Balzout

I need your help...I am trying to place a new article to define the word Balzout. I need help getting it into the dictionary and I thought by getting it on wikipedia would help. I own the copyright to this name because my husband and I own the company that created this word. It was blocked by you and I am trying to figure out how to fix this? Thank you! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Juliabarnhartcable (talkcontribs) 18:12, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry but Wikipedia only retains articles on topics that are already notable (through third party sources like newspapers etc.) - if it generally doesn't meet WP:N then it's not eligible (see also this). -- Mentifisto 18:21, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Is it possible to own copyright on a word? It certainly isn't where I live, and I have never come across any suggestion it is possible anywhere else. Perhaps she means a registered trade mark? JamesBWatson (talk) 09:41, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
I suppose so. A word cannot be copyrighted, it seems. -- Mentifisto 05:45, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Contributions from ie 172.163.107.51

Hello,

I'm a sysop from svwp and we've had some troubles with a user that seams to have been vandalising a lot of articles by just adding strange headlines. The same IP have been here on enwp: User talk:172.163.107.51, do you know if there's any discussion around this problem user somewhere because on svwp we've seen this from a few IP-addresses originating from aol.com.

I'm asking since you've warned the user a few times. Also see luxos interwiki contributions tool for more info. Best regards /Fluff (talk) 18:55, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

I couldn't find any discussions when searching and google barely has anything about the word itself, either. This looks strangely similar to some IPs putting ==INFRINGEMENT== as headlines as well. -- Mentifisto 05:45, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Happy birthday!

It looks like you've been on Wikipedia for three years today. Time flies, doesn't it?

Happy Wiki-birthday! I hope you have many more great years in the project. – Quadell (talk) 19:00, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Heh, yes it sure does fly. Thanks! -- Mentifisto 19:03, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Question about sending deleted articles

Hi Mentifisto - I notice that you emailed a deleted article to an editor whose primary interest is apparently related to Encyclopedia Dramatica. Did you by any chance read the article before sending it to an email address at klulz.com? Did it not seem like something of an attack piece, given that a major author of the piece (Jameth) is mentioned in the article as one of the harassers of the subject? I'm asking, as few admins will send copies of articles deleted four years prior to accounts who were not directly involved in the writing of the article, particularly when the article is about a living person. I'll watch your page for your response. Risker (talk) 05:03, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

I did read it but it didn't seem to be that bad (and the information could be found elsewhere...) - the deletion also wasn't due to G10 or for other confidential reasons. -- Mentifisto 05:19, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for our off-wiki discussion of this. Just in case anyone else is wondering, the log for this article is missing its initial deletion, which occurred in December 2004, the record of which was likely lost due to some server/database problems in 2004/05. That added to the complexity of reviewing this case. I don't suppose anyone reading this would know whether or not G10 was operative in 2004/05? Risker (talk) 06:36, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Why can't the band Taintstick have a page on Wikipedia? How is it that every band signed to the same label (Suburan Noize) is "significant" enough to have a page and not them. How is a band that was chosen as Gibson Guitars "5 Worst Band Names Of Today" not "noteable?" How is a band that recieves major airplay on Sirius Faction Radio Channel 28 not worthy of Wikipedia? The band has over 300,000 song plays on their MySpace which is more than numerous bands on Wikipedia. Two of the members are DJ's for Sirius. They have 2 music videos out and an album due out in September. Jason Ellis (Lead Singer) even mentioned having their Wikipedia page deleted on his Sirius radio show and does not understand why his band is single out as being insignificant. They have had the likes of Tony Hawk, Rob Dyrdek, Amber Smith, Heidi Cortez, Angie Savage, Jason Mayhem Miller, Ryo Chonan, King Mo in their music videos. All of these people have significance and Wikipedia pages. This is ridiculous. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Deekortiz5 (talkcontribs) 06:22, 12 June 2009

Serious

Looking at the edits by User talk:Narnbread, I think the New Zealand police should know about this. It appears to be strong threats of violence and abuse amongst other things such as posting of someone's personal details. Your thoughts?--The Legendary Sky Attacker 09:29, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Voila

Ages ago, you asked me to add a link to a user's abuse filter log from their contributions page. I added the link to the code for AbuseFilter, and said you'd have to wait for an update to code that's running before you'd be able to see it.

This morning, Tim Starling updated the MediaWiki installation across all wikis to r51864, which means the change should now be visible on all public WMF wikis which use AbuseFilter.

