SNC-Lavalin

[edit]

I began working on this, without noticing that you had already started cleaning it up. What I have done so far is tightened up the prose in the first few sections, and reorganized the part on the various scandals to eliminate most of the duplication. If you do not like what I've done, or if it is contrary to your own plans, please feel free to revert it all, or to keep whatever part of it you want. I'm not going to continue, unless you want me to--it seems in good hands with you. DGG ( talk ) 22:25, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DGG Thanks for your improvements to the SNC-Lavalin article. I have also been working on related articles such as Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act (CFPOA) and Deferred prosecution. As always, the challenge is to keep it as up-to-date and unbiased as possible while editing "live". It is layered and complex. I had used "Legacy issues" instead of "Controversies" or "Criminal charges" because most or all of the alleged crimes took place prior to 2012 and involved individuals who are no longer working at the company. The history of the CFPOA is particularly interesting in the context of SNC-Lavalin, because Canada, compared to other OECD countries, was very lax in its investigations and convictions prior to c. 2015. The 2017 SNC-Lavalin annual report pages 110, 207-2011 provides details on criminal charges with accurate terminology that I hope to add as well. Oceanflynn (talk) 00:10, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think I came there from the Deferred prosecution article. I continue to think that for a overlapping series of charges in different but analogous matters, it's clearer to go matter by matter, rather than chronologically, but it's your choice. DGG ( talk ) 01:03, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, chronology is more of a stage in a process as we work on the most appropriate choices for subdividing into sections and subsections. I appreciate your editing contributions. I would like to see the article reach a point where the maintenance templates can be removed.Oceanflynn (talk) 21:51, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Carl Kline (White House official) for deletion

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page John Robson (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Climate change

[edit]

Greetings! Thanks for your work adding to the new IPCC report. Some of us regular climate editors are trying to migrate IPCC citations to harvnb. See for example the way they are cited in Global warming. If you don't want to, or are unsure how, don't worry! THANKS for your updates regardless. In the bigger picture, if you have time and interest, please consider joining us at the slowly-starting up WP:WikiProject Climate change. (I might be the main person working to figure out all the category and template customizations and its slow going, but we'll be turning on all the project bells and whistles in coming weeks.) NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 15:04, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi NewsAndEventsGuy Thanks for your comment and kind invitation. It is encouraging to read about the newly-created WP:WikiProject Climate change and your role in it. As a veteran editor, along with contributing to content, you are able to enter into polarizing talk page discussions productively and gracefully—there is no topic more polarizing today than climate change.

At this time, rather than formally joining the Project as a member editor, I will continue to contribute from time to time in related articles. I am currently working on IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land in my sandbox and I would like to create an In the News based on this article. I would be delighted to have other editors collaborating on this.

