Auto-unprotecting by MusikBot II

Hey Musik. I made a change that caused two templates to be brought down from 100k transclusions to <200 each—a massive decrease. MusikBot II didn't protect those pages, but I had the thought that it could unprotect those pages when their usages decreased. Do you think that it would be a good idea? SWinxy (talk) 00:37, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Definitely! That was the original plan. The community consultation however raised concerns about possible wheel-warring among other things, so I decided against that functionality for the first iteration. It's been several years now with little to no complaints with this bot, so maybe I'll propose auto-unprotection. This would be especially useful for template sandboxes. They often get placed in some other highly-transcluded template while testing, so the bot correctly protects it, but then when the test is over we're left with a needlessly protected sandbox (which are supposed to be open to editing).
I'll add this to my admittedly very long list of volunteer to-dos. Thanks for the reminder :) MusikAnimal talk 03:00, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
Surely you could prevent the wheel-warring by going, if latest edit protection log user is MusikBot or none, then unprotect. Zippybonzo | Talk (he|him) 03:31, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
Those rules would exclude the two templates, since they were protected prior to MusikBot II. The current exclusion system would work imo. SWinxy (talk) 05:14, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

A very minor problem with MusikBot II

I am not sure anything needs to be done, but wanted to let you know there is a very minor problem with MusikBot II. Someone has been vandalizing AFDs in part adding Template:pp-sock. Then MusikBot II will step in and remove the template, but not the rest of the vandalism, meaning that one click reverts to fight vandalism are hard to perform. Reverting to the older version is still fine so it's not too bad. Here is an example change history that might be illustrative [1]siroχo 19:06, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Yes, this has been brought up many times. First, it should be made clear the vandal is aware of the bot (obviously), that I operate it, and may be reading this discussion. For this reason I won't go into any details. I've worked with a few admins and patrollers over email on this matter and am happy to discuss further off-wiki. Also, note you can use WP:POPUPS to revert to any revision with just one click from the revision history. MusikAnimal talk 20:21, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

+IA at perm helper

Went to deal with the newest Int Admin and the script that I love for this task doesn't appear to have IA as an option when listed at BN. Any chance we could get a snazzy upgrade? Please and thank you! Primefac (talk) 20:43, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

Makes sense! A lot of the code is hardwired around the requests living in the WP:PERM ecosystem, but I've long wanted to make it work anywhere and everywhere. I won't be able to work on it in the near future but I've added it to my to-dos :) Thanks for the suggestion, MusikAnimal talk 17:06, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
Oh! I saw the perm links at the end of the line and thought they were from the script (since they came after the (assign permissions) link) but it looks like they're actually at the end of {{rfplinks}}. At the very least I'll be able to update that and get a link to +IA more easily, so no rush on the script :-) Primefac (talk) 19:59, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. New pages patrol newsletter

Hello MusikAnimal,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Reminders:

MusikBot protections

Hi MusikAnimal! I noticed that {{Navbox documentation}} hasn't been template-protected, despite reaching >5000 transclusions a month or so ago. Is the bot that protects high-risk templates operating properly? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 15:04, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

@Sdkb It doesn't do any re-protections, or removal of protection for that matter. I have a mental note to propose this expansion of functionality, as suggested here ~2 months ago, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Lowering/removing protection is one thing, but I do worry about the bot elevating protection when an admin deliberately kept it lower. Ideally we'd have a way to respect that without requiring admins add to the bot's exclusion list every time. Maybe it could scan the last year's worth of edits to the template to see if any editors would get shut out after elevating protection, or something like that. MusikAnimal talk 21:56, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
I'm ambivalent about what the best workaround is for templates deliberately kept at a lower protection level, but this does seem like a hole that we should ideally try to find a way to plug. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 22:03, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

