Newspapers.com subscription
[edit]Got your e-mail and registered but it took a bit of work. My WP e-mail is via outlook.com; MS kept zapping the confirmation e-mails from newspapers.com until I went into the account and named newspapers.com as a trusted sender. Got their e-mail very quickly after doing that; it was not put into the junk folder-it just never went into my e-mail. You might want to let people know about adding the newspapers.com domain to their e-mail trusted senders. Thanks, We hope (talk) 00:26, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Reviewing Sandbox Drafts for Student Articles
[edit]Hello @Sadads:. Thanks for all your terrific feedback on student proposals. Students have now posted a link to their sandbox draft in response to your feedback and are ready for your final review of their full article draft. Please try to have this review finished before Monday (August 11) at 6pm. Thanks so much for your help and let me know if you have any questions. Matthewvetter (talk) 12:42, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hey @Matthewvetter: I was seeing those, but wasn't sure when they were due. Good thing I didn't need to respond to them in the last few days: we were withou internet at home, because of a cable company problem :P Will be on it during one of the next couple evenings.Sadads (talk) 15:26, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks @Sadads:. My students have really appreciated all of your help.

Template for Newspapers.com lookups
[edit]Hello, do you know if a template exists for Newspaper.com lookups where an editor could ask for someone to check a reference? This would be helpful for those of us who don't meet the criteria for an account but still would like to read an online reference or at least ask someone else to read it. AlVieri (talk) 22:45, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hey @AlVieri:: feel free to either ping users who has been approved through the partnership, leave a question on the talk page for WP:Newspapers.com and/or leave a query at WP:RX. A combination of these should help you find someone with access, Sadads (talk) 14:09, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Hello Sadads. Regarding my application for a Newspaper.com, I think I don't need one at the moment. I searched through their website to see if they have any data on pop culture articles and like you said, it's very minimal. Ryoga (talk) 03:52, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

[edit]I managed to get the Keesings application in, but for the BNA one I'll still have to go to a webcafe; I got this when I tried to use the link provided: "unable to verify the website's identity.....the OCSP was too old". Sigh. Did manage to get some others signed up for as all that was asked for was username and email.Skookum1 (talk) 09:05, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi. I finally got my clock problem solved (duh, via Esc=setup rather than F2) so got the BNA form filled in....now to go back trying to get rid of the Trojan infection I got a few days ago (which thankfully only affects FB and Chrome settings...).Skookum1 (talk) 00:37, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