FYI This is just an aside regarding the use of the <ref>{{harvnb}}</ref> and/or the sfn template. harvnb Years ago, I had started to use <ref>{{harvnb}}</ref> in some of the articles I created in the past. At that time, veteran editor User:Dianna quickly stepped in and helped clean up some of my template errors. I read her very useful article entitled [https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Diannaa/Citation_templates "Why I prefer Sfn citation template from an article"]. Another veteran editor user:Redrose64 compared the two templates saying that sfn "produces output which is identical to {{harvnb}} in behaviour and appearance, but dispenses with the need for <ref>...</ref>; differing page numbers are given different ref numbers, but where a given author/year/page combination occurs more than once, they are automatically merged." Redrose64 suggested Reading Southern railway station as an example where the use of {{sfn}} even with 59 inline references, avoids the repetition of <ref>...</ref> tag. [https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_92 Village Pump] As much as I liked the look of the more exotic sfn and harvnb templates, I eventually stopped using them. I wanted other editors to contribute to articles I had created. And I wanted to re-use the same RS in other related Wikipedia articles, where most articles use the easiest default basic reference template. I had wanted to use sfn and harvnb templates because of the alphabetical organization of the references and the more professional appearance. I gradually revisited my older articles where other editors had subsequently added helpful content using standard citation templates, and replaced both the harvnb and sfn with the standard template. Along the way I also followed the advice of an editor to use the citation parameter in horizontal rather than vertical format. I had liked the vertical format for the clarity of filling in the parameter fields but did find the horizontal citation format much less distracting when reading the article's content in my preferred Edit Source vs the Visual Editor option. As I am working on the new article and adding references, I may be adding to references currently in use in related IPCC articles with missing parameters, etc and will use the existing standard citation templates for expediency (to avoid template errors). Perhaps Project members will migrate them to their chosen citation templates when time permits.Oceanflynn (talk) 17:29, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, from my perspective I've hit a double jackpot! Thank you twice! I've booked this to think about citation later. For now, please verify.... are you eager for others to edit your sandbox draft even though its still in your userspace? If so, please consider posting an invite at the talk page for the climate wikiproject NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 19:27, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks NewsAndEventsGuy I will be uploading it in the next few hours to the main space with an under construction template on it. I want to add more mainstream media articles first I think. It is less confusing to get it started that way. I will also create a talk page. The article I created Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C was vastly improved by a whole slew of editors over time.Oceanflynn (talk) 19:33, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Go get 'em! Please do alert the project when it hits article space. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 19:34, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Special Report on Climate Change and Land has its own article space now and it has a talk page. I added the WP:WikiProject Climate change template. I look forward to additions and improvements to the article.Oceanflynn (talk) 20:45, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ITN recognition for 2019 Brazil wildfires

[edit]

Advice

[edit]

I greatly appreciate finding all the sources and adding that to the Amazon wildfire story, but I want to give you some helpful advice for how you are adding this. Your cites are right, but you are using far too many quotes. For example, this sentence you added By August 24 or 25 international media coverage began to include fires in the Dionisio Foianini Triangle (the Brazil-Bolivia-Paraguay border area)[33] with fires destroying savannah and tropical forest "near Bolivia's border with Paraguay and Brazil."[33] In this context, there is zero reason to quote the last part - its a statement of fact from an reliable source, not an opinion. It does not need to be quoted, but may need to be paragraphed. The only real time that you should think about quotes is when repeating when someone is giving a statement of opinion that need to be given in-line attribution (such as Bolsonaro's statements). This might help make what you have more streamlined since you do not have to write towards inclusion of the quote. --Masem (t) 05:01, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Essay?

[edit]

Hi mate, you said "The best Wikipedia articles have resulted from clashes of opinion. (I think there is an essay about that too)." in Talk:The_Coddling_of_the_American_Mind. Do you have happen to have a link to that essay? I think I'm beginning to understand this phenomenon myself. - Sridc (talk) 02:42, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sridc Yes, I first read this years ago in relation to Wikipedia articles and talk pages and it made sense to me. I have not been able yet to find that original essay. There is an old essay that I think was written by an historian, about the "civil war" on the Civil War talk pages. That may have been the first time I saw it in an essay. But I did find this Harvard Business Review article—it focuses more on political diversity. As I come across more on the theme, I can add them here for now. BTW Thanks for the edits on Coddling, I think I will step back on that and wait for other editors' opinions.Oceanflynn (talk) 19:02, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This study "measured the political diversity or polarization of each team of editors behind 232,000 different Wikipedia pages, considering editor groups with a broader range of ideological alignments to be more “polarized.” When this measure of polarization was used to predict Wikipedia’s internal ratings of article quality (ranging from "stub" up to "featured article"), we found that higher team political polarization was strongly associated with higher page quality, far exceeding the quality of similarly sized biased, neutral, or moderate editor teams. This was especially true for political articles, but also those on social issues and science...Political polarization is typically regarded as negative, but we reveal that if the power of diverse, polarized perspectives can be unleashed, it can positively influence quality productivity."

