Request to move deleted pages to personal page
Hello,
Can you move my deleted pages to my personal page?

My article deleted within 30 seconds of me posting it: Can i have a copy emailed to me?
Hi, my article on a website called requestit was deleted by the user Nakon literally 30 seconds after posting, i had just finished posting on the talk page that i am new to wikipedia and i dont know how to use tags or refrences, but he had no mercy for my hour worth of work. Can you please email me a copy of the deleted article? Thanks. Just as a sidenote, I don't see any other article stating why it should be on wikipedia, yet mine was deleted because i dod not state on it why it should be in an encyclopedia!! Can you please explain this to me? Thanks, my email address is ryanstewart456@live.co.uk —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryanmartin250 (talk • contribs) 21:49, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
- You can ask at WP:REFUND for a copy of the deleted page to be emailed to you by an administrator. Henrik hasn't edited Wikipedia in several months, so it's safe to say he probably won't see your message to him. Killiondude (talk) 16:52, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Article traffic statistics
Hi!
I was wondering if it is possible to use http://stats.grok.se/ to get statistcs for Wiktionary. I've tried to use for example http://stats.grok.se/pt.wikt/201006/Special:Recentchanges, but it didn't work. What code should I use in the url?
I would be good to have an additional field to select the wikiproject (besides the fields for languages and months). Helder (talk) 19:17, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

- I don't think the problem is in Henrik's tool, but due to lack of input data. He gets the data from http://dammit.lt/wikistats/, (provided by Domas Mituzas) and as you can see, a lot of data is missing here for the last few days. WHO reads, not just HOW MANY
Hi Henrik. Just wondering whether Wikipedia stores and shares data on WHO is reading a particular article, such as mine about Bloom Brothers Department Stores, a defunct chain about which I'm gratified (to say the least) to know that about 200 people a month read. Where do my readers live, for example?71.225.144.64 (talk) 19:13, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- None of us have any idea. harej 06:11, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- The only way to get that information would be to passively track the IP addresses of readers (which we don't), and then to search the archives at WHOIS in order to see the physical address registered to any given IP. However, while this is perfectly legal for a private individual to do, if a company or organization used their information to compile a comprehensive list of that data and then publicly shared said data, it would be a felony as well as a gross invasion of privacy and a violation of individual user's constitutional rights (if U.S. citizens). Short and Sweet: no, it's not possible. Cwill151 (talk) 16:41, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Web Traffic Calculator
Henrik, I recently used your beta program to track the web traffic on the page Omar al-Bashir and I noticed something odd: In the banner of the count itself, the program read, "Omar_al-Bashir has been viewed 1405 times in 201007". What is "201007"?
As well, in the graphical distribution, the x-axis seems to have no value other than a repeated series of 0's, what value is it supposed to represent? Don't get me wrong, I love the program itself but there just seem to be a few discrepancies, although I could simply be misreading it. Anyway, thank you for your time. Cwill151 (talk) 16:20, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- 201007 means "2010 07", or July 2010. The repeated series of 0's represent that the page was not viewed during that timeframe. Obviously this is incorrect, but there seems to have been a few glitches lately in the program. I'm here because I was about to post a note that a lot of my articles seem to have suddenly bottomed out while they were at DYK. Nomader (Talk) 00:36, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Indicating edits on page views
Your page view reports are interesting. They can be made more useful, if the edits are flagged for a day with a symbol on the x axis. It will help get an account of real reader views excluding editors.--Arjunaraoc (talk) 09:50, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
- Is it even possible to differentiate between editors and readers? And why shouldn't editors be counted as readers? On days when an article is stable, I would suggest looking at the stats then. – Kerαunoςcopia◁galaxies 18:04, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
- For young encyclopaedias, the distinction will be useful to gauge the reader interest as the articles are being enhanced(edited), as it may be a very long time for the article to stabilize. A reader page views table/chart excluding 2 times the edits from the total page views also will be useful. Arjunaraoc (talk) 14:18, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
"This is very much a beta service and may DISAPPEAR or change at any time." I just thought I'd stop by and express my adoration of page view statistics. I'm currently using it to try and figure out why a certain page I helped create (and am very much interested in getting out to the world) did something so right: it suddenly got ten times more page views one Sunday.
-Tesseract2 (talk) 14:35, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
- It might have been linked externally on a highly viewed page, thus leading lots of people to Wikipedia. Or you can check the pageviews of pages that link to the article in question using Special:WhatLinksHere (to see if a featured article or something linked to it). Or it could have been a computing error, sometimes those happen in these stats figures. Killiondude (talk) 19:45, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

API for traffic statistics
Hi Henrik,
My name is Rosta Farzan. I am a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University. I was wondering if you have any API of your traffic statistics tool which provides the same information in any machine readable format or just plain text instead of visual representation. I do appreciate if you could let me know about that. You can contact me at rfarzan@cs.cmu.edu
Regards, Rostaf (talk) 21:16, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hello Rosta. There's no API, but the information Henrik uses is from http://dammit.lt/wikistats/. You might be interested in the attempt I made at writing an FAQ page for Henrik's tool here. There's also some information about the information provided from dammit.lt. You can also see JSON formatted data of the traffic stats by prepending /json/ to the URL like so: http://stats.grok.se/json/en/200910/Michael_Jackson. Killiondude (talk) 21:24, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Philanthropy article monitoring
This is a fantastic service you are doing—keep it up!!!
1) Why do some days have no recorded hits, when all other days have over 2,000? Seems odd that high traffic would reduce to zero any day. Is there a minimum threshold, or are some days simply not monitored?
2) I notice the rank of the article hasn't changed in two years, and doesn't vary with the hit-count. How can I find the current rank?
Many thanks,

