Flags

[edit]

Thanks for your work with the interwiki links on these flag templates. The best approach, in my opinion, is for these links to be moved to an unprotected subpage (usually /doc) so that editors can maintain them without needing administrative help. Therefore in future, could you maybe make this request? Note that Template:flag template documentation will automatically transclude the /doc subpage. Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:06, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree but nevertheless the template itself has to be changed for this by an admin as nearly 100% of them are protected for edits by users without sysop-status. So I can add the documentation on the additionla documentation page but nevertheless a sysop will have to schnage the protected template. --Robby (talk) 15:07, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I understand that. But most admins will just do what you ask them. Unless they work with templates a lot they might not be familiar with the documentation templates. Cheers — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:40, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:52, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

commons categories

[edit]

Hi Robby. In the interests of maybe saving you some effort, it's not necessary to add the category name parameter to the {{commons category}} template, if it's exactly the same as the article title, as you did here. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 11:24, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DH85868993,
indeed at first sight adding the category name parameter to {{commons category}} is of no added value. But why is there then Category:Commons category template with no category set? I already found some bad links where the template did not work due to the fact that no category is available for the corresponding page of en-wikipedia. Best regards --Robby (talk) 18:31, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The catnam parameter of the commonscat template is 'intended for cases where the Commons category name is different from the Wikipedia page name'. A commonscat can be a bad link with or without the catnam parameter, these two things have nothing to do with each other. So if you find a commonscat template with a bad link, then it is useful if you repair it. But if you come across a valid use of a commonscat template without the catnam parameter, then it is not useful to add the parameter. So please don't add the catnam parameter when it is not needed. Thanks. Lklundin (talk) 22:38, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Lklundin,
This is not really new information for me. My question is now what is the use and the aim of the maintenance Category:Commons category template with no category set? As as explained by you I'm not able to see any added value in it!Robby (talk) 23:29, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Robby. According to Template_talk:Commons_category#Cat_for_empty_parameter_1, it seems that the category was originally created with the intention that parameter 1 should always be filled in, to prevent a page move converting a valid link into an invalid one. However, as pointed out at Category_talk:Commons_category_template_with_no_category_set, always populating parameter 1 doesn't definitively solve the problem because Commons categories can be renamed. As also suggested at Category_talk:Commons_category_template_with_no_category_set, a bot that checks whether the target actually exists at the Commons would probably be a better solution. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 02:32, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi DH85868993, as the suggestion to create a bot to verify this was already made in 2012, my optimism to see such a bot appearing in near future is very limited. But all this is still not giving me any added value for Category:Commons category template with no category set. --Robby (talk) 12:55, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I agree. As far as I'm concerned you're more than welcome to nominate it for deletion. DH85868993 (talk) 13:17, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I just suggested Category:Commons category template with no category set for deletion. --Robby (talk) 20:52, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. However, because it's a category, you can't use the {{prod}} template (that can only be used on articles) - you need to follow the process at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Procedure. Let me know if you need any assistance (the process can look a bit daunting if you haven't done it before). DH85868993 (talk) 21:03, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Categories Redux

[edit]

Hello, I was about to let you know that your edit here wasn't harmful but also wasn't needed for that particular category and I just read the above. I hate to see a good editor waste their time because of a shortcoming in Wikipedia.

I handled WP:CFD nominations all the time. Would it be helpful if I nominated the category above on your behalf?

Thanks, RevelationDirect (talk) 00:18, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I just found your listing: it was there for a month and ended in no consensus. That's a pretty representative WP:CFD experience. (-: RevelationDirect (talk) 00:21, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Articles tagged as orphans

[edit]

Hi Robby, I notice that you've tagged some species articles, such as Catharanthus trichophyllus, as orphans. In this case, the article is linked to from the genus article Catharanthus. While more incoming links might be desirable, for many species articles their genus article may for now be their only "parent". So I don't think they are orphans per WP:ORPH. Thanks Declangi (talk) 07:29, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Declangi thanks for the information. I've checked all the articles I've added this tag and verified them and then changed the articles accordingly as to delete this tag where unappropriated (I Hope I found all the articles).--Robby (talk) 18:47, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Robby, all looks well now. Declangi (talk) 19:48, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not remove the spaces before the equals sign in infoboxes, it makes them mnore difficult to read when editing. Also, if someone has put "right" in an image description, leave it there. It does no harm and might do some good. BMK (talk) 01:27, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Commons categories

[edit]

