Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

On 1 September 2023, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article 2023 Johannesburg building fire, which you created. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 17:32, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from LauraDayan (14:26, 6 September 2023)

Hi! Is there a service that creates articles for you? Thanks! --LauraDayan (talk) 14:26, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

@LauraDayan: At Wikipedia, seeking services for article creation is discouraged. Please visit Wikipedia:Requested articles to request an article be created. Your request will then be assessed by volunteers. If you have any questions, please visit the Help Desk. If you'd like to create an article yourself, visit Help:Your first article. Question from Arizonashep (07:07, 7 September 2023)

Hi Nythar! I am a recently retired (5 years ago) environmental engineer with a lot of experience hiking in the Sonoran Desert here in Arizon. I happen to also know a lot about Earthquake Lake (West Yellwstone MT) because my dad(an engineer for Army Corps of Engrs) was a first responder to the event in 1959 (and I attended many of his public presentations to other engineers). There are a few details about the quake and response to it that are not well known. I think some of these would be of interest to the public. --Arizonashep (talk) 07:07, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

@Arizonashep: Hi! Sorry about the late response. You can add information to articles so long as the content is written neutrally and is supported by reliable sources. Insert the URL of the source between ref tags <ref></ref> and add that to the end of a sentence or paragraph. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 10:05, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

biography publication

am I allowed to submit my review in local language — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nandokha Luke (talkcontribs) 15:15, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

@Nandokha Luke: First, you should know that autobiographies are strongly discouraged at Wikipedia. Second, English is the only language that pages at the English Wikipedia should be written in. There are wikis with other languages that you could edit if you want. Lastly, if you want to submit your user page for review, go to Help:Userspace draft and follow through the process there, although I wouldn't recommend this for your user page because it is unsourced and not notable enough for Wikipedia. Question from Ethel Del (15:07, 3 November 2023)

Hi Nythar! I mainly have questions to do proper citing and editing. I believe I made an error in my citation for an article. Any resources for helping me do proper citing would be welcomed! -E --Ethel Del (talk) 15:07, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Ethel Del. To read about citing sources, see Wikipedia:Citing sources, and scroll down to the specific type of source you're referencing. However, if you're looking for a quicker and easier way to add references, you can use Wikipedia:ProveIt by checking "ProveIt" in Preferences > Gadgets. ProveIt generates citation templates, where you can fill in relevant fields. In some cases it can even automatically generate an entire citation from a URL, although you should double-check the results. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 02:27, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

Invitation to Cornell study on Wikipedia discussions

Hello Nythar,

I’m reaching out as part of a Cornell University academic study investigating the potential for user-facing tools to help improve discussion quality within Wikipedia discussion spaces (such as talk pages, noticeboards, etc.). We chose to reach out to you because you have been highly active on various discussion pages.

The study centers around a prototype tool, ConvoWizard, which is designed to warn Wikipedia editors when a discussion they are replying to is getting tense and at risk of derailing into personal attacks or incivility. More information about ConvoWizard and the study can be found at our research project page on meta-wiki.

If this sounds like it might be interesting to you, you can use this link to sign up and install ConvoWizard. Of course, if you are not interested, feel free to ignore this message.

If you have any questions or thoughts about the study, our team is happy to discuss! You may direct such comments to me or to my collaborator, Cristian_at_CornellNLP.

Thank you for your consideration.

--- Jonathan at CornellNLP (talk) 18:06, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Before signing up, I've got one question, Jonathan: is it safe to assume that the "30-minute exit interview" will be text-based (i.e., conducted through email or talk page)? Nythar (💬-🍀) 02:20, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, it will be purely an online survey; a link will be served directly through the ConvoWizard extension when it's time. (And 30 minutes is a high end estimate :) ) Jonathan at CornellNLP (talk) 16:35, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
A survey sounds good. Thank you, Jonathan. Nythar (💬-🍀) 06:36, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Chicano Culture (15:41, 6 November 2023)

Hello Nythar,

As my handle name implies, I am interested in making contributions that pertain to Chicano and Mexican culture, which often do not have a regular representation in either language due to the lack of institutional support. From a knowledge and representation standpoint, one fairly neutral place I considered, one without politics or heavy controversy, is music. However, the few artists I anticipate adding will not have a major publication cover their work. Interestingly, they do live off of their content, but this irregular number of media articles on them makes me wonder if it's worth making Chicano linked contributions on this front. Obviously, this is a US subculture so there's the difficulty in connecting with even US based editors unfamiliar with this strand of experiences. Even major artists, like Grupo Frontera, who charted at 5 a few months ago, could have their wikipedia questioned. Thank you.

