India Image Vote Results Disagreement

[edit]

Hi,

Thank you for voting in the India Demographics Image Vote. I have counted the results of the vote and displayed them here. The top 8 images with the most votes were displayed.

Unfortunately, User:Fowler&fowler believes that he should be the one that gets to pick the final images, despite the fact that all of us have voted. He has called me disruptive, and when I tried to explain myself, he has reverted my explanation on the talk page twice!!! How can a user just delete someone else's comments on the Talk page?

Wikipedia consensus says that the images that most people have agreed upon should be the ones in the rotation. One user can't just pick his own images when all of us have voted. I am not sure what to do.

Please post your opinion here. Thanks. Nikkul (talk) 02:51, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Recent edit in Avatar

[edit]

Hi Redtigerxyz, I saw the IP edit in Avatar before you reverted it. I did not revert because I am not sure if the part aboutDocetism is correct here. There is a citation of course, but the association of the term seems to me to be the opinion of E.G. Parrinder. I have never seen it mentioned in Hinduism that Krishna or Rama were pure spirits and not real persons in the flesh. The way it is writen, I think it is pushing this opinion as fact, or even confusing. Hoverfish Talk 08:55, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rama and Krishna are regarded as human beings, real persons in the flesh who were born and died. I could not read all the three references, found one of them [1]: which says Incarnation is a permanent state, that is - Jesus never merges back into God the Father, but retains his existence. In contrast, Rama and Krishna in Vishnu-centric beliefs die and their spirit merges back into Vishnu, which compared to Docetism. The other Sheth is available on JSTOR. If we can get our hands on it, we can understand better what Sheth talks about the translation of avatar as incarnation. --Redtigerxyz Talk 10:11, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The "according to" makes it somewhat better. Still I find it misleading that in the section "Etymology and meaning" this association to Docetism is made, because that article makes it most central that the avatar is incorporeal, pure spirit, and the text given here seems to suggest exactly this: as different from the idea of God 'in the flesh'. This does correspond to p.111 of the book, which contains the only mention of Docetism I can locate. I feel this is more relevant to "Incarnation: similar conceptions in other religions", which BTW has been placed in the See Also section. Hoverfish Talk 11:33, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

While i was working on the changes you sugggested for Madurai, Srirangam and Tiruvannamalai, I have added this page - Iconography of Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu. Can you please let me know if this can be promoted to GA. Also considering there are atleast a 10,000 siva temples maintained by TN govt (http://www.tn.gov.in/policynotes/pdf/HR_and_CE.pdf]]) and atleast another 20k shiva temples in TN, the importance in Hinduism should be high? Thx for your help. S Sriram(talk - my page - contribs) 12:21, 5 November 2011 (UTC)ssriram_mt[reply]

Regional article. Does not discuss "Iconography of Shiva temples" in general. So it is mid. --Redtigerxyz Talk 14:15, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help identifying the scene in this wall painting. I see what looks like a yagna and several vanaras standing around. Not sure if this is in Ramayana or something else completely--Sodabottle (talk) 21:04, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not completely sure, but is probably the vanaras destroying the yajna of Ravana. As the complete scene is not available, it is difficult to be 100% sure. Ravana's yajna was destroyed by vanaras headed by Hanuman and Angada. --Redtigerxyz Talk 02:53, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is probably Nigumbala yaga performed by Indrajit that was slayed by Lakshmana and vanara army S Sriram(talk - my page - contribs) 04:06, 20 November 2011 (UTC)ssriram_mt[reply]
In Indrajit yajna, in the Ramayana at least, Lakshamana and Vibhishana go alone to destroy it. But it could be that yajna too in the painting. --Redtigerxyz Talk 04:09, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies

[edit]

