Category templates
Save yourself a little trouble— use {{Category U.S. State elections by year}} on pages like Category:California elections, 1884.—GoldRingChip 00:32, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- And when you do, you can delete all other categories on the page. See this edit. It's a new version of the template, which was dramatically modified on March 5, 2013.—GoldRingChip 12:01, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- Is it necessary to delete the other categories (can I leave if it is quicker to do so). I noticed an earlier version if the template just said "elections by year" although it was obviously just for (US) states. Hugo999 (talk) 12:15, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, you ought to delete all the other categories. This template sets the correct (or standard, depending on how you look at it) sort order for the categories. Leaving duplicates would change that. Also- if the template were modified because new categories were created, then there would be a problem. The only cases in which I've left categories has been when there are (and should be) additional categories, such as in Category:Hawaii elections, 2008, which is a subcategory of Category:2008 elections in Oceania.—GoldRingChip 14:15, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Turkey and the Ottoman Empire
Turkey was NOT a recognized subdivion of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey was a synonym for the Ottoman Empire. I have the 1912 Farm Journal Complete Atlas of The World. On p. 136-137 it shows "turkey" on its map of Europe. The borders it shows for Turkey are the pre-Balkan War boundaries of the Ottoman Empire, stretching to the Adriatic Sea, taking in Saloniki, and stopping just short of Larissa and taking in Arta. On p. 166 we see a map showing Turkey going to the Persian Gulf. Turkey is the Ottoman Empire, not a subdivision of it.John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:46, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
There is a distinction made between Ottoman Turks and other inhabitants of the Ottoman Empire; primarily an ethnic and linguistic group. But just as Ethnic Germans can mean people in the Baltic countries or Russia, there is still a home area of Germany, though with boundaries which have changed over time. Hugo999 (talk) 05:28, 15 June 2013 (UTC)
- While it is true that there is a dintinction in ethnic terms between the Turks and other groups in the Ottoman Empire, there was not a geographical area called "Turkey". We are discussing geography, not ethnicity.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:56, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

1939 establishments in Moldova
It is unclear if you think Category:1939 establishments in Moldova should cover the current boundaries of Moldova or the 1939 boundaries, which may or may not overlap at all. If you think it should cover the current boundaries, do you then think we should not categorize things formed in the Moldavian ASSR not within the current boundaries of Moldova at all, or how would you name such. We do have Category:1938 establishments in the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic which uses the 1938 boundaries.John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:37, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
Redundant category
Hi I noted that you are the creator of Category:1910 awards. I think the scope of this and category Category:Awards established in 1910 are overlapping and probably the later well covers the scope. What do you think? The Legend of Zorro 10:36, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
I created Category:1910 awards for the second Grey Cup which was established in 1909. Hence the Grey Cup could be in the category Category:Awards established in 1909 which could be a subcategory of the category Category:1909 awards, but not the other way round as you suggest. Each Grey Cup article is about a particular year. Eg 100th Grey Cup (of 2012) could be a subcategory of Category:2012 awards (though it is not) but could not be a subcategory of Category:Awards established in 2012. There are various subcategories of say Category:1978 awards eg Category:1978 music awards which includes 1978 Grammy Awards; but the first Grammy awards were in 1959. Hugo999 (talk) 11:17, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
Hi I had previously heard of the Grammy but sadly not about the Grey Cup. But in either way the thing is a bit chaotic. For example we do not have any article like 1917 Nobel Prize but we have 1917 Pulitzer Prize. Either way it seems to me over categorization. Isn't it? And Re: Reply here I have watchlisted your page. The Legend of Zorro 13:11, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
An article like 2007 Grammy Awards is categorised in Category:2007 music awards which is a subcategory of both Category:2007 in music and Category:2007 awards (which is an overall category for awards in 2007 ie books, films, music, television etc). Many awards like Nobel prizes or book awards do not have an article about each annual ceremony, but the award is covered in the article about a book or person, and in an overall list of the annual award recipients. Hence there is a category tree of annual awards in various categories. There is an separate category tree of awards established in a particular year which includes a variety of establishments and disestablishments eg of companies and railway lines, see Category:2012 establishments and Category:2012 disestablishments. So there are two entirely separate category trees containing Category:1910 awards and Category:Awards established in 1910; and the two categories could not be amalgamated. Ulster Defence Regiment - Militia categories
Hugo would you be kind enough to join me at the Talk:Ulster Defence Regiment so we can discuss the removed militia categories from all of the articles about the regiment. I note your comments but see other categories repeated and wonder why you think these alone should be reserved for the parent article. I suggest the article's own talk page because there are other contributors and we could all, possibly learn something. SonofSetanta (talk) 07:12, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
Yes, will discuss at the talk page. My object is to have the main category Category:Ulster Defence Regiment in the category Category:Militias in Europe (but not Category:Militias as well) rather than having each individual battalion in the category, to the extent that about half of the category content was articles about UDR battalions! Have not done them all yet. The same could apply to and other categories that the battalion articles are in; put the main category only in some of these categories. Likwise also Category:Defunct Irish regiments of the British Army as the UDR has now been amalgamated out of existence. PS: But does thus mean that every territorial regiment of the British Army should be regarded as “Militia”. Hugo999 (talk) 10:38, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- I need to ask, just out of curiosity - why remove The Troubles category from the individual UDR battalion records? SonofSetanta (talk) 08:33, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- Because the whole category is a subcategory of Category:The Troubles (Northern Ireland) (like the Category:Royal Ulster Constabulary) hence all their subcategory articles do not need to be in the main category also (apart from the main article on the RUC and the UDR). Hugo999 (talk) 12:18, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- I see. Actually I think I had worked that out after I submitted the question. It's a case of: let's not overload the categories, and I agree. SonofSetanta (talk) 12:31, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
Ulster Special Constabulary
Thanks for doing that. There is an argument that they were a militia being as the C and C1 specials were effectively organised into brigades, weren't uniformed, and were all ex-servicemen. Certainly only the B Special class in Belfast did real police work, the rest were used as armed troops. Is it worth thinking about? SonofSetanta (talk) 08:21, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