-CC --Chicano Culture (talk) 15:41, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Chicano Culture. It's true that many people who may be notable in real life don't get Wikipedia articles because Wikipedia's definition of notability is specific. A source must be considered reliable, be independent of the subject, and contain significant coverage of that subject for that subject to be considered notable. While I haven't reviewed the article/draft you're referring to, it is possible for a notable artist to not be considered notable according to Wikipedia's guidelines, and then be considered notable when one or two publications publish articles on them, even if they accomplished nothing in the meanwhile. Nythar (💬-🍀) 23:18, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. This definitely helps me level-set. I started with a referent who would definitely fill in the notability requirements and is extremely active, thankfully. This helps not rock the boat on the standards themselves. The individual has appeared as an antagonist in a movie available on Netflix (at least, a few countries/markets) while also having an article from an independent media outlet (several) based in Phoenix, Arizona that was covering concerts. So, niche in the cultural regard, but meeting all the notability requirements. Here's the page: Draft:Conejo (rapper) - Wikipedia Chicano Culture (talk) 23:27, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
@Chicano Culture: I've reviewed the draft. The first source seems to be of low quality, and one might question where it got the information from. The Variety article is fine but only contains a single mention of his name, and passing mentions aren't considered significant coverage. The Fox News article does provide some coverage and mentions his songs, but it could be argued that the coverage is minimal and is only intended to provide context for the extradition story; however, the source isn't too bad. The Phoenix New Times article is partially an interview, and interviews aren't viewed as independent, but some sections possibly aren't part of the interview. Now, it is possible that this article could be accepted but, if I were being honest, I would say that this draft does not seem to be the kind that would be published. You see, articles on artists are especially scrutinized because of the number of people who use Wikipedia to promote their music. I believe that for the time being, the draft needs more high quality sources. Nythar (💬-🍀) 00:24, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Interesting. I can see the validity of the feedback. Having re-read the Phoenix New Times article, it does not seem reasonable to interpret the quote as an interview, but a citation from the artist - they are driving around together, but in the context of concert coverage for a Phoenix indy media style source. I'm sure there are more sources, but man, these people are going to have it rough due to the lack of coverage for that genre. Geez! Thanks a lot. Chicano Culture (talk) 01:28, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
No problem. Happy to help. Nythar (💬-🍀) 06:24, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello again. I've done some digging as far as sourcing as concerned. There seems to be one article entirely about him in a popular LA based blog: Conejo's "Agenda 32" Adds To Already Solid Hip Hop Legacy (dailychela.com) and Conejo Joins Bad Bunny and Nas On Orchard/Sony (dailychela.com) - the sources had slipped my mind since Conejo himself has been so ubiquitous in this sub genre of music. It would never have occurred to me that sourcing was necessary to that degree. However, those seem to be about him for sure. What do you think? Chicano Culture (talk) 20:48, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Sorry about the late reply @Chicano Culture, I was very busy these last two days. These two sources seem to cover Conejo in much more detail. Congrats on getting the article published. Nythar (💬-🍀) 07:54, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you @Nythar - I could not have done it without your feedback. Chicano Culture (talk) 23:58, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Robert Rowen Westerman (20:35, 16 November 2023)

I have been trying to establish a page with 6 sub pages. I am not in control of what I am trying to do. 1. Wikipedia says my page, Robert Rowen Westerman, "does not exist". I can find the text that I wrote, once in a while, under User Page, however. 2. I learned that I put a / and then a name for each of my six subpages, but I have no idea of how to implement this 3. I uploaded images for use with my first sub page, but I have no sub page. 4. I uploaded audio and I need to link it to my first sub page which does not yet exist

The narrative and instructions given by Wikipedia pages are confusing, not very helpful. --Robert Rowen Westerman (talk) 20:35, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
@Robert Rowen Westerman: To create a subpage in your userspace, you should add the / and then type in the name of the subpage. Afterwards, hit ENTER and then click on "Create source" (it's located to the top right if you're editing through a browser). It'll take you to an edit box where you insert the contents of the page and click on "Publish page." Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 22:11, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

@Cowgirl.penguin: Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia. There is no requirement that only English-language sources be used. Just make sure that the sources you're using are reliable. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 06:16, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from DuncanHWest (17:24, 29 November 2023)

Thank you a mentor is a wonderful idea. I'm a newbie but I'm pretty good with tech., I've written lots of JS/CSS/HTML/C++/PHP/SQL etc. full stack on many projects, but never Wikipedia. Today I will review whatever guides I can find and would like to create my first page this year. A point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated for a first time user. Just the basics please and maybe warning about any things to avoid? Thanks for mentoring. --DuncanHWest (talk) 17:24, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

@DuncanHWest: Thanks for contributing. Pages at Wikipedia are written in wiki markup, which should be easy to learn if you already know C++ and HTML. The basics of article creation can be found at Help:Your first article. First, you need to determine if the topic you're researching is notable; if you've got reliable sources that significantly cover and are independent of the topic, it's considered notable. If you've determined the topic is notable, create a draft through Wikipedia:Articles for creation. After clicking on the blue "Click here to start a new article" button, follow the steps to create a draft. Once you've chosen the draft's name, proceed to insert the article's contents, splitting them into segments using headings: ==Heading name here==. See here for how articles should be structured. If you have any questions along the way, please let me know. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 02:52, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Kevin Wolstenholme (16:11, 11 December 2023)

Hi there and thanks for being my mentor.