Adding an incorrect protection template will cause the page to be placed in Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates, so if the bot doesn't remove the invalid template, a human will soon enough. You can't fully protect your user page anyway as you're not an admin (because if it were fully protected, you wouldn't be able to edit it!). But, if you'd like your user page to be semi-protected, you can request this at WP:RFPP. MusikAnimal talk 23:20, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello! I've been following MusikBot for a bit on the WP:AFI pages in order to tidy things up, and I wanted to alert you (because it just happened, but has happened multiple times before in the last few years) about the fact that MusikBot periodically seems to be dropping updates for the Wikipedia:Articles for improvement/Articles/List as well as at the accomplishments page, although this appears to be less frequent (at Wikipedia:Articles for improvement/Accomplishments). In regards to the list, because there is a new article picked every week, I would think that there would be one removal per week. I first noticed that the updates expected on 3 April 2023 were missing, but then it happened again on 2 October and once again today on 16 October. At that point, I started to dig deeper and noticed that there are a good handful of entries on the AFI list which were ran back in 2020, but never taken off, leading to those entries running as the AFI multiple times in a handful of weeks, and staying on the list to this day. I wanted to let you know because I'm not sure whether there was outside information that I was not missing, but this seems to be a possible problem. The automation is a big help regardless, so thank you! Utopes (talk / cont) 01:23, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

scriptManager not working after maintenance edit

Hi @MusikAnimal, the scriptManager doesn't seem to work after this edit by a WMF staff. Could you please revert that edit? (as almost all my scripts are toggled through scriptManager) I have also imported the older version that works, so reverting it should fix the script. ~~2NumForIce (speak|edits) 17:31, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Removing # should do it, although why Jon (WMF) replaced #... with [id="..."] instead of just escaping scriptName eludes me. Nardog (talk) 09:11, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
@2NumForIce Should be fixed now. Thanks for letting me know! MusikAnimal talk 17:33, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

WP:PERM requests with "Not Yet" denial reason

Hello, I would like to express my gratitude to MusikBot for its assistance at WP:PERM. I have noticed that the bot does not archive requests with the denial reason "Not Yet." Consequently, I have manually archived some of these requests myself, as I observed that they were becoming stale.

I have observed that @HJ Mitchell often uses "Not Yet" as the denial reason, and these requests tend to go stale instead of being archived. This is because the administrator prioritizes fresh requests from the same user after the reason for denying the initial requests is met. "Not yet" is used as {{nd|Not done}} with the same {{nd}} template.

In light of this, I believe it would be advantageous to archive these "Not Yet" requests a day or two later than standard "Not Done" requests. This adjustment would be particularly helpful because "Not Yet" is used as a synonym for "Not Done" on PERM. What are your thoughts on this? -- 𝙳𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚖𝚁𝚒𝚖𝚖𝚎𝚛 𝚍𝚒𝚜𝚌𝚞𝚜𝚜 09:28, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

@DreamRimmer Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I have adjusted the configuration so that {{nd|Not yet}} will archive in the same way {{nd}} does. This was always the intended behaviour, so I don't think there's a need to treat "Not yet" any different than the normal "Not done". Best, MusikAnimal talk 21:26, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! – DreamRimmer (talk) 01:32, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello MusikAnimal:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1400 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Update in regards to AFI nominations with title disambiguations

Hello! I wanted to pop by here again because I think I've identified the central point where MusikBot has been having issues in regards to AFI, and the alert on User talk:MusikAnimal/Archive 46#MusikBot dropping AFI related updates. I was organizing the AFI noms and setting things up for the next few weeks, and my intention was to remove all of the dropped-nominations from the nominations list before the next pick gets chosen. However, in doing so, I started to realize what looked to be a (possible) root cause for the drops in the first place. MusikBot has never removed any titles with parentheses for the last 7 years since 2016, which is when I started tracking the new past-accomplishments for history. Because of this, it's created a handful of statistically-improbable shenanigans seen at Wikipedia:Articles for improvement/Accomplishments, such as Talk:Act (drama) running on three different weeks since 2020, Talk:Organ (anatomy) running for SIX different weeks since 2017, and other pages with disambiguators running several times each such as Talk:The Sims (video game), Talk:Bookworm (insect), and Talk:Letter (alphabet), with all only being recently removed except one being "organ (anatomy)". I was mainly confused how that one escaped, although it turns out that particular case was a one-off removal in 2021 here: Special:Diff/1037847935. Nevertheless, I'm not fully sure exactly how to go about tackling this issue from a technical perspective on the backend, but the manual stuff at the frontend has since been taken care of to my knowledge, as my reason for bringing this up the first time was that Power (social and political) followed by Play (theatre) did not get removed in quick succession. Hopefully there is a feasible way to deal with this bug, as the list-searching-mechanism the bot uses may be ignoring the parentheses in its current state. Hopefully you're also the right person to be bringing this too with this unique situation as well. Thank you again for putting this together in the first place! Utopes (talk / cont) 09:31, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

