Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! Possible bug in RefToolbar preventing autofills from working

Hello, I have found what I think might be a bug in RefToolbar's code that prevents the autofill button from working unless there is at least one incremental field present in the form. Please see my description of the problem at Wikipedia_talk:RefToolbar#Autofill_not_initiating_in_absence_of_incrementables. Thank you --Blahma (talk) 12:07, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

User:Mr.Z-bot's working and other doubts

Hi! I understand that User:Mr.Z-bot compiles and updates various "popular pages" stats (eg. Wikipedia:WikiProject Retailing/Popular pages). Am not getting from where does the bot compile this information? Further I wanted to know how the page view states even works? Like does it count only external non-logged in readers or can editors also influence the page view count? Means for example if an article is under dispute for some reason it would automatically catch more editors and would this also increase the "popularity" ranking of that page?
I don't even know if you are right person to ask these things. If you are not, please direct me to someone else you think might answer. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {Talk / Edits} 12:00, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

the Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Popular pages page

Thank you for maintaining the Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Popular pages page, but then could you also add a fields Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Wikipedia 1.0/Fields collumn to the page. (also sortable so that can every now and then I can have a look at the most popular pages in a particular field of mathematics.

PS this is just a private opinion, there has not been a discussion in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics that agrees or disagrees with my standpoint. so possibly later you will get a request to remove the field collumn again. If you prefer that we first discuss it, please let me know. but then is it possible how i would like it? WillemienH (talk) 18:10, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

Future of Mr.Z-bot tasks

Hey Alex, it looks like you might have retired from Wikipedia. I was just wondering if you could chat about the tasks currently performed by Mr.Z-bot and whether or not you would be interested in handing those off to other maintainers, or just adding extra maintainers so that other people can help keep them up to date and add new features to them (like adding mobile stats to the popular page reports and Citoid support to the RefToolbar API). Let me know if you have any thoughts about this. Cheers! Ryan Kaldari (WMF) (talk) 00:06, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Not quite retired, just on an extended break. But some additional help with bots/tools would certainly be appreciated. Mr.Z-man 01:32, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Glad to hear you haven't retired! The Community Tech team is interested in possibly improving a couple of your tools (see T112569 and T114156). If we decided to pursue making these improvements, would you prefer that we fork your Github repos and make pull requests or would you rather add other people as contributors to the repos so that they could work on the code directly? Also, would you be interested in adding other people as co-maintainers for your Tool Labs projects? Ryan Kaldari (WMF) (talk) 21:58, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Excellent :-) Would be exceedingly nice to have mobile without the numbers your tool produces. And for it to function in other languages. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 23:51, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Adding people as contributors and co-maintaners would probably be easiest. Mr.Z-man 22:16, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
That's fine by me. If you'd like to go ahead and add me to any projects, my username on both GitHub and Tool Labs is Kaldari. You can add project maintainers on Tool Labs from http://tools.wmflabs.org/ and can add contributors on GitHub via [1]. We can involve you as much or as little as you would like in discussing feature changes and bug fixes. Ideally, we would like to make your life easier and the tools better :) Ryan Kaldari (WMF) (talk) 01:05, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Okay, I've added you to the reftoolbar and popularpages projects on Tool Labs and Github, as well as the commonphp Github, which generates the HTML template for the web tools. Mr.Z-man 03:25, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Electronic Recycling Association AfD

Hi Mr.Z-man. There's something wrong with (the browser rendering) of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Electronic Recycling Association. It is blank in two different browsers, but it works as a preview when editing it. I had a quick look to debug it, the rendering broke with the close edit [2] but further work would involve editing a closed AfD (possibly multiple times) hence me asking you if it's a quick fix for you? (If it helps, the top looks ok, comparing with another AfD there's no {{ns:0|O}} in the middle, so it's likely the bottom) If you need any help, ping me and I'll copy to sandbox and debug it. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Relisted AfD debates

Hi Alex, hope you're doing well. Sorry to bug you about more script things. Could you modify User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD2.js to remove Category:Relisted AfD debates and Category:AfD debates relisted 3 or more times on closure? Discussion is here and here. There will usually be wrapped in <noinclude>. I don't expect it to be too difficult – I can look into it if you prefer and suggest a diff (don't feel too comfortable making a substantial edit to the script directly). — Earwig talk 07:34, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Could your popular pages program be set up to run for the entire Haitian Creole Wikipedia? We're trying to revive it, and knowing which pages were read might be helpful. There are only 52K articles on the entire Wikipedia, and most of them have one or two sentences. I suspect that it would be enough to make a list of the 100 (rather than 1000) most popular pages. Hey Alex, I added a new URL lookup feature to RefToolbar. Now you can do an autofill with a URL in any of the template interfaces. It uses the Citoid API, which in turn uses Zotero. Feel free to tweak it further if you notice any issues. Kaldari (talk) 19:42, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I just closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Station not stream outside Canada/US as delete using your script, only to find that it had ignored everything before the second forwardslash ("/") in the page name and so deleted US and all other redirects to United States (it probably would have deleted that page as well if I had Steward rights to delete a page with so many edits). It's rare for a page name to have a forwardslash, but it does happen, and it created a big mess to clean up in this case. Thanks for taking a look at it. postdlf (talk) 14:30, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi Mr.Z-man, I was wondering if it would be possible to do a one-time run of this for WikiProject Wales, a.s.a.p.? - They're having an editathon through April, and Dr. Blofeld requested the list at VPT, but I see that the service usually runs mid-month and is probably manually triggered, so I thought it worth a request. Mr. Z-bot -- unnecessary reports to WP:AIV

At Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism/TB2, there are currently three reports, two of which appear unnecessary -- for KatieEmoto (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) and 63.92.248.233 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log). Glitch when relisting with closeAFD2.js

Hi Alex. On occasion closeAFD2.js will skip hiding the AFD transclusion in the old log, ex.:

Thanks for the script. — Sam Sailor 08:19, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

The AFD was transcluded in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2016 August 29 as {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Deep_Stealth_Productions (2nd nomination)}}. Could the underscores be the culprit? — Sam Sailor 08:25, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Trim whitespace?

As somebody who closes a lot of AfDs, this is a really wonderful tool. Thanks for making it available! One suggestion, though. You should trim trailing whitespace from the closing comment. If I enter an extra newline at the end of my comment, when the signature is appended, it ends up going on a line by itself, resulting in it being set off as a code block, as in Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/User:RoySmith/test_page_1. I do that surprisingly often. Trimming trailing whitespace would fix that. -- RoySmith (talk) 16:11, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Mr.Z-man. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Mr.Z-man.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts.
