AfC notification: Draft:Bill Cobbs has a new comment
[edit]March 2018
[edit]Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We welcome and appreciate your contributions, but it appears you have written or added to an article about yourself, at Draft:Bill Cobbs. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Wikipedians with articles). If you wish to add to an existing article about yourself, please propose the changes on its talk page. Please understand that this is an encyclopedia and not a personal web space or social networking site. If your article has already been deleted, please see: Why was my page deleted?, and if you feel the deletion was an error, please discuss it with the deleting administrator. Thank you. Theroadislong (talk) 15:35, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
Your username
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Bill C. Cobbs", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because usernames which imply you a specific notable person (such as Draft:Bill Cobbs) should only be used if that is your real name as explained in WP:REALNAME. In some cases, verification of your identity may be requested to prevent against any damaging impersonation. If you are not Bill C. Cobbs, you should change your username to something else or your account may be indefinitely blocked from further editing. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing this form, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:41, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Welcome!
[edit]Hello, Bill C. Cobbs, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.
I noticed that one of the first articles you edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.
To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.
One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)
In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms our use and policy on paid editing.
Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- The plain and simple conflict of interest guide
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- Contributing to Wikipedia
- Tutorial
- How to edit a page and How to develop articles
- How to create your first article (using the Article Wizard if you wish)

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}}
before the question. Again, welcome! -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:43, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- I've added the above template based upon your choice of username. Although Wikipedia does not explicitly prohibit conflict-of-interest editing, it does highly discourage it because it can and often does lead to some serious problems. Technically, you are only working on a draft, so for the time being conitnuing to do so should be OK. You should, however, carefully read the pages linked to in the above template because they contain important information which you should be aware of and which may help you avoid problems. Some other pages you should look are Wikipedia:Ownership of content and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. If you have any questions about any of this, feel free to ask them below or you can ask for help at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:48, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
April 2018
[edit]If you are the person represented by this username, please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. You may choose to edit under a new username (see information below), but keep in mind that you are welcome to continue to edit under this username. If you choose to do so, we ask the following:
- Please be willing and able to prove your identity to Wikipedia.
- Please send an email to info-enwikimedia.org. Be aware that the volunteer response team that handles email is indeed operated entirely by volunteers, and the reply may not be immediate.
If you are not the person represented by this username, you are welcome to choose a new username (see below).
A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.
You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
- Adding
{{unblock-un|your new username here}}
below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page. - At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
- Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
- Adding
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
below this notice, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. kelapstick(bainuu) 21:57, 6 April 2018 (UTC)Unblock Please

- Kelapstick, I've renamed per the request above, but pinging you as they also appear to have a COI and have been doing some promotional work for Mr. Cobbs (see Draft:Bill Cobbs). Not commenting either way on the unblock, but prefer alerting the blocking admin to let them decide when there might be issues beyond the name. TonyBallioni (talk) 05:33, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
- TonyBallioni, thanks. I am unblocking the account, since all the work is in draft space, it's all "according to process", although NativeSonofMichigan, you should put a notice on your talk page regarding your Conflict of Interest, and please read the associated WP:COI policy. Cheers, --kelapstick(bainuu) 20:30, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
- Kelapstick, makes sense. Just wanted to ping first. I went ahead and unblocked per your message above (the account was still blocked when I saw the ping.) TonyBallioni (talk) 20:46, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

Shared accounts
[edit]Hj NativeSonofMichigan. Just curious about something you posted on the user talk page of Theroadislong. You posted here that The limited references we have because of lack of digital articles during certain sections of Mr. Cobbs life
. You used the word "we" which might give others the impression that more than one person may be using your account to edit. If that's the case, please carefully read WP:NOSHARING because the general principle on Wikipedia is "one person per account". If others are "sharing" your account so to speak, then please advise them to register for their own accounts. Also, if they are also connected to Bill Cobbs in anyway, then they should also carefully read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:14, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
