Photos for the Wildhearts

Dear Leah, a couple of years ago we were in correspondence when you added several much-needed photos to an article I had created for The Holmes Brothers. I'm happy to see that you are still involved in such endeavors. Meanwhile I have fallen into the role of monitoring the article for The Wildhearts, which is a really old article that once had a whole bunch of photos from throughout the band's lengthy history. Well the non-free police slowly went to work over the years, and just today the very last photo in this article bit the dust. If you think anything can be done on behalf of this now very un-visual article, please correspond. Sincerely, --DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 18:53, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

OK, thanks for your efforts! I will wait a week or two to see if you have any success with the Wildhearts. Let me know what happens, and if your volunteer efforts are unsuccessful I'll look into the methods you've described on your user page. As for my own talk page, I'm a member of the Albums Project and did a lot of work digging up album covers for a big long Project list of album articles that had no such illustration; only for many of those same articles to get deleted later! A Wikipedian's work is never done... --DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 14:18, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Alphabetizing photos

There's no bot, as far as I know, and I'm certainly no expert, but I'll try to help out. As far as I know, the rules are to use last or surnames of people and the first significant word for titles--discarding articles like a, an and the. Numbers may be either listed separately at the beginning, or stuck in the list as if they were spelled out. There's some kind of convention about Asian names where the surname may be listed first, but I generally depend on somebody else to sort that out for me. My first suggestion would be to set the list up in sections by letter, especially if it will be growing. Would you mind if I work on it directly? Pkeets (talk) 16:34, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

If something is listed twice, does that mean it should be "listing (2)"? Or is just an error? Pkeets (talk) 19:23, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
I set up a directory and moved a few listings around. Some, for example Thin Lizzie, were listed more than once, and I accumulated these with a number and question mark so you should be able to pick them out and check to see if I did it correctly. Pkeets (talk) 02:07, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

British spelling on Cat Stevens

Moved from user talk:Tvoz
 – to consolidate Tvoz/talk 21:52, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Leah - long established that we use British English for Cat Stevens, since he is British. Looks off to me too, but we need to be consistent and it's the only sensible way to make the cut. Tvoz/talk 17:06, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Howdy Sistah! I got to admit the places where I used American English gave me s perverse thrill for at least 40 seconds. Sorry it resulted in more work for you, though. I meant to go back and fix it, but "Quick Draw McTvoz" got there first! Anyway, I was going to leave a note on the Cat Stevens talk page, but perhaps it's best said here first, at least. The Stevens article was de-listed from GA for several reasons, but ones I recall offhand are these:
; Not enough coverage of Stevens' work prior to religious conversion.
Too many sound bites of songs. Now the article has twice the clips as before. They demonstrate Stevens' experimentation and progression of his music. It creates a need to add text, which is what was asked for after losing GA status. To me, after a while away from this project with a fresh pair of eyes, it's as if Stevens' coverage goes from 1971-1974 and then not much text until the last pop music album released by Stevens in 1977. I'm still looking for early Stevens photos with hopefully, that "face shot" we sought years ago. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 19:12, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
The work wasn't much, no big deal, I just wanted to remind you so we didn't have to go through the whole article. About GA, let's talk about it here on your talk so it's all in one place - I have you on my watchlist. This is the assessment that delisted it. Frankly, I mostly agree with the reviewer. I think there is too much emphasis on him after the conversion, especially - as I've said lots of times in the context of why the article is correctly titled - since his fame and fortune came from those early years, and it is questionable about whether he would be known at all if he had not come out of that original career. In part we have way too much detail about every appearance he makes now, which is not really necessary or notable for a biography of his life. Also I think there is too much about his psychological state regarding his conversion - in general we rely too much on his own websites and not enough 3rd party sourcing throughout - this is a GAR problem. As for the clips - while I like them, and think they are a good use of the technology, the rules around here are not very friendly to using them. The reviewer raises the issue of fair use - I don't know where you got them or why you think they're usable, but you need to justify them if you want to use them, both from the straight-up copyright matter of justifying fair use to also Wikipedia preferences about connection to the text. As you know, photos are not my thing here - well, neither are sound files - I leave all of that to others and couldn't even advise you about what is required or how to go about justifying their use. So if you want to bring this back to GA, there would be a lot of work required, I'm afraid. The first part does need to be expanded, photos and text, and the second part needs to be reduced, a lot. I expect we'll run into talk page howling if we reduce the controversial matters like Rushdie, so I see this as a somewhat nightmarish enterprise. That's why I didn't tackle it when the review came in. Consolidating paragraphs is easy - the other stuff is not. Tvoz/talk 21:52, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Okey doke. I have you now on my watchlist too. I also agreed on most points made by the reviewer, although it still stung a little. The clips are good. It's that somewhere in that review I recall criticism about having too many sound clips. There were only a few.(?!?) As I said, they do help show transitions in Cat Stevens' music-- actually, now that I think of it, Roadsinger to An Other Cup. Never fear though; I am not interested in that part and perhaps even with my myopic view, missed the newer stuff, which will never be as good, with a couple exceptions. I am beginning to feel though with editors, there's like a shelf life before burnout, or "7-year-itch". Please take a look at my user page. Near the bottom I have kept names of editors who are helpful and/or good teachers. Sadly, I see a bunch of names who are on WAY long-term wikibreaks. As to photos, I'm almost the photo fairy of musicians. 50% of the time I edit, and the other 50% of the time I spend searching for photos and teaching which Creative Commons licenses. We can only accept two of six of them. When a photographer removes the copyright from a photo, and either identify it as free use, or they adapt a Creative Commons license, then I can upload them to Wikimedia Commons. Take a look above the tiny photo gallery and there's a link to the photos I've hunted down, but here's a link: [[User:Leahtwosaints/Leahtwosaints/List of uploaded musician's photos. Anytime you need a photo, and there isn't one in Commons, just ask. Anyway, back to Cat Stevens, I thought I'd look through that Majicat.com for old articles that haven't yet been plundered.--Leahtwosaints (talk) 00:29, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I saw that you removed external links from Laura Nyro with the edit summary, "Moved all unused sources from External links, where they do NOT belong, to the talk page, where they DO belong." From my reading of WP:External links, I do not see any guidance that states external links must be used as sources; in fact, it is clear to me from the guidance and examples in WP:EL that external links do not have to be used as sources in the subject article. Therefore, I plan to revert your edit to Laura Nyro and restore those external links. If you think any of the individual links do not meet the criteria specified in WP:EL, or meet the criteria of links to be avoided, feel free to delete those individual external links. Thanks --hulmem (talk) 22:05, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

