ron why are you wanting to delete the photo on Kahlils Wiki page??

Because they blatantly break copyright law.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:21, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Ghulam Ahmad

I took the photograph in 1979 in Pakistan.

I will appreciate if you would have told me where you put the photo, so I could have given given the proper license, as I have not been on Wikpedia for a while, I probably did not see the message if you had sent one

Ronhjones,

Thanks for your note on my talk. I posted a question here about relicensing derivative works. It may appear that I'm claiming the work was under a license it no longer is, but I'm not -- rather I'm claiming that the derivative work I created (and that is permitted by the cc-by-nc license) is acceptably licensed. Do you have any thoughts on this? Thanks jheiv talk contribs 08:43, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

I'll look forward to the discussion... I think you might be stuck with the cc-by-nc-2.0... Also all free images are moving to commons - I don't think they will tolerate it.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 12:58, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

About File:Willtoco - Bass Player.jpeg,

Hello Ronhjones!

Few days ago I received a message from you saying that while I provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that I am the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

Well, I created this media entirely by myself but to be honest I've been totally confused with which copyrights and licenses to apply or attach to my own work, in this case a picture of myself.

So looking at your own picture I just followed your codes to do my own. I hope at this time really works but if for some reason isn't right yet so please help me out with the rights codes, copyrights and licenses. I'll really appreciate it.

Cordially, Willtoco!

I think that will probably do for now - (My Rule no.1 : Never upload an image that's already on the web into Wikipedia!) It was only the facebook link that caused the problem, as this image is somewhat bigger.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:15, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Efrat Nakash photos

Hi Ron, I just happened to notice you tagged a bunch of images uploaded by User:Efrat Nakash. Did you notice that the uploader actually says she is that photographer herself? I find that quite plausible. You might says she's something of a self-promotional SPA with a "fakearticle" userpage, but in terms of image copyrights it all seems to add up as far as I can see. Fut.Perf. 23:05, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

I did - BUT the images on the remote web site are bigger, older (or course) and she has specified "All rights reserved", she will just have to get OTRS for all of them or adjust the web site. The user may well be the same person, but without OTRS validation or a web site change we cannot be 100% sure - it is plausible that someone has started a user name with her name to just upload copyright images here. I also suspect if we ignored it now, then someone esle will spot the image match with the web site. Better to sort it out now rather than sort out even more images later - plus what happens when we move them to commons, as per the current plan to get all free images to commons by end2013? Is commons going to be so accommodating - I don't think so.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:42, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Well, okay – I think it's a bit of a stretch, but I guess you've got the letter of the law on your side :-) – By the way, have you checked out the changes at User:Future Perfect at Sunrise/Upload forms draft? I've tried to incorporate something to catch some of the errors we discussed the other day. Fut.Perf. 09:14, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Your proposed deletion is okay. I've replaced the photo of Shelley H. Metzenbaum that you tagged with another photo from an official government source. John M Kamensky (talk) 13:28, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Please respond

Please respond to the comments at User talk:GiacomoReturned. As an administrator you have an obligation to help other users, not merely to enforce the rules robotically. The book cover image is probably proper; it may need a fair use rationale, or it might be a free image because of the age of the book. Jehochman Talk 13:48, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Stay off my page, you are an ignorant waste of space, who has not the foggiest idea what you are talking about. In fact, don't just stay off my page, stay of wikipedia and do the rest of us a favour. Giacomo Returned 20:29, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Frog and saucepan.jpg

Hi Ron. I posted a link to the page for the image on flickr in the summary section. This page contains the licencing info.

I'm going to remove the tag you placed on the file page, but please let me know if I am misunderstanding something.

Cheers. --FormerIP (talk) 23:10, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, missed the [1]... I've changed it to a proper heading, it's better to show the link in full for such a source. Also changed license to match Flickr (Flickr is always 2.0)  Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:14, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Question about files tagged for deletion - permission obtained

Dear Ronhjones,

You have tagged the following mages for deletion earlier today: File talk:WordLensDemo5Feb2012.jpg File:WordLens Screenshot French.jpg

I have uploaded these files under CC-SA 3.0 license yesterday. The copyright holder for these files is Quest Visual, Inc. Your tags mention that there is no evidence that the copyright holder gave permission to use these file under this license. However, I have obtained permission for the company's president Otavio Good, who has sent an email for each file I uploaded to permissions-en@wikimedia.org yesterday.

Please, let me know whether you can check if those emails were received. I would reapply appreciate if you could let me know how to avoid deletion of these files. Alternatively, I would appreciate your advice on how to do file upload properly. I am still a relatively new user, and I thought I have followed the rules correctly by obtaining permission from the copyright holder before uploading the images.

Thank you in advance, ~Zina~ (talk) 03:31, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

I will look out for them especially in OTRS (unless someone beats me to it)  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:43, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
Found 4 OTRS tickets to process (he could have put 4 file names on one ticket - never mind, they were properly done)...
  1. File:Word Lens Demo 23Dec2010.png
  2. commons:File:WordLensDemo5Feb2012.jpg
  3. commons:File:WordLensLogo5Feb2012.png
  4. commons:File:WordLens Screenshot French.jpg
I moved the last three files in use to commons, as we do with free media files - I undeleted No.1, but it's very similar (and not as sharp) as No.2, so I left it here for now, if you don't want it, then let me know and I will delete it.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:08, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Dear Ronhjones,

A couple of days ago I received a message from you saying that due to Wikipedia copyright policy, my photo was deleted. Well, I created this media (Sifu Murat Kaplan) entirely by myself but to be frank I don't know the copyright violation code and licenses to apply or attach to my own page, and similarly to the picture of myself. Looking at some other pages, I followed similar codes to do my own. I would appreciate if you could help me out with the rights codes, copyrights and licenses, then accordingly I will upload the photo.