@Utopes Wow! Thank you so much for identifying this 7-year old bug! I believe I have fixed this. I'll check on the next run to verify. Thanks again! :) MusikAnimal talk 21:04, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
@Utopes Thanks for stepping in on behalf of MusikBot again :) I believe I have actually fixed it now, as evidenced by Special:Diff/1185161703. I am fairly confident all will run as expected next week, but if not, please let me know :) Thanks again, MusikAnimal talk 23:37, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Getting specific topedits data for a user

Hello, could you possibly give me a list of pages in the talk namespace that have been edited by TheCarch *exactly once*, preferably with wikilinks, so I can once and for all deal with some disruption by this user? as far as I can determine the topedits interface gets me very frustratingly close to this goal but not quite, because the user I'm looking at has edited *juuuuust* over 1,000 pages (not counting the dozens I've deleted so far). Or can it let me do this and I've missed something? It's occurred to me that I could temp-delete thirty or forty pages to get the same effect but ... it's too late at night for that here. Thanks very much for any help you can provide! Graham87 (talk) 20:25, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

@Graham87 When browsing to Top Edits for a specific namespace, it should return all unique pages edited. Here is a query with a limit of 5000, thus producing a full list of unique Talk pages edited without having to paginate. You could work from the bottom of the list to find pages edited exactly once. Does this work for you?
Related, there is a request on the XTools Phabricator board to introduce a minimum edit option to Top Edits. In doing this, I could also add a maximum edit option, which I believe would fulfill your use case. MusikAnimal talk 23:13, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, that full list is exactly what I needed! I'll try to remember the limit parameter in the URL if I ever encounter a situation like this again. I've subscribed to the task. Graham87 (talk) 03:18, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@Graham87 Great! Just to be clear, on the default view limited to 1,000 results, there is pagination at the bottom allowing you to view the remaining pages. So you shouldn't need to use the limit parameter (though it's certainly useful to have it all on one page). I can add the pagination at the top as well, if that helps with usability. Or perhaps this is an accessibility issue, and you didn't notice the pagination at all? I just wanted to make sure :) MusikAnimal talk 03:44, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
I noticed the pagination ... but it put the entries at the bottom in a seemingly random order so it wasn't very useful in that particular instance. Graham87 (talk) 04:01, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Got it! The random order tells me it needs to sort by page as well as edit count to have a consistent order. So now I've got two improvements to make thanks to you, hehe! MusikAnimal talk 04:32, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Hehehe re this edit summary: I didn't even notice the use of the word "see", lol. Graham87 (talk) 08:09, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi MusikAnimal. I tried making a change to {{rfp}} and {{rfplinks}} to add a |permission= parameter so that the permission-specific links at subpages of WP:PERM can also show up at WP:PERM#Current requests. Currently, the links change based on the page's name.

However, the extra wikitext confused PermClerk, since it construes {{Rfplinks|1=Username|permission=Rollback}} as having the username Username|permission=Rollback.

Would this be much of a bother to change? I'm not a programmer, but I made an attempt to see how the regex could be changed to allow this.