I am creating the wikipage for my company and want to ensure I get everything correct. Is there a way to save the draft without submitting it? thanks --Kevin Wolstenholme (talk) 16:11, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

@Kevin Wolstenholme: Creating a draft in your sandbox, as you did, is a normal way to work on an article before it is published. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 04:57, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your swift answer, really appreciated. 1 more things if I may:
I read I needed to add the following statement:
"This user has publicly declared that he has a conflict of interest regarding the Wikipedia article Homa Games."
Can this be removed before submitting the entry and is it indeed required? Kevin Wolstenholme (talk) 12:12, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@Kevin Wolstenholme: You are required to disclose any instances where you have a conflict of interest. Must you keep that statement on your userpage? According to WP:DISCLOSE, the important thing is that other users are made aware of your conflict of interest; you could either have that statement on your userpage, indicate your conflict of interest in edits summaries, or add your username to a template on the talk page of the article to which you have a conflict of interest. I suppose that statement isn't required but it is generally encouraged; just remember that you must make it clear that you have a conflict of interest. Nythar (💬-🍀) 19:00, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the detailed reply, really appreciate that. As I'm super keen to ensure I follow the rules here and it's a genuine request from the owners, I know that having that statement box looks terrible and degrades the legitimacy of the entry.
I will look at those other options. Do you feel the conflicts of interest would be suffice in this instance as that would seem to be best option for me. Again, this isn't about pretending or disguising the fact, it's just the fact that it's the first thing that's visible.
Thank you again for all your support Kevin Wolstenholme (talk) 13:08, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
@Kevin Wolstenholme: This box or a similar statement is often added to user pages by editors even if they aren't editing articles on behalf of another person or group, usually simply for transparency. Remember that disclosing the conflict of interest is a must because you are paid by the company you're writing about; in order to not be involved in undisclosed paid editing, I'd keep this on the user page if I were you, as this is considered to be the most transparent option. Please remember that according to WP:UPE guidelines, "You are expected to maintain a clearly visible list on your user page of your paid contributions." So while that statement isn't required, a disclosure of some sort is required on your user page. Please also remember that your COI will likely not negatively affect your draft's status because reviewers regularly encounter such cases. Nythar (💬-🍀) 23:33, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Origin1968 (22:47, 13 December 2023)

Hello! I would like to edit the page on The Woodstock Opera House. I'm laughingly old (83) and was one of the original 1968 t Townsquare Players. I really think that it needs to be mentioned how a small group of us started, cleaned and polished the building, and began putting on four plays a year to reopen and keep the opera house running. Amazing that 55 years later it is going strong. I'm not sure how many of us are left but I do think this part of the history needs to be mentioned! Thanks Mary Harting Sigrist --Origin1968 (talk) 22:47, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

@Origin1968: The article Woodstock Opera House currently mentions that "In 1968, the Town Square Players was established. They were incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1973." To add information about the opera house's history around 1968, please reference a reliable online or print source where these facts are mentioned. If you need help navigating the editing interface I can guide you through the process. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 23:48, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from ClintonHoard on User:ClintonHoard (12:15, 15 December 2023)

Hello Nythar! Pleased to meet you. I am looking forward to working with you as my mentor! My first question is what all pertinent background information should I include in the creation of my user page? And what general background information should I seek to avoid or omit including in my user page? Thank you --ClintonHoard (talk) 12:15, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

@ClintonHoard: An explanation of acceptable user page contents can be found at WP:UPYES, while a list of unacceptable contents is located at WP:UPNOT. In general, if you decide to include information about yourself at your user page, remember that Wikipedia is not a social media service, so try to keep that information limited. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 20:06, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from RaulGarcia271828 on Methuselah Foundation (01:17, 15 December 2023)

Hi, i am a mathematician, engineer and developer - new here. Please review the changes and advise - thanks, --RaulGarcia271828 (talk) 01:17, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

@RaulGarcia271828: You created a list at Numerical analysis; article content should generally be written in prose form. In addition, the links that you're adding to articles are fine, but remember to keep the number of links limited to avoid a WP:Sea of blue. Please let me know if you want a specific edit reviewed. Question from Sherif Isah (12:39, 16 December 2023)

How do I create a page about a business on wikipedia --Sherif Isah (talk) 12:39, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

@Sherif Isah: Follow the instructions at Help:Your first article. Remember that you need reliable sources that significantly cover and are independent of the business you're writing about. Once you've completed the draft, submit it for review. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 19:00, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Loissavage (21:29, 18 December 2023)

Hi Nythar, I attempted to add a sentence to the Giving Tuesday article by inserting the fact that The Lodestar Foundation made the very first grant to Giving Tuesday, which enabled Henry Timms to secure additional grants to initiate the project. The Lodestar Foundation website documents this fact, which Henry Timms, currently the head of Lincoln Center, and Asha Curran, the head of Giving Tuesday, can verify. I am not aware of any publication that documents this fact, except for the Lodestar Foundation website, Please advise me how to add this fact to the article. Thank you. --Loissavage (talk) 21:29, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

@Loissavage: You will need to use a reliable source that is independent of the topic. If the only website where this is mentioned is not independent, that fact ideally would not be added to the article. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 04:09, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
I understand the issue. Would a statement from the founder of Giving Tuesday be sufficient? if so, where would the statement have to be published? Loissavage (talk) 23:49, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
@Loissavage: Such a statement should be published in a reliable source that is independent of the topic. Practically any source so long as it is reliable. Nythar (💬-🍀) 18:53, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from RapGenreKing on Draft:Kye Adams (16:57, 25 December 2023)