Sincerely, Murat. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sifumuratkaplan (talkcontribs) 12:53, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

The problem is that the image is already on the internet - as I have told plenty of people, if you want to upload an image to a web site and to Wikipedia then upload the Wikipedia one first. If we find a image match of the same size and quality and an earlier upload date on the remote site, then the Wikipedia one gets tagged as a copyright violation.
The only way to now use the image is to send in the form at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries, changing the grey bits, from the e-mail address shown at http://www.kaplanwingchun.com/EN/contact (important - it shows that the person sending the letter owns the web site - we have no way or linking usernames to real people, User:Sifumuratkaplan could be anyone who decided to create that username.
In anticipation I have created the filled in form for you at User:Ronhjones/OTRS - just copy and paste into an e-mail and send to the address shown - I will process it at OTRS and undelete the image.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:47, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

HLIST

could you check your hlist conversions? I have reverted a couple of your recent edits like here, where the title was mangled, and here, where it had already been converted to hlist, and you added a second hlist. the 'allow wrap' templates were all mangled. it would be great if you could take a moment and go back and check your old edits since it seems like you made hundreds. Frietjes (talk) 00:48, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

I was checking them in two windows side by side - old and new, but I may have missed one, I was planning a recheck anyway.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:51, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
I see the error, it's the commas in the title upsetting the script.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:55, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

On a selfish note your war against badly sourced photos is frustrating. But on the other hand, if laws like SOPA and its ilk ever get passed here or anywhere, its only such assiduous maintenance that will keep Wikipedia safe from the copyright police. listclass = hlist

Hi! This edit of yours broke the markup in the title and some lines of Template:Corticosteroids. I tried to fix it, but one of the lines containing parentheses still don't work. Could you have a look, and also find out whether any of your other listclass = hlist edits introduced similar problems? Otherwise, thanks for improving the accessability of our pharmacology navboxes! Cheers, ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 10:30, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

I go through every one side by side and there's still the odd one that tries to catch me out!
The script (User:WOSlinker/hlist.js) gets confused when a non-link starts the line so it does
|list7 = HALOGENATED, WITH FG AT 16: Fluticasone (Fluticasone propionate
* Fluticasone furoate)

And not as it should

|list7 =
* HALOGENATED, WITH FG AT 16: Fluticasone (Fluticasone propionate
* Fluticasone furoate)
I look for these, as I know it's an issue - this one slipped the net. I am planning a complete re-check anyway when I've completed my list tonight.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:48, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Could you please inform me if you need an address or a phone number, or if just my email reply is enough. Also, could you please inform me if my personal data will be kept confidential. In any case, I hope you will not delete the photo before I give you additional information, if needed. 688dim (talk) 21:43, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Possible sock puppet

Hi. I'm an editor that reported an indenfinitely-blocked vandal, KopJ. You declined his unblock request a while ago, so I thought I'd ask you about this. User BrokenWall3 has been making edits that seem damn-near identical to those that got KopJ blocked: dubious MOS changes, addition of unnecessary infobox fields (alt, reviews, which is outdated) and unsourced changes to several Prince album articles. ex. KopJ's edit to Planet Earth (album), BrokenWall3's. I heard there's some tool for checking socks, but it's somewhat exclusive. How can this be handled? Dan56 (talk) 23:28, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

I'm no sock expert - you cannot fully learn everything here. If you suspect a sock then just report your findings - those in the know will know exactly how to compare - WP:SPI is the link. I checked that neither name has come up before - got to the Start or continue an SPI case here and change SOCKMASTER to KopJ ( so the box contents are Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/KopJ click the button and fill in the form.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:49, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Dear Ron,

I received a message about a week ago that an image (File:Truebinaryclock anthony liekens.png) I uploaded was going to be deleted because it said that there was no proof that the author agreed to the CC Attribution license. As instructed I forwarded the email thread between myself and the author to the permissions-en@wikimedia.org address where the author specified the CC Attribution license. Also as instructed I put OTRS pending on the file description page to prevent premature file deletion. I did not hear anything back but just noticed that the image was deleted. ???

A goethals (talk) 20:35, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Good news and bad news...
  1. I afraid you failed to add the pending notice - I'll restore and add one (allows 30 days to complete now)
  2. I've found the e-mail, and I will answer it
  3. Needs a little more info - see e-mail

P.S. You did add a notice, but it didn't show while in the deletion pre-view - odd, maybe a bug... Not sure why deleted, but every admin has their own preference - I would suggest if ever it happens again, ask the person who tagged the image to remove the tag.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:15, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for restoring the image. I asked the author to verify acceptance of CC Attribution and he sent this to permissions@wikimedia.org.

MSU Interview

Dear Ronhjones,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

There's nothing that needs doing with respect to OTRS.
When you decide to move your page into the main space - just make sure that the box "Move associated talk page" is ticked. Then both pages move together and the OTRS ticket is kept with the article.
I've tidied up a couple of the references for you to give you a start - it will probably need some more better reliable sources adding to it.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:04, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

I did not delete it, another admin did - I do not do tag and delete, it never hurts to have a second opinion. There was nothing on that photo that would suggest it should stay past the 7 days. You should have added an OTRS pending template to the image page - it keeps it for 30 days. We cannot guess if you will write to OTRS or not. I will add the template.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:11, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Chaim Koppelman photos deleted

Hi Ron. Just a heads-up that I'm again uploading the pictures of Chaim Koppelman taken by Robert Bianchi. Apparently the photographer's permission could not be found. He emailed that he did indeed send it. I think the easiest thing to do is to start over and this time I'll ask him to cc: me on the email so that I have a record of the permission in case it can't be found again. Thanks. LoreMariano (talk) 21:32, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