I've seen it and registered. I greatly appreciate this Sadad, thankyou!! One thing though, I just looked for Joshua Memorial Park on it and tried accessing a source and it said I need a subscription?? I have registered and confirmed via email? For your lengths to make these agreements which a lot of editors like myself will find incredibly useful. Thankyou!! Long term I think this will prove to be extremely valuable for the development of wikipedia.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:35, 11 August 2014 (UTC) |
- @Dr. Blofeld: Why thank you! Its a lot of fun really: I have been doing WP:WEP and WP:GLAM outreach for so many years, the negotiations part seems rather easy! Moreover, I really enjoy being able to see how much the active parts of the community are doing, and be able to help everyone! (Plus, I am a contractor, so I get a little bit of a reward for this as well!) Sadads (talk) 15:48, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
I believe actually I came across the Newspapers.com website a year or so back and was mesmerized with the sheer number of newspaper articles and thought how incredible it would be for wikipedians to have access to it! I thought it would be one of the most important resources we could possibly have free access to as researchers. I believe I moaned at the time that the foundation weren't doing enough to make agreements with institutions so that you've done this has proved me wrong! I've also applied for the British one which I believe I'd find extremely useful for articles on things like country houses and associated aristocracy, my last related article was Althorp. Long term I really think making such agreements with institutions is one of the most powerful things you can do to further the cause of knowledge. Offhand the other big ones I can think of would be access to the archives of The Times and The New York Times.. I know a lot of British editors would find free access to the Times archives as a huge thing in terms of research. Thanks to a helpful wikipedian who had access I was able to find a fair bit of extra info on Martin Miller (actor, born 1899)'s stage career where online most info is scraps or databases and don't even mention his stage work! It's convincing these big institutions of the importance of wikipedia I think and how they can play a part in it. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:54, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Dr. Blofeld: We are already in talks with The New York Times! The Times will definitely be sometime in our near future, newspapers seem to have a lot of traction in the Wikipedia community. There are so many great sources out there controlled by research institutions, and we really want to close the loop from Research materials-> Wikipedians -> Wikipedia content -> Researchers -> Libraries -> Research materials . If you have ideas about any other sources we should start partnerships with, make sure to leave us suggestions at WP:TWL/Journals, we will probably do another round of negotiations in a few months, and recommendations on who to contact and why would be great! Right now we are swamped in stuff we started in June and July :P Sadads (talk) 16:09, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
Awesome! Thanks for that, I'll keep a note of the TWL page. I often come across things in research which I think would be very valuable to have free access to. I think another important thing you could do is get into contact with other people such as yourself on the foreign language wikis and encourage them to make agreements with their national archives etc, especially French, German, Dutch and Polish wikipedias. I know The German and Dutch wikis have already gone to great lengths to form image agreements and wouldn't be surprised if they'd already made research agreements. I know @Ipigott: has often said he wishes he had access to some of the Danish subscription resources. Obviously it wouldn't be practical to make them on English wikipedia but if Danish wikipedia for instance tried to form an agreement and it was publicised across all wikis what agreements are in the pipeline people could sign up for things on other wikis.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:21, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- We are building WP:TWL branches in several other languages, our big focus right now being Spanish, German, Arabic and Chinese. Dutch definitely will be one of those that we start contacting in the near future, and we can have a meeting between @Ipigott: and User:Ocaasi on figuring out who would be best to coordinate a Dutch branch. Multilingual resources are definitely something in our plans, and something that we hope to keep expanding and working towards, Sadads (talk) 16:28, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
Great news. @Drmies: might be interested in coordinating a Dutch one, @Piotrus: in a Polish one, Ipigott would be interested in Danish language ones I think. What we need I think are multilingual editors who have an interest in working on translating articles from other wikipedias and are from non English speaking countries to bridge the gap between the wikis and try to encourage people on the other wikis to make agreements and make it more a global thing. If other wikis are involved I think we should have a news board of things to sign up for spanning the wikipedias to allow the few editors on here who might be interested to sign up on other wikis for access. Kudos for what you've already achieved to date though and your vision! I'll try to help out with the suggestions.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:40, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the findmypast access but the message "We have sent an email to your registered email address confirming your account details, we hope you enjoy using the advanced features that registration allows/offers" after signing on the website doesn't ring true, I haven't received an email. Still not received an email. Can you try sending me a registration again?♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:17, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

- @Maclean25: Thanks for querying, and sorry I didn't get to it sooner. The WP:TWL work takes a lot of precedence, and life things have intervened in volunteer time for editing. Small inquiry
[edit]Nice of you to say hello yesterday on "Semiotics". I noticed that you might have more background than myself on finding Wikipedia data. My present thought was to prepare an edit dealing with the trends in the creation of FA articles on Wikipedia. It seems easy to get the stats on the number of FA articles that exist right now, but how do I find out how many there were 1 yr ago, 2 yr ago, 3 yr ago, etc. If you know how or can show me how to get one of then, say number of FA articles in 2010, then I could likely figure out how to get the rest. If this data is too hard to find, then just let me know its not easy to get.
- @FelixRosch: Glad that you appreciated the welcome. I think what you are looking for is Wikipedia:Featured_article_statistics. I hope that helps.
- Also, make sure that you sign comments on user pages with four tildas (i.e. ~~~~ ). This tells the software to sign your name and date after the comments. Feel free to contact me if you need any other help, and happy editing! Sadads (talk) 20:15, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- This was the exact info I was looking for on featured articles. While there I noticed there was a similar page for "good articles" as well which was useful. Would you happen to know if a similar page is available for "High importance article statistics," "Low importance article statistics," etc. The total number of Low importance article is growing so fast (over 2Million), that I was thinking of making an edit on the Wikipedia History page regarding estimates of the amount of editor effort needed to systemically improve existing Pages in general for them to move towards Good article status. If you know of any other related pages you could let me know about (I have the 2 pages for Featured and Good article stats, and I don't have them for A-level, B-level, C-level, etc, stat histories), it would be appreciated. (Last time I typed 4 tilde for some reason your id was unexpectedly printed out instead... maybe it will work correctly this time...) FelixRosch (talk) 18:16, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
- @FelixRosch: I don't think there are published sets of importance information. I would poke around Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team. The data does exist in the software somewhere, but I imagine it would require some creative programming and API culling. Here is a couple ways you could find what you are looking for:
- Their is always checking through the history for the 1.0 template at https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=User%3AWP_1.0_bot%2FTables%2FOverallArticles&action=history and for older numbers at https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3AVersion_1.0_Editorial_Team%2FStatistics&action=history .
- You might check out http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:English_Wikipedia_statistics, to see if you can find some related statistics or pages discussing those number.
- Also, there might be something in the archive for Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost.
- However, be cautious on how you use that information on Wikipedia. If you add information onto the Wikipedia history article, make sure that you don't add WP:OR. Hope that helps, Sadads (talk) 18:29, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

