Just wanted to touch base with you on your comments regarding my featured article nomination of Solomon P. Sharp. Were my edits there sufficient to address your concerns? If so, would you mind striking them through so the featured article director can see that they have been addressed? Do you feel you can now support the article's promotion to FA? Just a random question

Are storms supposed to travel this fast? (This was on a warning message today)

* AT 1237 PM CST...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS DETECTED A
LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DESTRUCTIVE WINDS
IN EXCESS OF 80 MPH. THESE STORMS WERE LOCATED ALONG A LINE
EXTENDING FROM DEER CREEK TO 2 MILES SOUTHWEST OF STANFORD TO 3
MILES EAST OF BEASON...OR ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM 7 MILES
SOUTHWEST OF EUREKA TO 15 MILES WEST OF BLOOMINGTON TO 10 MILES
WEST OF CLINTON...AND WAS MOVING WEST AT 210 MPH.

Inferno, Lord of Penguins 19:09, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

I thought as much, seeing as the other storms were travelling at 60-75mph. Pretty bad typo if you ask me o.O Inferno, Lord of Penguins 19:54, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
Well, I just checked on those storms again, they are travelling about 80-85mph in reality. Inferno, Lord of Penguins 19:57, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

How are the country adjectivals coming along?

These need to be done before the country outlines can be moved into article space, because as they stand now, many of the links lead to the wrong place (the country article, rather than a page about the adjectival). We really need these. The Transhumanist    01:19, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Please read edits before you revert them

You recently reverted a change I made to the GeekNights topic with the following message to me:

Welcome to Wikipedia. The recent edit you made to Geeknights has been reverted, as it appears to be unconstructive. Use the sandbox for testing; if you believe the edit was constructive, please ensure that you provide an informative edit summary. You may also wish to read the introduction to editing. Thank you. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 23:36, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Now, the edit I made was a clear removal of obvious vandalism, which I noted clearly. All of the content added was copy/paste vandalism that had nothing to do with GeekNights, and the ONLY changes I made involved a simple reversion to the previous, non-vandalized version. Why did you undo my change, re-adding the vandalism to the page?

Closing script errors?

Are you using a closing script? Could you please do something to make sure all the required edits associated with relisting AFD's get done when you relist? You have a lot of cases tonight where the AFD remains open on the original log. THis causes problems when someone doing closings works off of the WP:OAFD list, and does not notice it was just relisted. Thanks, Jerry delusional ¤ kangaroo 07:14, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Passage of Hermine GA

I fixed the text issues within the article and passed Hermine. I humbly request that within your GAN/GAC/GAR templates that you link to the Meteorology and atmospheric sciences section instead of the Biology section. Linking to the Bio section adds slight complication to removing the article from the GAN/GAC/GAR list. Thank you for your consideration. Thegreatdr (talk) 18:53, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism to Horace Greeley High School

The page has been vandalized again, by the same anonymous IP that you reverted and warned before.

Several months ago, when I was much more active here than I am now, I "knew the ropes" of the warning and blocking policies, and could handle these things effectively. Way out of practice just now, so I might push the wrong button or place the wrong template. Could you take care of this? I promise to read up on current practice. Responding to UAA bot reports

First of all, thank you very much for all your work at UAA. It's good to have someone putting effort into reasonably and fairly applying the username policy.

Just one critique -- you often reply to automatic reports of usernames by bots with the UAA templates. The bot doesn't care. It can't read your response. And most bot reports are false positives anyway. Unless you think there's a particular reason to leave the report up for more scrutiny, it's better just to remove the report. rspεεr (talk) 17:09, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Sure, that's fine, that's what they're for. I just think you're being too cautious. If you discuss a bot-reported username with the user, that doesn't really need to be reviewed by anyone else. (If the discussion fails and the user keeps editing, that's when you bring it to RFC/N.) rspεεr (talk) 17:14, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for the rollback rights. I promise to use them appropriately and to not take advantage of them. Have a Happy New Year. Regards Ijanderson (talk) 20:11, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Relisting AFDs

