Wikipedia's voice

[edit]

Whether to use quotes or not, who says what, how and to whom to attribute something, etc.

  • WP:WikiVoice in WP:NPOV: '...opinions should not be stated in Wikipedia's voice. Rather, they should be attributed in the text to particular sources, or where justified, described as widespread views, etc. For example, an article should not state that "genocide is an evil action", but it may state that "genocide has been described by John X as the epitome of human evil." '
  • WP:Verifiability, not truth (WP:TRUTH, WP:NOTTRUTH) - essay: " It is the task of the Wikipedia editor to present opinions as opinions, not as facts stated in Wikipedia's voice; this is one reason Wikipedia's voice should be neutral."

Vandalism

[edit]

Disruption

[edit]
dd.dd.dd.ddd (talk · contribs) makes lots of good edits, possibly by an unregistered bot. Shows AGF, but likes to make lots of useless white-space edits on article talk pages, also useless upper-case changes on template names, and non-broken redirect link fixes. Very similar is Other user (talk · contribs), although IP tends to do more Talk pages than them, but otherwise, their interests are similar: American politics, political parties, history, etc. IP geolocates to Naples, and user sports two {{userbox-2}}s about Italy and Italian, en-5, and it-N, which seems accurate.

Talk page tips

[edit]

Move, Merge, delete, redirect, disambig

[edit]

Move procedure

[edit]

Don't make controversial moves:

  • WP:TITLECHANGES (policy): Changing one controversial title to another without a discussion that leads to consensus is strongly discouraged. If an article title has been stable for a long time, and there is no good reason to change it, it should not be changed.
  • WP:RM#CM (procedure): Use this process if there is any reason to believe a move would be contested.
  • WP:BOLDMOVE (procedure): only if no prev discussion, and "unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree".

Procedure:

  1. Create a discussion: add {{subst:requested move|NewName|reason=Detailed reasons. Do not sign this.}} at bottom of TP; reason can be complex and contain searches and Reflist-talk refs.
  2. Do not edit article; a bot will automatically add a move notice.
  3. Add notices to WikiProjects

See also:

Relisting a move:

  • Without using the RMcloser script, relisting is essentially done by appending the {{subst:relisting}} template at the end of the opening section/paragraph, after the OP's signature, in the article's talk page. (from u:robertsky, here.)

Merge procedure and templates

[edit]
  1. Create a discussion:
    • WP:MERGEPROP - propose a merger on the proposed destination page's talk page
    • notify users: {{subst:Mergenote|<source page>|<merger discussion talk page section>}}
    • notify WikiProjects, and consider listing at WP:PMGO.
  2. Tag the relevant pages
  3. Discuss the merger
  4. Close and determine consensus (WP:MERGECLOSE)
  5. Perform the merger (WP:MERGETEXT)

Templates

  • {{Merge}} {{Merge from}} {{Merge to}} ca de es fr it pt
  • {{Mergefrom|src page}} |discuss=Talk:OtherPage#Merge discussion |date=Mon yyyy - mark dest page with proposal
  • {{Mergeto|dest page}} - mark source page with proposal
  • {{subst:mergenote|ARTICLE}}
  • {{merged-from|source page name|date}} - mark merge dest page after merge to link to source
  • {{merged-to|destination page name|date}} - mark merge src page after merge to link to dest

Delete procedures and templates

[edit]
Deletion process cheat sheet (2.0)
  • Afd process: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion - controversial deletes
  • How to, step-by-step: see WP:AFDHOWTO to nominate a single page, ArticleName, for deletion; summary:
    1. Put del tag on article:
      • Insert {{subst:afd1}} at the top of the article. (no params)
      • Include in the edit summary: AfD: Nominated for deletion; see [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ArticleName]].
      • Do not mark the edit as minor. Save page. View and look for "Preloaded debate" link.
    2. Create deletion discussion page: (see WP:AFDHOW)
      • click "Preloaded debate" in the AfD page to create Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ArticleName
      • Add {{subst:afd2 |pg=ArticleName |cat=Category |text=DelReason}} ~~~~
      • Add Edit summary Creating deletion discussion for [[ArticleName]]. and save.
    3. Notify users -
    4. Notify WikiProjects:[c] via Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Compact using same template.
      • go back to deletion log above, and add one {{subst:delsort|Topic|~~~~}} to the nomination, for each WikiProject notified.

Notes

  1. ^ The page creator can be found by examining the page History, and clicking the 'oldest' link at the top of the page.
  2. ^ The main editors of the page can be found by going to the History tab, and clicking Page Statistics at the top of the page; then 'Top editors'.
  3. ^ Which WikiProjects should you notify? The ones listed (usually) at the top of the Talk page of the article.