I've implemented an update to the drop-down menus script, along the lines of your RfX idea. There's a new sub-menu, with links to PrefixIndexes for RfAs and RfBs, and a few other links (similar to Template:Usercheck), which are smart-disabled. Thanks for the idea, and all the best. haz (talk) 14:42, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Be nice to a tim day

Hi. I'm delighted to see this article that I PRODded gone - I would have liked to speedy it, but it didn't seem to me to come strictly under any of G1 or G3 or A1. I did once propose a speedy for things blatantly made up one day in school, but it didn't get much support. What CSD would you have considered appropriate here - or is it best to PROD something like this and let an admin decide to zap it anyway? Regards, JohnCD (talk) 11:19, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Well, it could easily be A7 - it's clearly about a person (Tim, which seems to be the name of the creator) and it doesn't state any notability at all. There wouldn't be anything to work on if it was taken to AfD (when the prod is contested) and it would surely be SNOWed. I suppose a CSD criterion that included things made up one day could be vague but this one was clear-cut. -- Mentifisto 11:27, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi. It was deleted because it sounded like an advertisement - using words like 'authentic', 'guarantees', 'unmatched' etc. Articles need to be written neutrally here since this is an encyclopedia; also, see WP:COI please. -- Mentifisto 13:00, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Flyff

Why was the Flyff page deleted? How come it wasn't protected if it was getting vadalize? Flyff is a major game with millions of players on line. I been looking at the wiki for a few years now just see the information added on it. Couldn't you just have reverted it back to a time when it wasn't getting vandalize or atleast attemp to password protect it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.120.133.245 (talk) 14:54, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

I deleted it not due to vandalism but a lack of notability assertion. It just said that it's a game and not why it should have an article. If you could state that and provide sufficient sources then it will remain. -- Mentifisto 15:12, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Flyff

Someone recently mentioned this Flyff game to me and I came here to read up on it before I went to the trouble of downloading it, but the article seems to have been deleted. It's extremely disappointing that my main source for this type of thing deemed an apparently fairly large game not notable. I'm sure I'm not the only one disappointed, and I hope you'll consider bringing it back up. 71.98.214.223 (talk) 01:11, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

I have a friendly disagreement with a user on the page Victorville, California. I'd like a second opinion. User Hawarren keeps adding Mixed Martial Arts fighters to the Notable Residents section. His cites are basically the league's own pages.

My take is that notability is not established. May I have a second opinion on this so I don't seem like the big bad revert monster?

No, I'm sorry. You just copied it from http://www.webdmemr.com/ - so it was both a copyright violation and very much advertisement-sounding. -- Mentifisto 20:17, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Um I own that page. so I can't make any copyright infrigements. If I was wrong then why is there a link on a wiki page to my software? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lourdesroxanne (talkcontribs) 20:21, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Even if you do the website needs to be released under an appropriate license (see WP:DCP) but it would still be considered spam that needs to be fundamentally rewritten (and would still need to pass general notability). -- Mentifisto 20:31, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

I believe the incident is resolved, please feel free to intervene. ceranthor 22:45, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
It doesn't look like plain vandalism to me. Maybe a content dispute, but I'd prefer some other admin to look at it. -- Mentifisto 22:53, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

I will email you his account name and monitor his editing closely. Fred Talk 21:13, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

No problem. I thought it might not have been blatant vandalism, thus the short time set. -- Mentifisto 00:24, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Deleted XML Editor?

Why delete something before I had a chance to fill out the details? If you put it back, I or someone else can flesh out the page. I created the page because another page on wikipedia linked to it and there was nothing and I added a link so there would be some context for the next person to edit(which might have been me). Pacohaas (talk) 19:56, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Some basic details should be filled out when an article is created... it had nothing but an external link, no indication of meeting the general WP:V, and, of course, a red link doesn't necessarily mean that an article is suitable. Could I perhaps userfy it so you could flesh it out in your own time? Usually articles in the main article space are for basically complete stubs, at least. -- Mentifisto 08:23, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Sounds good, except I don't know how to put the link and some basic info back now that it's been deleted.Pacohaas (talk) 15:22, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
It's userfied here (maybe you'd like to put that link on your main userpage). You can work on it at your own pace there. -- Mentifisto 15:30, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Question about editors blanking their own talk page