For some reason you left your reply on my talk page instead of continuing the conversation here. In any event, I am sure you are acting in good faith and that you believe your edit to be appropriate. However, your reply does not address my points above at all and I believe your edit is in conflict with WP:EL. You acknowledged in your reply that you don't know if you are "100% up on regs", so I recommend you familiarize yourself with the current version of WP:EL. There is no guidance at WP:EL that states external links must be used as sources; on the contrary, [[WP:EL] states "This guideline concerns external links that are not citations to sources supporting article content." WP:EL also states "Some acceptable links include those that contain further research that is accurate and on-topic, information that could not be added to the article for reasons such as copyright or amount of detail, or other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article for reasons unrelated to its accuracy." So links that are not sources are OK as long as they meet the criteria in WP:ELYES or WP:ELMAYBE. Although I have restored the external links in Laura Nyro, I removed the links to YouTube videos as I ascertained they met the criteria for WP:ELNO. I hope you give consideration to what I've stated here. Regards, hulmem (talk) 05:32, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
I was in a rush and didn't think-- I prefer responding on the other person's talk page. Some day I'll check out the Village Pump, but most people don't seem to notice Wikignomes (like myself) and our work. I'm sure there are new Wiki rules, some I never noticed, don't recall where they were, have been changed since I began working here, or never learned. As if anyone is perfect, eh? Aside from the You Tube links you removed, there was a fan site, and those aren't trusted sources per WP:NPOV, esp. when fans join and just put whatever "facts" they wish on them. There are some notable musicians I met long ago, and to hear their disgust at the lack of factual accuracy in many articles is stinging. It appears that on this point, I don't agree with treating the External links section as a parking lot of sources, some of which may be complete fabrication or copyright issues. I'm happy to have met you, but I think we will have to agree to disagree on the point of whether to place them on talk pages or External links. I won't touch the article, but will place sources I find elsewhere on the talk pages of other musicians.
Thanks for replying. I think you may still be misunderstanding my point. I wasn't at all suggesting that it is appropriate for editors to "treat the External links section as a parking lot of sources". Firstly, external links do not have to be sources, and secondly, I do agree that external links should not be a "parking lot" for whatever people want to put there. WP:EL provides pretty clear guidance on the criteria for what should be linked at WP:ELYES, what maybe should be linked at WP:ELMAYBE, and what should not be linked at WP:ELNO. Again, I suggest you (and anyone who is not familiar with external linking policies) to take a brief break from editing to read and comprehend WP:EL so we can minimize these kinds of issues and improve articles in a way that is consistent with WP policies and guidelines. If after reading WP:EL you feel there are additional external links in the Laura Nyro article that are inappropriate, by all means remove them. Regarding fan sites, the guidance in WP:ELNO] states, "Except for a link to an official page of the article's subject, one should generally avoid...links to...most fansites, except those written by a recognized authority." Although the link claims to be an "authorised" fan site, Nyro is dead so I don't see how any authorization Nyro may have made before her death would still apply, and I will remove that external link as well. Thanks for the continued dialog. --hulmem (talk) 14:57, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Without dialog, we'd get nowhere. Some editors I've met in similar situations as this are currently people with whom I now share a mutual respect and assistance. You are right that I need to brush up on rules here when being bold. Still, fansites are generally dicey. Blogs and fansites usually only require signing up and result in contributions that are often patently untrue, but are believed to be "facts" by other readers in many cases- the epitome of violating the rules on WP:OR. Those comments become treated as gospel truth by others who read them. When used in biographical articles as references, it harms the Wikipedia as a whole once the article is revealed as promoting false information. I believe I've uploaded and placed about 2,000 photos of musicians here -User:Leahtwosaints/Leahtwosaints/List of uploaded musician's photos. If the rules for prose were half as stringent as those for images, frustrating that they may be, I think this encyclopedia would be much improved. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 14:53, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Jack Rose photo