Thanks for patching up the commons cat after my dash style edit. I run into this a lot, and sometimes fail to notice, that styling en text per WP:MOS can break commons cat links. Is there an easy way to change those cat names, or make commons cat redirects to handle the style variation? Is it uncontroversial to fix such thing to follow the en MOS? Tips are pointers would be appreciated. Dicklyon (talk) 22:01, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed the links to commons categories is quite a complex issue. When starting with this issue I checked the page Category:Commons category template with no category set and on the pages listed there I just added the parameter category in order to make the pages disappear from this maintenance category.
But before doing this I first check whether there is such a category on commons and if there is non I deleted the template commonscat from the article page and adding in the summary 'Link to commons category deleted as there is no such category on commons'. This I still do this way nowadays, as I think that wikipedia is for users and users will most probably not appreciate to find themselves on an non-existing page on Commons.
By now if i find such a category I link this commons category on Wikidata to the article from which I found the link (to commons category on), except if there is not just a category about the article on commons but as well an article on commons then I link the articles on wikidata.
Moreover I add the statement (property) P373 (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P373 )on wikidata to the corresponding element on wikidata.
As I am not that sure that I managed to explain this quite complex way of working in an efficient way, do not hesitate to contact me if you need further explanations.
Best regards --Robby (talk) 14:31, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted this edit, because although c:Category:Liverpool to Manchester lines doesn't exist, c:Category:Liverpool to Manchester Lines does exist: the link was broken by Anthony Appleyard (talk · contribs) moving the page without cleaning up afterwards. This is part of a bigger problem, not least of which is the recent series of ill-considered mass page moves carried out by at least three people, see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways#Recent article moves removing capitalisation of 'line'. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:59, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for this. Additionally I've put all interwiki links on thi sperspective on wikidata wikidata:Q802671, where I've as well added the appropriated commons-category. Best regards Robby (talk) 17:57, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you continue to do this (example) - the thing to do is check the page history to see if it has been moved, and if it has (example), add an appropriate parameter to the {{commons category}} instead of removing it (example). --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 12:03, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Dear User:Redrose64 Indeed in this case I've looped the existing category on commons and so I've made the change you mentioned. Generally I look for the corresponding categories and add them on wikidata and eventually fix the link on commons. In order to check how I proceed I invite you to have a look at my contributions on wikidata and not just having a look at my contributions here on en-wikipedia. In the meantime I've added the corresponding information for this item on wikidata. Nevertheless do not hesitate to continue to notice me on errors from my part. best regards. Commons category

[edit]

Can you clarify the following diff? The template page states that if the page name is the same as the category name the parameter should be left blank. If I misunderstood I'd like to know the reason for next time. Thanks - Ai 05:41, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

The two parameters catnam and shownam (1 & 2) are optional, and are intended for cases where the Commons category name is different from the Wikipedia page name. A bot account currently runs a task which automatically fills in the first parameter where it is blank, thus providing some protection against category links breaking when pages are moved. It should therefore be safe to omit this when manually editing pages if the page title matches the Commons category title.

DEar Ai, the reason to add the parameter is to avoid the article/page to be listed in the hidden category Category:Commons category template with no category set. For articles in the main namespace the way I proceeded for this draft article is not necessary there is sufficient to add in wikidata the wikidata:Property:P373 in order to avoid the article to be listed in the previously mentioned maintenance category. If this short explaaiation is not clear enough do not hesitate to recontact me. Robby (talk) 20:17, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's clear, yes. Thank you! - Ai, 12:44, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Robby! About 2 years ago I wrote a biography of a living person article [Chalabyan]. The article has been recently marked as up for deletion. Thanks in advance for your attention to the matter.

Commons category tracking

[edit]