Could I bother you with some advice regarding a specific editor and also what is proper procedure in general. I'm asking you because you recently blocked this person for 24 hours. The editor is: 83.25.252.114 and I had noticed they had blanked their own user talk page. My guess was they did this in hopes of covering up their past when they returned. I undid the blanking and I noticed they went back in and blanked it again. Two questions: 1. Was it proper for me to undo their blanking of their own user talk page. 2. If someone does blank their own talk page how do other editors know what previous warnings they have been given? If they blank it, we'll give them a lower warning than they deserve. Thanks for any advice you can provide. BashBrannigan (talk) 20:56, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

You may be interested in reading this discussion. Regards, Javert (talk) 21:52, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I usually don't bother if it's only a blanking. You didn't do anything wrong, but if it was me I'd let it go on the second one, too... it's not a big deal if the talk page isn't blatantly abused. For no. 2, if they blank it users can go on the 'history' tab to check past revisions (e.g.) and then there's always the block log. And thanks, Javert, for responding. :-D -- Mentifisto 22:08, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Block of 199.235.123.238

Hi there. Thank you for blocking 199.235.123.238 (talk · contribs). However, I feel that 1 year is far too long. That IP, though it has a long history of vandalism, had not edited for almost a year until yesterday. Therefore, it seems reasonable to assume that this may be just a random, isolated vandalism spree from a single individual. If that is the case, a week or two would seem more than enough to dissuade them. What do you think? -kotra (talk) 22:35, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

I thought one year would fit well with vandal school IPs because in many places school has just begun, but with that one it could maybe be shortened, I agree, since it didn't edit after its six-month block and there was only a two-day recent history. We'll see if it continues after a week, then. -- Mentifisto 08:26, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll help keep an eye on their contribs after that week is up. -kotra (talk) 18:35, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Haha, thanks... actually I just concocted it in my mind once... originally I meant it to be 'manifestation of the mind' (menti = Italian mente = mind, and then the suffix of 'manifest', changing the vowels) but now I liken it more to 'the mind of Mephistopheles' ('mind' and the more fitting suffix of Mephisto, substituting the ph to Latinize the word). -- Mentifisto 22:28, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Jeremy Bolwell

I notice you have cursorily looked at my report regarding the above user, and have marked it as 'content dispute'. How is this the case, when there are a string of edits to internal references to common words such as 'woolen', and a semi-circular link in obsessive-compulsive personality disorder of obsessive. All these links do is clutter up an otherwise good page. It seems a little galling that one goes to the trouble of reporting this (especially seeing as it's not the first time this has happened with this user), just for it to be regarded as 'content dispute'. I have read the relevant article at WP:overlink and these contributions are clearly a case of this. Particularly given that the first bullet-point on the WP:overlink page is:

Do not link to a page that redirects back to the page the link is on.

Which the obsessive-compulsive article clearly does.

Cheers,

Fortnum (talk) 16:27, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

favor?

Mentifisto,

I saw you were on call. Can I ask you a favor? I said something I shouldn't have said, that is, the language I used in an edit summary was a bit strong. In a message on the editor's talk page I explained what I thought the problem was (and I stand by that); I also mentioned that my wording may have been a bit strong. I still feel that this was a serious issue, but my overblown sense of righteousness should not mar Bender's good career here. So, to get to it, can you "delete" that edit summary, one way or another? I see that in article histories sometimes, some sort of courtesy blanking, and I would appreciate that here. I will be happy to leave another message for Bender, but don't wish to draw too much "outside" attention to it, and Bender does not have email enabled. Please drop me a line if you can't (or won't); I appreciate your help either way. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:41, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Courtesy blanking happens with the content of the page itself... edit summaries are technically permanent, if you don't delete the edit itself (or WP:OS, although that usually only happens with personal information etc.) - it doesn't really look that bad either that it'd warrant deletion, and if you just want to 'take it back' then maybe you can do a null edit and state so, in the latest edit summary. -- Mentifisto 16:01, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Fortunately there was the need for a comma also, so it wasn't entirely "null." BTW, I saw your recent contributions--plenty of NFL teams could use a blocker like you, and the Tide has a hole on defense to fill as well. Thanks again. Drmies (talk) 16:10, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey, if you'd be ok with it, I think this case could use an extended block. Looking at the contributions, I see a lot of evidence that it is a static IP (chiefly, if you check out the contributions you'll see a lot of vandalism of Slavery over long periods of time). It's ok if you want 3 days only, though. Cheers, Master of Puppets - Call me MoP! :D 17:19, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

I'd be okay with it... I thought they hadn't edited much recently so a longer block wasn't necessary. Also, the history of the edits doesn't seem that consistent and it looks like it's an educational institution from its whois... multiple people then at least, even if static? -- Mentifisto 18:35, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
That's true. It's not too pressing, anyway, so I think your block is fine. Master of Puppets - Call me MoP! :D 18:40, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Smartypantsno.11 (talk) 17:53, 11 October 2009 (UTC)Hi Menifisto. On Friday 8th last myself and friends were messing and editing pages. But then we were informed that we were being blocked. We have been punished already in school and we have certainly learned our lesson and I promise that I will never vandalise any site ever again as I now know that there are reactions to vandalism. We have been told to try to get it unblocked and if it is we will receive a lighter penalty. I know we deserved to be blocked as our action were wrong but please can you unblock us our user name was 87.36.8.201 I am truly sorry.