I've restored them as "OTRS pending" - you need to ask me to remove the tag when you add the OTRS pending - the OTRS will give you 30 days to fix it.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:42, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Fantastic. I'm contacting Robert Bianchi today so that he can resend the permission.
I'll be uploading art work today that is held by the Chaim and Dorothy Koppelman Foundation. Dorothy Koppelman will be sending the permission email this week. Is there anything I should know or be aware of so that an inadvertent deletion doesn't happen? LoreMariano (talk) 21:57, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Just top the file info page with OTRS pending (better near the top where we can see it, too far down and it has been known to be missed by the phantom taggers...) Ideally use the form at WP:CONSENT to send to OTRS, see also WP:DCM :-)  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:01, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Photo flagged for deletion - burtwilson_2009.jpg

Hi Ron,

Similar to a previous poster, I too am very confused about copyrights. Even after reading all the policies, I'm very confused as to which license to use and how to prove ownership. Also...in your response...there is supposed to be a link to an example letter, but there is no link...which is further frustrating me.

I'm not even sure if this is the correct way to communicate with you. Sorry...I'm new to Wikipedia and find the help files to be a little difficult to follow.

Bottom line. I can get a letter or email from the photographer. Please advise the best way to handle this and how to then update the photo file. Also...please confirm whether I am using the correct license. Basically, the photographer is not a professional and is a friend of the subject of the photo. The advise the best license to use. I'd also like to know the proper way of doing this in the first place. Also...there is no explanation of what "source" is. It would really be helpful if Wikipedia had clear definitions and examples for all fields and better explanation of the various copyright licenses.

Thanks in advance for your help!

A new copyright template wizard is in the making - but we have soo many... {WP:ICT/ALL) - it's a minefield. Source - where did you get it - for your own photos use own, for web photos, use the url, etc. In this case use the same as the author.
The only way to now use the image is to get the original author to send in send in the form at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries, changing the grey bits. For photos not on the web already, just the authors name and address at the end will do.
Here's one I created for you - User:Ronhjones/OTRS1 - just change the (address) and send from her e-mail address (the home address and e-mail address will NOT be shown on Wikipedia)  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:23, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Ron...I will use my own photo instead. The girl who shot the other photo isn't that PC-literate and seems to be having problems with sending the email. She claimed that I sent her two email addresses. I did not. I sent her the same template you sent me. So...I will upload a new photo. I would appreciate help with making sure I am using the correct license type for my own photo. I will reread the help text, but as previously mentioned, I find it very confusing.

Thanks, Steve Swilson317 (talk) 20:41, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

No problem, let us know if when/if you need an upload checking.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:45, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Ron...Jennifer Rivera stated that she did try to send the email permissions again. Would you please check? Would be nice to have options.

Found. OTRS ticket confirmed. Image restored.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:37, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Ron...I can't find the image.

Steve Swilson317 (talk) 06:54, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ron, I have been looking at the River Lee Flood Relief Channel, and then at the route diagram on the Lee Navigation, and this has led me to try to name the lakes. The lower ones, from King George's Res downwards, are fine, but I am struggling to work out which is which above that. I have stopped at Holyfield Lake, since the one opposite Aqueduct lock ought to be it, according to my OS maps, but then there is another one below New Nazing Road, which also ought to be it. Then there seems to be three below the Stort Junction, and the flood relief channel seems to be to the east, but I think it should be to the west. Also, if I have identified 70 Acres Lake correctly, the flood relief channel seems to go round it rather than through it. Any thoughts? After all this time, can you remember what they all were? Regards. Bob1960evens (talk) 12:07, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

I didn't know they had names! And I've passed them so many times in the boats. There are so many channels I might have added one too many or not enough - the whole area is sort of a flood plain anyway (not that there's much water down these thesedays! Far too much here, the Lanky will never run dry. Anyway, my way of doing a map was a combination of Nicolsons, http://canalplan.eu, the OS maps in http://www.streetmap.co.uk, and GoogleEarth (GoogleMaps is just as good now). I like steetmap - they are OS based - can't beat them. Are you confusing the flood relief channel with the River Lea - that runs to the west. Streetmap says the second lake (below stort/lee junction) is called "Nazing Mead" http://www.streetmap.co.uk/idld.srf?X=538644&Y=207615&A=Y&Z=115&lm=1  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:30, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Re:MotoGP '12

By all means; I believe that all the CRT slots have been taken for the year by the teams that have announced riders! Moto3 is probably the same boat...think there's two on the bottom there. Don't quote me on the latter, though. Haha! Craig(talk) 23:11, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

You totally should...Usually get the closest racing [well it was when it was 125cc] in the class, and a title-contending Brit! Yeah, I didn't know such a thing existed...mind you, the site says I have around 100,500 when I have 105,000 on the edit counter. Bizarre. Seems like another user created that award, when you go through the contributions! Craig(talk) 23:20, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
Okay, I shall say no more about them then. But back to the MotoGP stuff...I personally can't wait to hear those 1000cc engines once again. Stoner annihilated everyone on the 800s. 33 wins and two dominant titles. Now he has a proper factory ride on the 1000s, rather than the LCR bike he had in 2006. Will be hard to stop, I feel. Craig(talk) 23:39, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
Odds-on...blimey. I thought it would've been Evens at best, but I'm surprised at that. Yeah, I'd like to see Rossi win a race again...last year just didn't feel right with him not winning a race...he's only 17 wins behind Ago at present...I don't think anyone would have thought his record would come under threat but a few Rossi seasons of old and he'll be right up there. Heads up