Line 124:

username = @section.scan(/{{(?:template\:)?rfplinks\|1=(.*?)}}/i).flatten[0]
+
username = @section.scan(/{{(?:template\:)?rfplinks\|1=(.*?)(?:\|[^\}]*)?}}/i).flatten[0]

Line 824:

old_wikitext.scan(/(^\=\=[^\=]*\=\=([^\=]*)(\=\=\=\=[^\=]*\=\=\=\=\n\*.*rfplinks\|1=(.*)\}\}\n))/)
+
old_wikitext.scan(/(^\=\=[^\=]*\=\=([^\=]*)(\=\=\=\=[^\=]*\=\=\=\=\n\*.*rfplinks\|1=(.*?)(?:\|[^\}]*)?\}\}\n))/)

XTools talk page

Hello, MusikAnimal,

I posted a message at Talk:XTools but noticed that no messages had been responded to in a few months. However, you did respond to several messages in the past so I'm just reaching out to see if you could provide more information. XTools has an upper limit of 600,000 edits before it stops breaking down an editor's work and providing them with very useful information. I'll be reaching this maximum in a few weeks and I'm concerned as I look at XTools several times a day to see different information including my latest admin stats and to see my namespace breakdown, pace of editing, number of edits/deleted edits, deleted pages and the like. Can this edit limit be raised? There is another message from an editor from the German Wikipedia with the same query.

I realize that the number of editors who reach this maximum is fairly limited but since there are just probably less than a hundred of us, it probably means that it won't be that taxing for the system. Please let me know if this would be possible and, if not, who I could talk to about this. Thank you very much. Liz Read! Talk! 18:54, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

A request for assistance

Hi MusikAnimal! I hope you're doing well and that life is treating you with kindness and ease. :-) I have a user who is asking on my talk page here if there's a tool or script exists to help with performing exactly what they're seeking to do. If you don't mind, could you review the request and see if such a tool exists? Call me a buffoon, but nothing comes to mind... Feel free to respond directly to the discussion or just let me know here. Either way would be greatly appreciated. :-D Thanks, and cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:50, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, hope you're doing well, too! I'm not aware of a tool to help with this. I tried using VisualEditor with veaction=edit but that was far worse given the heavy use of templates.
Anyway, questions like this are probably better fit for WP:Help desk or WP:VPT. This way you get more input and others can benefit from the answers as they will be more easily searchable. MusikAnimal talk 19:59, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

userRightsManager feature request: edit summary

Hello friend. Low priority, but please consider having edits made to the page Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Reviewers/Newsletter list by userRightsManager add " (using userRightsManager)" to the edit summary. Would make it easier to figure out where those edits are coming from. Example. Thanks! –Novem Linguae (talk) 09:26, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

@Novem Linguae I don't think this is possible with the MassMessageListContent content model, or more specifically, the action=editmassmessagelist. I went to search Phab to see if anyone had requested this, and low and behold, you had this past June, haha! :) phab:T340517
I don't know much about content models other than wikitext, but as the edits to MMS lists are proper revisions, it would seem trivial to add support for a custom summary (at least in the API). MusikAnimal talk 22:00, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure if this is usual behavior, or if the bot should be doing <span style='color:red;> to close its syntax and actually color the change as red? Hi MusikAnimal! If I remember correctly, in order to grant me regular access to {{User WP}} and {{User WP/switch}}, you and Primefac kindly lowered the templates protections. MusikBot has missed last two DYK updates

MusikAnimal, just a heads up that MusikBot didn't update the DYK Nominations page at midnight tonight or the midnight before that. I made the necessary manual edits to move the Current header and add the new date on both occasions. I hope this is an easy fix; I'll keep an eye out in case it happens again over this weekend. Thank you for your help, and for the bot's regular updating of the page. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:08, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

So, I've confirmed this is an issue with Toolforge, see phab:T338006. The problem is that we're competing with a ton of other jobs that also run at 00:00 UTC, and the whole system basically breaks down. Fortunately there is a solution for small jobs like this that need to run at 00:00 UTC, but I don't know when that will be worked on. For now, I've increased the re-try rate – though, my understanding is that things are breaking before a retry is even attempted. Anyway, thanks for keeping an eye on it, and reporting the issues! I'm just relieved it isn't my code =P Regards, MusikAnimal talk 08:41, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

