RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Oh my god, I am so so sorry if you just got 50 billion pings!! that calls for a {{whale}} on me, for sure. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 10:58, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
I've had far more pings for creating Yamaha CP-70, which, having somehow missed having a Wikipedia article for about 20 years, is now being linked all over the encyclopedia as editors discover the article for it, generating a ping every time. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:26, 14 March 2024 (UTC)

A7

Hi Ritchie333, I see you removed the CSD tag at KLGB-LP which is fine, however your rationale that radio stations are ineligible for A7 I don't think is supported by the relevant CSD policy which states A7 does not apply to "articles about albums (these may be covered by CSD A9), products, books, films, TV programs, software, or other creative works, nor to entire species of animals" - no mention of radio stations there. AusLondonder (talk) 15:47, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

I think potentially this could be a redirect to somewhere else, but I'm not sure whether that should be a talk page discussion, an AfD, or some bold action. In any case, a straight unilateral deletion without discussion probably isn't appropriate. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:53, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Ritchie333,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

GA mentorship

Hello Ritchie333, out of all the GA mentors you're the only one who specializes in music which is what I'm here for. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for your help in walking me through the reviewal process as I'm looking forward to nominating Tyla and reviewing Blackpink but I'm scared of initiating a review (I have read the reviewer instructions). I've recently stated participating in the WP:ITN, WP:AFI, and WP:DYK and I wish to expand to obviously lower the immense backlogs. I'll be on the lookout for your response Thank you. dxneo (talk) 17:44, 15 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from Bluetik (03:51, 3 May 2024)

Also, im having some trouble getting my IP unblock request done with Yamla - perhaps I’m out of line, but both this Admin’s original response and their follow up seem to not be particularly thoughtful, and the block is encumbering.

Should I just drop it so I don’t get banned?

Hi there! Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:

Question from Bluetik (13:49, 15 May 2024)

Hello, let me know if this isn’t the right place to ask such a question (there may be a forum for this), but I’ve noticed a phenomenon with a few Wikipedia pages that are created after (and sometimes only or primarily using) a “hit piece” (maybe more helpfully/specifically, one-sided and negative articles). Hello Ritchie333:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in June 2024!

Running from June 1 to 30, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Going Back in Time! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 20 centuries by month's end. Question from Sharnadd (10:41, 25 June 2024)

Hi there is an incorrect piece of information on a Wikipedia page but if you edit it and explain why it was incorrect one editor removes it. They do not disagree that it is incorrect but state it being corrected would whitewash and give credit to imperialistic colonizers. It's about the origins of an item of food. I have tried to explain that using the historical facts does not take away the later contributions of others but this editor does not the page corrected. Is there a way to complain. --Sharnadd (talk) 10:42, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

Both you and Oknazevad are edit warring on the Fried chicken article. If either of you reverts again, we might have to block that editor from changing the article to stop disruption.
The best thing to do is to start a discussion on Talk:Fried chicken explaining your reasons for removing the information, and see who agrees and what consensus, if any, plays out. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:45, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
Sharnadd's edits constitute plain vandalism. First he insisted on changing the country of origin in the infobox despite the origin being well sourced in the article itself, and then when that was reverted he just deleted the parameter entirely. Basically, his way (which does not accurately represent the article contents at all) or nothing.
Frankly, some of this issue comes from the article title being too generic and ambiguous, and not being at southern fried chicken. oknazevad (talk) 11:33, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
It's not vandalism, which is deliberate and malicious editing. Any disruptive editing such as this, is not if it can be shown that each editor is making their edits with the aim of improving Wikipedia. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:07, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

Keir

Alright, Ritchie, I hope you're well! FYI I fiddled with your Keir  :) it occurred to me that he looked a bit superimposed on the box, just using generic red. Obvs can't use a flat red from within the image because there's different hues. But by taking the main colour from each side it looks like his image is part of the box... kind of emerging from it? Also (added later), one where I removed KS from his background completely so he can sit on top of our box's red background. Anyway it's back how you left it. cheers! ——Serial Number 54129 14:17, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Or with gradients! Hello Ritchie DanCherek (talk) 15:54, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
Good one DanCherek! How about a "long" gradient that runs from near-bottom left to top right of our long box, kind of mirroring the two shades of red behind the chap already? ——Serial Number 54129 16:28, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, I just realized that it looked perfect on my screen but as soon as you look at it from a browser of a different size, it doesn't line up. This isn't unreasonable but your extracted Keir probably works best with any background. DanCherek (talk) 16:44, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from Xylan P Ladista from Zippy Roadside Inc (04:54, 19 July 2024)