- Hello Sadads; Small update that someone seems to be deleting the nice section you had edited and expanded on "Quality control and peer assessment" at the Wikipedia article. There is also an administrative review on the person doing the deletes at this time. Your material looked like a nice edit and the deletion of your edit was unexplained. FelixRosch (talk) 14:52, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
- @FelixRosch: Those changes are explained in the edit summary. It seems like a reasonable change, many of the edits (I believe mostly by you) were WP:OR and not verified in the best way according to policy. Remember, we are looking for a summary of available information, not "truth". Sadads (talk) 18:31, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. Your version was the best one to my reading. There is an unexpected entry toward the end on Talk:Wikipedia from another editor dealing with other deletions by the same individual which you might look at if you have not seen it. Thanks for clarifying. FelixRosch (talk) 16:31, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon
[edit]The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.
If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.
When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

[edit]Hi Sadads. I got approved for an account and filled out the Google form but I haven't received a confirmation and my account still shows no subscription. Maybe I'm too impatient, but its been nearly a fortnight. Formerip (talk) 10:28, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- @FormerIP: Sorry: you got caught in the midst of one our processing gaps: I sent in a batch to our partner right before you signed up, and I sent out messages early last week to get more users for a batch. Your ping reminded me that I needed to get that email out. Your impatience is justified: the current application and issuing process isn't as timely as it should be. We are addressing this with two approaches: bringing in more account coordinators to manage partnerships, that are almost on-boarded, and developing a tool for tracking your information better. In some ways, we are a victim of our own successes, and we are reassessing and recouping to make sure that customer experience is improved, Sadads (talk) 16:45, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- @FormerIP: No worries. Your're doing a volunteer role, for which I'm grateful to you. Just thought I'd check in case I'd lost my slot. I can easily wait for the next batch to be sorted. Formerip (talk) 16:51, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, I am not a volunteer for this one: doing some outside contracting to manage the partnerships. The goal in the near future, is to get most of the account approval to volunteers, we just hadn't fully developed that process for getting volunteers on-boarded (they handle some personal information, so want to do some careful screening, and we didn't have great documentation on account processes until about a month ago). That's happening now, so hopefully, we can make it move quicker and with greater consistency, Sadads (talk) 16:58, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- You should have a follow-up email from me... I still don't appear to have access... any thoughts? hamiltonstone (talk) 10:52, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