Hi, I'm fairly new to Wikipedia and mainly sniff around looking for typos to correct. I have a question that's quite out of my league, and I thought I should ask you since my question involves a photograph that you uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (and which currently appears on the Jack Rose Wikipedia page). On 2/14/10, you uploaded a photo of Jack Rose playing at the Luminaire in 2007. The problem with the photo is that it is a mirror image of what it should be. The photo shows Jack playing guitar left-handed, but Jack was a right-handed guitarist. I know that the original photo was taken by Simon Fernandez, and that it was used in an article in Plan B Magazine. I believe the mirror image was used for the article because of formatting purposes. (You can see what I mean if you look at the article at http://simonfernandezphotography.com/In-Print.) I would like to correct the photo of the left-handed playing Jack Rose and then upload it to Wikimedia Commons. Am I permitted to do that? Do I need Fernandez's permission first? I really don't understand all the ins and outs of copyright, fair use, etc. I just want to turn Jack back into a right-handed guitarist again. Please advise. Hi Leah, to have an LGBT category, a person needs to be self-declared as L, G, B, or T. As far as I can tell, Crosby is none of those, so, no, he should not have one of those categories. However, would he be of interest to WikiProject LGBT Studies? Absolutely, the talk page of the article should be tagged for the project. LadyofShalott 17:48, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Re: Can you use this?

Hi Leah. Yes, Lofgren and the Big Man could use some additional photos. Real gold would be Lofgren during his career peak back in the mid-1970 - the article really needs to have more text about that period. As for the Magic Tour article getting that 2008 ticket, yes that could be done - do you know what other tour articles include ticket photos? Would need to see whether the images were used under "fair use" or not. Wasted Time R (talk) 13:34, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Re deletions

Hey Leah, the short answer is that only an admin can make the final decision to delete an article (because only admins have the tool to do the deletion), but that anyone can nominate an article for deletion. The full answer is more complex, because there are three basic ways to nominate an article for deletion: speedy deletion, proposed deletion (aka prod), and WP:AfD. Speedy deletions are supposed to be done rapidly, and must meet very strict criteria. Prods are done anytimean article does not meet the speedy criteria, but you believe the deletion to be uncontroversial. (Anyone, including the article creator, can challenge a prod for any reason, and that forever invalidates future prods.) Finally, AfD is used for all other deletions - when there needs to be a community discussion to decide if deletion should be the outcome. (In AfDs, the closing admin must determine the policy-based consensus of those who participated in the discussion.) So there's deletion policy in a nutshell. See Wikipedia:Deletion policy and the other links I gave for more info. I believe you could justify a {db-a7} for lack of assertion of importance for Indivised, but with an article that's been around that long, (and touched by a number of hands) it might be safer to go ahead and list it at AfD. If you use Twinkle, it can make all the different types of deletion nominations easier. Let me know if you have follow-up questions! LadyofShalott 01:46, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Hey there

Hi! Hope you're well :) Lone wolf, I like that! No big projects at the moment, but I noticed a few musician articles that don't have any photos at all, even in the infobox. Guys like Bob Weston (guitarist), Bob Brunning, Nigel Watson, and a few minor Thin Lizzy guys like Mark Nauseef, Dave Flett, Francesco DiCosmo, and maybe a better one of Snowy White? I don't know how easy they'd be to find though. The first two are deceased, so fair use might be a bit easier for them. If anyone can, you can... but don't worry if it's not possible :) Cheers! Re:Problems with images

This is probably the best solution: Have Mandy send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org from an email address listed on her website. In the email, provide a link to the account on Wikimedia Commons and her website, and say that the account is owned by Mandy, and so has authorisation to release her photographs. Ask the OTRS volunteer (I can do it for you, or another volunteer may get there before me) to undelete the images- provided they are her images, the OTRS volunteer can then undelete the images with an OTRS permission template. If you like, she could also include a link to this discussion so that any other OTRS volunteer understands what it is that I am suggesting is a reasonable course of action. I've contacted Mandy- if she replies and confirms that the account is indeed hers, I can do the rest. J Milburn (talk) 15:50, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