Notice

The article List of countries by carbon intensity has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

info is out of date and not worth the effort of updating

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Page moves - Telus

[edit]

You have recently made several page moves and changes in what appears to be a lack of understanding on your part, on the Telus companies and their corporate identities and structures. If you want to create a timeline for a company, then please feel free to do so. However, this does not mean that you should arbitrarily move entire pages, or disrupt the contents of several other pages to do it, creating new pages with titles that are inappropriate, to then possibly finding yourself in a rabbit hole that may be difficult to get out of, resulting in other editors, which you should have first consulted, stepping in to fix the mess which appears to have been created. -- WILDSTARtalk 19:53, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WildStar The page you created was largely a timeline. The Telus Corporation does deserve a fully developed article following existing articles about conglomerates and international corporations. Adding lists of persons etc is not that helpful. Paragraph form is the Wikipedia standard. I did make an error in the {{about template. I added Telus Communications instead of Corporation as the parent. This was not a lack of understanding but a typo. Your contribution to all the related Telus articles is appreciated. The timeline is useful because there are a number of significant developments that can best be included with a timeline. Most of the references are from Telus so let's try to find other reliable sources to make these articles more robust. Also please be very attentive to not copying verbatim text from any of the RS unless you use quote punctuation. Welcome to Wikipedia and I hope you continue to enjoy editing.Oceanflynn (talk) 20:47, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/When the looting starts, the shooting starts. Pond Inlet

[edit]

I noticed that you had done a lot of excellent work and greatly expanded Pond Inlet. I was curious about something in the section Pond Inlet#Pond Inlet community histories. The paragraph that begins "Inuit youth from Pond Inlet were taken from their families" and later goes on to say "The new organizations they founded upon returning to the Arctic, included the Committee for Original Peoples' Entitlement (COPE), in response to the 1970 Banks Island exploratory oil seismic work that threatened the subsistence of local trappers,". I'm not sure if that should be included. It can give the impression that COPE was founded by people from Pond Inlet. However, it was an Inuvialuit organisation that was in the western Arctic and today is the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. I'm not really sure that it has much relevance to Pond Inlet.

By the way. I'm not sure if you had seen Nunavut mine blockade to continue until concerns are addressed, say Inuit hunters and if it was of any use in the article. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 07:49, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Dale Hodges Park, Calgary, Alberta stormwater panel.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Dale Hodges Park, Calgary, Alberta stormwater panel.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

Notice

The article Real Talk Ryan Jespersen (podcast) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not pass WP:GNG. Searching Google, Google News, Google Books, Google Scholar, Newspapers.com, and the Internet Archive yields only passing mentions of the show or WP:INTERVIEW content which is primary not secondary. Currently cited sources are almost entirely WP:PRIMARY and WP:YOUTUBE. The host might be notable, but the show does not WP:INHERIT that notability. The page is an orphan—no other Wikipedia pages link to it—and as far as I can tell there are no good redirect targets

In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. The article cites "Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) 2013" but no such source is listed in the bibliography. Can you please add? Also, suggest installing a script to highlight such errors in the future. All you need to do is copy and paste importScript('User:Svick/HarvErrors.js'); // Backlink: [[User:Svick/HarvErrors.js]] to your common.js page. Thanks, Renata3 03:32, 4 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discretionary Sanctions Notice - American Politics

[edit]

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Thanks for expanding interest convergence section on Critical Race Theory

[edit]

Wikipedia is often a marvel to me. The Critical Race Theory article didn't even mention the term "interest convergence" until I added it 31 days ago, and now it has been expanded into a whole section! Thanks for tackling that! (Although there are clearly more organizational changes to be made to the core themes. Plenty to do.) Thanks again, Suriname0 (talk) 02:44, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you User:Suriname0|Suriname0 talk for introducing "interest convergence" to the article. I didn't read the article you cited, just the abstract on the human-computer interaction community's use of the concept. And I agree that the Wikipedia process is awesome.Oceanflynn (talk) 22:58, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Price of oil

[edit]

There was a section on COVID which was meaningless. I replaced it with more detail from an article for which I contributed nearly all the content. There are gaps because my sources looked mostly at short-term trends, while the less detailed summary needs more long-term information. [edit]

Hi, I had to revert two of your edits. I explained why in the edit summary, but both were unavoidable due to the guidance the "see also" cannot include links already in the article. And the second issue was that we cannot our court documents as a source as they are primary sources of information. If a news article spoke about the court case, that would be well suited as a source. CT55555(talk) 02:18, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