Hi there, I thought I'd point you towards this discussion here Talk:1994 San Marino Grand Prix#Classifications table and ask what I should do, if anything. I had a discussion on this chap's talk page (now blanked) [1] and he put this unpleasant message on my talk page [2]. I've pretty much put up with it so far, through a lack of energy when it comes to filing ANI reports and a feeling that I'm being trolled, but I wanted to see what you thought. Bretonbanquet (talk) 01:54, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Not a troll it's a WP:DIVA - oh, dear he has now retired - what have you done... Anyway, It's often hard to reinforce a MoS in an article, especially at ANI - where you might not find anyone with knowledge of that MoS. Personally, for such cases, I would try to find another editor who is fully up to speed on what goes in which column and why - it never hurts to have a second opinion, then one can argue from a better position - otherwise it ends up as one to one scrap. I usually ask cs-Wolves as he's usually around when I'm here - he edited more motor racing pages than I ever will. The editor may return - they often do, but don't take it to heart - I had one throw in the towel the other week - insisted that a photo of a book on an angle was a 3D image and therefore not a 2D cover artwork... C'ést la vie.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:59, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
It's funny - usually when I upset people in life, it's deliberate, but this guy seemed to take our rather minor disagreement incredibly badly. I can do without his cheek though. If he comes back then I'll take it from there. Asking CS-Wolves is a good idea, he always knows what he's doing. Thanks for your words of wisdom :) Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:55, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Mark/countryman68 needs help with Asuna page

Hello again Ron. How are you? I love your photo of your Standard Poodle. I had a medium-sized black poodle named Peppers growing up. Anyway, I am still struggling with your instructions about how to upload 2 art (logo) files for a car-page called "Asuna". Asuna was a short-lived brand created just for Canada by General Motors. I logged in, then went to "Toolbox", > "Upload File".... but, clicking on the line of type stating "Start", nothing happens. I am on a PC using Windows XP (which I hate), and Internet Explorer 7. Would you have any other tip or instruction for me??? ~ Thank you, Mark. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Countryman68 (talkcontribs) 19:31, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Nothing will work until you are WP:AUTOCONFIRMED = 10 edits + 4 days. If you don't want to wait, you can send it to photosubmissionATwikimedia.org - but there is always a queue (looks like a month as we speak).  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:39, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:HelenShiller.jpg

Hi. My childhood pet was a poodle. I'm not the creator of File:HelenShiller.jpg but I went thru the file permission process already a while back when I uploaded this image. The copyright info is accurate. The owner is anonymous to me. Via e-mail I requested permission and the owner told me they had forwarded permission to Wikimedia. I'm loathe to go back to the well for permission. I'm sad because the article is GA nominated and an image would help. Is the release associated with the image in a wikimedia database? Any way you can check? Thanks! Hugh (talk) 05:03, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

I will check the OTRS database now - but as no ticket has been added, I'm not hopeful, but we'll see.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:33, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
I've tried the following text searches in the OTRS database...
  • HelenShiller
  • Shiller
  • shiller
  • Uptown Update
  • www.uptownupdate.com
  • uptownupdate
  • HughD
Sadly, nothing to report. The main issue here is that free images are being moved off en-wiki (by IIRC End 2013 - there are a lot) to commmons, hence it is necessary to check what we have here, as (in my experience) commons will pick these off so quick. Also it's a quirk of the system that any deletion notice goes to the person that uploaded the image to commons - so the original uploader to en-wiki does not usually get notified - another reason to make sure we only transfer correct images.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:52, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for checking. You reminded me that I myself recently pushed the button to move this image from en-wiki to commons, confident at the time that the release was on file. Now Im confused, is the current issue with the en-wiki image or the commons version or both? And should I open a ticket on this? Thanks again for your help Hugh (talk) 20:36, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
I was referring to the image is on en-wiki - but I do now see one at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HelenShiller.jpg as well...  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:39, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
If you can get the author to e-mail in, it would apply to both images - although once the commons one is "stable", then the en-wiki one would go.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:41, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Trouble with Permissions

I sent you a copy of the email from the copyright holder to permissions. I don't understand why these were removed and why the permission email could not be located. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. LoreMariano (talk) 21:50, 29 February 2012 (UTC) File:Our Injustice, Vietnam-lge.jpg and File:Vietnam-lge.jpg

Hello, Ronhjones. Please check your email; you've got mail!
It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the You've got mail or ygm template.
Queue at OTRS is normally greater than 7 days. If you get a speedy warning in future, ask the tagging editor to remove the speedy tag while OTRS process runs - can take 30 days - images with OTRS pending > 30 days automatically drop into a category for checking anyway. Done them for you anyway.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:06, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Can't thank you enough! I was under the delusion that when a tagging editor tagged for speedy deletion, they worked with you to resolve any open issues....I did put an 'OTRS in process' macro in both files and told the tagging editor the permission had been sent but it had no effect whatsoever! Next time I think I'll send the permissions first; then upload the files so that hopefully the permission will be found right away. I am grateful to you for resolving it. LoreMariano (talk) 22:18, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Good idea to get your OTRS template in before the speedy arrives!  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:19, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Question about permission problem

What's the issue with File:High Desert Museum Poster.JPG image? It's photo I took of the welcome sign at the museum entrance.--Orygun (talk) 04:15, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Posters are 2D artwork (unless they are just text). The copyright always belongs to the creator of the poster. Posters can only remain as an image if they can satisfy the requirements of WP:NFCC, in which case a filled in template from WP:FURG needs to be added, and the cc-by-sa-3.0 needs to changed to non-free poster  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:11, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
I called it a “poster” when I uploaded image, but I’m pretty sure it was painted directly on the wall. It’s too late to check now, but would it make a difference if image was painted or stenciled on the wall? In any case, it was the welcome sign at the entrance to the museum. Just for my education, are photos of entry signs like this ok to upload? How about ones like this with picture included in the sign? Hard to believe someone would have to get sign painter's permission before uploading sign image. Oh well, will let this one go, but would like to know rules about photos of signs so it doesn’t happen again.--Orygun (talk) 05:40, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

New Page Triage engagement strategy released

Hey guys!

