WP Education Project at SLU

Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

course page wizard

Hey Kevin. Feel free to use {{course page wizard}} to set up course pages, if you think it's helpful. Just add that for the Description, and it creates subpages (which can be edited by anyone, not just people with course rights) for the description, timeline and grading. The default result is like Education Program:Example University/Example Course (2013 Q1). Alternatively, you can just get that top bar of links by added {{Course page 2/Header}}. The latter will become a default part of course pages after the next software update in a few weeks.

Also, please use 2013 Q1 for the term, just so that we have all the courses listed under the same term.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 13:45, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Great! How do you want to split up the work? Maybe just all three of us sign up to be OA of both classes? I see Keilana has already done that. I also like the idea of all three signing up for both classes. In order to take the brunt off of Klortho, we could change up the order in one section. Keilana, since you have added your name to section 82, why don't you add your name first to section 81. And, Serendipodous, you can add your name to sections 81 and 82 in a second and third spot, respectively. This will change it up a bit, but you can still help each other out by watching each others talk pages.
Another idea just occurred to me.... would it be easier to direct the students to the talk page of the Education Program page for each section? This way you would only need to watch the section talk page and the topics would be specific to the Mol Biol course. I tried removing and adding myself again to section 81—it didn't seem to work. Here are a couple of things I can do, and I'll get to it tonight:
  • "subst" the tabular header in the description section, and make that part of the Common page;
  • parameterize the OA username;
  • Put a prominent list in that header OA1: ..., OA2: ..., OA3: ....; and finally,
  • ping Sage with a feature request that we can change the order in the summary table.
In order to direct students to use the course talk page as a "bulletin board", Keilana, do want to scan through the course page, and see if there are places where we should point students to the course talk page instead of, for example, my user-talk page? Klortho (talk) 15:14, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

FYI, I'm keeping an eye on these since it's a complex use case. Since the next update to the extension will move the Summary table down beneath the main body anyway, I'm guessing the best approach will be to just manually highlight the OAs near the top of the Description section. Okay, I finished parameterizing the OA usernames. The orders are:

  • Section 81: Klortho, Serendipodous, Keilana
  • Section 82: Keilana, Klortho, Serendipodous

I've been adding a "welcome" template to each new student's talk page, as they sign up. If either of you notice new ones that don't have a welcome template, feel free to plop one down. Unit 2 Homework question from Doug

Hi Klortho, Thanks for the help on the link for the sandbox tutorial! Can you check if I did it correctly for unit two requirement(five pillar summary). I followed the tutorial instructions and have a link at the bottom of my userpage and my 'summary' comes up. Hi, Doug,
It looks like you have three versions of the same thing: User:DougCovert/Unit2:FivePillarsSummary, User:DougCovert/Unit 2: FivePillarSummary, and User:DougCovert/sandbox all have very similar content. I'm not sure how you created the first two -- you said you changed the title, and I'm not sure where you did that. The title of a Wikipedia page is also it's "address", and uniquely identifies it. You should put this homework in the User:DougCovert/sandbox page, and probably get the other two deleted. Just put this at the top of each page you want to have deleted: {{db-g7}}

Unit 3 Introduction We've unofficially met as I'm the one who forgot to sign in while replying to Autumn's posts on my page, but we're supposed to officially indroduce ourselves as part of the Unit 3 assignment. I'm a misplaced New Yorker living in California working in the biodefense industry and on my MS Biotechnology through the John's Hopkins AAP online program. I was initilly intimidated by the thought of an online biotech masters, but so far, this is my third class, and it has been a great experience. As much as I use Wikipedia as a referance in my daily life, I've never worked with editing or creating pages, so this is a true learning experience. I'm nervous, but who knows, I may love it! I am SO sorry. I have no idea how I was logged out but apparently that has been the issue. Also regarding the sandbox for this past weeks assignment. I had set up the sandbox but not the sandbox talk page. Maybe you can clarify the difference or direct me to a tutorial to explain the difference between the User talk page and sandbox talk page. Every page in Wikipedia, except talk pages themselves, have a corresponding talk page, even sandbox pages. You don't need to use them, and, in particular for sandbox pages, there's no need. The talk pages are for discussions, like this one. For a sandbox page, which only you are editing, there's not much need for discussion! Hope this clarifies a bit. Make sure you go over all the tutorial material for this week, and if it's still not clear, review earlier weeks' stuff. Klortho (talk) 17:51, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

