time and up until now this has been a good experience. A Wikipedia editor MPS1992 has come out this evening and attacked me and my students. On my talk page, he accused me of not being a professional and accused my students of randomly wrecking Wikipedia. They have worked with me for months coming up with the edits that they want to make and their projects are due tomorrow. I know that I will still be able to see their edits if someone deletes all of them, but I am concerned that this user is reacting quite harshly to them and to me.
One student that he seems particularly concerned about is a young woman that I have who is working on Tupac Amaru II. She is a Spanish major and went to great lengths to find a Spanish source (the only one that she could locate) that she duly translated and then put the information completely in her own words. There does not seem to be any warnings about translated material in the WikiEducation pages. I am having trouble seeing how it is different from high-quality English sources that one would use for facts that one is putting into their own words. Could you please explain this to me? Sheddedl (talk) 00:40, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
I now have had a second person start attacking me (maybe the same one but with a different name) on Helaine's talk page. I am having lots of trouble here understanding what is going wrong. I am probably doing a lot wrong, but I am surprised by the viciousness of it all. I am trying really hard to do the right thing by Wikipedia and my students. Any help that you can offer would be really greatly appreciated Sheddedl (talk) 18:41, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Need help request from Murgamayra (talk)
Hi Shalor
Hope you are well today, as you know I've been assigned to do edit a wikipedia page for a class. To be quite honest I'm not tech savvy and I very confused on what's expected of me. I have chosen to edit the page "callao" since is my city of birth. I have found a lot more information about this through Callaos's municipality website. I guess my question is do I type any contributions in my sandbox along with the citation and wait to add it to the page? Do I edit directly on the page? It worries me that I might type something wrong or cite something incorrectly and get backlash or in trouble for it. I know this might be silly but I'm honestly freaking out. Thanks in advance for your help. I'm attaching the website I plan on using for information for you to review.

Wikipedia Assignment Help: A Wrinkle in Time (2003 Film)
Hi! My name is Caroline and I am currently working on improving the Wikipedia page for the 2003 film A Wrinkle in Time for my writing class. The page is missing key information and has many content gaps. I began to add my edits to the page, and immediately after, they were deleted by another editor. He stated that he thought my edits were not constructive. One example of my edits was that the page had no production section, which Wikipedia recommends to include for a page about a film, so I created this section and added a couple of sentences regarding the production of the film (cited of course). Do you have any recommendations for how I should re-approach my editing? I added some of my edits in larger bunches, so would it be smarter to do it sentence by sentence?
Thank you, Caroline — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cas461 (talk • contribs) 16:01, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Just checking in on something
- Japanese South Africans (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Japanese people in South Africa (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
I was browsing the list of uncategorized articles and found this student article. While I was adding the categories, I noticed we already had an article on the same subject. I therefore merged the two. The student's article was much better in pretty much every way in terms of prose, but the existing article had longer history. I posted on their talk page and the redirect's talk page to inform of this change. All the changes were noted at the latter talk page, and I was very apologetic because I didn't realize that interacting with Wikipedians was a standard part of the course.
Ignoring the fact that this article could use a WP:HISTMERGE, the merge did create the problem that some of the information (not from the student's version) is out of date and lacks proper inline citations. Which would be preferred: (1) I clean up that stuff myself or (2) you ask the student to do it for me? It's mostly just the education section and the government statistics in the infobox anyways.
I'll also out myself right now and ask: Who do I contact from Wiki Education to get this at my school? I'm like a twenty-year-old super-involved college student activist, and I know all my professors really well. I also sit on the Student Advisory Committee to the Board of Regents for my school. If there is anyway I can make it happen in this state, please let me know! –MJL ‐Talk‐☖ 02:20, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello,
My last assignment for my course was to make my sandbox live and make it with the article I have been working on all semester. Since then, I have been getting messages such as "if you keep disrupting Music Therapy's talk page I will block you," or "Wikipedia is not your private playground. You can't break Wikipedia's policies to achieve your goals." I don't know what to do about these messages and after trying to talk with them, they referred me to the Wiki help. My instructor wants me to make my work live, but I'm scared people will keep moving it or deleting my work.
Thanks,
- There is a category for music therapy. I would focus on a specific type of music therapy rather than general content about music therapy.
- Sources are available here. For reviews click here. To format the source put in the doi here. The pmi must be added manually. QuackGuru (talk) 16:44, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you QuackGuru! I think that they're mostly doing smaller edits to the article, such as fixing or adding sourcing as well as checking for typos and such. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:11, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
- A suggestion could be adding content about live music therapy. QuackGuru (talk) 22:38, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

Someone removed and pasted my work to the new page. (05/08/2019)
Hello! I currently worked on the 'Hearing Loss' page and I decided to add a new section,'Education' to the page. I have completed uploading my works and edits. I just found out that someone just copied and pasted my works to the new page, "Management of the Hearing loss" and omitted my works from 'Hearing Loss' page. Should I re-upload up my original work to the 'Hearing Loss' and omit the part on 'Management of the Hearing loss"? I have decided to re-upload my original work to the "Hearing Loss" page and kept my part on 'Management of the Hearing Loss" for a while, because of my assignment, which required me to post and finalize my works on the "Hearing Loss'. Please let me know if there is something I might need to do first. Thanks!