I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyes@wikimedia.org.

It's awesome to finally get to start work on this! :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 02:20, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Dear Jon - regarding your note on 'Replaceable fair use File:Derek Ridgers - skinhead backdrop1.jpg' on the entry 'DEREK RIDGERS', the reason for the use of the image and the reason there is no alternative free version is as follows:

RE: DI-REPLACEABLE FAIR USE - There is NO comparable free image available of both singer AND backdrop.
IMPORTANT NOTE - the subject of this image is a combination of two things: the photographic backdrop utilising the Skinhead Girls photo by Derek Ridgers in relation to its use by the singer Morrissey at this particular concert; the subject is NOT just Morrissey and NOT just the backdrop, it is a combination of both - and there is no other free image available of this subject combination, which is why permission was sought and granted by the original author of the image.

Affable Familiar (talk) 12:30, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

It's normal for free use not to be allowed for living people, maybe there's a special case to keep - I'll change it to a FfD so that we can get a consensus on if it should stay.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:46, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Jon, hi. Hi. As I say, the image in question is a very specific portrait of something discussed in depth in the entry 'Derek Ridgers', relating to the use of a Derek Ridgers photograph as the backdrop during the concert portrayed in the image; so the image is not of Morrissey per se, but of him in relation to a Derek Ridgers photograph - the backstory of which is a significant and well-known part of Derek Ridgers ouvre. There is no other comparable image that could be used here, and I think it makes a fair and valuable illustrative point regarding this part of the subject's history. Thanks. Affable Familiar (talk) 14:16, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
  • : The image now seems to have been deleted but without further debate on the 'Files for Deletion' page. So, after the image being there for two years without dispute, enhancing the page in the way it illustrated an event that no other available image could comparably do, the image is now removed, leaving the entry less interesting and less well illustrated as a result. Well done. It seems more of a defeat than a victory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Affable Familiar (talkcontribs) 21:11, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
There is no victory. If an editor does not like the policies, he is entitled to suggest an alteration of them. I have never changed any policies, I try to make sure that the ones we have in place are followed. Because of the various copyright laws of many countries, and the US changing it's laws in the 1990's, image uploads are a minefield. Therefore old images often got missed in the past, and it will take time for volunteers to check them all. Fortunately, most images are now checked at upload time, so that does help prevent bad images overstaying, as was the case.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:29, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

  • I'm saying that I think it did meet the criteria of the policy - see text below - and that very little supporting argumentation stating otherwise was supplied by other editors:

"(Copy of uploader's original response) There is NO comparable free image available of both singer AND backdrop. IMPORTANT NOTE - the subject of this image is a combination of two things: the photographic backdrop utilising the Skinhead Girls photo by Derek Ridgers in relation to its use by the singer Morrissey at this particular concert; the subject is NOT just Morrissey and NOT just the backdrop, it is a combination of both - and there is no other free image available of this subject combination, which is why permission was sought and granted by the original author of the image Affable Familiar (talk) 12:37, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

  • Delete Person still alive. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:22, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
  • The image meets all ten criteria listed in the 'Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria' page; and I can't see that there is any mention among the 10 criteria that a person featured in the image must not be alive. 109.170.220.22 (talk) 20:46, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

RE: 'See WP:NFC#UUI'.
(1) Under Unacceptable Use it says: 'Pictures of people still alive, groups still active, and buildings still standing; provided that taking a new free picture as a replacement (which is almost always considered possible) would serve the same encyclopaedic purpose as the non-free image.

  • So this image falls into the category of those that it would NOT be considered possible to replace with a new image even though the subject is alive because it would be impossible to recreate the circumstance of the image utilising Deerek Ridgers background photograph.

(2) Unnacceptable Use also says: 'However, for some retired or disbanded groups, or retired individuals whose notability rests in large part on their earlier visual appearance, a new picture may not serve the same purpose as an image taken during their career, in which case the use would be acceptable.'

  • This image effectively represents a part of the subjct's career that is in the past and that cannot be replicated or updated, and so no replacement photograph could be taken that would serve the same purpose as this image taken during that part of their career.

NOTE: Morrissey has also announced in interviews that it seems unlikely he will record again, which would move him closer to the defintion of 'retired individuals'; The Guardian quotes, 'A new Morrissey album is growing "less and less likely", the singer has revealed... "I now no longer expect to live long enough to experience an offer to record for a grownup label," he wrote this week.' - http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/dec/23/morrissey-chances-new-album-receding
Affable Familiar (talk) 17:33, 4 March 2012 (UTC)"
And NFCC No.8 says "Contextual significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." - there was no text in the accompanying paragraph to the image - it was just placed on the page, thus it hardly significantly increases readers' understanding of the topic.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:37, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

  • : Re: NFCC No.8. Actually, Ron, that isn't strictly the case as the accompanying text relevent to the image (and which sat next to the image) was and is as follows:

Skinheads
Ridgers early documentation of the skinheads led to several situations where he was personally at risk from some of the individuals on the scene until he became accepted as an observer of the movement.