I am trying a new different text formating in wiki page. If I want to combine the following 3 things in text formatting, how I could do that? They are 1. web-link, 2. text coloring, and 3. text size. I only successed the first 2 text formatting. How I could add a custom font size on top of this? Help:Wiki markup. I want it to be linked text in 300 percent of red-colored text. Any tips?
Hi, Min-Hun. First some feedback. For your question above, you shouldn't have indented it three levels (":::") because it is not a reply to the previous comment. You should either have started it with no indent, or else you could have started a whole new section, since this is really something unrelated to your introduction. Next, I would first point out that the kind of text formatting you're talking about is fun to know how to do, but not really appropriate for most Wikipedia articles. Articles should conform to a certain style, and ad-hoc inline formatting would make the articles look sloppy and inconsistent. But, to answer your question, for sizing, you can use the {{Resize}} template, similar to the {{color}} template you used: Help:Wiki markup. Or, if you look under the hood of those templates, you'll see that it just translates your stuff into HTML, so you could use that directly: You can do anything at Zombo com!. Talk Page Organization

Hi, Chris. I believe we've already met on my talk page, but this is Christine. Thanks again for your help with the indentations. I'm kind of curious about the talk page organization. A lot of the sections on your page are in relation to your role as an OA, so wouldn't it make sense to put them all under one heading? Do users/owners typically revise posts to their talk pages in this way? Is that encouraged or frowned upon on Wikipedia? -MonopterusAlbus (talk) 01:54, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Good questions! No, the number of sections is not a problem. Generally speaking, you should only add your comment to an existing section if you're discussing the same topic. To me, it makes sense that each greeting I get from a student is in its own section -- each one is a new "thread". Users/owners typically *do not* modify their own talk pages, and yes, it is frowned upon. The talk page should be an accurate record of the conversation. Having said that, I do sometimes correct obvious mistakes, like bad indenting or *not* starting a new section where there clearly should have been one. Klortho (talk) 00:51, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi Chris! Does the number of sections ever get confusing? I would think that a user editing a wiki page would have to scroll through the talk page for quite a while to determine how to even begin editing a talk page and discussing the article, since many users can create a looong list of sections (similar to how your talk page currently is). Hi, Tisquestra. Yes, the situation is not ideal. I rely heavily on email notifications, and when I get one, I click on the second of the "difference" links, the one labelled "for all changes since your last visit." Am I still registered in section 82 instead of 81?

Ah, I see the confusion! It seems there's a disconnect in the materials you've been provided. The tutorial video describes "sandbox", with a lowercase "s", but the template I put on everybody's talk pages links to "Sandbox", with a capital "S". I've reported the problem to the Education program guys. In the meantime, just continue to use "sandbox", as you have been, and ignore the link on your talk page. Hi Chris, I just had a quick (hopefully!) question on references. I was able to make references within the text, but when i try to create a footnote with the references listed I'm having trouble. Hi. First, sorry, I edited your sandbox page! I meant to just use the "preview" feature to see if I could figure out what was going wrong, but I hit "save" by mistake. If you look at it now, you'll see that it works with {{Reflist}}. I think that the problem was that you had <References/> in the wikitext, and that was somehow messing things up. I really don't quite understand it. But anyway you can see the differences between your old version, and the latest version save by me, here. Hope that helps! Hmm, that's interesting. I notice that the difference is that you are using {{Reflist}} and your classmate (who's references are showing up) is using <references />. I am not sure, but it seems that these two can't coexist on the same page. The real problem seems to be that when you have multiple {{Reflist}}s on a page, you have to tell each one which "section" to get the references from. I was able to get it to work on my sandbox page, here, by changing them to, for example, {{Reflist|group=Frameshift mutation}}. But, on a normal article page, there will be only one notes/references section, and you won't need to do anything like that. Note that the assignment this week calls for these to be on your main sandbox page, so you won't need these kind of reference sections on your group page (although, if you want to keep them, and fix them the way I did, or by simply using <references /> as your teammate did, that would be fine too). Editing Article Chart Section

