Are you really interested in doing this? I made up a quick list of the articles that ought to be included.

Main: 2007 Atlantic hurricane season - I am assuming that the FAC will pass

Subs: Timeline of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season

List of storms in the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season
Subtropical Storm Andrea (2007)
Tropical Storm Barry (2007)
Tropical Storm Chantal (2007)
Hurricane Dean - GA nom pending
Tropical Storm Erin (2007)
Hurricane Felix
Tropical Storm Gabrielle (2007)
Hurricane Humberto (2007)
Tropical Depression Ten (2007)
Tropical Storm Ingrid (2007)
Hurricane Karen (2007)
Hurricane Lorenzo (2007)
Tropical Storm Melissa (2007)
Hurricane Noel
Tropical Storm Olga (2007)

The seven articles below GA status (in bold) will all need to come up to GA, and a few of the GAs should become FAs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Plasticup (talkcontribs) 19:55, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

I'd say it's possible, but a few things:
  1. Timeline of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season cannot be a GA. We sent a Timeline article and it was rejected as being too close to a list. So, if anything, we would need to decide whether that should be sent to FAC or FLC.
  2. List of storms in the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season seems like low-hanging fruit for improvement. That could be easily made an FA in a couple of weeks.
  3. Erin needs to be checked for accuracy, and it can be bumped to B-Class. You could even try for GA right now, and the worst thing that could happen is that it would be held for a week.
  4. I'd send Olga straight to GAN for now.
  5. Lorenzo is the article that needs the most work. It needs an expanded impact section, more pictures if possible, reference/dead link cleanup, and probably an expanded preparations section.
Overall, not impossible, but that would take about a month or two to do. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 19:55, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi! I noticed your comment at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), where you said that the main page being in the article namespace "hasn't caused any problems". The list of problems caused by the main page being in the article namespace kind of got buried in the discussion. ais523 pointed several of them out, and I've added a more complete list to the discussion. Essentially, the problem is that bot/script developers have to write special code around the main page more often than you might think, and so it would simplify the situation in general if we separated the main page from article content. I hope this explanation helps...does my reasoning make more sense now? —Remember the dot (talk) 06:06, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

I noticed that you added ArborWiki as a source for sister cities. According to http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Reliable_source_examples#Are_wikis_reliable_sources.3F, "Wikis, including Wikipedia and other wikis sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation, are not regarded as reliable sources." I have removed your reference. Thanks! Cmadler (talk) 20:21, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

True, it's just an "essay", but the problem with citing a wiki is that in my experience, many places copy information from Wikipedia. This leads to a circularity, where we put up an unsourced statement, another web site copies that statement without attributing it to Wikipedia, and then we cite that site! Regardless, I think citing UM and the City Council minutes is a better solution. Thanks! Cmadler (talk) 13:48, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

52/311, and other eastern Putnam/Dutchess pics

Julian,

Starting with this edit (hope you don't mind my bumping your pic for mine ... I will move the former over to Commons so it doesn't get deleted as an orphan), I have begun uploading those pics that I took in late May on that trip to the eastern Putnam/southeastern Dutchess region. This will include Route 52 passing Lake Carmel, a lot of RHPs in the region, train stations we didn't have pics for yet, a nice photo looking north on Route 22 for that article etc. Just thought I'd give you a heads-up, as I'm sure a lot of these will start showing up on your watchlist. Daniel Case (talk) 20:16, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Not a problem ... how come you're not involved with NYSR? Spreading yourself too thin? Done what you could? Too much drama? Daniel Case (talk) 20:32, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Whoops

Gah, I can't believe I forgot about that again. Off to work... Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 13:38, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Looks like I'll be reminding you every day from now on.  :)
We're getting closer. I've been working on the "Location: " item, filling it in with a hierarchy of the regions (and/or bodies of water) each country is located within. Check 'em out and let me know what you think.
Also, we could sure use your help on the administrative divisions and government sections!!!!
For speed on the administrative divisions sections, split the task up... Do the little hierarchical list of administrative districts first (for all of the countries). Then fix the subheadings for the administrative divisions section for all the countries. Then add the maps and lists of administrative districts (easier to do these two in the same step).
I've been using Wikipedia:OTS#Tabs_and_tabbing including Linky (for Firefox), a combination I find much faster than AWB for many tasks. Have fun.  :)
You are using Firefox, aren't you? If not, you should install it right away, and Linky too!