'In early ‘79 I was already engaged in what eventually turned out to be a lengthy photographic study of the New Romantics (though back then they were not known as such). I’d been documenting this nascent scene in the Soho nightclub ’Billy’s’ and, one evening, a group of about half-a-dozen skinheads turned up. They saw me taking photographs and one of them, a guy called Wally, asked me if I’d like to take some photos of them too. They seemed pretty friendly and not at all camera shy. I took a few snaps, we got talking and Wally suggested I go with the whole gang on one of their Bank Holiday jaunts to the seaside. That was what led, eventually, to five years of photographing skinheads. In those five years I got to know some of the skinheads quite well and liked many of them.' [12]

Many of these photographs were later collected together in the book, Skinheads.[13]

It was after receiving a written request for a print from Morrissey (formerly of The Smiths), that one of Ridgers's skinhead portraits was later made famous by its use by the singer during his 'Your Arsenal' tour. As well as being used on the tour passes, the image was enlarged enormously and used as the stage backdrop for the tour and for Morrissey's now infamous Finsbury Park gig of August, 1992,[14] which led to accusations against the singer by the NME in an article often criticised since for its own inflammatory nature."

NOTE: If you're saying that the proximity of the text to the image should be changed and strengthened and the link between the two made more obvious, then I could easily do that with a redsign of that particular entry section. Would that go some way to solving the NFCC No.8 question? Thanks. Affable Familiar (talk) 16:41, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
(Side note:
the image is also the last of a 3-part sequential series of images showing (1) The original image, (2) Morrissey's request to D.Ridgers for the image, and (3) The image used in situ.)

Personally, I do believe (and so so many others - although it's not a greatly worded policy in this respect - except for non-free covers where is says critical commentary) that a non free image needs a reason to be there - otherwise it can start to resemble a vertical gallery, and any gallery is a non starter. A short paragraph of what the image depicts and how it relates to the article would be good - that would then improve it's "non-replaceable" quality. If you are happy you can achieve that then I can undelete it for you.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:41, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Okay, Ron, fair enough. But could I just clarify two points: (1) When you say 'A short paragraph of what the image depicts and how it relates to the article would be good -' do you mean that I insert a short para on the subject page or that I submit it here for discussion? (2) Or, indeed, do you mean that the sort para should be within the image's box? - If it is (1) and you mean for it to be on the subject page, then the exerpt above (from the entry) beginning 'It was after receiving a written request for a print from Morrissey...' - does that not suffice as a para regarding the image, or do you want something more directly referencing the image? Or if it is (2) then, yes, I can easily solve that one. Thanks again. Affable Familiar (talk) 20:16, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Now I see the problem...! If you care to examine the page pre image removal by the bot - http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Derek_Ridgers&oldid=478450059 - you will note that there are 3 image links just under the "Professional career" heading in a vertical gallery - not attached to any paragraph. Maybe those paragraphs have increased in size over the years and the image has slowly moved away from the text it needs. If it was located correctly then it use will enhance the reader's understanding. I'll have a play with it  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:16, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Have a look at that. I've put in a clear to stop the next heading being chopped, not sure if that's better or not - I'm not sure which looks best. I've added a proper WP:FURG template to the image - see if it's looks OK. I took out the bit about being approved by owner - if he had approved it, we wouldn't be worrying about it's non-free status!  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:36, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Oh, I see now! Yes, the paragraphs had grown and the images had moved their location - but it didn't appear that way on my viewing so I didn't realise it. Thanks for spotting that. So we were actually talking at cross purposes! But yes, your new version is much better as it links the image directly to the text. But, even better, I think, would be if all 3 images (that reference the use of the skinhead photo) run sequentially and Horizontally under the section titled 'Skinheads' (so there'd be the text and then beneath it the 3 images side-by-side, across the screen). BUT... to get them to sit that way on the page they cannot be 'gallery' images as that interfers with the formatting... so if I change them from gallery images to non-gallery images it makes it easier to horizontally sequence them.. BUT it then throws up one problem: when removing the 'gallery' designation, the first two images remain small because they are small resolution, but the third image (the backdrop one) is large resolution so looks too big on the page. SOLUTION? I can either upload a smaller res version of Backdrop Image (making it the same size as the other two), OR do you have the option of changing the size/res of the one currently uploaded? If so, please do that; if not, then let me know and I'll upload a smaller one so we can run all images as non-gallery. Phew, thanks for all your help on this. The entry is going to look so much better with the changes. Affable Familiar (talk) 16:09, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Personally, I would try to avoid anything that looks vaguely like a gallery, someone will winge... Why not put one just above the current one and one on the left in line with current one. As for size - any image is sizable - syntax is at WP:EIS. The Derek Ridgers - skinhead backdrop1.jpg is a little large for non-free, there's a sort of rule that expects the narrow dimension to be around 300px and definitely less than 400px - so you may want to upload a smaller version anyway. You can have hours of fun with image placements...  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:00, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

New mechanisms on Myrosinase Page

Hi Ronhjones,

Sorry for neglecting to upload the mechanisms I added to the myrosinase page into the Commons. I am a new user and am still in the process of learning how to properly make contributions to Wikipedia! I appreciate your help though!

Thank you for your time, Btheta (talk) 07:36, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

That's OK. we get new users all the time, we just want to try to help to point to the correct direction - saves everyone a lot of time later. Happy editing.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:00, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Duplicate images

Dear Ronhjones, Re Patrick Swift. They are not duplicates because I am trying to ensure they remain(they are fair use). I uploaded the images to see how they went with the page but didn't use them. With a couple of images I uploaded them twice as orphaned images are deleted and I thought they had been deleted but perhaps they had not yet been. The other image you refer to I am just going to make fair use.TisTRU (talk) 11:28, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello. You blanked the page last week per an OTRS request, but today somebody added content. Would you please blank it again. Thank you. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 19:31, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Kindly do not call my edits vandalism. It is my right to write on Mbz1 talk page, even if you don't like the content. As not as it doesn't include offensive content (and it doesn't), and not against her specific request, the text can stay there. Broccolo (talk) 19:53, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

The request is to blank - it will stay that way, until she tells me otherwise.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:55, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
She can write to me herself if she wants me to remove what I wrote. I enabled the send email to this user in my preferences. I wrote to Mbz1 many times in the past, and she never had objection to me writing. Broccolo (talk) 20:00, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
She does not have to, she has already written her request quite explicitly.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:02, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Lowbourne: article on Joan Hassall

Dear Ron,

Thanks for the advice. I will go ahead and paste it in. I am convinced that it is a better article. I write for scholarly book collecting journals, and have collected Hassall's work for 40 years.

