- In fact you seem to have deleted multiple Users' edits. Mztourist (talk) 04:24, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry, I believe that was the result of an edit conflict, although it is a bit strange (every other time I've had an edit conflict, it gave me an alert prior to saving the page). Perhaps this is the fault of the MediaWiki software (as AN/I has by far the most revisions of any page on any Wikimedia project, and strange things happen there sometimes). At any rate, I didn't intend to remove anyone else's comments, so if you haven't already done so, I will go and try to fix whatever happened. jp×g 04:26, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Mobile IP editors are now able to receive warning notices indicating they have a talk page message on the mobile website (similar to the orange banners available on desktop). These notices will be displayed on every page outside of the main namespace and every time the user attempts to edit. The notice on desktop now has a slightly different colour. [8][9]
Changes later this week
- Wikidata will be read-only for a few minutes on 11 November. This will happen around 06:00 UTC. This is for database maintenance. [10]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In the future, unregistered editors will be given an identity that is not their IP address. This is for legal reasons. A new user right will let editors who need to know the IPs of unregistered accounts to fight vandalism, spam, and harassment, see the IP. You can read the suggestions for how that identity could work and discuss on the talk page.

90% of articles are never nominated for deletion
[edit]Do you think this is a true statement? My math: (~30k/yr x 20yrs) / 6M = 10%. I don't know if my logic is sound, I thought you might have a view on the matter based on your study of the stats. Levivich 03:52, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Might be worth figuring out how many articles are nominated for deletion multiple times -- I have the impression that while not routine, it's common enough it might impact those stats. By extension, more articles would be not-AfDed than 90%. Vaticidalprophet 03:59, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
- An interesting question. I haven't set up the Oracle to store to a database, or else I'd be able to answer it within about thirty seconds (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM afds WHERE nom = 1). Alas, this is a project for another day. jp×g 04:33, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Idea for island articles
[edit]Many islands have few pictures available for articles. Aerial photos can be downloaded from EarthExplorer, uploaded to commons via bigChunkedUpload, and then cropped to show the island. Some islands have scanned 19th century and early 20th century federal survey documents on glorecords which can be converted from pdf and uploaded to commons.--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 22:17, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Epiphyllumlover: Huh. That's eerily close to what I already do (except I use NASA WorldWind and USGS TopoView). Looking at that EarthExplorer link, though, it looks like I am seeing much better satellite images for Powder House Island! At the bottom, though, it says
Tiles © Esri — Source: Esri, i-cubed, USDA, USGS, AEX, GeoEye, Getmapping, Aerogrid, IGN, IGP, UPR-EGP, and the GIS User Community, ESRI
. I don't know how many of those are freely licensed, or how to tell which specific source was used for a specific tile/zoom level/etc. Big if true. Another thing I've found helpful is the desktop version of Google Earth's "historical imagery" view, which gives you some fairly good USGS/USDA aerial photography. - This "glorecords" thing looks pretty kickass. I didn't know I could get survey maps from, like, 1818... although it does want township numbers for input. I could, uh, use county ARCGIS platforms to get those, I think. Very useful, and will keep in my pocket. Frankly, I think it is probably high time that I and some other geo-nerds wrote some sort of comprehensive guide to stuff like this (I don't know how I found out about county ARCGIS searches or TopoView or any of this stuff, for example). jp×g 23:04, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- Well, I'll be damned, I found a survey of Grassy Island, Mamajuda Island, and Mud Island from 1845. Based! jp×g 23:12, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- And another.
- Ribbon farms and... Zug Island, is that you?
- Fox Island and Stony Island...
- North end of Grosse Ile.
- Mysterious lost islands north of Belle Isle.
- The base map for EarthExplorer is copyrighted (I think), but the downloadable maps are categorized. To see the full EarthExplorer site, register for a free account. Virtually all of them get the PD tags for USGS or FSA. The maps can be downloaded individually or in a group with the BDA software tool. When you run a search for an area (such as "map view" of whatever is on your screen) there are a large list of types of photos to select on the second tab, "Data Sets". The copyrighted ones are specifically listed as being "private" in origin and I haven't seen any of them show up so far. Nearly all US images in the site appear to be under "Aerial Imagery" under either "Aerial Photo Single Frames", "High Resolution Orthoimagery", which get the USGS tag, or the three acronyms underneath "High Resolution Orthoimagery", NAIP, NHAP, and NAPP, which get the FSA tag. The highest resolution images appear to be under "High Resolution Orthoimagery" and the most recent NAIP year. For examples see my commons uploads. Some of the "medium resolution" Aerial Photo Single Frames downloads come directly in .tif format, so they can be uploaded to commons using url2commons in around a minute or less. Nearly all of the downloads are compressed into different file formats, so url2commons isn't an option. The formats may require 7-zip to open. Then after extracting them, I converted them to .jpg because sometimes commons is wonky with larger tifs. GIMP is able to convert them to jpgs with (supposedly) 100% quality. Also it reduces the upload time, although it typically still takes hours anyway.
- Some of the colored EarthExplorer tifs have an extra channel for the color of water. This will probably prevent loading or look weird in image viewing applications. If I choose the bottom option on the opening prompt on GIMP (to process the channel as an extra channel) and then extract it to .jpg it looks normal in the .jpg, even if it appears off-color in GIMP.
- The ag imagery is helpful because there are many different years of images. Most are taken with ordinary visible light colors, but some use color-infrared film. For islands which change in form over the years, multiple images can be put side-to-side to show the changes. The CSS image crop template doesn't work with many multi-image templates, but it works with float_begin & float_end. If the css image crop template displays white instead of the image and there is no good explanation for it, then I scale the image width to |bSize = 1/2 of the attributed pixels in the jpeg. If that doesn't work, I add five or ten more pixels to it and it works.
- Google Earth's "historical imagery" seems to be a composite of some of these federal projects, given the years involved.
- I like the county gis survey maps too. They (I think?) are usually public domain because they are old enough and published without a copyright. The survey tags from the GLO site get PD-USGov because there us no agency tag for GLO on commons. I've also used county gis to get the township and range to feed into GLO.
- It is possible to convert the pdf surveys to .tif with online tools. Then when it starts to download the file, you can copy the download url to urltocommons and eventually cancel your own download. Possibly not all tools work out this way, but sejda works. Because of multi-page pdfs, it may be necessary to split out a single page of the pdf using one of the split pdf tools online which accepts pdfs from directly from urls.
- For NASA I've used Gateway to Astronaut Photography, searching by name or using the map. The photo numbers are consecutive. When I find the right location I work my way up and down numerically in the URL bar to find nearby pictures. The NASA photos come as JPGs, so I can enter the url for the highest resolution download directly into url2commons without needing to download them first.
- The lost islands may have become dredging casualties.
- If you or others write a guide, I'm interested in reading it.--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 00:57, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