Hi, Autumn. Go to your group page, then click the "Edit" link at the top. You'll see wiki-markup for the article table -- it is a little cryptic looking, but if you stare at it, it should start to make sense. Search in there for the article you want to claim. For example, "Acetylation". The line after that will look like this:
| [[Wikipedia:USEP/Courses/JHU_MolBio_Ogg_2013/Group_82X|Group 82X]]
Change the "82X" in that line, in two places, to "82F", so that it looks like this:
| [[Wikipedia:USEP/Courses/JHU_MolBio_Ogg_2013/Group_82F|Group 82F]]

How to correct(or replace) an anonymous sign with my wikiID(mhk5600)

While I was working on Unit 6 in Wiki project as a part of Molecular biology class, I posted my 2 comments on group's talk page (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:USEP/Courses/JHU_MolBio_Ogg_2013/Group_82D) without logging into Wiki first. So my posts were completed as "anonymous user", like this "... 68.116.172.204 (talk) 10:15, 5 March 2013 (UTC)...". How could I correct it? I am guessing that simple replacement with "/~~~~" at those anonymous sign spots might not going to work, because that would insert a current time stamp in it. Any solution for sych a case? Hi, Min. Yes, for this kind of question, the answer usually is, click the "edit" button, look at what it looks like somewhere where it is correct, and then copy-and-paste it to the place where you want to fix. If you do that on the page your referring to, you'll see that when you sign with ~~~~, the wikipedia software replaces it with something like "[[User:Mhk5600|Mhk5600]] ([[User talk:Mhk5600|talk]]) 14:47, 5 March 2013 (UTC); whereas, if you sign without being logged in, it will look like "[[Special:Contributions/68.116.172.204|68.116.172.204]] ([[User talk:68.116.172.204|talk]]) 14:34, 5 March 2013 (UTC)". Feel free to replace the "Special Contributions" portion (everything before the time) with the correct wikitext. Does that make sense? Klortho (talk) 20:40, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Unit 5 Assignment Question

I don't think they are related, but I'm not too sure. I just know that we were given advice that for articles under the WikiProject MCB, it's best to use Diberri's tool, for consistency's sake. It is important, not only because of how the references look, but because Diberri's tool formats the metadata in a consistent way, that is machine readable, and useful for text mining applications, for example. Citations

Hi Chris, In unit 5 we were assigned to write a short paragraph that cited at least 2 sources, and cited at least one source, 2 or more time. When I used the "cite" tool to create my footnotes, it created a new number each time I cited a source, even if it was the same one. For instance, I have footnote numbers 2,3,4,5 in my paragraph but 2 and 4 are the same source, as are 3 and 5. This caused me to be docked points in the assignment, but I don't know what to do differently to correct that issue. I hope you can help! Thanks!PJCollettJHU (talk) 01:07, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

The problem wasn't what you described: the footnote numbers that you're describing are expected and correct. The problem was that you didn't use Diberri's template filling tool; instead, I think, you used the citation template tool within the Wikipedia editor. For example, this citation:

If I use Diberri's tool, with a PubMed ID of 20617142, and the "add ref tag" box checked, I get this:

The instructions were pretty explicit that you're supposed to use that tool. Sorry if you missed it, we'll try to make it more clear next time.