How did you set up your second sandbox? I am very new to Wikipedia, and am still getting my head around the prtocols, etc..

Jim Maslen, newly retiredLowbourne (talk) 11:37, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

I have more than two... http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Special:PrefixIndex/User:Ronhjones/ - just go to your user page - the URL will shows as http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Lowbourne - and just add a slash and the subpage name directly into the URL and hit return - the option to create a page will be given :-) - so you could have had http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Lowbourne/Joan Hassall rather than the generic "sandbox".  Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:45, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Howard M. Guttman

Dear Dr. Jones: My name is Dale Corey and I created the Wikipedia article on Howard M. Guttman. I received a notice that you had a question regarding the photo that is displayed in Mr. Guttman's article. The photo was taken by his son-in-law, and at the time I posted it I worked with another Wikipedia person, SPhilbrick, to make sure that we observed all the rules and got all the permissions. Your message makes reference to other photos, but I have not posted any others. I am not very experienced in working on Wikipedia, so can you please explain to me what else I need to do at this point.

Thank you very much, Ms. Dale Corey 72.10.210.234 (talk) 16:22, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

The image is tagged with a CC-BY-SA-3.0 template, that puts it into Category:All free media - Most of these files are useless except for the article they (may) appear within. So they are all, where possible, being moved to Wikimedia Commons, where they can be used on any of the hundreds of WMF wikis, just like they were still a local copy, and every image is properly categorised to try to increase it's usefulness. I am scanning through thousands of such images, and sadly there is around 5-10% of them that I suspect would be rapidly deleted if moved to commons, as the commons users will easily spot essential missing items. If you note the version prior to my tag (http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=File:Howard_guttman_large800.jpg&oldid=475082434) - you will notice that the image was already tagged for moving. In addition, it is usually the uploader that then gets any deletion notification, once they get moved to commons the the uploader becomes the person or bot that moved the image - the original author is just noted - so I try to get the images correct before I move them.
Because the file data says "Jason Sheldon, photographer" as the author, which is not yourself, then you need permission from them to publish the file - Wikipedia needs to know that "Jason Sheldon" has agreed to the CC-BY-SA-3.0 - this template means that anyone can use this image even for commercial gain, so we have to make sure that the photographer's copyright has not been mistakenly given away.
If you have e-mails or other correspondence with Jason Sheldon that shows that permission then I can only suggest that they be forwarded to the permission e-mail address, or if you are still in contact, get them to send the form in at WP:CONSENT - the permission e-mail address can be found on that page as well. More info can be seen at WP:DCM  Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:51, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Dear Dr. Jones: Yesterday, photographer Jason Sheldon sent an e-mail to the permission email address you provided attesting to the fact that Howard M. Guttman owns the photo that was posted on his page. However, I see that the photo has been removed. How can I find out if it will be returned to the page now that Mr. Sheldon has emailed? Thank you, Dale Corey Dalecorey (talk) 04:36, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Once OTRS is happy - then they will restore it. Nothing is truly deleted, just removed from public view.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:48, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Thank you very much. I will continue to check the page to see if/when the photo is restored. Dale Corey Dalecorey (talk) 19:18, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ronhjones. I think you have answered my OTRS request on my contribution to the article on fine chemical. After my first email which was apparently not enough to settle the copyright issue I have sent another one with a copy of an authorisation letter I received from the publisher. I wrote it after your answer. Since I hope this should be enough to use the content on Wikipedia and I have not received an answer yet I thought it would be the best to contact you directly. I am not sure how to proceed and hope you can give me a hint. Thanks --PeterRPollak (talk) 21:13, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

I forwarded the e-mail from the subject of the photograph asking me to put the photo on Wikipedia. What does it take with you? --Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 15:19, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

After much searching (there are thousands of messages)! - I eventually found the message (2012020710002361) - it failed to have the file name in it, which is why I could not find it (how can we issue a ticket to an image when we don't know the name?). You had a reply from Sarah requesting more information at 02/28/2012 07:00:42 - there has been no answer from yourself. Did you receive the reply? Do you want me to re-send it to you?  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:03, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Please resend. Mr. Kumar is my employer, but he is out of the country right now and very busy. He rarely communicates with me even about my work for him unless it's urgent. --Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 20:53, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Resent.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:28, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Mr. Kumar sent you the form you required with the attached photograph, and yet you still removed it. I don't understand what it takes. He's got me on this assignment and wants the photo back as soon as possible. --Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 16:19, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
I eventually found it. There are thousands of e-mails every day, the replies get linked by the software using the ticket number in the subject line. New e-mail with no ticket number goes into the queues, it had been there for 5 days, and would probably have been another 10 if I had not looked for it.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:42, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ronhjones I recently submitted a webpage titled SIPRI North America that you flagged for not having appropriate permissions for the use of the picture I had. However, I have checked back today and it says my page has been disallowed. I don't understand where I went wrong, can you please offer me some guidance? Right to Work campaign page deletion

Hi Ron,

I saw that you deleted the following page: 00:34, 5 November 2011 Ronhjones (talk | contribs) deleted page Right To Work campaign (A7: Article about a company, corporation, organization, or group, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject)

I feel that the Right to Work campaign should be documented in Wikipedia, but obviously under control against excessive political exploitation. The campaign ran several marches (Manchester-London 1976, London-Brighton 1976, Liverpool-Blackpool 1977 and possibly later ones. Key points were the Staples Corner attack of the SPG on the first March that led to an Inquiry, use of hi-vis jackets as a symbol, combining music and politics. I see that these marches have been revived, so there could be a problem with the page. If it could be aimed at the "historic" movement then maybe there is something to document. John Deason (the secretary of the campaign) has written a short summary on http://www.marxists.org/history/etol/newspape/isj/1976/no093/nrtwc.htm and the badge is on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Right_to_work_campaign_badge,_c.1976.jpg

I should have a book at home with more information + my memories (!)

