interested in being an OA for Developmental Biology course?

Hi klortho, Keilana|Parlez ici is going to be an OA for a developmental biology course I'm teaching this fall, where students edit wikipedia pages (in teams of 3). Here's my course page from doing this spring 2013 Education Program:Boston College/Developmental Biology (Spring 2013), and I'm setting up a new course page now Education Program:Boston College/Developmental Biology (Fall 2013)(though just fraked the course wizard when adding my course timeline table!). She said you were super, and if having two OAs for a course isn't greedy, would be great to have you join us! I have 22 currently enrolled, so will have 7 teams, each team working on one page.     • Listen to and watch beautiful Wikidata edits
    • To support the inclusion of geographical coordinates in Wikidata, just about two months a new data type came available and d:Property:P625 "coordinate location" was created. Already 565,000 pairs of coordinates are now available on WikiData. Compare this to 870,000 coordinates on English Wikipedia or 1,500,000 items with d:Property:P17 "country", likely to have coordinates. Have a look at them on a map.
  • Did you know?

    • Wikivoyage is still scheduled to get access to data on Wikidata (aka phase 2) on August 26.
    • Developers are working hard to also make the URL datatype available by August 26 but there are factors that are not in their hands so it might have to be delayed until the next deployment in 2 weeks. URL as a datatype will soon be available on test.wikidata.org. Please give it some thorough testing and report bugs.

Thanks for the welcome and complement on my user page. I should be thanking you because I totally used your userpage as a template and may have borrowed some of your code hahaha.

Which mudder did you do? I did my two in Vermont, one in May 2011 which was freeeeeezing and another in July 2012 which was much better.

How do you like the bioinformatics program? I am doing biotech, but I think I will most likely concentrate in bioinformatics.

I did the Tough Mudder up in Frederick last year. It was fun, but the organization and coordination with the local city was very poor, and there were a lot of problems. But anyway I'll probably do another one again sometime.
I like the BioInformatics program a lot. The biology/chemistry classes are very tough, but the programming classes are easy and fun.

Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

Question About Images

Hi Chris, I have a couple of questions about an image I created for Dr. Ogg's Molecular Biology class Wikipedia assignment. I used Photoshop to create a graphic of an E coli plasmid and uploaded it to the Extrachromsomal DNApage. One question I have is how do I get the actual image to show on the page rather than just the link? The other question I have is that on the page for the graphic is says that the graphic has been reviewed and is a candidate to be moved to Wikipedia commons, but I have no clue as to how to go about doing that. Watchlist and notifications question

Hi Klortho, I am having problems with my Watchlist and notification set up. Up until last Sunday I was receiving email notifications anytime a change was made to any article on my Watchlist. This past week I have been checking my email daily, but saw not Wiki notifications for article changes. Due to other work, I haven't had much time to work on Wikipedia until night. I went into my Watchlist and found out that a great deal of changes had been made to several articles on my Watchlist, yet I did not receive any notifications of these changes. I have already checked my settings on Wikipedia and nothing has been changed. When I have a few minutes free at work, I try to check my school email, mostly to see if there are any Wiki changes. I don't usually have time until I get home to go on Wikipedia itself. As such, these notifications are really important and have been a great reminder system up until now. Please advise!!!! Hi, I'm sorry, I really don't know the answer! I have had trouble with the watchlist notification in the past, too, but usually it's turned out to be a temporary problem. You might try asking at the help desk. Also, you can always "manually" check your watchlist. When you are logged in, just click the "Watchlist" link the upper right, and you'll get a list of pages in your watchlist that have changed recently. Klortho (talk) 15:48, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Formatting question

Hi Klortho, I have another question for you. This time it has to do with a formatting change that was proposed by one of my classmates. The same classmate then wrote back later with a concern regarding his proposed changed and suggested that I contact an OA. Please see below:

Here is the idea: When the article opens up, most of what I see is a super long "contents box" that kind of overwhelms me. And, as I scroll through the article, I hit the major sections, sub-sections, and sub-sub-sections and I can't really tell what is a "sub-section" and what is a "sub-sub-section". (If I look real close, I can see that the font size is very slightly smaller, but it is hard to tell.) So, one idea is the make the sub-sub-sections just "indented bullets". This will help to visually separate sub-sections from sub-sub-sections and also will take the sub-sub-sections out of the contents box (making it much shorter). To illustrate this, I did a copy/paste of part of your article into my "sandbox3". Click this link to get to it: Jim892/sandbox3 Good luck thinking through this. Note that I replaced the sub-sub-sections (that have 4 equal signs on each side) with a "*" at the beginning of the line and then bolded the sub-sub-section text. Then, I added two ":" at the beginning of each block of text below the sub-sub-section. The editing required to do the indenting is a little tedious, but might be worth it for the visual effect.

Here is the concern:You are correct. The "TOC limit" just changes what displays in the Contents Box. You can do the "TOC limit" and the indenting/bulleting together or do just one and not the other. They won't interfere with each other. Now, one concern I have about my own suggestion on the indenting and bulleting... You might want to check with an Online Volunteer concerning my approach to be sure it doesn't violate Wikipedia's style guidelines or something. I got a comment on my own article about "bolding" items in a list, so I'd hate for you to do all that work and then find out it isn't "legal" to do it that way.

I like the idea that he put together in his sandbox (Jim892/sandbox3). I think that it would help enhance my group's article (Molecular-weight size marker). However, I do not want to go through and make the changes only to find out that it is against Wikipedia guidelines, especially since my class is coming to a close on 12/14.