You are invited to join the discussion at User talk:SheridanFord#Kyra Gaunt. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:03, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Shalor. I think it would be a good idea for you and perhaps some other Wiki Ed advisors to take a look at this matter. Perhaps it's something you've come across before, but basically it appears that a student or some students have created an article about their instructor. There's seems to be an obvious WP:APPARENTCOI here and if the student(s) are being "graded" for their efforts (the creator of the article has stated this is not the case), then it might even be considered a form of "compensated" editing. FWIW, I only came across the article after seeing a message that Magnolia677 posted on another editor's user talk. The subject of the article has been a Wikipedia contributor in good standing for a long time and is aware of the issue; so, I'm not trying to get anyone blocked or banned. You yourself were the person who moved the user sandbox draft to the mainspace, and I'm sure you wouldn't have done that if there were problems with notability, etc. You've also been making other improvements to the article. Now that it's in the mainspace and others are working on it, the students should probably take a step back and refrain from directly editing it and instead propose changes like every other connected contributor would be expected to do in a similar situation. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:24, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know about this! I was a bit worried about what may happen when it was moved live, so I'm not really surprised. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:33, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- Definitely thank you, Marchjuly! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:55, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for taking a look. Perhaps is not as serious an issue as I thought since the subject of the article appears to meet WP:BIO. Still it does seem a little unusual to have a course instructor either directly or indirectly encourage her students to create/edit Wikipedia content about her as part of their course. The students (at least it my mind) would be subject to WP:COI in such a case, meaning others would expect them refrain from directly editing the article. Have you come across this type of situation before? -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:47, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Marchjuly! I think I've had some students try to go forwards with this in the past, but it usually doesn't go far. In these situations I'll try to look for sourcing myself and if I can't find enough, I'll encourage them to find something else while explaining the difficulty for academics to pass notability guidelines. In this case I was able to find enough coverage to where it looked like it would be feasible. Unfortunately I have to say that I've run into students wanting to write on academics in general, only for me to have to let them know that the individual doesn't pass WP:NACADEMIC. There's not much I can do about that, except for hoping that the person(s) in question get more coverage in the future. I'm sure that you're familiar with that frustration, where someone who should get coverage doesn't. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:02, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
Need help retrieving unpublished edits
Hi Shalor,
I am a student at UC Berkeley, taking a class in African Politics. As part of my coursework, I am supposed to improve an existing Wikipedia article. I was directly editing the article, using the visual editor feature. I went to retrieve information from an article I had opened in another tab, and when I returned to the Wikipedia page I was editing (titled "Development aid"), the page was blank. I tried to reload but there was still nothing. I am assuming that the page crashed and when the page finally reloaded, majority of the edits I made were lost.
I did not publish my edits before this happened. Is there a way to retrieve my edits although I did not publish them beforehand?
Kindly assist me with this issue. Thank you.

Terrorism in Burkina Faso Citation Question and Sandbox Question
Hi there! I also posted this question on my own talk page but wasn't sure if I tagged you correctly so that you'd definitely see it.
I am confused over the cites you requested - although I did add all of them in! Several of the cites added make it so that two sentences (or more!) in a row are cited to the same source. Why is it necessary to cite the same source twice in a row? Won't readers just assume that the first cite applies to all subsequent sentences until the next cite? Thank you!
Also, while I'm asking for help -- how do I set up my sandbox to have one introductory page with a paragraph about myself and then links to different sandbox parts with different articles I'm working on? Thank you! JustJanani (talk) 15:56, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