Just a note to bring your attention to WP:RELIST, which changed fairly recently. AFDs are now only relisted if there's only been one or two !votes besides the nominator, and are virtually never relisted twice. If there has been a reasonable level of discussion and contribution but no consensus, the AFD should be closed as "no consensus" rather than relisted. Stifle (talk) 09:40, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Shortfin Mako is no longer being actively edited by students involved in the Wikipedia:WikiProject AP Biology 2008. This student has opted out of the program for second semester. Hopefully, they did no damage during their brief experience with Wikipedia - the article were stubs and in poor condition on their arrival; however, I will look it over. My apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. I had some initial doubts about the level of commitment among my students; however, the second semester should consist of a more focused group much reduced in numbers. Regarding your concern about my username - Alexknight

Thanks for your welcome,

First let me tell you how I came up with this username, I'm from the city of Alexandria, Egypt (hence Alex), and I have (you can say childish) fondness of knights. Also let me assure you that I had no idea of the existence of Alexknight12 (by the way, there is also an AlexKnight99) at the time I created my account and I had no intention of masquerading as Alexknight12 or Alexknight99 or whomever. I just chose a username and it was not reserved.

Now, after explaining why I chose this username, I must also say that I don't like the idea of changing it, specially that this was my sixth or seventh trial to come with a meaningful and personal username. I also believe that although both names look similar but they are easily distinguishable for anyone internet user.

Best wishes and regards, Alexknight (talk) 10:44, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of Sebastian Bonnet

Greetings,

I am shocked and apalled at the deletion of the Sebastian Bonnet article. Not only were the appropriate persons not informed, but a simple Google test shows

Results 1 - 10 of about 30,400 for "Sebastian Bonnet". (0.14 seconds)

Over 30,000 hits, or the other way, 79,000 hits:

Results 1 - 10 of about 79,700 for Sebastian+Bonnet. (0.06 seconds)

Some editors on Wikipedia are typically on a crusade against porn, and gay porn in particular.

There is simply no justification for this deletion. And remember, Wikipedia is not a vote. I suggest you undo this and re-list for a fuller discussion, or take this to deletion review.Ryoung122 11:36, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sebastian Bonnet, which had consensus to delete the article. Julian was just carrying out the technical deletion. I've speedied it - the AfD was held and closed properly so CSD#G4 applies. This early it should have gone to deletion review (which I suspect that it would greatly fail, since the consensus was obvious, rather than being recreated). Cheers, CP 17:23, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

New York City Meetup

Next: Sunday January 18th, Columbia University area
Last: 11/01/2008
This box: view  talk  edit

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, look at our approval by the Chapters Committee, develop ideas for chapter projects at museums and libraries throughout our region, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the November meeting's minutes and the December mini-meetup's minutes).

We'll make preparations for our exciting museum photography Wikipedia Loves Art! February bonanza (on Flickr, on Facebook) with Shelley from the Brooklyn Museum and Alex from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We'll also be collecting folks to join our little Wikipedia Takes the Subway adventure which will be held the day after the meeting.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

You requested that my page "Chiral lewis acid" be deleted. Class for articles concerning clean up tags

Where in the criteria concerning the class of an article does it say that clean up tags require an article to be start class? Last I checked, only GA articles cannot have a clean up tag. I was working under the assumption that Allen is a C class article, as it is missing a section people consider important (though that information appears to lie NOWHERE online, including the NHC references.) Just curious, because it seems like anytime some tries to upgrade anything to C class lately (barring articles up for GA), there are a few editors downing articles to Start, normally out of habit or preference rather than anything stated in the article class criteria. Lowering article class does negatively impact the wikiwork of this project. Thegreatdr (talk) 23:59, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I live in the thing's footprint. I was hoping to work it into the Great Gale of 1848 article as an example of the "worst case scenario" we worry about during hurricane season, but could not find RS that would say it followed that path. Relisting AFDs

Just a reminder that per WP:RELIST, AFDs should only be relisted a second time in very exceptional circumstances. If several editors have contributed to an AFD which has already been relisted once and there is no agreement on what should be done, the AFD should be closed as no consensus rather than relisted again. Stifle (talk) 12:58, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

I try to keep a limit of four or five "votes"; is that reasonable? –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 13:51, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
WP:RELIST contemplates anything more than two people plus the nominator as being enough, and says "If a debate has already been relisted once, the closer should consider carefully if a no-consensus close would be more appropriate than a second relisting. If further discussion is unlikely to bring consensus, then the discussion should simply be closed". As such, I suspect that once a debate has already been relisted, if there's four or more "votes" including the nominator but no clear result, no consensus is the correct outcome. Stifle (talk) 14:23, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough, I'll take note of that in the future. Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 14:31, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Retirement from RFA

