Education of Hubertina D. Hogan

Thanks for creating the article for Hubertina D. Hogan. The article as you created it says that "She graduated from Cathedral High School in Trenton in 1943, and from Seton Hill University in 1947." I can't find either school mentioned in the source you added or in a Google search. Am I missing it? Thanks, as always, for your efforts to expand the encyclopedia. Alansohn (talk) 17:16, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi Alansohn! Thanks for checking. I should have been more careful. (This particular article is based on a 2021 draft in my files, decided to give it another go; but that's no excuse.) She was Hubertina Dorothy Clayton until she married in 1967, so that's the name that works for finding the education details. There's a picture of Hubertina Clayton on page 15 of the 1943 yearbook of Cathedral High School in New Jersey, which is available on Ancestry (and maybe elsehwere). As Tina Clayton, she is mentioned in ref #3, the 1952 newspaper clipping about Seton Hill alumnae meeting in Philadelphia. But I must have seen the Seton Hill somewhere else to make that connection. Aha, found it: "Life Lines" The Journal of the American Leather Chemists Association 55(12)(December 1960): 700, via Internet Archive. I'll add that one and the yearbook reference now. Penny Richards (talk) 18:44, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification and adding the details. I regained access to Newspapers.com and I was sure that I'd find something, especially given how uncommon her first name is, but no luck. I'll keep on looking. Alansohn (talk) 19:18, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
I was also hoping "Hubertina" would make it easier to find her in the sources. But a lot of her (really interesting!) work was probably sensitive, maybe even classified, and she might have kept a low social profile because of that. Penny Richards (talk) 20:43, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Margaret C. Waites

On 31 October 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Margaret C. Waites, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the ghost of Margaret C. Waites is said to haunt an undergraduate suite at Harvard College's Cabot House, protecting her book collection? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Margaret C. Waites. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Margaret C. Waites), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Harpoot Female Seminary

Hi Penny, I've just started on an article about the Harpoot Female Seminary, founded by Susan Anna Brookings Wheeler. I'm not sure I can scrape together enough to start her biography, but I did come across that she had been a non-graduate student at Mount Holyoke College. I tried finding a photo of her via Mount Holyoke's website but no success. I seem to recall that you have access to some historical yearbooks, particularly the Seven Sisters, so I was wondering if maybe you have better/different access and can locate a school photo of her? No worries if you're busy with other things; the seminary article will be fine without it. Thanks! -- Rosiestep (talk) 17:44, 13 November 2024 (UTC)

I'll have a look around! Penny Richards (talk) 21:59, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
I see that she was at Mount Holyoke much earlier than the era of yearbooks with photos. But there is a picture of her with her family at Yale Divinity Library here, and another portrait of just her here. Both are pre-1900 and almost certainly public domain, but I didn't look too closely at that. Penny Richards (talk) 17:54, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

Anne Clifford

Hallo, I see that you created an article about the theologian and created a dab page at Anne Clifford. I'm not convinced that Lady Anne is not the primary topic for the name, but you apparently think so. In that case the dab page is right, but we don't need the hatnote at Lady Anne Clifford, as "Anne Clifford" no longer redirects there. But I also noticed that you'd put the hatnote in the wrong place (should be ahead of the infobox). I was going to move it, then realised it shouldn't be there anyway so reverted your addition.

An alternative scenario would be to retain the redirect from Anne Clifford to Lady Anne Clifford (instead of creating a dab page), and then a hatnote would be appropriate, but probably {{Redirect}}. PamD 09:22, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

I also noticed that the theologian had a middle name in one of the sources, so added it to the lead and have made redirects from Anne M. Clifford and Anne Marie Clifford, and added her to Clifford (name). And thrown in a redirect from Ann Clifford to the dab page, for those who can't remember which Ann(e)s have an "e". PamD 09:23, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
Sounds good to me! Thanks for doing all the untangling (and entangling), PamD.Penny Richards (talk) 15:08, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

Sources for notables

Thank you for creating the article for Grace Mary Flickinger. If you're adding a notable after creating a well-sourced article, as you did in this edit to Millville, New Jersey, can I strongly suggest that you add a reliable source to meet the verifiability requirement so that there is no ambiguity that the entry belongs in the list? File:HildaGraysonFinney1942.png

Hi Penny Richards. The non-free use rationale template you added for File:HildaGraysonFinney1942.png is malformed and isn't being displayed properly because there's an error in its syntax. I believe this is because you're trying to embed citation templates into the |source= parameter. This is confusing the Wikipedia software since it's unable to distinguish between the various templates and figure out where the non-free use rationale template is really supposed to end. I suggest you remove the citation templates and just add the url for where you found the image as the source. This should fix the problem and allow the non-free use rationale template to work as intended. Once you've done that, you can remove the {{No copyright holder}} template added by the bot. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:59, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

Oh! That's helpful to know, thank you. I'll do that from now on. Will try to fix according to your instructions now. Penny Richards (talk) 15:07, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
Hi Penny. I appreciate you trying to sort things out and you did fix the source parameter problem; in the process of doing that though, you created some other issues. Anyway, I've cleaned things up a bit so they should be OK now. For future reference, it's really a good idea to use any type of WP:TEMPLATE exactly according to the information given on its documentation page because that's pretty much the only way to ensure that the template will work as it's intended to work. If add something to the template's syntax that should be there or remove something that should be there (even by mistake), the software won't know what to do and indicate an error has been made. For reference, the licensing template {{Non-free biog pic}} and the non-free use rationale template {{Non-free use rationale biog}} tend to work well together for images like this; so, I change the rationale to that template.
Finally, you might want to ask about this file at c:Commons:Village pump/Copyright because there's a possibility that newspaper your giving as the source of the image is within the public domain (i.e. is no longer eligible for copyright protection). If that's the case, the photo itself might also be within the public domain. Commons doesn't allow non-free content to be hosted there; so, if you do ask about the image, please explain the file is currently uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content and use the url for the files page as the link for the file. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:30, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