How do I change from draft:kye Adams to Kye Adams --RapGenreKing (talk) 16:57, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

@RapGenreKing: Your page is currently a draft. For instructions, please visit Wikipedia:Articles for creation#Submitting for review. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 03:14, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Feeglgeef (06:07, 27 December 2023)

Hi! I have a question about the policy for logos on Wikipedia. The upload thing says that you can not upload images if they are copyrighted (and not yours, of course), which makes sense. My confusion comes from the fact that a bunch of other Wikipedia pages have logos in them that are copyrighted. What can I do here? --Feeglgeef (talk) 06:07, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

@Feeglgeef: Relevant information on this topic can be found at Wikipedia:Logos#Uploading non-free logos. You can upload copyrighted logos to Wikipedia but please make sure you read the page I linked to so that the process runs smoothly. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 09:32, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
But the upload wizard says that "Only upload freely licensed or public domain content. Fair use is not allowed on Wikimedia Commons." The content is not public domain or freely licensed, so what do I do here? Feeglgeef (talk) 19:20, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
@Feeglgeef: Go to Wikipedia:File upload wizard and click on the second option, "Upload a non-free file." That's the correct way to do it. It is true that fair use images are not allowed on Wikimedia Commons, so those images are uploaded locally to the English Wikipedia itself. Nythar (💬-🍀) 12:28, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from SportsSquareEditor (01:31, 30 December 2023)

Hello! How can I create my own article here on Wikipedia? --SportsSquareEditor (talk) 01:31, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

@SportsSquareEditor: Follow the instructions at Help:Your first article. Remember that you need reliable sources that significantly cover and are independent of the topic you're writing about. Once you've completed the draft, submit it for review. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 18:56, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
Can I publish an article that is not just regarding 1 topic, but 4 or 5 at once? SportsSquareEditor (talk) 03:52, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
@SportsSquareEditor: That is possible, but it depends on what you're writing about, so I can't speak generally. An example would probably help. Nythar (💬-🍀) 05:40, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Like if I wanted to talk about the NBA, NHL, NFL, MLS, and PGA in one article, would I be able to publish it. It's kind of like sports news from the previous day. SportsSquareEditor (talk) 20:14, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
@SportsSquareEditor: Such an article would be unencyclopedic. WP:NOTNEWS states that, "Wikipedia considers the enduring notability of persons and events. While news coverage can be useful source material for encyclopedic topics, most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion and Wikipedia is not written in news style." Articles cannot be written to focus on news events from a specific day like this. Nythar (💬-🍀) 22:19, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Brandcr (01:07, 2 January 2024)

Hey thanks for your time in advance. I have a lot of personal and business experience and I want to contribute.

I've made some edits in the past days and I wanted to know how I can make an article from scratch on a topic that doesn't already exist.

Thanks, --Brandcr (talk) 01:07, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Yes, @Brandcr, you can write new articles. Remember that you need reliable sources that significantly cover and are independent of the topic you're writing about to show notability. You'll then need to submit a draft through WP:Articles for creation to get it published, and it will be reviewed first to determine whether it is suitable for Wikipedia. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 04:16, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll start this tomorrow and dig into the links you mentioned too. One of the topic I'm writing about is in fashion industry about meaningful fashion which is more clear to me but the other one about the company I work with called Segan. Can you please direct me on how to write it as an independence piece? and not sound bias but just write the reality. Also for this one the name Segan is already taken so should I name it Segan (fashion brand) or hw would you recommend solving that?
Appreciate your time! Brandcr (talk) 01:17, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
@Brandcr: You can write an article for the company you work for, but make sure to disclose the conflict of interest. A simple box on your user page like Template:User COI is usually enough. As you compose the draft, remember to keep its language neutral and avoid unnecessary details. For the title of the page, "Segan (fashion brand)" is reasonable. Let me know if you have any other questions. Nythar (💬-🍀) 04:39, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks and sorry to keep asking things but I can't find these answers online and everything on Wikipedia looks very confusing:) I feel like it's designed for a writer who knows a lot about coding. I looked into the template and tried a few things but not what specific part I need to have on my user page and how.
I really wish there was a way for them to make an instruction video so people like me don't have to spend a lot of time and waste some of time from mentors like you:) I will keep working on this article and other ones on the side and will wait for you answer.
Thanks for the help! Brandcr (talk) 21:24, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Just to add to that:
After all the searching I added this to my page which seems like it should be enough? But I'm too confused to know at the moment:)
This user has publicly declared that they have a conflict of interest regarding the Wikipedia article Segan(fashion brand).
Brandcr (talk) 21:37, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes @Brandcr, that box is normally used by editors to declare conflicts of interest and is enough. Also, don't feel worried about asking questions; I've got the time to respond. Nythar (💬-🍀) 22:37, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Article

Hello, sir @Nythar I am trying to make an article but the reviewer left was: "likely a covert advertisement". I did not add to the article some advertisement, could you recommend to me what to do? WonderXcom (talk) 14:15, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