I'd like to direct you to the explanation at my talk page; I hope I don't make a stink but I really do think the RFA process is biased and ineffective. Basically, if User X were to run for an RFA right now, he/she might get 30 support !votes before someone even evaluates them. It's all about popularity. Best, Ceran 22:26, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

You don't believe somebody should tell these people that really NOBODY cares about their mums? No, honestly. He seemed to be some pompous person who thought Wikipedia could be used for personal genealogy or something. That speedy deleting articles on his mum was unfair... like, really WHO CARES about his mum?! Do you? 194.75.236.70 (talk) 15:12, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi. You recently closed the above AfD as "no consensus" (which in practice amounts to "keep"), and I was wondering if you would mind explaining your reasoning for this? It is true that the numbers of !votes in both directions were similar, but as far as I can tell, there were 7 established editors (including the nominator) arguing for deletion mainly on grounds of non-notability, while all but one of the 5 "keep" !votes were from single-purpose accounts, quite possibly socks. Moreover, none of the arguments offered for "keep"ing, when challenged, seemed to stand up to scrutiny:

  • No evidence was produced that the online journal that the subject co-founded and edits (with only two issues published so far) is considered a "major well-established journal in its subject area", as required by the relevant WP:PROF guideline.
  • The only coverage of the subject in independent media consists of two trivial mentions (just name and affiliation, in a list of speakers at a local event) and one peripheral mention of that same event in a letter to the editor. Yet this coverage was boldly asserted to "meet WP:PEOPLE easily", twice.
  • No evidence was produced that the organization that the subject represents in Chicago would be considered Wikipedia-notable at all, let alone so notable that being one of its area directors or a regional representative (not even a member of the national board) would in itself confer notability.

All in all, I don't see how the subject could be considered notable under either the WP:PROF or general WP:BIO guidelines. So before raising the matter at Deletion Review, I was hoping that you'd either reconsider closing the debate as "no consensus", or point out some relevant aspect that I may have missed. Thanks, Hqb (talk) 20:39, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

OK, thanks for the answer. Given the muddled situation, I hope you don't mind if I ask for a relisting through DRV, then? Hqb (talk) 21:01, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

How did you come up with a 'no consensus' closure here? seresin ( ¡? )  00:23, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Userfying is not precluded by deletion (indeed, it only comes after deletion). The merge suggestions would not be affected by deletion: common terms can be added to the article without consulting the page, and there was nothing to merge. Please reconsider your closure. seresin ( ¡? )  00:35, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
Which ones were those? The first one didn't address the the argument that it's an indiscriminate list that is unverified, the second one had no basis at all in policy. seresin ( ¡? )  00:41, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
"[U]seful, encyclopaedic list" is not a good argument, it has zero basis in policy whatsoever. I have taken the AfD to DRV. seresin ( ¡? )  00:54, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry but I think you are mistaken in this case. There is no reason to prefer reflist. And multiple columns should be used for shortened footnotes.
Apis (talk) 02:25, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
In fact since reflist results in a smaller font size, there is good reason to avoid it.
Apis (talk) 02:27, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
No it's not, please stop. How did you come to this conclusion?
Apis (talk) 02:44, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
It says no such thing, this is the first paragraph of the {{reflist}} documentation: "Use this template to create a reference list in small font for an article. Note that there is no consensus that small font size should always be used for all references; when normal-sized font is more appropriate on an article, use <references /> instead".
Apis (talk) 03:03, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
No, that's clearly not what it says. In general {{reflist}} with multiple columns is great if you use shortened footnotes. In other cases it just reduces text-size and that makes the reference section harder to read, i.e. less accessible, for many. There is no benefit from reducing the size of the reference section in itself.