You are right. My tone was uncivil and please accept my apologies. I have been getting swamped with real life responsibilities and some of my frustration at not being able to manage things smoothly was coming out in sniping at others. I will be taking four weeks off right after I set up the Talk:India page for voting and cast my own vote later today. Please continue to contribute images to the future nominations and good luck. Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 10:41, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Since I have cleared my talk page before the Wikibreak, here is the last post I left there for you. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 21:09, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Before I go away, let me suggest what I see is the main problem here. You are more concerned about "rights" ("I will vote and express my opinions ...") than about "responsibilities." In this latest round, approximately 100 images have been nominated, and these you and I have split equally. I have now taken out the part which said, "Nominated by ***" because its presence would unfairly affect the voters, but there is one simple way of telling which is mine and which yours? Examine the captions. Mine have been written with care; yours are sloppy, sometimes even cavalier. It's not the first time I've told you about it. We have potential voters, many of whom are not that knowledgeable about India, but would want to take part. There is no way they will be able to vote when caption after caption is written in mysterious short hand of the type: "Rajasthani veg meal," seemingly written for an inner circle. In an enterprise such as the FA India, in which people have to cooperate at a high level of functioning, when one person not only doesn't cooperate, but also passively disrupts by being careless, and consistently so, people get upset. Well, at first they merely observe (perhaps impatiently) that the captions needs to be fleshed out. But when you react by both being confrontational on the one hand, and by off-handedly dumping some more sloppy noms on the other, people get upset. In the end, it is me who has to do the cleaning up. A page doesn't just magically go from this random version to this version carefully organized by subject. Someone has to do the work. Someone has to tidy up so that an average wikipedian, unfamiliar with India, can make sense of the vote. I already told you, I was delighted that you were nominating some nice images, but it seems you are more hung up about ensuring that you have al the constitutional rights to disagree than in delivering the product. See you in a month. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 20:35, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Let's be practical. No one outside the inner circle (who are knowledgeable about India) votes. We can perfect captions afterwards for the selected 8 images/section. I have taken the confrontational path now, as I do not want to be a victim of Wikipedia:CTDAP again. Your decree that the main problem is my quest for rights and my "passive disruptive" actions, sums up your POV. Neither your POV or your noteworthy contributions to the article give you any right to accuse me repeatedly. Any thing goes against your will or disagrees with your view strongly, you may be interpret it as confrontation, have an outburst and accuse me of disruptive actions. I have nominated images (not just voted) and done my responsibility, and I have the right to voice my opinions and discord on the talk as well as the right to not be someone's punching bag. If the noms are unworthy, they will be voted upon and thus will not be on the article. I really don't mind that. Why are you worried? --Redtigerxyz Talk 18:03, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The net effect of your dumping hastily picked images on the Talk:India page has been exactly as I had predicted. It has turned people off to the process, and there are not enough votes. When the "noms are unworthy," they are not necessarily "voted down," as you glibly proclaim, they can also turn off the voters, and inhibit the process. That, in effect, is what you have achieved. And, no, decisions are not made by an inner circle. In any case, how, may I ask, have you, with no history of contributions to the India page, achieved membership in this vaunted circle? And, finally, no you don't add the captions afterwards! The voters are spending precious time to make a difficult set of choices. Our job is not to hinder them by providing shabby carelessly written captions, but to help them by providing clear and informative ones. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 04:51, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • :-)...I am not feeling guilty. Its just that I have met a few wikipedia editors who dont take "novice editors" comments lightly. Thus I think that its better to apologize even if not required.I have quite a AfD history where sometimes I have been appreciated and sometimes notand so I have partially learned (still learning :-))to remain neutral in any discussion. But,yes if required I will keep on refuting by citing Wp guidelines and examples as I done to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jyotikalash.Moreover,presently I am in midst of sock puppetry investigation that I have requested. My first and one of the longest "alleged sock puppeting" that I have seen(from 2009-->Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Jethwarp).So, at present I am little bit too touchy about these things(hope it will go away as the matter clears up).Hope to keep on contributing positively in future to WP.Vivekananda De--tAlK 12:01, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Concerns about Naruto Uzumaki

[edit]

I find it strange why the article's nomination automatically failed. Wikipedia is not a fansite. There's no need to add section of about all his abilties or personality traits, or it will be wp:fancruft, leading to unencyclopedic sections. Part II is actually from the same manga, while anime appearances are actually the same as the manga. The model this article uses is GA Lara Croft which does not focus on unnecessary plot details.Tintor2 (talk) 19:48, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Could the description be used for the notes you pointed? I expanded it a little, explaing a bit Naruto's transformations, his friendship, and usage of techniques. However, some of these technques are already covered in Appearances so do you I should some of information like "how to summon toads to aid him in battle" and "later learns the Rasengan–a concentrated orb of spiraling chakra capable of grinding into whatever it touches"? Regards.Tintor2 (talk) 14:40, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Some time ago you requested GOCE to copy edit Matangi, but I see it became GA before we got to it. Just quickly dipping in, I thought it looked very well written already and that perhaps the requested copy edit no longer needs doing. Shall we delete the request, or do you still want anything done? I really liked the article and would have loved to get involved especially one where you have worked so hard. I am grateful to Fowler&fowler of thinking about me. Illness, work, offline and online commitments were just a little bit too much for me. Never mind, once Gandhi reaches GA, you may like to nominate Ahalya for FA as a FACOTM. Will help out from time to time in the meantime. AshLin (talk) 02:36, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help in correction (History of India and Mughal Empire)