Catalan

[edit]

When citing Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana, place GEC into the sources section with a {{cite book}} or {{cite encyclopedia}} template including a "ref" param: |ref={{harvid|GEC}}, then use {{sfn}} with the GEC direct link and headword as a standard wiki single-bracketed external link inside the |loc= param of the {{sfn}}, thus (excerpt from Querimonia):

In the absence of an explicit agreement, the convinença became the default disposition[1] and the torneria. [2]

This will link "GEC" to the full citation in the Sources section, and the word itself to the entry at the encyclopedia.

==Sources==

  • Carbonell i de Ballester, Jordi; Carreras i Marti, Joan. Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana (in Catalan). Barcelona: Enciclopèdia Catalana. OCLC 225886002. {{cite book}}: |website= ignored (help)

Full cut/paste example:

{{sfn|GEC|loc=[http://www.enciclopedia.cat/EC-GEC-<Entry-number>.xml <headword>]}} and

References

List-defined references and notes

[edit]

List-defined notes:

How-to

[edit]
=== Notes ===
{{notelist|refs=

{{efn|name="Foo"|Text text text.}}

{{efn|name="Bar"|Text text text.{{sfn|Doe|2010|p=123}}}}

{{efn|name="Baz"|Text text text.{{sfnlink|Jones|1984|p=456}}}}

}}

Using nested references in list-defined notes

[edit]
Copy-paste model for list-defined explanatory notes using nested sfnlink citations, with instructions:

In the running text of the article, add a link to the explanatory note at the bottom, like this:

The meeting took place in 1945 and a good time was had by all.{{efn|name="Refname"}}

In the "Notes" section in the appendixes at the bottom of the article, add this:

{{efn|name="Refname"|1='''Keyword:''' Your explanatory footnote text goes here. {{sfnlink|Last1|Last2|YYYY|p=987)}} }}

Explanation:

  • Refname – the refname in the "Notes" section needs to be identical to the Refname in the article body.
  • |1= – optional, but recommended. If there's nothing squirrely in the Explanatory text, you can drop the |1= at the beginning. If you get a broken efn of some sort, leave it in. It never hurts to keep the |1=, and may avoid problems like the one that started this section.
  • Keyword – the bolded keyword is optional. I like to do this, because I'm someone who will actually sometimes browse a good "Notes" section (I'm the type who will read the dictionary sometimes, too), and the bold keyword is like a dictionary headword, and helps clue me in what I'm reading about. You can drop this if you don't find it helpful.
  • Explanatory text – The running text of your note, however long you want, with optional embedded sfnlinks.
  • Sfnlink – optional. if you want one (or more) of these, you can place them anywhere you would place an {{sfn}} template. Normally, you *would* just place an {{sfn}} here, but a mediawiki bug makes that impossible, so in this context, use {{sfnlink}} instead as a workaround for {{sfn}}. The parameters are designed to be (almost) the same, so just code your {{sfn}} template the way you normally would, and then change sfn to sfnlink and it should work. The |text= param isn't needed, unless you want to display link text that doesn't match the author/year info. A simple usage will generate parens around the year: {{sfnlink|Cotton|1946|pp=403–407}} → 'Cotton (1946) pp. 403–407'. If you want parens around the whole thing, just add them: ({{sfnlink|...}}). You might want to put a leading and trailing space around sfnlinks to keep them from bumping into running text, or each other, but that's up to you.

Interwiki

[edit]

Between projects

[edit]

Between languages

[edit]

And further replaced (2016) by {{illm}}, which has the 1st and 2nd args in reverse order (language, then article) and also allows multiple langs and articles, as *multi already did, thus: {{illm|Joke|fr|Blague|hu|Vicc|de|Witz}} (max: 5).

Looks like this is now being replaced by {{Interlanguage link}}, e.g. {{Interlanguage link|ja|Godzilla and The Tale of Genji|源氏物語}} gives Godzilla and The Tale of Genji [ja]-- stay tuned...