BNA email hasn't arrived
[edit]Hi, I have been looking out for it but haven't received anything as of today. Also just checked in spam as you suggested but still nothing. It might have gone to a spare BT account I was using for Wikipedia stuff, but I was recently moved to a new version of BT Mail and appear not to be able to access the account (one of many problems the new BT Mail has). I've updated my email to a Gmail account in the last few days, so if you could send it to me again it should get through to me. Cheers, This is Paul (talk) 13:05, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Divergent (novel)
[edit]Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Divergent (novel) you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Gloss -- Gloss (talk) 19:02, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
BNA access
[edit]Hi, I'm just wondering whether my BNA access was granted. I filled in the Google Docs form a couple of weeks ago, but have heard nothing since. Should I be looking out for a confirmation email? This is Paul (talk) 18:26, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hey @This is Paul:: I have sent your information to the partner, just waiting on response. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 21:34, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- ok, cheers for that. This is Paul (talk) 21:40, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, Thanks for the approval at Wikipedia:Royal Society journals. I got your email, created the free BNA account and submitted the form. Do I have to wait for further instructions from you or will it be activated from your side? Currently it is still the normal free BNA version with free access to only first article. Probably you've already answered this message as I got some idea about your process from the above reply :). --lTopGunl (talk) 18:50, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, my account still seems to be a trial version and I haven't received any follow up related to this. Is it normal for the follow up to be this late (for everyone else too) or it's not going to go as expected? --lTopGunl (talk) 07:34, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
WWI and Dissent
[edit]Hi, Sadads,
There is a good chance I won't be going to your event. In that case, is there anything you would like me to do to make it a success? I'm still somewhat active in WP:MILHIST. 314-717-0380. Mark Schierbecker (talk) 21:54, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
- In the short term, I don't think there is much that needs to be done, except communications. Afterwards, it would be great if someone encouraged users to leverage the list of resources I have compiled on the meetup page. Also, please spread the news of the event widely! We never know who will be able to attend! Sadads (talk) 16:01, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

WWI Event
[edit]Thank you for the invitation to the WWI event. I can't promise I can make it (it depends on how my wife feels and on how much of my Masters coursework I can do) but I'm really hoping I can make it. I'm disappointed not to see more signups thus far and I'd like to help make this happen. Against the current (talk) 17:42, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hi @Against the current:! It would be great if you could encourage/communicate to more people to attend! Invite any and all communities! The more we get out the better. We are just in the process of ramping up the communications outside the Wikimedia community with Digital humanities folks and the WWI museum, so I expect to have some more people discover the event: it would be great if you could mark your maybe in the event page itself (for the morale reason you mention above). I hope to develop the museum as one of the first GLAM-Wiki partners i nthe region (and they are helping us with a project at K-State). Sadads (talk) 17:49, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Age of Sail-articles
[edit]Regarding this revert:
I've been working on articles about galleys and other oared warships for several years. My experience is that this period of maritime history has been described on Wikipedia in accordance to outdated historical research. And I mean outdated as in EB1911-outdated. The focus for most contributors writing about naval history from the period 1750 onwards (at the earliest), and with an extreme focus on the activities of navies of Britain, France and the US. A lot of more general articles on this period, like naval artillery in the Age of Sail are of low quality with few or no up-to-date sources. This is clearly reflected in higher-level article as well: cannon is an FA but still doesn't even mention the word "galley".
Galley tactics is definitely a work in progress, but it has decent referencing and attempts to reflect current historiography, unlike just about any article relating to the "Age of Sail".
Peter Isotalo 09:46, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Peter Isotalo: You have yet to provide a reason to remove the link. Unlike traditional publishing where relationships between items is a form of "trust" in the sources, Wikipedia linking is a tool for guiding readers through different elements of knowledge available to them, and also helping guide readers through the gaps and help them recognize that Wikipedia is still a WP:Work in progress (see the recommendations at WP:BUILD) . The naval artillery in the Age of Sail is of low quality, but it does provide information currently unavailable in the current article, and does so for those interested in particular time period, the end of gallery tactics. Looking back at it I would also have highlighted Sailing ship tactics. Sadads (talk) 17:38, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
- Well if you're seriously not bothered by such a poorly referenced, ill-defined article, then the reason is very simple: naval artillery in the Age of Sail not an elaboration or explanation that relates to oared warship tactics either by topic or content. The article is currently by default focused on sailing ships. Cannon is already linked, though, and has plenty of referenced info on heavy guns.
- "See also"-links under section headings is not very common and should be viewed as special treatment. If it's already linked under the final "See also"-section, there should be fairly good strong reasons for such special treatment.