Ritchie333, My name is Xylan. I work for Zippy Roadside Inc., and we did not see a wikipedia page for us and wanted to create one. I guess I have no idea how to use Wikipedia lol. But we are a small startup, looking to get our things running! Any advice you can give for me on how to use Wikipedia for this topic? I have an article pre-written out that is neutral tone, but I am not sure how to publish and add photos that meet wikipedia standards --Xylan P Ladista from Zippy Roadside Inc (talk) 04:54, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Xylan P Ladista from Zippy Roadside Inc: In short, you don't. Wikipedia is not a means of advertising. We are also not a business directory. Small startups generally do not have reliable, secondary sources that talk about them, which is what you would need to begin to consider an article about your company. I strongly advise against making any attempt to create an article about your company unless you have a lot of such references. --Hammersoft (talk) 01:52, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
I'll hold off for a moment. We saw some community submitted contributions about us on other sites such as Crunchbase and other ones. We did not want to advertise on here at all. Just was looking for a place to start an article about us like others did for us on other sites. Xylan P Ladista from Zippy Roadside Inc (talk) 17:46, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
We're not Crunchbase, nor do we have any intention of being them any more than Crunchbase is in trying to be an encyclopedia. We rely on reliable, secondary sources to support articles here. Without them, an article about your company will never happen. --Hammersoft (talk) 13:14, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Hello. I was just wondering if you remembered where you asked that comment on whether Google Maps can be used as a source about 2 or so years ago? If you can't remember, then no worries. Regards, Roads4117 (talk) 08:05, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from SummoneRise123 on Wikipedia:User pages (20:50, 2 September 2024)

Hey mate,

I was wondering if I could write biographies about influential people who have made contributions to any company, city, country, or anythings that important? If so, what should I keep in mind to ensure the biographies are respectful and accurate, and avoid any potential issues? --SummoneRise123 (talk) 20:50, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

The essential reference is the biographies of living people which explains that we must write about living people and their activities conservatively, using very high-quality source material. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:45, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

@Ritchie333 same; I hope all is well. Roads4117 (talk) 20:06, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
I'm snowed under in real life with things, also being doing stuff like this and I can't think of any articles to write about at the moment, and that's always been the motivation to come here. I think once I fully recharged my batteries, I'll be back. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:44, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from UserAfrica05 (19:19, 4 September 2024)

Hello I would like to create a Wikipedia page about my father who is all over google reserve but don’t have one Wikipedia page I would like to share his experiences his path troughs his studies and challenges . Accomplishments for the country and the integrity he want people to adopt. How do I make a simple page of his bibliography? --UserAfrica05 (talk) 19:19, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

The best advice I can give is to avoid writing anything you have any personal connection with. This essay shows some of the pitfalls you can encounter; particularly, once a Wikipedia article is created, and is deemed to be notable so it should stay, it is very difficult to remove the information. Women in Green's "Around the World in 31 Days" GA Editathon – October 2024

Hello Ritchie333:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2024!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Sorry, several "keep" arguments were directly refuted, as were some "delete" views, so the "merge" option suggested by some seemed to be the option that I felt most people who expressed a view could live with. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:13, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Nohorizonss (20:08, 13 September 2024)

hello, if an editor engages in competitive disruptive editing of an article, what steps can be taken? --Nohorizonss (talk) 20:08, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

The basic guidelines are set out in this page. The first thing to do is start a discussion on the article's talk page, and see if a consensus can be reached. If it can't, then further things can be tried such as getting a third opinion or filing a formal notice for dispute resolution. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 07:48, 14 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Wigandbean (01:11, 16 September 2024)

Hi Ritchie Thanks for being my mentor! One of the things I would like to do is sort out the "roguelike chronology" page tables. Primarily because the table for traditional roguelikes has become polluted with Japanese rpg listings. Most aren't "pure" or traditional roguelikes (ASCII graphics, etc.) and don't belong there. Many don't qualify as hybrids. So my thought would be to move them into their own category table. BUT I wanted to ask you for advice whether I should or not, and if it is worth doing. It will require research on my part--which I have no problem with at all. I'm happy to do it, but I require your advice first. Thanks! --Wigandbean (talk) 01:11, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

I'm afraid I don't know what "roguelike chronology" is - my focus has generally been on British architecture and transport articles. As for a general piece of advice about whether you should do something or not; the general view is you should have a go at doing it on one article, and if you get reverted on that, start a discussion and see what happens. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:53, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
Hi!
Thanks for responding.
I understand. And I'll give it a go.
I'll make some notes and plan it on paper first. I'll need to do some research too. But I was looking for a "project" in general so I think this will do.  ; )
Best,

Question from Omar Azami (15:06, 18 September 2024)

Hi, I have set up an account to add a page. I am using my son's laptop that uses the same Wifi as mine, but when I log into my laptop, an error message appears saying the IP address is blocked. How can I unblock my laptop please?