  • usage
    • {{Interlanguage link|no|Sigmund Jakobsen}} # article has same name in both languages
    • {{Interlanguage link|nl|Hooglede town hall|Gemeentehuis van Hooglede}} # different in 2 languages
    • {{Interlanguage link|de|Arno Schmidt (historian)|Arno Schmidt (Historiker)}} # different link text

Link from en to existing fr article which doesn't exist yet on (en) with {{link-interwiki}} :

  • {{link-interwiki|en=Haute Cour de Justice (France)|lang=fr|lang_title=Haute Cour (France)}} yields Haute Cour de Justice (France)(fr)

The other way (link from fr.wikipedia to an article existing only on en) using fr:Modèle:Lien :

  • {{Lien|Ordre Ouissam Alaouite|lang=en|trad=Order of Ouissam Alaouite}} yields Ordre Ouissam Alaouite (en)

Use {{Expand French|topic=geo|date=July 2013}} e.g., for articles in en wiki about Fr towns, or {{Expand French|date=June 2009|Ballade des pendus}} for a box including details of where to expand it from.

Translation and copy attribution

[edit]

Legal requirement (not a Guideline or Policy; note use of word 'requires'):

  • ...copying content from another page within Wikipedia requires supplementary attribution to indicate it.WP:CWW
  • To re-distribute text on Wikipedia in any form, provide credit to the authors either by including a) a hyperlink (where possible) or URL to the page or pages you are re-using, b) [a link to alternate page] , or c) a list of all authors.Wikipedia:Copyrights#Re-use of text
  • If you are copying text within Wikipedia, you must at least put a link to the source page in an edit summary at the destination page. It is encouraged to do the same thing at the source page, and to add notices at the talk pages of both.Wikipedia:Copyrights#Reusing text within Wikipedia
  • Translations of copyrighted text, even from other Wikimedia projects, are derivative works, and attribution must be given to satisfy licensing requirements. Also: use ES attrib in 1st edit, and add {{translated page}} to Talk. —WP:TFOLWP

Article page attribution, add Edit summary to first edit, from WP:TFOLWP and Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate:

  • Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution.

Extensions

[edit]

Extension tags and magic word #tag

[edit]

Extension tags extend normal syntax to add things like <inputbox> or <donation/>, etc. <ref> is built-in, but of the same order.

Extension tags do not support preSave transform (tilde-sig interpretation, substing, pipe trick, et al.), so, for example, |date={{subst:CURRENTMONTH}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}} doesn't work within <ref> tags. However, #tag is a magic word that takes any extension tag (like <ref>) as param 1, tag content as param 2, and converts it into <tagname>content</tagname>, and any subst's (or sigs, or pipes) in content will be interpreted. That is to say, #tag performs the preSave transform (like a parser functions would) but that <ref> and other extension tags do not. Example:

Markup Renders as
Foo.<ref name=Doe-2024>Doe, John. time={{subst:TODAY}}</ref>

Bar.{{#tag:ref|Jones, James. date={{subst:TODAY}}|name=Jones-2024}}<!--'name=' must be last-->

==== Refs ====
{{reflist}}

Foo.[1]

Bar.[2]

Refs
  1. ^ Doe, John. time={{subst:TODAY}}
  2. ^ Jones, James. date=12 November 2024

  • [[File:Wikipedesketch1.png|thumb|upright=0.7|alt=A cartoon centipede ... detailed description.|The Wikipede edits ''[[Myriapoda]]''.]]
  • Cropping and adding text to images: Template:Annotated image, Template:CSS crop
  • Non-caption images: [[File:Massacre d'Oradour-sur-Glane2.jpg|150px|right|Hover for caption]]
{{Annotated image
| image = without 'File:'

  • WP:CITE Citing sources; H:FOOT
  • {{rp}} for same named ref, different page: <ref name=lama90/>{{rp|132}} (rare; use {{sfn}} instead)
  • {{r}} allows both the reference name and page number to be specified. {{r|aardvark|p=56}} expands to <ref name="aardvark"/>{{Rp|56}}.
  • WP:REFGROUP - separate groups of refs, e.g. Refs, Notes, etc

