Hi Elliot Your changes to Sydney United Page to reinstate wording is uncalled for as the previous text and comments are untrue and based on media propaganda. Seems a little unfair that you reinstate the text but have no idea how damaging it actually is?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.101.122.28 (talk) 22:51, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Raised beach, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Anthropogenic. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

This. You are currently causing a lot of cleanup work for other people. We do not link common English words that a reasonable English speaker would speak, and we don't generally link commonly known countries such as Canada, United States etc. Additionally we generally only link a term once in an article, not every time we have it. Hi, not sure if I'm replying right, apologies. I reviewed the two links by Moxy, and I will be much more careful with what I link when editing articles. I'm genuinely very sorry for all the cleanup work I've caused, I got a bit overexcited about what I thought was helping (I realize now that it wasn't, and was just creating more work). Again, I'm sorry, and I thank you both for bringing this to my attention. I hope y'all both have a wonderful day, or afternoon, or night. HeyElliott (talk) 17:56, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Two things

[edit]

Hi, and thanks for your intention to improve Wikipedia.

Two things, however:

1) Please provide at least brief edit-comments for your edits - I see you have habitually not provided any. This flashes all sorts of red warning lights for other editors who will naturally suspect at best inexperienced editing, at worst vandalism.

2) There is no point replacing established wikilinks which happen to redirect, by piping them to their redirect targets. The tiny optimisation doesn't help readers; and quite often it's actually wrong - a link may be to a section or anchor within the target article, rather than to the top of the article, so it's wisest and best just to leave these things alone.

All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:07, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Chiswick Chap
Hi Chiswick! Thank you so much for your message.
As for 1 - I will absolutely start providing them, thank you so much for letting me know. For 2, I am aware of that one and try to avoid doing that, however, (after making sure I know what section it's going to), fix it if the spelling is wrong. Is that alright, or should I stop doing that, too? (Honest question, sorry if that comes off as rude!).
Thanks so much, I hope you're having a wonderful day. HeyElliott (talk) 18:10, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Spelling being wrong being, not an alternative spelling, but a flat out typo. HeyElliott (talk) 18:10, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wrong spelling of course, just mark the edit comment "spelling" or even "sp". Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:19, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

More than one way to skin a cat

[edit]

Hello, HeyElliott, I noted some of your edits from my watchlist. You put quotation marks around ref name, this is only necessary if the name is two words so “Quetzal 1964” but not necessary for Quetzal1964. It’s also not necessary to list the authors as first1, last1, this gets really tedious in multi authored refs, like some IUCN Red Data List accounts. What you have done isn’t wrong, just unnecessary. I am a believer in “leave well alone” rather than tinkering for tinkering’s sake. Quetzal1964 (talk) 09:19, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

 • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
 • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
 • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
 • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
 • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the template.

What are you doing to these reference fields? I don't see any errors, and Francis Sheppard is most definitely the author / editor of the relevant chapters. At a rough guess, I think I've cited the SOL at least 100 times over 30 GAs without any issue. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:43, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm sorry for any confusion. Taking a look at my edit that was reverted, here, and looking at references 4 and 8, it's giving an error that says " cite web: Empty citation (help): |author= has generic name (help)", due to the word "Editor" being in the author field. Since the text there was "F. H. W. Sheppard (General Editor)", I thought it was trying to say that he was just the editor, as does the links on those citations. Again, I'm genuinely sorry, I didn't mean to cause any trouble or confusion. If he's the author, too, I'll go ahead and edit the author field to say "F. H. W. Sheppard", just without "(General Editor)", since that was giving an error. HeyElliott (talk) 20:50, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, just when I saw a summary "fixed errors" and then recognised them as citations I put in (or probably put in), I got somewhat confused, and tried to guess what the fix was, before giving up and thinking some WP:BRD would do the trick. Which it has. I think later citations use the (possibly) more accurate editor1-last=Sheppard|editor1-first=F.H.W, which probably won't trip that up. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:03, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think that sounds fine too! Thank you for your kindness and discussing this with me. :) I hope you have a great day! HeyElliott (talk) 21:04, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Elliot, this policy is for "terms" NOT the names of people or places. Just leave them. Johnbod (talk) 18:09, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for reaching out to me. I'll make sure to not apply the lang template to names of people or places, I'm sorry about that. I (perhaps wrongfully?) assumed that not applying it to places meant cities, countries, that type of thing, and that it could be applied to things like museums themselves? HeyElliott (talk) 19:26, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It has, higher up: "...templates output text in italics for languages with Latin-based scripts, if plain text is required, such as for proper names, |italic=no or {} may be used: ...". I wouldn't use it for museums, nor do we normally do so, I think. Johnbod (talk) 02:38, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lang template

[edit]

Hi, the syntax of lang template is de (ISO-639 language code). IMHO deu is wrong. I even don't know, if de works. Grimes2 (talk) 09:22, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for reaching out to me! I was going off of the links section on the Template:Lang page, which says to format links like that. And reviewing the page as a whole, I do see that it recommends the shortest possible language tag is used, so that is my mistake and I apologize. In the future, I'll use de and other shorter language tags. HeyElliott (talk) 19:24, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, deu: Test works. I was confused, because de: Test displays "German-language text" on hover. Sorry. Grimes2 (talk) 19:54, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely no problem at all! I appreciate you letting me know about the shorter language tag thing, thank you! I hope you have a great day! HeyElliott (talk) 19:56, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Short descriptions ending with "Manhattan, New York"

[edit]

Hi HeyElliott. I noticed that you changed a few short descriptions from "Office building in Manhattan, New York" to "Office building in Manhattan, New York, U.S.". I have removed "U.S." for now, as I do not agree that including "U.S." in these particular short descriptions is necessary. I normally would not mind specifying the country if the locale isn't very well known internationally (e.g. Pasadena, California, U.S.).