- Exactly. I was thinking that somebody needs to point you to WP:AGF, but I see that you are a sysop, so you would be most aware of this concept. The other thought that I have is that one should always check another user's edit count before making allegations, but given that you yourself have a six-figure count, this particular argument has just been weakened. Hugo999 has been around for over 200,000 edits and he will know that one does not go canvassing. 1943 election
Hi Hugo, thanks for this addition to the article. Two issues, though. You have inserted the additional information between the full stop of what was previously there and the reference that referred to the previous content. The way it now reads is that the reference refers to the two candidates who got returned unopposed, which is obviously not the case. Could you please:
- add new content after existing references, and
- state your sources?
It would be great if you could go back to your edits from yesterday. If the sources are all the same for the various edits, but you don't know how to format them, can I suggest the following?
- add the source to the 1943 election article
- let me format it
- then copy the source to the other articles, adjusting page numbers where necessary.
Thanks! Schwede66 00:57, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- Re unopposed seats in elections Wilson’s Parliamentary Record gave the number of unopposed seats, in the table of numbers of electors voting; 1985 page 285 for 1879 (14 seats) and page 286 for the rest ie 1881 to 1943(1881 & 1884 - 11; 1887 = 5, 1890=6, 1893 & 1899 = 3,1911 & 1922 & 1925 = 1, 1931 = 4, 1943 = 2. For some reason my Wilson refs were showing an error connected with the access date in new articles on MLCs. For 1943 the two unopposed seats were named in the Bay of Plenty Beacon of 24 September in “Tomorrows’ Election” page 4. Hugo999 (talk) 01:24, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
PS re 1911 election, Wilson has one uncontested seat but the table shows both Eastern Maori and Gisborne as uncontested.Hugo999 (talk) 01:51, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- Do you copy the Wilson refs from your sandbox? If yes, then I've fixed the problem; the accessdate parameter should only be used when a URL is also provided. The referencing templates have got a lot more clever recently and they pick up everything that isn't quite right. Schwede66 18:13, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- The Wilson refs were copied from an existing page where the ref worked OK, but I have noticed that even making an amendment to a page with an existing Wilson ref that it then produces an error message: it almost seems worth avoiding these ref templates if they suddenly produce error messages when somebody tinkers with them! It may be strictly accurate to say he was a lawyer in Greymouth (for a particular period) but I do not think it is true or fair to say it the way you have. I am pretty sure his last 40 years were based in Wadestown Wellington (and perhaps maintain more than a loose link with a Greymouth legal practice) but there must be some way to confirm that - try his 1968 autobiography or please remove Greymouth. Cheers, Eddaido (talk) 00:04, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
I have modified it to "then" ie soon after graduation he was a lawyer in Greymouth. I suppose he probably lived there until 1928 when he stood for election for the last time (then got the 1931 War Pensions job in Wellington). He had a see-saw battle with Labour for the seat, like Wairarapa when the seat went between Liberal and Reform (Marryat Hornsby & Buchanan; then McDonald & McLeod). Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Geoffrey Cox (journalist) may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s and 1 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Requesting your opinion
Hi. You've participated in the editing of New England Sports Network. Can you offer your opinion about the inclusion of material in an article that's taking place in this consensus discussion, in which the reliability of that source is one of the issues that was raised (among others)? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 18:21, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

If you go to the article - Seismic fault - it suggests that they are active faults There is nothing in the Darling Fault article to say that it is seismic or active South West Seismic Zone is another kettle of fish and not necessarily related Not sure how you decided on the placement of that link between Darling and Seismic...

As for the Sunda one - that is Indian Ocean/Indonesia - they need their own - 'Asia' is too large. cheers. satusuro 13:09, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
Southeast Asia could be split from Asia, but it would need Category:Geology of Southeast Asia as well as Category:Geography of Southeast Asia, so will do that first. Hugo999 (talk) 21:20, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