@WonderXcom: You're writing a draft on the concept of "Price Monitoring", and the reviewer seems to believe the page is an advertisement. Sometimes articles are created on marketing concepts and contain many covert references to specific corporations. I've reviewed the draft and to me the language doesn't appear to hint to any corporation or group. You could send a message to the reviewer, User talk:HitroMilanese, but for the draft to be accepted you'll have to improve it with additional references and a more encyclopedic tone. Let me know if you have any more questions. Nythar (💬-🍀) 04:13, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from TheWikiCyclone (00:25, 23 January 2024)

Hello, I’m new to editing Wikipedia, so sorry for the mistakes I do here and there. Is it considered disruptive to create numerous redirect pages for cities? For example, if I wanted to make “Helen georgia” redirect to Helen, Georgia, would this cause any disruption to the project? --TheWikiCyclone (talk) 00:25, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

@TheWikiCyclone: The example that you provided is fine; such a redirect is acceptable. We have Mobile alabama redirecting to Mobile, Alabama. When a notable person appears in the future by the name of "Helen Georgia", a page will be created for disambiguation. Some advice though: if you plan on creating thousands of such redirects, please remember to not create too many redirects in a short time span because whenever someone creates a very large number of articles or redirects, they usually face more opposition to those creations. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 05:17, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for the response. I created these redirects just so that it’s easier to access for some people. TheWikiCyclone (talk) 21:07, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Hello. My name is Nicole and I manage content for/share this account with artist H3RO. Is there anything that can be done to overturn this? --Yourh3romusic (talk) 02:10, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

@Yourh3romusic: What you should do if you want to get the draft published is look for sources that aren't merely announcements or articles from websites with unknown or questionable reliability. Question from Herk308 (03:30, 14 April 2024)

Hi, I just did my first contribution. How do I do the thing where I hotlink a word to a different Wikipedia page (where the letters are blue and you can click on them to go to the page)? --Herk308 (talk) 03:30, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

@Herk308: All you have to do is insert a word between two double square brackets like this [[insert article title here]]. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 05:50, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from BenoitMontet (13:03, 15 April 2024)

Hi , Nice to be guided by you. I created a Page about Jean MOntet a French business man. I did it in French and someone told me I had to do it in English. I translated it but I can't find my contrubution? --BenoitMontet (talk) 13:03, 15 April 2024 (UTC)

@BenoitMontet: Your draft is located here: Draft:Jean Montet. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 05:50, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from Shots by ald (10:49, 22 April 2024)

hey, how can i edit and add my informtion --Shots by ald (talk) 10:49, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

@Shots by ald: To edit a page, click on the "edit" button located on the top of a page. Afterwards, you can change the contents of a page. Remember to support your edits with reliable sources, which could look like URLs in between <ref></ref> tags. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 05:54, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

First Article

Hey there, I'm pretty new to Wikipedia and have mostly been making small edits to pages here and there, but I am planning on starting a new article about a poem. Do you have any advice for my first page? Thanks a lot!

-Roosterchz Roosterchz (talk) 13:20, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Roosterchz. First, you need to determine if the poem you're writing about is notable; if you've got reliable sources that significantly cover and are independent of the poem, it's considered notable. If you've determined that the poem is notable, create a draft through Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Nythar (💬-🍀) 07:00, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, I asked around in the tearoom and I am still not convinced the poem is notable enough. It's a South African poem by Guy Butler. I found the poem itself in a book of South African Literature.
Thanks again for the response! Roosterchz (talk) 07:15, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

EC

Hi, re "Users don't have to have EC rights to comment on talk pages", to clarify, just in case there is a misunderstanding, non-EC users can only submit edit requests on talk pages for articles covered by WP:ARBECR like 2024 Haret Hreik airstrike. They can't comment or participate in consensus forming discussions. What precisely qualifies as an edit request has a bit of wiggle room. Sean.hoyland (talk) 10:53, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

@Sean.hoyland: Thanks for reminding me. At that talk page I suppose the section "Title should be changed to assassination attempt for now" can reasonably be considered an edit request made by a likely inexperienced user (since it most often takes a bit of work to move an article and this can't easily be done to fulfill an edit request). I just don't think it was wise to indiscriminately remove most of the comments posted by non-EC users. Nythar (💬-🍀) 11:06, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
It's all a bit subjective unfortunately (although maybe that's good, I don't know). I would have let those edits remain on the talk page too. They are close enough to edit requests for me, at least in the spirit of edit requests. In general, editors strongly discriminate against non-constructive soapboxing, firestarters, advocacy etc. and generally give edit request-like things that have specificity, sources etc. a pass. Why are you blanking article talk pages?