Hey Julian ;)

Hi Julian. I recently got an article Monarchies in the Americas to good article status and was wondering if it were possible to get it to FA status. I have absolutely no experience in the FA area and was told it'd be better to get some friendly advice or a peer review first. I checked the FA area for someone to ask and your name sounded familiar (I believe our paths have crossed before, even if only in a minor way!). So really what I'm asking is: Could you take a quick glance at the article and advise me as to whether you think it's even worth submitting for a peer review (I don't wan't to waste everybody's time for nothing, do I!?). Thanks so much, --Cameron* 19:00, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I really appreciate it! By all means feel free to copyedit. ;) --Cameron* 12:50, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

My name "Adwikistrator8"

Hello, I have a note of you saying about my name could violates wikipedias rules, sorry for the delay in response.
I have red the link you give me, I "could" understand how it is *possible* to be confused with "Administrator".
The reason of the "" is that never thought about it at first :-) and second I have an "8" in the final name, obviously a clearly indication of a alphanumeric nick, which are, representative as luck of authority and on the contrary; vanal or informal.
Explanation of the name:
-Ad (adding)
-wikis (wikipedia)
-trator (popular English suffix for "the who makes the prefix part", as for example : "terminator" (the one who terminat), illustrator (the one who illustrate), infiltrator (the one who infiltrate),etc.
In my case would be "the one who ad to the wiki".
The only authority that I really find it is that looks like the most popular name "terminator" :-D. More than that honestly I didn't found.

I ad to that am not an English native speaker, maybe it could be more confused if you are a native...

I hope that it gets more clear, and show that there is not bad intentation.

By the way, I reemember that I have created and "Adwikistrator" count (without the 8), and now I can not access, it say it even not has an email account ¿?. Could it be that it was "inahabilited" or somethin?.

Further more, in the spanish wiki, I have the "Adwikistrator" nick, you could enter and see my small :-( but not "athorities") countributions. And you could leave a message that I can responde to confirm that I am it.
And also never had a warning like this.
Please confirm that you receive my response.
Greetings

Adwikistrator8.

P.D. Maybe and "AdminXXX" name is clear to be derivated from "Administrator" because its preffix english which is clear. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Adwikistrator8 (talkcontribs) 23:09, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Julian,

The above AfD that you closed concerned two articles about essentially the same company. You deleted one of them, but left the second one (J.P. Turner & Company Capital Management, LLC) and the two redirects to it (JP Turner Capital Management and JP Turner Capital) in place. Was there a reason for that? Owen× 00:40, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you! I would have deleted them myself, but I don't think it's good form for the nom to close an Afd. Owen× 02:55, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Reverting on Königsbrunn

Hi Juliancolton, I saw you reverted an malicious edit from the article "Königsbrunn" a few days ago I would like to ask you a few questions about. You have to know that I am writing a skilled labour about the reliabilty of Wikipedia and therefore extended the article about Königsbrunn (which is my hometown btw^^) and than did some vadalism on it. So if you don't mind answering my questions I would be glad, because it would help me to understand the coherences of the encyclopedia a bit more.

  • How did you come to the Königsbrunn article (I mean, the city is not very notable)
  • Did you read the complete article or did you spot the vanmdalism at once?
  • And, most important, why did you only revert the last of the three vandalism edits and not all of them?

As I said, I'd be glad if you could help me (at best quickly, as I have to hand in my work in 4 days^^)

County Route 97 (Rockland County, New York)

I have a question about this article. How does it meet the guidelines in Wikipedia:Notability (highways)? Just because it has a "History" section does not mean it is of "special historical significance". The article is redundant and provides no additional information than is provided in List of county routes in Rockland County, New York (76–118A). Andy 1One (talk) 22:09, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

  • It didn't have your standard, wait until edits notice and the one edit did fall into the less-than-inspiring-good-faith zone, if you catch my drift. I'll get back to blocking vandals now and leave you alone. :-) Carlossuarez46 (talk) 00:45, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Full protection for WWE One Night Stand

Hey Julian, since I know I can count on you for protection matters, can you fully-protect WWE One Night Stand, there is an edit war over whether the event will now be called WWE Extreme Rules. User:Mshake3 is avoiding a discussion of consensus at WT:PW and is taking matters into his own hands, and people are up to their 3RR now. You're an admin?!