Dave

Copyrighted images on Hindi Wikipedia

I hope this is the right place to contact you. First, I suggest you to nominate all such images for speedy delete, in case if there are more images from your blog, including three of them. To do so, you may activate Twinkle and choose the 1st option on a file page. After that, choose the seventh option under the heading "फाइलें", then it will ask you to enter the url. I've deleted those two. — Bill william comptonTalk 23:54, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Abuse Man

File permission problem with File:2012 Fanta free promo Brazil.jpg

Dear friend, as ever, Wiki self called editors abused and can make anything they want with other users as they wish, violating all ethics, laws, copyrights. Now you (all) reach the peak! WHO ARE YOU to say that my picture is not or may not be mine picture??? I have not to prove anything to you. I will not go to some hard do fulfill documents to prove that my work is my work. And I'm passed about arrogant wiki-editors gestures! So you reached your goal. I will not publish anything more in this very vicious system you (wiki people) created and run. Some years ago when wiki permitted anyone, qualified or absolutely disqualified I made all kinds of complains and never getting a response. You "editors" protect yourselves like a corporation laying on anonymous names, fake or real, like ronhjones, who none knows who is and if is qualified to "judge" anything. One point I cna assure you. You are not qualified to say that may work is not not my work!

Just for knowing, I'm talking about an editor's case in Brazil. Then the "editor" was a 15 years old guy of a very small citty almost at the frontier of Paraguay, who had privileges on wiki and entered every night from 11pm to 12pm with only one goal in mind: delete all pages on medicine, and bios. As I know he is still a high ranked editor nowadays. Who are you Ron? What do you realy are do be the judge and executioner of other people who has no way to defend themselves on the accusations?

As I saw about other complains to you, you like to get rid of other peoples pics and the other guy that wrote a bio that you said "infringed copyrights" is a creepy thing. Go one, play with this wikithing, go on violating freedom of speech... Good Work! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Roitberg (talkcontribs) 14:37, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

If you care to read the message - I never said who owned or did not own the photograph. The issue here is very simple. The image existed on Flickr 3 days before it was uploaded here. Therefore we have to treat it as a copy of that image. There is no system on en-Wiki that allows usernames to be linked to real people - that is against policy - effectively all users are equal. We have no way of knowing if the image was uploaded by the owner or not. The only evidence we have is that it was uploaded elsewhere first. The Flickr license is not compatible with Wikipedia, thus as that is the first instance, it is unable to remain without alteration. The reason that I am checking images, is that we are moving all we can off en-Wiki to Commons - if I have moved this image (and FWIW I have moved >4000 images in less than one year) then the Commons Flickr Bot would have caused it to be deleted. You have a simple choice...
  • Do nothing - it will be deleted
  • Follow the instructions at WP:DCM
  • (probably the easiest option) Edit your Flickr image to be CC-BY-SA-2.0 not CC BY-NC-ND 2.0.
If you use the WP:DCM route then drop me a note and I will look out for the e-mail.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:36, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Onboard the Newcastle.jpg

Hello, in regards to [File:Onboard the Newcastle.jpg] I dont understand whats wrong. The picture was not sourced at but also uploaded to my facebook account, so how does that cause a copyright issue? Nford24 (Want to have a chat?) 03:16, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

There is no way I (or anyone else within the normal Wikipedia system) can link any username to a person. Anyone can set up an account with any username they like. Thus if an image is uploaded to somewhere else first, then when it is then uploaded here it has to be regarded as a copy. It may be your photo, but because it was uploaded elsewhere first you lost your ability to claim ownership. You will need to donate the image following the procedure at WP:DCM  Ronhjones  (Talk) 14:58, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Dr. Jones,

You may or may not remember me. I contacted wikipedia in the past asking about uploading an image of my schools crest and you responded to me in an email. You had suggested that I upload it as "fair use". Linda Parks image

Hi,

I'm a newbie at this, so I appreciate your patience. It appeared that you removed the photo on Linda Parks' page. I had first uploaded the image using Fair Use and it was removed on 3/9/12 as it should have been. I read a bit more and then uploaded the image under GPL. Can you explain why it was removed again? Pmacdee (talk) 04:42, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

We have little ways of knowing who any editor is in real life (within the Wikipedia system). Therefore we have to use other means to see if the photographs uploaded really belong to the user. One quick check is to look for earlier copies on the internet with Google Image search. If it has been uploaded elsewhere, at the same or larger size, then the possibility of the Wikipedia entry being a copy is far more likely, and we will check the external web site for licences and claims. My tag for this one was "copy of http://flapsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/Linda-Parks.jpg dated 29 February 2012 21:55:23 linked from http://flapsblog.com/2012/04/06". You uploaded File:Linda Parks Outdoors.jpg on the 14/3/12, some 2 weeks after it appeared on the internet. That web site does not say where the image comes from, and they claim "©Gregory Flap Cole All Rights Reserved" - that statement prevents us from having the image. I think your best choice is to get the photographer (or yourself if that is you) to follow the procedure at WP:DCM, remember to quote "http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/File:Linda Parks Outdoors.jpg" in the submission.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:44, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