DYK for Behind a Mask
[edit]On 11 December 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Behind a Mask, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that one scholar suggests Louisa May Alcott wrote the sensationalist novella Behind a Mask to subvert the fantasy of the perfect "little woman"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Behind a Mask. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

@Sadads: Alex can you merge the two Fiction set in the Roman Empire and Fiction set in ancient Rome with using the first one as directive one? It seems great amount of work and I don't think I can successfully pull it of. :-/ You are more qualified than me!

GLAM or WEP mentor
[edit]When we spoke at the last meetup, you suggested that I get more involved with GLAM activities. I really would like to do that, and I'm always interested in advancing my skill set and involvement with the English Wikipedia. Would you be willing to mentor me? I don't think it'd require much of a time commitment. Other than the occasional how-to type question (e.g. AWB, admin stuff, wiki projects), I would mainly be interested in shadowing you to meetups (I'm already going to the local ones, as you know), GLAM events, and perhaps WEP events. I feel it'd be beneficial to watch you a few times before I host anything of my own. As you've pointed out, I might eventually prove useful as a WEP or GLAM liaison at the University of Kansas or Lawrence high schools, given my alumnus status and connections there. Thanks! – voidxor (talk | contrib) 00:47, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hey @Voidxor:, sorry for not responding sooner, its been a busy week. I would very much like to have your help/support planning things! In the short term, the next local event that you might find useful will be at the end of the month: I will be giving a workshop on Wikipedia Education assignments on February 27 at 2 at K-State (see the registration information). I am also exploring if KU can host a Wikipedia Visiting Scholar or two. If you are looking for a bit more access to resources, that would be a good way to get a foot in the door, so to speak, with outreach at KU. Also, I would recommend attending WikConference USA this year as well (I will ping you when they announce it): its a really great place for gaining experience and getting feedback on how to run events, get ideas on outreach opportunities, and learn about larger community issues in the US. They are planning for late July, early August, I will let you know when they announce it: there should be plenty of scholarships for travel, so you likely could attend for little or no cost. Let me know if you need anything else :) Sadads (talk) 16:40, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry for my delay as well; I've also been very busy lately. I think it'd be useful for me to attend your workshop on the 27th, if for no other reason than to observe how WEP works. Should I go ahead and register? I wouldn't be claiming an institution on the registration form, because I am no longer a student a KU and not an employee of the Wikimedia Foundation. Also, here are some words of caution about me and where I hope to go in all this:
- I don't have a laptop at the moment. I've always had a work laptop at any given time, but now that I'm self employed I'm down to desktop computers. I certainly wouldn't want to fly anywhere without my own laptop, but am hesitant to drop the money if it'll only be used for one seminar a quarter.
- I'm not a humanist; nearly all of my interests fall within the STEM disciplines, and thus so will my editing. However, I consider recruitment of new editors to be the best thing I can do for Wikipedia, so it's fine if I branch into the humanities as far as WEP and GLAM are concerned.
- I'm here as one of Jimbo's soldiers to support Wikipedia, and to a lesser degree Commons and Wiktionary. As such, I probably won't hold an interest in Wikia or other non Wikimedia Foundation wikis because it would divide my time too heavily.

- I realize you're busy, so I went ahead and registered. Would you like to meet for lunch (in Manhattan) on Friday the 27th? – voidxor (talk | contrib) 17:56, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hey @Voidxor:, sorry I didn't respond sooner: the message came in when I was busy, and lost track of it in my workflow. I have an extra laptop, if you want to borrow it. It would just be great to have you in the room for the workshop (there is a couple activities at the end that might need some hands on advice for). Go ahead and register or just show up if you want (omit the institution or claim "Wikipedia": its an artifact of our community of practice expectations). I may be at a meeting during the lunch hour with one of our keynotes: however, I would totally be game for grabbing a snack, coffee, or a drink directly after the Wikipedia workshop (I might also be able to do dinner, depending on some of our other scheduling). I will let you know my schedule better by Friday. As for the humanities concern, I am framing the outreach within the audience needs (specific education activity in the humanities); it will be good to learn about how I frame arguments within different audience-based needs. As for the other wikis: my primary work has always been on en-wiki. I have gradually grown to appreciate Commons and Wikisource, and can provide basic information on "whats possible", but I frequently refer people to other experts or reference pages on those wikis. Sadads (talk) 18:25, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