Thanks

Blocked user removing warnings

Indef blocked user USMC12345 (talk · contribs) has removed most of the warnings on his talk page as well as the block notification. Should this be reverted, or would that be inappropriate? I can't see anything in WP:TALK that speaks to this. Thanks! --NellieBly (talk) 15:57, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

It can be reverted, it's not inappropriate, but I usually leave it be since the notices are only there to inform them, mostly. (People can always look at the logs for the account's status.) -- Mentifisto 16:01, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

I really wish this place would soft-block school IPs.

I know: 'Assume Good Faith' and all that, but with school IPs, there seems less and less a reason to. For every good edit, we probably get ten vandalisms. Granted, they generally get locked for a year at a time, but only after they've made a nuisance of themselves. And these are supposed to be students. If they had the internet when I was a student and we did something like this, I'd be soundly beaten. HalfShadow (talk) 17:52, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes... educational institutions prefer to denounce Wikipedia as inaccurate than try to prevent their own students from vandalizing it. Other than that I suppose you'd need a discussion to see whether people here would support what you propose. -- Mentifisto 17:59, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
If such a discussion happened, I would gladly jump in and support such a move. SchuminWeb (Talk) 01:09, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Allowing edits from open proxies

Hi Mentifisto. FYI. Getting a softblock on a hardblocked proxy is one of the oldest tricks in the book.[2] -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:24, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Hm, how do you disable their talk page access, then? -- Mentifisto 20:32, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
A hardblock would be fine, with talk page editing disabled, if the range is hardblocked. But call me old fashioned.[3] -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:37, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

UMD vandal

Thanks for taking care of that University of Maryland vandal. I'm tempted to recommend disallowing talk page access for them in the future, since their pattern is vandalize, block, then claim to be the IT department for the school in requesting unblocking. It's continued abuse of the unblock template, but just not on the same IP every time. What do you think? SchuminWeb (Talk) 01:59, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

I think so too, especially since it seems to be the same person attacking you. I just blocked them again. -- Mentifisto 14:27, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, this person is remarkably persistent. I'm tempted to write UMD to see if they can help in ending the vandalism, since due to the vandal's somewhat roving nature and that we'd block an entire campus affecting thousands of uninvolved users if we asked for a range block, I doubt that Wikipedia's own technical measures will work. What do you think? SchuminWeb (Talk) 01:07, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
It's always worth a try, since they're still trolling you. -- Mentifisto 00:03, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

regarding the vandalism to my user page

It's not about revenge. That bastard vandalised my user page, and I want him banned for it. User pages are more personal than articles. --LordNecronus (talk) 17:43, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Actually, here. Look at that. If that's not vandalism, then what is? HE NEEDS TO BE BANNED. --LordNecronus (talk) 17:44, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

"That bastard vandalised my user page, and I want him banned for it." That is the definition of revenge, you know. :-)
You shouldn't be so attached to your userpage... and since this is an encyclopedia, by its very nature articles are of the utmost importance. But we usually block vandals if they don't stop, anyway. -- Mentifisto 23:54, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Heya :) Can you consider reducing this guy's block? After a look at his first contributions, I think he meant to be constructive before his "my bro did it" lapse of judgment. I'm all for second chances in those cases (worst case scenario we reblock him and we're set). What do you think? -- Luk talk 11:20, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Updates to Caddie_(CAD_system)

Hello. I've made extensive changes to Caddie_(CAD_system), added some references, added a few facts, removed a bit of advertising :-) and removed factoids that I could not find references for. I also need your opinion on the features (see the article's Talk page). Hi. When you suggested that I should consider RfA, I declined because I thought with my limited content-creating record I had no chance, and the same for a subsequent approach from Tikiwont. Block of 65.92.125.16

I believe it is possible that 65.92.125.16 is another ScienceGolfFanatic. EVidence in favor consists of things like:

  • Edits like this (replaces all instances of "the " in a page with "the fucking ") ... this is a favorite trick of SGF's ... however it could be that there are lots of people doing that and I only notice SGF because I am most familiar with him
  • The IP geolocates to near his home ... although it is about 30 miles away, SGF could simply be out on a trip.
  • Familiarity with various Wikipedia users and who knows whom, as can only come from someone who reads Wikipedia all the time even while banned

I will keep a watch on that IP range. If as I suggested above this is just SGF having some fun on a weekend, there probably isn't much we can do. If it becomes a new favorite range then I will pursue an SPI and/or checkuser in order to see if I can get a block similar to the block that has been placed on his school. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 03:24, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

On second thought, I notice there are other IP's in that range that have been used to vandalize recently, such as 65.92.125.47. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 03:26, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
It's definitely him. I'll see what I can do, if anything. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 03:29, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
Were there even more in that range? I could attempt to apply a rangeblock if it'll be effective. -- Mentifisto 03:57, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
I've created a list in my sandbox of all the IP ranges I've found that I'm sure ScienceGolfFanatic has used recently. I also linked that list briefly on ANI at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#User:65.92.125.16, which I hadnt been aware of last night. Of the six IP ranges, the first five are mostly his, and the sixth seems to be shared among a much larger number of editors even though it is one of the smallest ranges on the list. It is probably not a good idea to rangeblock that sixth one, and I don't consider myself enough of an expert on our blocking policy to be able to judge whether or not it would be good to rangeblock the other five even though as I said there are few recent non-SGF edits from any of them. However, I could be helpful by providing clearer evidence for why I'm so sure it is him, as I know that SGF is often mistaken for a random vandal. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 16:41, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Guess what?

re: User_talk:76.31.237.122

I'd like to point you to my comments both here and here; I think that there's been a WP:BITE style overreach, and the behavior of those involved is doing nothing to try to calm the user down. In fact quite the reverse, it's very clear that the hamfisted behavior of those involved is designed, either through simple incompetence or actual maliciousness, to enrage.

The user's accusation seems to have merit; Postoak and Drmies operate VERY closely together, and Drmies' edit here seems to qualify as wikistalking, again deliberately designed to rile the user up. Also, the user seems to be very new - doesn't know how to post references except as links, and doesn't know how to use templates correctly (to which the response should NOT be a tiny little edit summary of "please use the template correctly"; again, that type of behavior is singularly unhelpful and only could serve to enrage an already agitated person.

Really, this is typical of the discourteous hellhole Wikipedia is fast becoming towards new users in particular, and part of the reason I salted my account a long while ago. 98.195.149.80 (talk) 05:51, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Dear Mentifisto, I have a question regarding a recent entry you erased.

Dear Mentifisto, I have a question regarding a recent entry you just erased. I work with this NGO and have several people at Columbia University asking for a Wiki entry. What is your recommendation? Best regards —Preceding unsigned comment added by Riocabral (talkcontribs) 06:58, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. It is recommended that people who are deeply involved with a subject ideally not create the respective articles, because of an inevitable conflict of interest. The article you had was a copypaste (and thus would violate copyright if the website isn't appropriately licensed) and overly spammy, which goes against the requirement for articles to be neutral (we can't have subjects portrayed in a biased way, whether positive or negative). -- Mentifisto 07:05, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

IP triggering edit filter

Hi. I see you are on line. Would you have a look at this IP and see if I have done the right thing? It was reported at AIV both by a bot and a user, and was triggering the edit filter. I saw it had started up immediately after a 6 month block expired, so gave it a year, using {{checkuserblock}} as Luk had on the last block (though I'm not sure what that means), and (after exploring the list of templates) put {{uw-afblock}} on his talk page. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 18:54, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

I'm not too familiar with User:Tile join (the purported owner of the IP, from the checkusering) but this says that it's a static IP, the userpage it was vandalizing also seems to edit football-related articles (and the IP did so in January) so it's likely the same person (and it was petty vandalism, even if caught by the edit filter) so I'd say it's a good block. -- Mentifisto 19:07, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

School IPs

At the school I go to I use the computer with the IP address 82.0.83.150, and I've realised you've blocked it for only three months. As this is an IP used in a school, should the block be extended to indefinite? Minimac94 (talk) 15:18, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

No, IPs are usually not blocked indefinitely because they're dynamic and may be reassigned to different computers. School IPs, however, are frequently given blocks that are years long... which could happen to 82.0.83.150 if they start vandalizing again as soon as the block expires. -- Mentifisto 09:17, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