As in your recent edits. Per WP:ARCHIVENOTDELETE, aren't article talk pages supposed to be archived not blanked? - Shearonink (talk) 15:57, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

They are absolutely supposed to be archived. I have begun undoing your edits. Please stop them immediately, or you will be reported for disruptive editing. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 16:12, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
This is such a huge issue and it looks like there are many, maybe even hundreds of these problematic edits to undo, these blankings might need a wholesale admin action. Shearonink (talk) 16:36, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
@Shearonink I am about to file a report to do just that. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 16:48, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
@Shearonik: @QuietHere: First of all WP:AIV is not the appropriate venue to solve an issue like this. Shearonink asked me to explain my edits but neither of you gave me the chance to do so and decided I needed an immediate block. I need more than just one hour to respond; I wasn't online at the time, and blocking doesn't solve anything if I'm not actively editing and ignoring your inquiry. Shearonink said at AIV, "I skimmed their past edits and they didn't always do this, sometimes in the past they did move outdated article talk page posts to Archives." -- you seem to believe that I'm just blanking talk pages en masse regardless of who created the sections or what purpose they serve? The only sections I've removed are posts made by InternetArchiveBot, and I'm not removing all of them. Both of you also seem to be assuming that WP:ARCHIVENOTDELETE is a policy that must be followed almost without exception, while I don't believe that I am violating ARCHIVENOTDELETE. Removing the InternetArchiveBot talk page sections is also not the only change to talk pages that I'm making. I am trying to find some links for a longer explanation. Nythar (💬-🍀) 18:16, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Fixing ping to @Shearonink:. Nythar (💬-🍀) 18:16, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
I made clear in my report that I wasn't looking for a block, just a rollback. And ARCHIVENOTDELETE is very clear on this: "Apart from the exception described in WP:OWNTALK, discussions should be archived, not blanked." OWNTALK meaning your own user talk page (this page). Seems completely cut-and-dry to me. Apologies for rushing; I figured you weren't online to respond, but the rollback was necessary either way so I figured I was fine preempting you. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 18:44, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
@QuietHere: Apologies, it took me a moment to find the link I was looking for; I need to make a list of these. WP:ARCHIVENOTDELETE is a "behavioral guideline" and not a policy that must be strictly followed (unlike WP:BLP and WP:CIVIL, see the banners at the top of those pages describing them as "English Wikipedia policy"). It is my understanding that this is how guidelines and policies work (generally), of course there needs to be a good reason for a guideline exception to exist.
In this discussion from 2018 pertaining to the InternetArchiveBot sections after they were discontinued (they used to be added to article talk pages in the past whenever the bot added archives to articles, this is not done any longer), consensus was found to be in favor of Option 2, which stated "the wording of the post is modified to give users permission to delete posts if they want to. Since talk page posts normally can't be deleted by other users, it would remove that restriction." Consensus was found to be against Option 1, which stated "a bot edits the 1 million pages deleting posts. Archived talk pages will be left alone." So an exception to ARCHIVENOTDELETE does exist for the removal of InternetArchiveBot sections by individual users from article talk pages. Nythar (💬-🍀) 19:10, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Okay, well that clears that up then. I was not aware of this matter, and while I don't particularly see the point of mass removal of this seemingly harmless text, it doesn't seem you were in the wrong after all (though, if I'm reading correctly, there is significant concern about watchlist flooding which would likely be an issue given your targeted approach, so an adjustment in that regard would help). Thank you, and apologies again. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 21:02, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Well we can both be trouted but the exception for InternetArchiveBot needs to be spelled out for dumdums like me at ARCHIVENOTDELETE to keep other editors from jumping the gun so to speak. I mean, both QuietHere and myself are fairly-experienced editors and we both did not know about this exception. Once the exception is added to the guideline, a link to it in the edit summary would be extremely helpful in the future. - Shearonink (talk) 21:34, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you both for understanding. @QuietHere: since we've cleared this up I'm going to proceed to revert the approximately 200 reverts you conducted.
My “clean up” edits aren’t just for removing the IABot messages. I insert “==Untitled==” to untitled sections where necessary (which are common in older article talk pages). Excess blank lines are also common in older talk pages, and I make sure to take care of them as well. Sometimes I remove talk page headers from articles that don’t need them per Template:Talk header#Should this be added to every talk page?. That's why I think of my edits as general clean ups.
@Shearonink: At least temporarily, how do you think I should inform unsuspecting users that my edits are legitimate and not a violation of ARCHIVENOTDELETE? I've only received like two inquiries in the past so it isn't exactly too big a deal but I'd like to avoid this kind of thing in the future. I'm thinking of creating a subpage in my user space and describing the issue there, and then linking to that in my edit summary. The edit summary could look something like "[[link to subpage]] + general clean up". Thoughts? Nythar (💬-🍀) 23:19, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
That fine by me. I am hopeful that the guideline can be updated to reflect best practices re: blanking the External links bot. Shearonink (talk) 03:08, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for helping fix my edit on WP:ANI. I thought I hit "Reply" so it should have worked out correctly, but it didn't. I'll play around in the sandbox to see how replys work with bullet points. Closhund/talk/ 06:02, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

No problem. I'm actually not sure if there's a way to add bullet points to replies without directly editing a page's source code but it's easier to read a discussion that way. Nythar (💬-🍀) 06:05, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi Nythar,

This is to let you know that File:CRS-20 Dragon–Enhanced.jpg, a featured picture you uploaded, has been selected as the English Wikipedia's picture of the day (POTD) for March 7, 2025. A preview of the POTD is displayed below and can be edited at Template:POTD/2025-03-07. If you have any concerns, please place a message at Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day. Thank you! SpaceX CRS-20

SpaceX CRS-20, also known as SpX-20, was a Commercial Resupply Services mission to the International Space Station launched on March 7 2020 and was the final flight of Dragon 1. The mission was contracted by NASA and was flown by SpaceX. The CRS-20 was the final flight before the first use of Dragon 2 and was the end of the phase 1 missions. CRS-20 used Dragon capsule C112, which previously flew to the ISS on CRS-10 and CRS-16 and was launched aboard Falcon 9 from the Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex 40. CRS-20 arrived at the ISS on March 9 2020 and was captured by the station's robotic arm, the last capture of the Dragon spacecraft. The CRS-20 mission carried 1977 kg (4358 lbs) of cargo to the ISS.

