  • The global consultation on partial and temporary office actions that ended in October received a closing statement from staff concluding, among other things, that the WMF will no longer use partial or temporary Office Action bans... until and unless community consensus that they are of value or Board directive.

This explains a lot. Drmies (talk) 01:51, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Arbitration case opened

In 2018, you offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has now accepted that request for arbitration, and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog/Evidence. Please add your evidence by March 23, 2020, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog/Workshop. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration.

All content, links, and diffs from the original ARC and the latest ARC are being read into the evidence for this case.

The secondary mailing list is in use for this case: arbcom-en-b@wikimedia.org

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:02, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Hey y'all, after near a year of inactivity, I am back around, and back in Canada (I got stuck in South America for about five months or so). Hoping to get back to do some editing and such. Cheers, --kelapstick(bainuu) 04:04, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Did I miss anything? --kelapstick(bainuu) 04:07, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Truly wonderful to see you back, and OMG, you are back on "social media" too. Welcome! As for what you missed, just a dose of expected chaos. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:06, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Cullen328, it's been a rather hectic year for me (and everyone else of course), had to change jobs (twice) and move across the country (again). But we are settling back in Nova Scotia, and I am back and forth to Vancouver Island until at least the end of the year. As for Social Media, yes I check in on Facebook every now and then still, but that's about it. I have mainly migrated to the real dumpster fire of Twitter. I find it suits me better (better baseball content). Cheers, --kelapstick(bainuu) 04:17, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Hah! I have spent several years trying to figure out how Twitter works, and pretty much all I see is celebrities shooting their mouths off. I guess I haven't found the "sober thoughtful Twitter conversation" section yet. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:44, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Yes, the key I found is to find a topic you wish to discuss. So my circle largely focuses around Calgary (where I was living) and the Blue Jays. Of course you can't go far without hitting politics, which can be amusing too. --kelapstick(bainuu) 04:46, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Request for copy of deleted article

Hi there!

I am hoping you might be able to provide me with a copy of the article on Michael A. Aquino. I have been working on a draft article on the subject that I hope will meet Wikipedia's standards, and if there is anything useful in the deleted article I hope I might be able to use it as a resource (not just citing the old article directly in the new one, to be clear!). I want to have a solid foundation of a draft article before I plead my case for undeletion :)

(FYI, just for context, I believe the article's original deletion was done at the request of the subject, Aquino, himself, likely due to unsourced or poorly-sourced claims which did not meet BLP requirements. Aquino has since died, and is no longer a "LP". I don't know how this affects things, necessarily, but seems to me worth mentioning)

Cheers, --De Insomniis (talk) 23:25, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

De Insomniis, having looked at the previously deleted version, I don't think there is anything in particularly that would be useful to salvage, basically everything is sourced to a page about him on xeper.org (which you alrady reference). I don't think there is much to be gained for you by recovering a deleted draft. I would just continue on the way you have been, as you are already lightyears ahead of what was previously deleted. --kelapstick(bainuu) 15:54, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
Ah, well, that's good to know I guess! Thank you for checking. I think there is still quite a bit of work to be done on my draft article but is encouraging to hear you say that! If you have the time, would you mind also checking out Michael Aquino and Michael Aquino (Lieutenant colonel)? I wouldn't be shocked to learn that they were in a similar state of affairs to the one you checked, but you never know! Thanks again. --De Insomniis (talk) 17:08, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Long Wong's requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. – S. Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