Don't flatter yourself, part II

(just kidding)

By the way, I noticed you removed a whole section from Wikipedia:WikiProject Topical outlines/Draft/Topical outline of Palau.

Palau definitely has administrative divisions.

I've restored the section and have filled it in. It could use some finishing touches though. (hint hint).

Some countries don't have administrative divisions (subdivisions with a local government). For those, don't erase the subheading. Instead, keep it, and under it place "None.".

Have fun, and keep up the general good work.

The Transhumanist    04:59, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

I've been working on this one to show what a complete list of this type should look like.

Feel free to pick one of the others in article space, and finish it up.  ;)

Municipalities

In the administrative division sections, we need to keep "municipalities" for nearly all the countries (almost all countries have them - cities, towns, and/or villages - except city states).

Doesn't Palestine have towns and villages?

The Transhumanist    00:09, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Wow, these lists are a lot more work than I thought! Anyway, I'm not sure how I missed those divisions of Palau. And about the municipalities, I got the impression that the Municipalities subsection is only for divisions designated as such. I didn't know that it applied to all towns and cities in general.
Also, I just came back from vacation, so I'll be back to working on the lists after I catch up for a day or so. Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Pittsburghese Inquiry

Hello. Can you explain why you removed the reference to "Catapult Soul"? There wasn't a note about it. Also, "Catapult Soul" really does contain more Pittsburghese than any other piece of literature (It's a published book that's over 1,000 pgs). So it's a fact and a perfect example of what the dialect is really like (as opposed to what's written below it: just listing words and phonetics). From what I read in the wiki instructions, we are allowed to include anything that would be found in an encyclopedia. This is more than worthy, especially since he is a Pittsburgher, so is there a better way to re-write it? Please fill me in on how to go about this.

Wow. I'm impressed. That was a big chore.
In answer to your question, we're getting very close. But there is still some work to be done. The government branches sections need to be corrected/completed - their contents were generated using a template, but the standard data used doesn't fit all countries (not all countries have a parliament, for example). There is only one section left (including its subsections) that needs to be completed before the pages are ready for Around the World:

  • Branches of the government of x
    • Executive branch of the government of x
    • Legislative branch of the government of x
    • Judicial branch of the government of x

There are a few more things that need to be completed before the lists can be moved into the main namespace:

  • Fill in the blanks, and blank [[]]'s
    • Population:
    • Size:
    • "(specific elections)" needs to be replaced by links to specific elections (by year, usually)
    • International organization membership
    • Commander-in-chief: [[]]
    • Economic rank:
    • Currency of x:
  • Blue-linking (creating redirects for) standardized items for which the articles' names are not standardized:
  • Fix other temporary links
  • Material in the lead paragraph(s) that is covered in the body of the list needs to be removed from (or moved from) the lead.
  • Fill in the External Links section

Moving these lists into the main namespace could have a huge impact on their development, because then each list will fall under the scope of the WikiProjects of the respective countries. That's a lot of WikiProjects that may become involved with refining and maintaining these lists.

The move will be accompanied with the placing of new sections on each of the WikiProject pages, their talk pages, placing banners on the talk pages of each list, and including links to these lists in hatnotes on the relevant articles and portals, and placing section links in the see also sections of relevant articles (Geography of x, Military of x, etc.). Lots of AWB work.

Re: Pittsburghese Inquiry

I'm sorry, I use Huggle when reverting vandalism (not saying your edit was vandalism), so it's hard for me to keep track of what I revert. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 13:07, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

How could this be improved?