R Mon RE(M) - Brig Ridge / Militia Flash

Ref your edit comments. "Facebook not a reliable source", I would expect that the British Army page should be considered a reliable source. More importantly the page depicts the headline picture of Brig Ridge as Comd 8 Engr Brigade in uniform AND wearing the green Militia Flash that editor "DORMSKIRK" queried a reference / prrof of.

I'm not a wikipedia expert, but believe that the photographic published prrof is important. Militiaman 1539 (talk) 10:35, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

@Militiaman 1539: The issue isn't just that Facebook is not a reliable source; the Facebook post itself doesn't appear to mention the small green rectangle at all. I believe it is considered WP:Original research to use information obtained by simply looking at and examining images, as opposed to a written report or analysis of some sort. Nythar (💬-🍀) 10:42, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
Nythar,
The flash is clearly visible on the uniform in the picture. It can also be seen here:
https://www.timeslocalnews.co.uk/local-news/tunbridge-wells-soldier-praises-troops-in-caribbean-relief-effort/
If this were just fancy dress or sports attire I'd get it. This is an Army officer, on duty, in public, in uniform. We don't just get to pick what we fancy slapping on our arms.
You can see my intent, and i'm happy to admit i'm a novice at editing this stuff - how do we achieve the aim?
MM Militiaman 1539 (talk) 10:53, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
I'm not saying that you're wrong; your assumption is probably correct. But at Wikipedia, since no reliable source explicitly stated that the green patch on his shoulder is indeed a Militia Flash, it shouldn't be added to the article. Although I'm not sure if this example is necessary to include in the article? If you want to add it you'll need, like I said, a source stating, in writing, that the patch is a Militia Flash. Nythar (💬-🍀) 11:07, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
Nythar,
I've served in the Regiment, I've served with John Ridge. I know I'm not wrong :-)
The flashes are also for sale on the Regimental website (RMONREM.COM)
https://rmonrem.com/theshop/uniform/ (search flor flash). 3x types are available and vary slightly on wether they are being worn with Combats, Service Dress or Mess Dress.

Question from LIPSET231 (15:01, 12 October 2024)

Good afternoon. I am pleased to have joined Wiki. However, I have come across information on various forums suggesting that some senior editors have engaged in bullying behavior. I am keen to ensure the safety of the Wiki platform. Additionally, I seek clarification on what constitutes a good edit and how to challenge or remove an edit if the information submitted on a page is inaccurate or poorly sourced. --LIPSET231 (talk) 15:01, 12 October 2024 (UTC)

@LIPSET231: Here's a list of guidelines that provide information on how editors are expected to behave. When it comes to "what constitutes a good edit": any edit that improves Wikipedia in some way will generally be considered a good edit. If you come across inaccurate or otherwise problematic content, you can remove that content, but please make sure to specify why you're removing the content in your edit summary. If the content you remove is re-added, the article's talk page is the place to go to discuss the issue with whoever re-added the content. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 15:25, 12 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from XMJummy on Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave (01:21, 15 October 2024)

I attempted to make a small edit near the bottom of the page, under the Design/History tab. After making the changes, I seem to have messed up the formatting. In the preview though, it displays it normally. --XMJummy (talk) 01:21, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

@XMJummy: Could you please specify what you mean exactly by "formatting"? It looks fine to me; you just need to clean up some random text you accidentally added. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 01:33, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
I figured it out, it seems I accidentally switched the tab I was trying to to fix, and ended up adding text in the wrong spot. It should hopefully be fine now. XMJummy (talk) 01:35, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Seren19 (04:49, 15 October 2024)

hello, how do I create a page on wikipedia? --Seren19 (talk) 04:49, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

@Seren19: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. To create an article, first you should create a draft through Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Villages category

Hello, just wondering why you just went through and mass removed a large number of articles from the "villages in" category? - Adolphus79 (talk) 12:42, 19 October 2024 (UTC)