    • pg nbrs shown inline using List-defined references and {{r}}: {{r|elk1972|page1=6}} ... ==Refs=={{reflist|refs=<ref name=elk1972>{{cite ... renders: same as above.
    • fn nbrs inline, 'Auth (yyyy, pg)' in reflist, full cite after: See Shortened footnotes using {{harvtxt}} and {{harvnb}} or using {{sfn}}
    • hybrid, with full cite in ref 1, SRFs in subsequent: ...cups.<ref>{{cite book ... |year=1972a |ref=harv |page=5}}</ref> and tips.{{sfn|Elk|1972a|p=6}} ...{{reflist}} gives: ...cups[1] and tips[2]. ... 1^ Elk (full cite) ... 2^ Elk 1972a p6".
    • parenthetical (Harvard) short ref, pgnbr inline (no fn nbrs at all) using {{harv}}, {{refbegin}}, {{refend}}: ...cups{{harv|Elk|1972b|p=5}} and tips. {{harv|Elk|1972b|p=6}}. ...{{refbegin}} *{{cite ... |year=1972b |ref=harv}} {{refend}} gives: cups (Elk 1972b, p. 5) and tips.   • {{sfn}}
    • Some information.{{sfn|Smith|2011}}
    • "A quote in a secondary source."{{sfn|Smith|2011|p=2|ps=, quoted in {{harvtxt|Jones|2010|p=343}} }}
    • Some information.<ref>{{harvnb|Smith|2011}}: "A quote verifying the information."</ref>
    • Add url for page: {{harv|Smith|2011|loc=[http://wiki.riteme.site chpt 3]}}
    • Add url for page: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.{{sfn|Smith|2011|p=[http://wiki.riteme.site 3]}}
    • Create an id for {{Citation}} ref param using {{harvid}}, and link to it from {{sfn}}:
      • Lorem ipsum dolor.{{sfn|BGI|1996}} ...
      • Then, in the ==Refs==section: {{cite book|title=Important Book|year=1996|publisher=Big Government Institution|ref={{harvid|BGI|1996}} }}
    • {{sfn}}s creates a link to '#CITEREF' + auth + year, from a ref named 'FOOTNOTE' + auth + year + page; e.g, these three are identical:
      • {{sfn|Jones|2006|p=26}}
      • <ref name="FOOTNOTEJones200626">{{Harvnb}}</ref>
      • <ref name="FOOTNOTEJones200626">[[#CITEREFJones2006|Jones (2006)]], p. 26</ref>

  • {{harvc |last=contrib name |year=pub year |c=contrib title |in=source editor/author name}}
    • {{sfn}}{{harvc}} (or: {{citec}}) → {{cite book}}{{harvc}} creates a CITEREF anchor from one to four contribution or chapter author surnames (|lastn=) and the value in |year=. This allows {{harvc}} to be the target of a link created by {{sfn}} or {{harv}} family templates. From |inn= and |year=, {{harvc}} creates a CITEREF link similar to those created by {{harvnb}} and {{sfn}}
For a working example, see User:Mathglot/sandbox/citec.
  • Using CITEREF - {{Citation}} & {{Cite book}} produce CITEREF anchors you can link to with {{sfn}} and {{Harv}}:
    • {{Harv|Smith|2006|p=25}} produces the link #CITEREFSmith2006
    • {{sfn|Smith|2006|p=25}} produces the link #CITEREFSmith2006.
    • {{Citation|last=Smith|first=John|date=27 January 2006|title=My Life}} produces the anchor CITEREFSmith2006.
    • Linking to it: [[#CITEREFSmith2006|(Smith, 2006)]]
    • Linking from a ref with page: <ref>[[#CITEREFSmith2006|Smith, 2006]] p. 25.</ref> (Same as {{sfn}}.)
  • Quoted excerpts - Adding a quotation with {{sfn}} with |ps= param:
    • Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.{{sfn|Smith|2011|p=2|ps=: "A quote goes here."}}
    • Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.<ref>{{harvnb|Smith|2011|p=2}}: "A quote goes here."</ref> - identical to above
    • Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.<ref>[[#CITEREFSmith2011|(Smith, 2011)]] p. 2. "A quote goes here."</ref>
    • Quoted in a secondary source: Curabitur a tempor dui.{{sfn|Smith|2011|p=2|ps=, quoted in {{harvtxt|Jones|2010|p=343}} }} (renders as: ...quoted in Jones (2010), p.343

[edit]

Using insource, hastemplate, and so on.

  • term1 matches rendered page (with/without quotes); insource:term1 matches wikicode
  • !@#$%^&()_+-=~`{}[]|\:;'<>,.?/ – greyspace treated as space, must be escaped to be searched) Help:Searching#Spaces and mw:
    • no escaping characters within double-quoted terms; escaping chars within regexp terms never hurts.
  • Specials:
    • " for exact search, double-quote character; also blocks stemming on unquoted terms H:SPCHAR
    • -! for negation, hyphen and exclamation mark: (negates terms at the beginning of a word or phrase) H:EXCLUDE
    • \? single char wild: escaped question mark
    • . any char
    • .* any char string (including newlines)
    • * 0-n wild: asterisk
    • ~... fuzzy: tilde at start: ~retrun returns 996,060 pages, starting with Rerun
    • ...~ force: tilde at end: retrun~ forces search from top left search bar, returns only two pages that contain this typo
    • "jakarta apache"~10 proximity: two terms within 10 words of each other
    • <9-10> multi-digit numeric range; even <1-111> works.