By the way, why did you revert the edit? (it's here, didn't take me long to find) -- Gurch (talk) 22:47, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure how that could be improved; it's mostly a matter of I just revert vandalism without paying any attention to the article I'm reverting.
Not a good idea; the subject of the article is important for context, otherwise daft decisions are made.
The majority of the time, I just revert vandalism that I can tell at a glance is blatant vandalism (emoticons, profanity, all caps). I'll keep that in mind, though. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 23:02, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
So when later queried, I find it difficult to recover the revision in question.
That's what the page history is for. :)
True :)Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 23:02, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
The only solution would be to add a notice somewhere that would request diffs when commenting on an edit.
As for your other question, that edit clearly wasn't vandalism, and was almost certainly a case where I accidentally pressed the revert button rather than the show next edit button right next to it. This is where I think Huggle could be improved somewhat, as I've experienced this issue a number of times before. Would there be a way to distance the two buttons a little bit? –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 22:54, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
Use the keyboard shortcuts, Space is a long way from 'Q'. I already made those two buttons bigger than the others so they were easier to press, any bigger and the interface wouldn't fit properly at low screen resolutions -- Gurch (talk) 22:58, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, I guess I never thought twice about using the keyboard shortcuts...I always just used the bar at the top. I'll try that next time. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 23:02, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Since others are doing it, I might as well try. You know how this works. If you watch this page, ~~~~. Thanks, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 15:07, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

  1. I don't have it watchlisted, though I visit fairly often. Does that count? :) The Transhumanist    21:04, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
{{sofixit}} and watchlist the page, then! ;) –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:06, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
But I'm a manual browser, for the most part. I like to traverse Wikipedia from page to page, using its link structure (menus, see also sections, embedded links, lists, etc.). I've got you on a special list, for example - to remind me to contact you regularly. Speaking of which... The Transhumanist    21:11, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Oldschool; that's fine too. :) Though by the looks of this thread in the past several hours, not many people watchlist this page either... –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:14, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
  2. Oh, don't get all "left out" Julian. I'm on your case... The Rambling Man (talk) 21:16, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
  3. I might as well... Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 21:19, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Next task

Here's an easy one...

The World Heritage links (there are two on each list, in different sections) are screwed up. They all point to the same page, but that's incorrect for all the countries except those in the Americas. The links need to be fixed to point to the correct page - whichever one the country is listed on:

For the countries that don't have World Heritage Sites, the entries need to be changed to "World Heritage Sites in x: None".

The Transhumanist    21:22, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

I'll get to it as soon as I figure out what exactly is wrong with the links Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 22:01, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. Most of them point to List of World Heritage Sites in the Americas, which is not the right page for any country elsewhere in the world. Some of them have been fixed, but most haven't. Keep in mind that some countries don't have any World Heritage Sites at all, and need to state: "World Heritage Sites: None". The Transhumanist    23:11, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

A little off-topic

It's probably getting off-topic for the current discussion in Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_adminship, but, sure, I've seen cases where young admins caused problems. Off the top of my memory, I can remember seeing what I considered bad behavior from Sceptre, Mongo, Jeffrey Gustafson, Betacommand, Zoe, Alkivar.. there are probably more. Also, I'm not sure how old all these people are- in some cases, I assumed they were teenagers from how they acted. I'm reasonably confident at least a few of them are, but I could be wrong on some of them too. Heck, in that very thread, Majorly is acting like a teenager right now. There's no lack of evidence here. Friday (talk) 21:38, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Well, would you accept a mature Wikipedia admin who was 17, and wasn't the most mature in real life? That would really be discriminate. I am not saying your actions are, but I really thinking that age discrimination should be outlawed here on Wiki.Mitch32(UP) 21:45, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

You signed up to work on Félix Houphouët-Boigny, an FA-Team mission. After undergoing a thorough peer review and GA review, the article has been much improved. Now we need to copyedit - come join the party! Awadewit (talk) 09:56, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Main page redesign

Hello, Juliancolton! Wikipedia:2008 main page redesign proposal was recently cleared of all design entries. You may want to re-enter your design(s), based on the details here. (You can see the old list of designs here). NOTE: A survey was conducted on what users wanted to see in the new main page, you can see the results here. Userboxes

Do you know how to make userboxes?

Perhaps you could make one for Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics?

Also, you've done so much work on geography pages lately, that you could proudly display this on your user page:

This user is a member of the
Geography WikiProject.

The Transhumanist    23:33, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Completed this one enough to move it to article space.

It desperately needs maps and pics.