However, I do not think we should add "U.S." after "Manhattan, New York" for a couple reasons. NY is very well-known worldwide (particularly NYC), so I do not think adding "U.S." would aid navigation. Additionally, the short descriptions in question are already nearing the recommended limit of 40 characters that's outlined in WP:SDFORMAT. For instance, "Office building in Manhattan, New York" is already 38 characters long, and "Office skyscraper in Manhattan, New York" is exactly 40 characters. Unfortunately, if you added "U.S." to either of these descriptions, it would not show up in certain context; if a reader were searching the article on the mobile app, they might only see "Office building in Manhattan, New York, ...".

I've seen your other edits around, and I'd like to thank you for helping bring articles in line with the MOS; I only have a problem with these specific short descriptions. I hope this adequately explains why I have undone your edits to 1 Broadway and a few other pages. – Epicgenius (talk) 01:33, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for reaching out! That makes perfect sense, and I won't add U.S. to those types of short descriptions in the future. Thank you so much, and I hope you have a great day! HeyElliott (talk) 01:35, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you're concerned that "New York" might be taken to mean "New York state" and not "New York City", you could add "City" to "New York", but, as Epicgenius says, "Manhattan, New York" is pretty universally known. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:59, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"man"

[edit]

For future reference, the word "man" is actually a fun instance of shifting meanings. in old English, it used to mean the same thing that human does now, with wer- and wif- to distinguish the genders. Words like woman, man-made, and mankind have "man" in them because of that original meaning, and not because of the modern one. So it's already a gender-neutral word! ^_^ (this, funnily, is also where the word wer-wolf has its origin.)--Licks-rocks (talk) 12:32, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor about lang tags (sorry)

[edit]

Scrolling through your Talk page I see you've dealt with editors talking about your use of lang tags...unfortunately I have to add to this pile. I noticed your addition to Koinobori, but for some reason, we can't use lang inside of references, as it pollutes the resulting COinS metadata. Sorry they're such a mess, it's not exactly ideal, but it is what it is.—Ineffablebookkeeper (talk) (ping me!) 13:45, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for reaching out to me! No apology needed - it sucks to know I was messing up, but I appreciate people correcting me so I can fix my mistakes!
I was not aware of that, so thank you for letting me know! I'll make sure to not put lang inside references in the future. Thanks again, and have a great day! HeyElliott (talk) 18:44, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Names of Chinese books

[edit]

Hi, HeyElliott. I'm not sure it's appropriate to replace the italics around book titles like Yunjing with zh-Latn. The latter implies proper pinyin, which would include tone marks, e.g. Yùnjìng (falling tone mark over each syllable). But what is going on here is the default Wikipedia convention of romanizing Chinese names of books, people and places as pinyin minus tone marks (WP:PINYIN), as is common in English-language texts. Names of people (e.g. Xi Jinping) or places (e.g. Anyang) where this is done aren't italicized, of course, but Yunjing is because it's the title of a book – it isn't a proper foreign word. Hey Elliot recently there is a user Awater01 who has been making disruptive edits in Baruch Spinoza article. He seems to be a nationalistic Dutch who are mixing up things. It has been a stable version of article, but then he came up and started writing everyone was ignorant, wrong, undid many things. I alerted him to the fact he is misbehaving and should go to talk page firstly, and guess what? If said once he undid the stable version no one can change his version till there a consensus. What it is stupid. Could you to give him a notice of his misbehaviour? Hey Elliot, the user on Baruch Spinoza page who were engaged in edit warring last night was blocked, as we could expect since he was clearly not having a proper behaviour. However, I am not getting to get back to that stable version (he undid yours and my edits haha)... As you can see I am pretty new here, and he made two changes in a row then I am not getting to revert to the stable version like you did last night. Could you do that for me please? I hope when his block expires he can have a better behaviour :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by PepGuardi (talkcontribs) 19:56, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HeyElliott! I won't bother reverting, but London, United Kingdom is almost a tautology. Would you add US after, say, New York or Washington, D.C. ? Doug butler (talk) 02:06, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doug, thanks for reaching out!
I absolutely would, and do!, add U.S. to those. While most people know that those places are in the U.S. or the U.K., some don't, and there is absolutely no harm in clarifying. Also, while the place most often being referred to is London, or New York, there do exist other places named London and New York.
I hope you're having a great night! HeyElliott (talk) 02:13, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

US town and city infoboxes

[edit]