Hi Robby, how are you? I wanted to check in and see how the new tracking categories at Category:Commons category Wikidata tracking categories are working out from your perspective? I've also started mapping out the possible bot edits that could be made based on different scenarios at User:Mike Peel/Commons category resolution - can you have a look and see if they look reasonable, and suggest changes/additions? I'm hoping to show a set of live examples for each case to help convince other editors to support the bot edits (so please, don't fix them all immediately - and if you spot particularly different cases, please point them out!). Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:49, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mike, I'm doing fine again after recovering from a quite long-lasting Uveitis. Concerning the Category:Commons category Wikidata tracking categories they are working well from my perspective. Concerning your list of resolutions I agree with them and think you made a complete analysis. Till now I've not yet spotted particularly different cases. Don't be afraid all the maintenance categories have so many items that it is not possible to fix all of them manually in a short time period. If I come to further conclusions I will leave you my comments here on my discussion page. --Robby (talk) 00:00, 30 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Mike Peel in order to detect discrepencies on wikidata it would be great to have a category (either here on en-wikipedia or in another place) listing the items for which the link to Commons contains a link to a category which is different from the category put as Ps73 on Commons. --Robby (talk) 22:28, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's probably better done on Wikidata. It's nominally supposed to be on d:Wikidata:Database reports/Complex constraint violations/P373, but it seems to be broken at the moment - it ran OK on 2 December though. It's also something that can be queried using sparql. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 01:01, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Mike Peel I noticed today that the following categories: Category:Commons category with local link different than on Wikidata Category:Commons category with page title different than on Wikidata and Category:Commons category without a link on Wikidata are empty. As I used these categories to complete data on wikidata respectivly to fix links to commons categories here on en-wikipedia, I would like to ask you whether you are aware of the reaosn for these 3 categories to be empty. Or in other words is it a bug or a feature? If it is a feature it would be great to know where to find more information on this feature. Best regards and my very best seasons greetings. Robby (talk) 19:24, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's a feature - those have been fully replaced with the new tracking categories now - the first six categories in Category:Commons category Wikidata tracking categories. The descriptions were at Template_talk:Commons_category#Please_test_a_new_version_of_this_template, let me know if any of them are unclear and I'll try to explain them better. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:31, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification Mike Peel, I've re-read the explanantions on Template_talk:Commons_category#Please_test_a_new_version_of_this_template I suggest to add the planations given there for the different categories on the corresponding category-page. Moreover I suggest to propose the now permanently empty categories for deletion as that fact that they remain empty in contradiction to there labelling might be confusing to other editors. On order to avoid further misunderstandings Template:Commons_category#Tracking_categories should from my point of view be modified accordingly.Robby (talk) 06:16, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good points, I'll try to do those soon. I've been working on the bot code, and have now posted it for discussion/approval at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Pi bot 4. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:29, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All done now. In particular, see Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2019_January_2#Commons_category_tracking. Feel free to tweak the descriptions to make them clearer! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:32, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Just to let you know that Pi bot (talk · contribs) is now up and running to resolve issues with the commons category links. It's currently up to D in the articles in Category:Commons category link is defined as the pagename - the remaining ones in A-C are more tricky to sort out. Thanks. please don’t remove Commons categories from articles

[edit]

The Commons categories in articles will have been addded by contributors who know the article content. They are the “ground truth”. Wikidata may hold a copy but it’s just that, an insecure copy. Anyone can change the value on Wikidata without causing any watchlist notification on the article, whereas a vandalism or good faith error on the Commons category in the article will be detected by those who watch the article and corrected. And yes an article can have more than one Commons categories but your changes appear to lose the other ones. Please stop doing this to Australian articles until you have discussed it on the Australian noticeboard. Kerry (talk) 05:55, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Janhavi Acharekar

[edit]

Hello! Just wanted to leave you a note on why I reverted your edit to the redirect target for Janhvi Kapoor. The Janhvi Kapoor page has been repeatedly deleted and recreated, and the alternate spelling (Jhanvi Kapoor) was actually salted. It looks like a couple days ago an IP editor decided to hijack the page for another, entirely different, person with a similar first name. I've already reverted the hijacking and left a warning on their page. Thanks, and happy editing! PohranicniStraze (talk) 23:40, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Commons tag / Bearsden article

[edit]

Hi Robby; you made a change yesterday to the Wikipedia commons tag in the Bearsden article, but for some reason, the newly edited tag did not link to the correct Commons category. I have no idea why this is (although you might understand) so I have undone your edit for the time being. Wikiwayman (talk) 10:44, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Having read through the Village pump discussion referred to above, I have educated myself a little (but only a little) and I think I may have found the problem; there are two Commons Category pages with the same Q number: (Q1908426) and these are commons:Category:Westerton,_East_Dunbartonshire and commons:Category:Bearsden. As someone with local knowledge, I can tell you that Westerton is not separate from Bearsden, it is considered part of it; therefore, the former category should be a sub-category of the latter. However, I'm not sure how to fix this and the Q-number issue as I don't understand how Wikidata works and what unintended consequences there might be of me blundering though the code. Could you help? Wikiwayman (talk) 11:27, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello for the moment I've made the following edit on wikidata: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q1908426&diff=prev&oldid=995839151 I guess this should solve the issue. --Robby (talk) 11:34, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Interested in a challenge?