Hello MusikAnimal. I had a question in November that is now archived at User talk:MusikAnimal/Archive 46#Rfplinks and PermClerk. Do you have any response to that? SilverLocust 💬 03:22, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Sorry for missing your original message! Especially given you even provided the code, I will most certainly implement it :) However it may have to wait a bit as I'm about to go on holiday. I plan to make this regex string configurable at User:MusikBot/PermClerk/config, as the template could be changed again, and I don't think the community should have to go through me every time that happens. I've got this on my to-do list so I won't forget about it. I'll ping you when the change is live, hopefully in the coming week, but if not after I return from holiday in mid-February. MusikBot has missed last two DYK updates

MusikAnimal, just a heads up that MusikBot didn't update the DYK Nominations page at midnight tonight or the midnight before that. I made the necessary manual edits to move the Current header and add the new date on both occasions.

I suppose this is a follow-on to the last time I posted a similar message here, on 20 January. Since then, MusikBot missed 22 January, 25 January, 31 January, and 2 February, in addition to yesterday and today. (I missed 22 January as well, so the header was missing for four or five days until I finally noticed the absence.) In addition to the midnight run, perhaps you could have a secondary job at a later time, perhaps 01:30, to see whether the update was made, and try again when things aren't so busy? Or even schedule the original job for 00:03 or 00:05? I don't know what's involved, but I'm not always around to check up on the page right after midnight. Thank you very much for the bot, and I hope that the Toolforge issue you mentioned last month is dealt with soon, or you can find a workaround for it. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:17, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

MusikBot has missed three of the last five DYK updates

MusikAnimal, while it hasn't been consecutive days, MusikBot missed making the DYK nominations page updates at midnight on March 1, 3, and 5, but updated on the even-numbered March days, and the last four days in February. I'm not sure what it means, but you wanted to be notified if something seemed unusual. Thanks.

Oh wait, you wanted a haiku:

Did You Know that on
odd March days, MusikBot skips
nominations page?

True for the month to date, at any rate. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:30, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

@BlueMoonset Hehe, love the haiku :) I've finally coded in some retry logic. If the job doesn't run at 00:00, it will try again at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 minutes past the hour. That hopefully should take care of this problem once and for all. I should note, however, that a Toolforge job might be "queued" at say, 00:10, but won't actually run until some time later. So I would give it until maybe 00:20 before we conclude it didn't run and/or broke somehow. I'll be monitoring the logs for tonight's run, which is in about 15 minutes!
Thanks for keeping me updated, and apologies for all the missed runs. MusikAnimal talk 23:45, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
Okay, it seems to work! It ran fine on the first try, but I observed it run again at each specified interval. As expected, it detected that it had already ran successfully and short-circuited. So hopefully if I hear from you again, it's not about this :) Cheers! MusikAnimal talk 00:04, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello MusikAnimal,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello MusikAnimal,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello MusikAnimal,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

As far as I know User:MusikBot II/TemplateProtector doesn't reduce protection of templates. Could you please reduce protection of:

?

These sandbox pages got protected by the bot due to a bug in Template:WikiProject Christianity, which was fixed. —andrybak (talk) 19:42, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

User:MSGJ removed protection from three out of four sandbox pages (Special:Diff/1218797849, Special:Diff/1218797897, and Special:Diff/1218799469). Only Module:Pagetype/sandbox remains protected. —andrybak (talk) 22:59, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

Missing Article for improvement

It's missing this week

There isn't an AFI

Did MusikBot glitch?

(Thanks, BentSm (talk) 20:07, 12 April 2024 (UTC))

Seems like it. I'll look into it when I get a chance. Fortunately it seems like a one-off as the bot ran successfully this past Sunday. MusikAnimal talk 17:21, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Yoda protection

Hello, I was wondering if you might be able to remove protection for the Yoda page. It's been seven years since it was put on indefinite protection. Wafflewombat (talk) 01:07, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

Samsara was the protecting admin. I see they are now inactive, so you can ask at WP:RFUP. My thoughts are that this subject is likely prone to more disruption given its prominence in pop culture, and should probably stay protected, but I'd rather someone else make the call.