Hi there, thanks for replacing the "Official_name" parameter with simply "Name" in town and city infoboxes. That's something I too try to fix when I see one. Next step: for U.S. places, please use the format "City, State" for the "name" parameter. This is the preferred method as depicted in the WP:USCITIES guideline. Especially in New England, where town names are repeated in state after state, this will help avoid confusion. In other cases, such as "Merrimack", there is a major Merrimack River as well as a Merrimack County, so again, "City, State", keeps names clear at a glance. Changing a page

[edit]

Hi there, I wonder if you could help me with something ? on this site the description of Brighton. I’m wondering if you can help change this ? All descriptions state Brighton as a seaside resort ( which it is) but this needs to be changed to either city or city of Brighton and Hove. This could be added as a citation https://www.visitbrighton.com/ On the lead description it states “ Brighton is a seaside resort and one of the two main areas of the city of Brighton and Hove. But I feel this would be correct . “Brighton is a seaside resort and formally known as the city of Brighton and Hove. With this citation added on formally https://www.kingseducation.com/kings-life/10-fun-facts-about-brighton#:~:text=An%20important%20first%20fact%20is,two%20to%20be%20separate%20towns. I emailed the mayor of Brighton and have emails backs from the mayor and Brighton comms department in support of what I am saying. I have sent your email to our Comms department who will be able to help. Thank you for getting it right. Wikipedia often gets it wrong so it's good if someone who cares edits the pages.

Kindest regards

This has been an ongoing issue for many years, we used to regularly go in and edit the page but every time we did someone else would then edit it back to say resort or town. Although thankfully the Wikipedia page retains both of the external links I added to the council website and to our official tourism site: www.visitbrighton.com (http://www.visitbrighton.com/).   As our resources are stretched instead of undertaking the Sisyphean task of updating Wikipedia, we focus on optimising the content of our website to ensure that we appear as the top result for Brighton-related searches. Please see below a screenshot of the search results for ‘Brighton’ on Google which shows that our VisitBrighton website appears before the Wikipedia entry - the majority of people use Google for online searches rather than Bing (84% Google / 9% Bing).   Thank you, Charlotte

Sort keys

[edit]

Category short keys need to start with a capital letter; they are case sensitive, and they're all already capitalized, so if you lower-case one with, say, a leading "s" then it it will not sort as you probably expect with the other "S" items.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  01:03, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This edit seems to primarily (and needlessly) change citation formats in contradiction to WP:CITEVAR, and then your edit summary lists "MOS:CQ, WP:CITEVAR, ce" as justifications. Am I missing something? If the issue is with archive links, you may want to check our Template:Webarchive, which allows you to add an archived version of a source, while keeping the citation format unchanged. Swedish As A Foreign Language

[edit]

HeyElliott, how are you doing? I just read your edit on Swedish as a foreign language. May I know, are you Swedish? Your name seems so, I have been learning Swedish for the past 240 days and I have some questions. DonaldJacobb (talk) 15:50, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Donald! I'm not Swedish, sorry! And I only speak English.
Best of luck on learning Swedish, though! I think people who can speak multiple languages are awesome, it's such a cool skill. And welcome to Wikipedia!
Hope you have a great day! HeyElliott (talk) 18:56, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much, HeyElliott! I'm glad to be here. DonaldJacobb (talk) 23:30, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

5 nm Info Source

[edit]

I am a retired semiconductor engineer / executive. Where are you getting your info on 5 nm processes? 2600:8800:6E80:7F00:0:0:0:8663 (talk) 02:59, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, what page are you referring to? HeyElliott (talk) 03:00, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm referring to this section on the Wiki page "5 nm process" : The term "5 nm" has no relation to any actual physical feature (such as gate length, metal pitch or gate pitch) of the transistors being five nanometers in size. According to the projections contained in the 2021 update of the International Roadmap for Devices and Systems published by IEEE Standards Association Industry Connection, a "5 nm node is expected to have a contacted gate pitch of 51 nanometers and a tightest metal pitch of 30 nanometers".[3] However, in real world commercial practice, "5 nm" is used primarily as a marketing term by individual microchip manufacturers to refer to a new, improved generation of silicon semiconductor chips in terms of increased transistor density (i.e. a higher degree of miniaturization), increased speed and reduced power consumption compared to the previous 7 nm process.[4][5] 2600:8800:6E80:7F00:4DC7:FDFC:D2CA:DD54 (talk) 22:23, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, what edit of mine is the issue? I didn't change any information about 5 nm processes, just formatting and style issues of the article. HeyElliott (talk) 23:29, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, no problem. 2600:8800:6E80:7F00:B0E1:B215:3512:DB92 (talk) 15:29, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've added (I think) all the circa templates to the Ancient Egypt page, but since I don't have a programme and can't check every word on this page, I ask you to check if there's anything left, if you wish. JacktheBrown (talk) 23:23, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Greek railway station articles

[edit]

Athens Metro and Greek railway station articles, such as Piraeus station, have custom infobox headers: MOS:NOBOLD doesn't apply to custom headers, which usually follow the station signage "on the ground". A similar situation applies to South Korean railway station articles, which use . --Minoa (talk) 06:12, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