[edit]

Just in case you're interested in a challenge, I've gone through all of the subcategories of Category:Commons category link is defined as the pagename to sort out the commons category links, and the remaining ones are tricky, as I mentioned at Wikimania. Are there any that you can figure out? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:27, 28 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed it is a challenge I go quite regularly through them but many are quite tricky the easiest are these where the link on wikidata goes to a more specific category on commons as the one linked in the article on en-wikipedia. So, yes I will accept the challenge and keep you updated on my progress. --Robby (talk) 10:50, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel By now i continue the challenge and at this moment the Category:Commons category link is defined as the pagename contains no longer any subcategories with a letter starting with A. But the challenge continues. --Robby (talk) 22:14, 1 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel letters B, I and J done.--Robby (talk) 18:18, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for working on this! I see that there are fewer than 200 subcategories now, which is a nice milestone! I'm working through the articles in the category now, the remaining articles that start with A and B don't have obvious fixes... Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:31, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel The subcategories are below 150, but the remaining one's get more and more tricky. --Robby (talk) 21:18, 10 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think there's lots of easier ones in the other categories. ;-) I'm trying to work through removing the clearly bad links at the moment, both P373 values and the local values here. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:37, 10 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've now gone through the rest of the subcategories again, and I've mostly just removed them or switched them to the sitelink from Wikidata. I expect that there will be some feedback on these changes, and hopefully that feedback will be constructive. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:30, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel:no reactions till now? i'm not really surprised. Meanwhile I've worked on Category:Commons category link is locally defined where I mangaged to change all the categories of the type 'Buildings and structures in xyz' in such a way that the y are no éonger listed in this category.Robby (talk) 21:23, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Two reactions, see Category talk:Castles in Pays de la Loire and User_talk:Mike_Peel#Could_you_clarify. Nice work with the buildings and structures categories, there's more in [1] if you have time to look at those as well. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 05:45, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel concerning [2] I suppose i've found a solution which I apllied for the year 2013, by modifying the following wikidata elements Wikidata:Q8318819 Wikidata:Q7159652 and Wikidata:Q2269142. As the same schema is already applied for the years 2014 till 2019 I do not expect objections to this solution and I will try to apply it for the more then 200 categories of the type 'Category:Buildings and structures completed in ####'. Thanks for your feedback on this. --Robby (talk) 23:28, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel concerning [3] i managed to get rid of all the categories except 4 for which I do not have fou9nd the solution yet, maybe you have some ideas on how to solve them. --Robby (talk) 23:03, 18 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Churches in the Republic of Artsakh

[edit]

Where did you get the idea that no such category existed in Commons? How extensive was your search? Laurel Lodged (talk) 09:16, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed I had just checked the link on the page ans unfortunately i ha not noticed that the link linked to 'Category:Category:Churches in the Republic of Artsakh' and this page did and does not exist on Commons while the page 'Category:Churches in the Republic of Artsakh' exists. I've made another edit on this page and now the link to the existing category works fine.Robby (talk) 21:21, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please unblock me on en-wikipedia in the context explained below

[edit]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Robby (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

Caught by a colocation web host block but this host or IP is not a web host. My IP address is 107.183.50.98. I edit in different locations on my mobile computer and get this message at a friend's home who is definitively not editing Wikipedia or any Wkimedia projects. Robby (talk) 21:24, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Your friend evidently uses a webhost. You will either need to confine your editing to the other locations where you are able to, or if you edit at your friend's frequently, you may request an IP block exemption by following the instructions at WP:IPECPROXY. 331dot (talk) 09:09, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@User:331dot Simply restarting the router at my friend's home solved the problem I got another e-mail from the same webhost (which is the largest internet-provider in my country (60% market share). If avoiding such a block is so easy I have some strong doubts on the effectiveness of such a block.Robby (talk) 07:44, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

We are already aware that is possible. If you wish to discuss the effectiveness of blocks on IP addresses, you may do so at WP:AN. What you seem to be saying is that since a store like Walmart cannot stop all theft, they might as well throw the doors open and give away all their goods, and the same should go for Wikipedia, but I digress. 331dot (talk) 08:49, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Robby,

You tagged this category as being part of a CFD discussion but there is no discussion on the page that the tag links to. Could you either start a CFD discussion and correct the tag on the category page or remove the CFD tag on the category and tag it for speedy deletion, CSD C1? Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 04:22, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz I've started a CFD discussion and the link on the category page is now working properly. unfortunately the CFD discussion entry has not been created automatically when using the CFD template. Sorry for not having noticed and fixed this at the moment of starting this. Robby (talk) 06:09, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to join New pages patrol

[edit]

Hello Robby!

  • The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

A tag has been placed on Category:1990s Pacific hurricane seasons indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 01:31, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