[edit]

Hi, may I ask you to help in fixing the red link in the history of India article:

The swastika is a major element of Hindu heiiconography.
As you can see the word - Hindu iconography is spelled incorrectly. Can you please fix it.

Also in the Mughal Empire the forth paragraph:

  • "Following 1725, the empire began to disintegrate, weakened by wars of succession, agrarian crises fueling local revolts, the growth of religious intolerance, the rise of the Maratha, Durrani, invasion by Safavids from Persia, rise of independent kinngdoms of Oudh, Hyderabad, Mysore, Bengal and Sikh empires and finally British colonialism. The last Emperor, Bahadur Shah II, whose rule was restricted to the city of Delhi, was imprisoned and exiled by the British after the Indian Rebellion of 1857."
  • There are spelling errors such as: kingdoms is spelled 'kinndgoms'.
  • Historical inaccuracy: Savafids did not invade, it was Nader Shah.
  • Sikh Empire belongs after the Maratha Empire, due to the others being independent Vassels of the Mughals not really kingdoms.

Correct statement for this paragraph should be:

Thank you, I look forward in hearing back from you. (149.151.144.74 (talk) 02:05, 25 January 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Brahminical v non-brahminical worship

[edit]

Hello Redtiger, I have a query: In two of the articles you contributed to , Khandoba and Vithoba, it is either explicitly stated or inferred that both these deities have non-brahminical sects / cults worshipping them. To my knowledge, brahmins also worship these Gods. My question to you is what is a brahminical sect or who do the brahmins , say of Maharashtra, worship? I appreciate your help. RegardsJonathansammy (talk) 16:44, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your speedy response. Yes, I understand that Yajna, reciting of Mantra is the traditional brahminical worship. However, in contemporary Hinduism, are there strict boundaries between practices of brahmins and non-brahmins. For example, most Hindus of all castes from Western and Northern India that I know of periodically conduct the Satyanarayan puja, have a shrine in their house, visit temples just for darshan and some brahmins join the annual varkari procession from Alandi to Pandharpur. Since you have such a long experience of contributing to articles on Hinduism, may I request you to start a new article on contemporary Hinduism that will cover all the changes to the religion as practiced in recent decades. Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 18:05, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I will start collecting material for the article. Regards.Jonathansammy (talk) 19:03, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Advice on formatting

[edit]

Thanks for the input! I thought the lower template was better as well, but I had some formatting difficulties with it. Do you know how I can change the color of the font in which the "show" and "hide" are written (which control the visibility of the items under each subheading) in that template? And the color of the "v-d-e" at the bottom of the page? If I find a workaround perhaps I could redo the Vaishnavism template.HistoryOfHinduism (talk) 17:32, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for your comments at the James Tod FAC. I've addressed them as best I can for now. There are a couple of sticking points relating to WP:MOS and I'd like to think that others would weigh in with their opinions. You'll probably have more to say yourself. I've never done this process before and I am rather enjoying it! Although perhaps I should not have said that as it will now all go wrong. - Sitush (talk) 21:48, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review limits changed

[edit]

Hi Redtigerxyz,

This is a notice to all users who currently have at least one open peer review at Wikipedia:Peer review. Because of the large number of peer review requests and relatively low number of reviewers, the backlog of PRs has been at 20 or more almost continually for several months. The backlog is for PR requests which have gone at least four days without comments, and some of these have gone two weeks or longer waiting for a review.

While we have been able to eventually review all PRs that remain on the backlog, something had to change. As a result of the discussion here, the consensus was that all users are now limited to one (1) open peer review request.