Not supported (see mw:Help:CirrusSearch#Substitutions for some metacharacters)

  • \s [^!-􏿿] (white)
  • \S [!-􏿿] (not white)
  • \n [^ -􏿿] (newline or tab)
  • [^\n] [ -􏿿] (anything but newline or tab)

Examples:

  • all uses of |bar= within {{foo}}, with {{foo}} having the parameters on individual lines (from WP:VPT):
hastemplate:"foo" insource:/\{\{ *foo[^\}]+\| *bar *=/
  • categories which use blank param to indicate sort as top cat (yields about 1/2 false +; dunno why):
    insource:between insource/\[\[Category:[^\|]+\| +\]\]/
    Note: the word between is a domain-narrowing term; a pure regex search is expensive and may likely time out
[edit]

These return results in JSON format, which can be much easier to parse with regexes and so on:

Example: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/api.php?action=query&list=prefixsearch&pssearch=Template%3AEditnotices%2FPage%2F&pslimit=500

Revert eagerness

[edit]

How trigger-happy is someone to perform reverts? Get last 500, select/copy, paste to a note, then apply this:

  • ^.*(Reverted|undid|rollback|manual revert).*$

and count the number of matched lines. Mathglot (talk) 05:11, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Search for templates usage

[edit]

Use advanced search params:

For example: do any pages transcluding the Talk header template, use param 'search_term3'?

Result sorting: add sort keys to the search url: mw:Help:CirrusSearch#Explicit sort orders

  • &sortby=last_edit_asc, oldest first
  • &sortby=incoming_links_desc , roughly: most to least popular

Foreign sources

[edit]
  • Wikipedia:Attribution#Language: Because this is the English Wikipedia, for the convenience of our readers English-language sources should be used in preference to foreign-language sources, provided they are otherwise of equal suitability...
  • WP:NONENG (from WP:V):
    • Foreign sources allowed: Citations to non-English reliable sources are allowed on the English Wikipedia. However, because this project is in English, English-language sources are preferred...
    • Quoting: If you quote a non-English reliable source (whether in the main text or in a footnote), a translation into English should always accompany the quote.
  • WP:TRANSCRIPTION (from WP:NOR): Faithfully translating sourced material into English, or transcribing spoken words from audio or video sources, is not considered original research. For information on how to handle sources that require translation, see Wikipedia:Verifiability#Non-English sources.
  • WP:RSUW (WP:Reliable sources and undue weight; supplement to WP:RS): only English and it's provincial; only foreign, and it impedes readability/verifiability

Lead

[edit]
  • Purpose: MOS:LEAD The lead should stand on its own as a concise overview of the article's topic. It should identify the topic, establish context, explain why the topic is notable, and summarize the most important points, including any prominent controversies.
  • Summarize: MOS:INTRO The lead section should briefly summarize the most important points covered in an article in such a way that it can stand on its own as a concise version of the article.
  • No unique info:
    • MOS:LEADNO (in: MOS:LEAD): Significant information should not appear in the lead if it is not covered in the remainder of the article. alias: LEADNOTUNIQUE
    • MOS:LEADAVOID (in: MOS:LEAD): Apart from basic facts, significant information should not appear in the lead if it is not covered in the remainder of the article.
    • WP:LEADFOLLOWSBODY (in: WP:Writing better articles): The sequence in which you edit should usually be: first change the body, then update the lead to summarize the body.

  • Style: WP:BOLDTITLE, WP:BOLDSYN, WP:BOLDAVOID, WP:TITLEABSENTBOLD
  • Alt names: MOS:FORLANG: a single foreign language equivalent name can be included in the lead sentence, usually in parentheses. Do not include foreign equivalents in the lead sentence just to show etymology.
    • Chernivtsi Oblast (Ukrainian: Чернівецька область, Chernivets’ka oblast’) is an oblast (province) in western Ukraine...
  • References: MOS:CITELEAD:
    • Redundant citations: Because the lead will usually repeat information that is in the body, editors should balance the desire to avoid redundant citations in the lead with the desire to aid readers in locating sources for challengeable material.
    • BLP rules are stronger: Any statements about living persons that are challenged or likely to be challenged must have an inline citation every time they are mentioned, including within the lead.
  • Writing it: WP:LEADFOLLOWSBODY The sequence in which you edit should usually be: first change the body, then update the lead to summarize the body. and Don't try to update the lead first, hoping to provide direction for future changes to the body.

  • Precedence of substitution in parser functions: use #tag (see above):

  • As to why one would use #tag:ref, for more details see mw:Extension:Cite#Substitution and embedded parser functions.