Thank you --Omar Azami (talk) 15:06, 18 September 2024 (UTC)

Hey there @Omar Azami! Ritchie seems to be away currently and I checked his page by coincidence, so I'll step in here just to be sure the wait isn't too long.
To stop past disruption from other editors abusing multiple accounts, it's practice to ban both IPs and even IP ranges. It's possible that unlucky but supportive editors to be affected in this situation. It's happened to me before when my school was IP blocked, but I was put under an IP block exemption; this is what you'll need. You can find out more about this exemption, and how to request for one, at Wikipedia:IP block exemption. Panini! 🥪 20:25, 21 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Khenku Sinentlahla (09:33, 20 September 2024)

How do I create a page --Khenku Sinentlahla (talk) 09:33, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

Hey there @Ritchie333! Stepping in for Ritchie here so the question doesn't stall too long.
Creating a page can be very tricky, and I recommend it's best to understand general Wikipedia policy by working on other articles first before going all in. Please check out WP:FIRST, as well as some important links to check out which I have left on your talk page. Panini! 🥪 15:58, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Gazingo (20:33, 20 September 2024)

Hello, is there any way to do a pushpin map with the former country infobox? I'd like my article Merrymount Colony to show the colony's location but I also want the features of the former country infobox style. --Gazingo (talk) 20:33, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Gazingo! I'm stepping in for Ritchie juts to make sure questions don't stall too long. I'm not the next best thing, nor am I a third or fourth best, but probably in the top 1000.
It looks like you can use a map image on this inbox by using the |image_map and |map_caption parameters. If you go to Template:Infobox country, you can see the list of all the parameters that work with the template, as well as an example on how to use them. Please ping me here if you need anything else! Question from Charles (Kay Tu) (17:22, 23 September 2024)

Hello, can I ask you a question? How can I create and upload an article or a biography of someone or about myself? Please. --Charles (Kay Tu) (talk) 17:22, 23 September 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Charles (Kay Tu)! I'm here answering questions while Ritchie is away.
This may not be the answer you want to hear, but you should most likely not do this. Please very carefully read Wikipedia:Autobiography to prevent yourself some trouble with various WP:Conflict of interest rules in the future. Panini! 🥪 07:01, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Gazingo (02:31, 27 September 2024)

How do I change an article's title to Italics? --Gazingo (talk) 02:31, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Gazingo! Still me.
Most infobox templates will automatically italicize the article title if necessary. If this is not the case for your article, you can put {{Italic title}}at the top of the page. Panini! 🥪 06:51, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
Putting at the top gives me the message: Warning: Display title "Onrust" overrides earlier display title "Onrust" Gazingo (talk) 15:04, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
Gazingo, {{Infobox ship begin}} just needed a parameter |display title=ital, although there were also some misplaced glyphs. Please have a look at my diffs at here for the fix and here for the first stuff I did that didn't fix the problem. Folly Mox (talk) 17:10, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Anonymous9809 (17:24, 1 October 2024)

Hey, how can I create a new page?? --Anonymous9809 (talk) 17:24, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi Anonymous9809, welcome to Wikipedia! Ritchie333 hasn't edited in a few days, so other volunteers have been stepping in to answer some mentor questions in the interim.
Creating a new article is one of the hardest tasks on the project, and we really recommend you get a feel for how the encyclopaedia operates before making the attempt. You might want to check out Help:Introduction for some basics, and spend some time improving existing articles before attempting your own.
Whenever you feel more prepared for starting a new article, Help:Your first article is the guidance page you'll want to read thoroughly before beginning. Best wishes, Folly Mox (talk) 17:36, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

Hello, how can I request a title change to create consesus for a particular wikipedia article? and if nobody replies for months, can it be moved unilaterally> --Nohorizonss (talk) 20:05, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

If there is no consensus against moving an article, you can simply be bold and do it. I've just done this myself here. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:04, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