If you already have more than one open PR, that is OK in this transition period, but you cannot open any more until all your active PR requests have been closed. If you would like someone to close a PR for you, please ask at Wikipedia talk:Peer review. If you want to help with the backlog, please review an article whoe PR request is listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog/items. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:20, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Redtigerxyx. Thanks for the peer review you gave to Augustinian theodicy - I appreciate it. I've made a few comments on the review page regarding some further changes I have made; I was wondering if you'd be able to take a look at those at some point. Thank you. Global Vision Publishing House

[edit]

I've reverted you and left a clarifying edit summary but wanted to post here also. See the comments at Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks/Ghi#Global Vision Publishing House (publisher). I did a Google books search and couldn't find any reliable sources using it as a reference, and in fact the only books that did mention it had it listed as a book available for purchase. Review

[edit]

Hey! Its been a long time. Remember 2003 Afro-Asian Games?

I recently created the article Millennium Park Bus Depot; could you take a look at it and give it a quality-importance rating under WP:INDIA in its talk page? I nominated it for a DYK, and I think it passed too. Now, I aim for a GA (again :D) though it'll be tough. I just wanted your help regarding images; I'm still not familiar with image copyrights and all that, so I was hoping whether you could dig up some freely usable photos of the depot which can be used in the article's infobox. I'd be much obliged if you could. Advance thanks! Btw, what are you working on nowadays? I've moved on to films, and I'm immersed in a ton of film articles :D.

Thanks for the tweaks that you are currently doing. Things are getting a bit screwed up by the contributions of Ror Is King, who is not demonstrating much willingness to collaborate over them. I have discussed this off-wiki with an admin, who has also added to my requests for co-operation at User talk:Ror Is King. Unless something happens very soon, I will be reverting their edits and explaining my reasoning on the article talk page - basically, it is a problem of validation and a bit of concern regarding cherry-picking. It may turn out that I am wrong but the message will explain (it is already drafted and ready to go - I am just giving RIK a bit of time to self-revert). What was quite a smooth process is getting messy because of one relatively inexperienced contributor. I have thought about pulling the nomination but various people think it would be wrong to do so. - Sitush (talk) 18:09, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Universal spirit?

[edit]

Hi Redtigerxyz, I did some few changes in Mahavishnu as many terms were used unexplained and unlinked and the wording was unclear, so following the link to Brahman I notice that the lead describes him as the one supreme "universal Spirit". In western usage "spirit" conveys a very different meaning as what I understand Brahman should be, but I didn't correct it as I am not sure if Soul or Being or what word is best. Can you please either change it or let me know how the word "spirit" applies to Brahma in Hindu philosophy? Thank you. Hoverfish Talk 11:30, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I realize now that the tone of my (either-or) request was not very proper. Sorry for this. Hoverfish Talk 01:17, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Complaint

[edit]

I'm not sure where to put this, which is why it ended up here. I'm sure you know how to fix it. I added a temple I was aware of, to the Vitobha article and a link to the temple. And according to records you deleted my updated within 90 seconds. Which means you didn't even bother to look at what it was. Don't worry, I'll leave your precious article alone since you are apparently the master of all knowledge without even checking. This is why I don't waste my time with Wikipedia. It's knowledge base is severely biased. Thanks for supporting my continued disdain for this website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.226.182.51 (talk) 20:14, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Anon, you added an external link promoting the temple founder. The site had nothing about the 30 ft Vithoba image. --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:52, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Shiva

[edit]

Hey, the article on Shiva has seen a lot of edits by new editors of late. Can you verify that the article is still good enough? (I would have done so myself, but I don't think I have a good knowledge of Shaivism). Thanks, Lynch7 10:17, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is B.S. redtigerxyz. You seem to be a high level editor, so I don't understand why you won't support me to make the Gita article more academic. AssociateLong (talk) 16:45, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to make the article academic, there is no problem. But blanking out referenced sections without discussion or even an edit summary is not the right way to do so. --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:49, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is why all the Hinduism pages on wikipedia are complete junk. AssociateLong (talk) 16:53, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"removed ISKCON material" does not explain why the contested material is wrong. ISKCON material is stereotyped to be wrong, which not the right way to go. --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:59, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well there must be some sort of wikipedia policy against one source having some sort of undue influence etc. AssociateLong (talk) 17:09, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your opposition to UNDUE reliance on one source is valid. If you bring in new references and replace ISKCON reliance, I don't think anybody will object. The fact is the article is poor state, but removing the referenced material (by ISKCON) makes it worse, than better. --Redtigerxyz Talk 17:14, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you recently edited Bhagavad Gita, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Atman (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).