Nevermind, I noticed they were already in the subcats per county right after this, thought it might have been an automated script/bot mistake. - Adolphus79 (talk) 12:44, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
Yes, that was the issue. Just cleaning up some overcategorization. Nythar (💬-🍀) 12:49, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
Maybe I am overthinking this particular cleanup, but what if somebody wants to read or research villages in Ohio, or any state in the US, but doesn't want to find a list of the 88 counties in Ohio and then go to 88 separate county pages first? The purpose of WP:Cat is "readers can browse and quickly find sets of pages on topics that are defined by those characteristics." I don't think adding a village to "Villages in (state)" is overcategorization. These pages aren't overcategorized already. There are 50 states, a federal district, five major territories, and various minor islands in the US. There are 3,244 counties and county equivalents in the United States. That's a lot of county pages to go to if someone is reading about villages in the US, verses just over 50 pages. I'll grant you, using 50 category pages as a start is fair but sorting through 3,244 county pages first seems counter-intuitive of WP:Cat purpose. Was there a category discussion opened before this was undertaken? I am curious to read it, if so, to find the reasoning. Thanks. P37307 (talk) 13:42, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
If somebody would want to research villages in Ohio, then they'd be able to access the List of municipalities in Ohio article, which has a table that is sortable by classification and population (since municipalities in Ohio that have under 5,000 residents are automatically labeled as villages). That was my initial concern, too, when I saw the categorization changes (plus I was peeved by waking up to hundreds of notification emails), but hopefully the existence of that article should help readers. Alith Anar 15:18, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
Since villages are listed under municipalities for the entire state, that makes sense and was an overcategorization, esp since there aren't that many villages in the US, esp in Ohio, anymore that are official villages. Thanks for your consideration of that before you mass edited the pages and for your thoughtful response. Happy editing. P37307 (talk) 16:08, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
@P37307: If somebody wants to view a list of all Ohio village articles in a neat format, List of municipalities in Ohio, as Alith Anar pointed out, would be the best place to go, at least in my opinion. In general, it seems to be preferred (for town and village articles) that if an article fits neatly into a subcategory, it isn't included in the parent category. See for example Category:Rural localities in Russia (rural localities are equivalent to villages, I believe); this category contains no rural locality articles itself, but instead splits up Russia's rural localities into subcategories by Oblast and Republic. And for the subcategories that have sub-subcategories splitting up the "by Oblast" cats into "by District" cats (e.g., Category:Rural localities in Tver Oblast), the rural localities are again included only in the lowest level categories.
If the issue with the 88 subcategories is that somebody might want to copy or view a full list of Ohio village articles, they could do so using the municipalities article pointed out above, but I doubt that the current system of categorization is going to impede anyone's research. The "by county" categories are organized and possibly more intuitive if you've got a map of Ohio. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 22:19, 19 October 2024 (UTC)

Hii I am Shrikrity I want to ask you Why my Recently uploaded page is not show in Google search Please tell me . Thank you --Shrikrity Mishra (talk) 08:24, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

I believe you're referring to your userpage? I don't think userpages are indexed (see Wikipedia:Controlling search engine indexing), so it won't appear on Google searches. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 08:31, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

Ukraine Foreign Minister Edit

I did as you suggested and I found the original source saying he would be at the convention for multiple days, and I believe it just started yesterday. https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2024/10/21/7480654/ CaptainAhab1841 (talk) 21:13, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

@CaptainAhab1841: "Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha was reportedly present during the attack and his condition remains unknown." Does any source explicitly state that he was involved in the attack at all? Him being at a convention somewhere in Istanbul or Ankara doesn't mean he was "present during the attack" or that his "condition is unknown." This is original research and shouldn't be added unless a reliable source explicitly states that this is the case. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 21:17, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
It was this specific convention. CaptainAhab1841 (talk) 21:18, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
Maybe he was at a hotel when the attack took place, or dining at a restaurant. Again, you need a reliable source explicitly stating that he was involved in the attack. Nythar (💬-🍀) 21:19, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Zabica99 (11:44, 23 October 2024)

HI Nythar, I'm looking to create an entry for a local IT company, I've already created a brief entry. I'd like to ask for your opinion and advice as a senior editor, could you help me brush up on the objectivity within the sandbox, suggest what I should remove or potentially add?

I've searched up other companies and have taken inspiration from another company (COMBIS > https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Combis) in my writing stile, I hope that's okay?

I've also incorporated a company infobox, but I'd like to add a reference to the key people section, it seems kind of wonky when I try to do it with Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).</nowiki> tags. Let me know if you have other questions. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 03:03, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

thank very much i dont wanna. Lie i was lost❤️😕 Samppy (talk) 03:10, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Samppy (08:42, 25 November 2024)

Hello if l edit wrong what will happen ,will it be corrected🥹 --Samppy (talk) 08:42, 25 November 2024 (UTC)

@Samppy: Someone might happen to find your edit randomly or because they have the article you edited on their watchlist, a system that lets users see new edits made to articles they've starred. In general, though, they might not see your edit to correct it. You can ask me here at my talk page if you want me to review an edit; I'd be more than happy to help. Question from Samppy on User talk:Samppy (11:48, 26 November 2024)

Hello plz help me in Search for contribution snd l dont understand tag for filter 😕🤔 --Samppy (talk) 11:48, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

@Samppy, I'm not sure I understand; are you referring to the tags next to the edits you make? Or to the "filter log" that appears at the top of a user's contributions page? (see the links) —Nythar (💬-🍀) 12:28, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
Sorry l mean filter log that appears at the top of a user 's contribution page🥹 Samppy (talk) 14:10, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
plz explain some of the filter logs if you can🥺 Samppy (talk) 14:15, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
That is just a list of every time an edit has tripped an edit filter. We have certain filters in place that look for bad words, etc. and will tag, automatically revert, or outright stop the edit from being made. If your's is empty, that's a good thing. - Adolphus79 (talk) 15:47, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