I'm rather surprised that an admin would say something like "What sense does it make to remove sourced information?" --NE2 14:24, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

So you stand by the implication that it doesn't make sense to removed sourced information? --NE2 14:27, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
If there's little else to note, maybe it shouldn't be a separate article? I have a very hard time seeing how this error belongs in an encyclopedia, even a specialized one about county roads of New York. --NE2 14:38, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
You haven't explained why a database error belongs in the article. What makes this important enough for an encyclopedia? --NE2 14:45, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
The question isn't "What sense does it make to remove it?" but "What sense does it make to include it?" How does including it improve the article? --NE2 15:01, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Then we're at an impasse, since I see no valid reason for including it. --NE2 16:03, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Twin concepts

Hi, what is the procedure when an article, Twin concepts, which has been deleted after discussion, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Twin concepts, gets recreated by the original creator? It seems like Vakeger is trying to address the criticism about the article being poorly cited, but in a very strange way: Twin concepts and [edit to my talk page]. Normally, I would just speedy delete again, but there seems to be some level of good faith, so I thought I would ask for your opinion. I'll watch your talk page for a reply, or you can reply on mine. why do not you delete twin concepts from those articles listed under below? Are you going to disqualify that phrase and recommend the use of dualism instead? Funny guys you are. http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Special:Search?search=twin+concepts&go=Go If the concept ois the same then it is replaceable. How is that for a definition? Vakeger (talk) 06:53, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

pretty much different

I believe that twin concepts and dualism are not the same, first of all, because dualism is not defined, its crap. See my comment there Twin concepts is not my brainchild, so can do whatever you like, but it is a no brains attitude to lexicography not to answer criticism raised on why you do not have a proper definition of headwords, such as this one or anotehr one I pointed out. keep up the firepower... :-) Vakeger (talk) 21:53, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of Bing Thom Architects Article

Hello - Just wondering if you could provide a more in depth explanation as to why this article was deleted. I read the full A7 clause but credibility and importance I think were made pretty evident in the article that was posted with the portfolio list and external links. --Kathychang (talk) 17:46, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the quick reply.
Responding to your critique of the subject not being notable, as a graduate of architecture, I have used numerous works by Bing Thom Architects' in case studies and research.
They are a reputable Canadian Architecture firm with renown built works at a national and international scale and have been awarded a diverse set of design and architectural awards, such as the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia Medal and the Governor General Medal from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada - the list goes on. I would be able to provide extra content to the article with a full list of these notable distinguishments.
It is difficult for me to understand why it is possible for other firms (of similar caliber or less) such as Cohos Evamy and Diamond and Schmitt Architects to have articles up on Wikipedia. Shouldn't these articles be to the same high standard you are asking?
Please reconsider undeleting this article as you have agreed with me on its credibility and importance and I can add the list of awards to satisfy the notability of the article. --Kathychang (talk) 18:45, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
So adding the list of awards is not sufficient? What can I do at this point in time to undelete the article? Can I rewrite it and repost it? --Kathychang (talk) 18:58, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi, would you consider restoring List of birthday songs and relisting this AfD? The majority of the "delete" arguments were based on WP:COPYVIO and WP:NOT#LYRICS, which were both addressed by my total rewrite yesterday. After my rewrite, there came 2 deletes and one keep; but one delete was essentially WP:JUSTAPOLICY and a personal opinion, which failed to explain how WP:NOT#DIR or WP:NOT#GUIDE actually applied to this article; and the other failed to address how one would find such articles without a list article functioning as an index to them. While there may have been a consensus to delete before the rewrite, I think there needs to be more discussion on the state of the article to determine consensus after the rewrite. Thank you. DHowell (talk) 06:39, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Re your comment: "Actually, the majority of the delete "votes" were based on WP:NOTDIRECTORY, so I feel my closure was appropriate."
Actually, only 4 out of the 9 "deletes" (10 before Mandsford reversed to keep) used "not a directory" as a rationale, and only one of those came after the rewrite. And the three before the rewrite also brought up the copyvio issue and one brought up lyrics, so it is unclear that they would have argued to delete the rewritten, non-copyright-violating, lyrics-free, article. Since consensus was clear that the copyvio and lyrics issues were the major issues, there was insufficient discussion on the "not a directory" issue. If you're not willing to relist, I will bring to DRV. DHowell (talk) 04:36, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi there- after a few months break I'd like to make another run at FAC for this article. Do you have any comments or suggestions about if you think it is ready? Rather than put it up for another peer review, I figured I'd just do a quick survey first in case people think one is not needed.