User:VerumRex
Hi again Shalor. This editor's user page lists them as being a student in OLES2129 at the University of Sydney, but I cannot find a link to that course. Anyway, they appear to be working on User:VerumRex/sandbox which seems fine, except for the files the editor has been uploading to Wikipedia and Commons (File:Arthur Morgan.jpg and File:Red-dead-redemption-2-arthur-morgan.jpg). It's not uncommon for editors to make mistakes when it comes to image uploads. My guess is that the student felt that uploading files to Commons would be better and less of a problem since their first attempt at uploading a file to Wikipedia was flagged for various issues. Commons, however, doesn't accept any kind of fair use content and such files typically end deleted rather quickly. Moreover, repeated attempts to upload the same file or similar files often lead to a quick block. So, maybe you can figure out who the Wiki ED adviser for this student is and ask that person to post something about images on the student's user talk page. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:03, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
- This student just uploaded File:Arthur Morgan Official Shot.jpg and tried to license it as a {{Non-free video game screenshot}}. Again, this is an obvious misunderstanding, but there's no way Commons will keep the file. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:13, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Marchjuly - this class isn't with WikiEd since the school is in Australia. We only work with students in the US and Canada. That said, I'll go and leave a note on their talk page about this and point them towards the media module. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:06, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you. I thought Wiki Ed handled all courses like this. Do some schools/teachers just decide one day to create/manage their own unsanctioned Wikipedia course projects? That seems like it would be pretty hard to do without any official support from experienced editors like Wiki Ed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:51, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- Marchjuly - Some do. They typically do have issues when it comes to managing edits and monitoring students. This class though, they're run through Wikipedia Education, through WMF. They handle some of the areas overseas that we don't. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:34, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi again Shalor. I came across another student (Austinameo) who also says they are part of OLES2129 at the University of Sydney. Similar problem to above only this student isn't uploading files, just trying to use an already existing non-free file in a draft. Even if this was an article, the way the file is being used wouldn't be allowed per WP:NFC#cite_note-3. Anyway, this editor has a template on their use page which is linking to outreach:Education/Countries/Australia and looking at the page it shows outreach:Education/Countries/Australia#University of Sydney, which list two persons as contacts. I've already left a message at User talk:Austinameo#Non-free content use, but was wondering if you think it might be a good idea to post something on one or both of the two contacts page as well. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:49, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- Marchjuly - it couldn't hurt. The student may not be checking their talk page, but the contact people should be. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:40, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
- I've left a note on the student's page as well. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:41, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for doing that. However, I don't think this student has been uploading files to Commons, at least not using that account. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:52, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Getting pointers for article editing
Hi! Thanks for your feedback. I realize it's a little unclear because I was mislabeled in the dashboard for the course -- I am a librarian working closely with an english professor on an African American Lit class called Post-Soul. I was leading the Wiki editing assignment for the class, and while I've used Wikipedia with students before, I've never worked with students writing new articles.
Really, what the professor User:Ebony_Tower wanted was to get feedback from outside editors for students on how to improve their articles. He saw the talk page Talk:Caucasia_(novel) and saw that it was a Good Article Nominee and received extensive feedback.
I was just showing him how to include a Good Article Nomination in a talk page though I realized the articles themselves needed a lot of work. What's the best way to get feedback that isn't as time consuming as a Good Article nomination?
Again, appreciate your taking the time Bulbil (talk) 20:05, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

Additional Question Regarding Assignment
Hello Shalor, I must have posted my question from 6.22.19 on the wrong section. Please see my question below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Shalor, I just wanted to follow-up on my question from Monday. I tried to add the citation that you recommended but I wasn't successful. I got an automated message indicating that my change was not going to be published. Anything that you think I can do better next time to ensure that the change actually takes place? In addition, just wanted to check in, I did a peer-review on the article that I assigned to myself this week. Should I be doing a peer-review to other class mates and their assigned articles? I guess I just want to make sure that I am doing what I need to in order to prep me for the final assignment. What does the final assignment/deliverable look like? Are there any examples that you can point me to? Thanks in advance. GonzagaFoodie509~2019 (talk) 05:43, 1 July 2019 (UTC)

Students adding broken footnotes
I've noticed many Wiki Ed students accidentally add pseudo-footnotes that are links to their sandbox. I recently fixed an assortment of these (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).
There are still some more, which I will probably end up fixing in the near future: History of United States prison systems, Pulse electrolysis, Conscription in Cuba, Neurotubule
I suspect there is something misleading in the Visual Editor that makes it easy to accidentally copy the footnote scaffolding instead of the citation. This issue does not appear to be restricted to Wiki Ed students, but it's more common among them because of their sandbox to article migration workflow. I don't know if you can do anything to effect change here, but I thought it might be something that would be useful to have on your radar, since you appear to be involved with many of the Wiki Ed classes.
I know a few tricks to expedite fixing them, so feel free to ask for help if you ever find citations malformed in this manner. Retro (talk | contribs) 12:11, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
- Also, I'll probably be making a post on a more public page in the near future (probably WP:VPT, and maybe eventually a phabricator filing), but I would like to better understand the scope of the problem before I bring it to wider attention. Retro (talk | contribs) 12:17, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
- Retro - I've noticed that as well. I think that it's a VE thing as well since I've looked in their sandboxes, only to see that the source is set up normally there. I'm definitely eager for any tips that you can give me since I know that fixing these are time consuming (I've done some myself). As far as what they're doing, they're pretty much just copying and pasting from their sandbox to the article while in VE mode. I think that at some point the VE system just bugs out or something and only puts them as links rather than copying the sourcing format. I'm not sure if there's any specific trigger. I thought that it may be due to proxies since they're at uni, but since it happens with non-proxy links that can't be it. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:06, 1 July 2019 (UTC)
- I'd be interested to see any of your previous edits that fixed these; it might be useful for further information. Is there any specific edit summary you use when fixing these?
- As for everything else, I have a few other thoughts, but I'll elaborate on them a bit later (it may end up being tomorrow). Retro (talk | contribs) 19:22, 1 July 2019 (UTC)
- Not in specific - I mostly just mark it as "fixing sources" or make a note of the source being problematic. Admittedly sometimes I get lazy and don't add anything, particularly if I'm busy. I try to curb that habit since it's not really helpful. As for specific diffs, I'll try to see if I can find any, but they're kind of deep in there unfortunately. I wish it was easier to search through edit diffs. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:14, 1 July 2019 (UTC)