- Yes, it seems the stats-tool file server fills up with too many data records and stops collecting data. This seems to happen after a major popular event, such as the premiere of one of those vampire films in the series since Twilight (2008 film) or perhaps, for new film Inception (2010 film). When anyone knows the expected date for a new blockbuster film, then please warn Henrik to prepare for the stats tool to die during the premiere of such films, at least I think that is what happens. Top articles of the month
The top results at the stat tool are the same regardless of the chosen month. I think that the text "Most viewed articles in 200912" should be "Most viewed articles since 200912". It's fine having a global data, but could you also provide the top for each month (or other time aggrupation you may prefer)? Sometimes you wish to restrict to get "a recent top". Bubble Thing
Dear Hendrick,
I am the inventor of the Bubble Thing, the well-known toy which started the giant bubble sport in 1984. You can see it at my web site http://bubblething.com. Also on YouTube under search word "Bubble Thing". Some months ago, I edited the "Soap Bubble" article in wikipedia to reflect all this, and you approved it. It stayed for some time, and now I see that someone has removed it, probably one of my upstart competitors. Could you please restore this? I can't seem to find it in the history.

Cumnulative hits a possibility?
Hello Henrik,
I greatly appreciate the Wkipedia article traffic statistics page at http://stats.grok.se/. Thanks for this useful service!
I have one request, and one question:
1) Would it be possible to create options to display cumulative traffic statistics in your pull-down date menu (i.e., total hits since creation; all of 2008, 2009, etc.)?
2) Does the number of hits shown also reflect page views by 'bots and spiders, or real people reading a given page?
Thanks in advance, and keep up the great work!
Dave Brown dbrown@brocku.ca 139.57.145.155 (talk) 17:04, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- You can view cumulative hits for the page, yes. Please see the FAQ page to learn how to manipulate the URL to do so. Killiondude (talk) 22:31, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Autobiography question
A couple months ago I noticed my full name was in Wikipedia along with a statement thatI was an American engineer. How did that happen?
There was also an invitation to submit additional information. So, an article was recently submitted.
The stats page now shows 257 visits, most appearing to be before the article was submitted. Is that an error, or were there visits to the previous name and occupation listing?
I am a novice at the Wiki format What needs to be done to remove the Unreviewed Article Tag? User:luceyg (I think) Luceyg (talk) 20:08, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hello! It appears that Piszkosfred (talk · contribs) was the one who started the page. Regarding the hits the page received prior to it being created: yes, those are real "views" of the page before it was created. It didn't get very many in June, and none in July. If you could point to the place where you said you saw a few months ago that you were listed as an American engineer, I could show you who wrote that (by looking at the edit history) but it could by any number of wikipedians who edit the site.
Also, I've reviewed the article and it seems to be okay for Wikipedia and I've removed the tag at the top of the article. However, that doesn't mean the article can't go without improvements. It'd be nice to use inline citations that the software uses (See User:Chzz/help/refs-- I like how Chzz words his help documents-- and there's Help:Ref but that's a lengthy page) and more citations at specific parts in the article (where I added some [citation needed] tags).
Some reading material I strongly suggest you take a look at is WP:ASFAQ and WP:AUTO. Editing your own biography is not forbidden, but it is strongly discouraged. If you have any further questions, please ask me on my talk page or email me at KilliondudeWPgmail.com. Thanks. Killiondude (talk) 22:31, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Portal for hoaxes
Hello There!
My name is Salgado96, I'm 14 and I'm from Portugal. I love music so much, As you can see by my edits! Well, everybody knows that there is a lot of people who use Wikipedia to creat hoaxes about them selfs, most of them are depressed persons or have psico problems, I say that because I have a few friends who create them regulary. My idea is to create an especific portal for that kind of persons, called "Hoaxes Portal", where people can create articles about everything without needing references, verefication or external links. This way, we can provide the creating of hoaxes in the normal Wikipedia and give that kind of persons a personal space for them selfs. But I don't know how to creat it, and I was wondering if there's a chance for you to help me... :)
P.S: I ask for attention about this mesage! If this portal would be created, we could have a "clean encyclopedia". Please leave me a mesage on my talk page (click here). Thank you, Salgado96. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Salgado96 (talk • contribs) 03:20, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Another page statistics question
What does 200810 mean? The first two digits are evidently the year and from looking through the index of dates the last two range from 1 to 12 so must be the month. But why are the middle two digits only 7, 8, 9, 10? Very puzzling. RewlandUmmer (talk) 10:25, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Request to specify the date format in bracket 201009(yr-month) and so on. For a new user this is actually confusing. Can you delegate some of the page-stats upkeep work?
Hi Henrik, love the facility, and its continuous availability is becoming a must for WP. If it's a bore to add each month to the facility at the start of the month, I wonder whether it's possible to delegate this task. Thanks. Tony (talk) 06:10, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Why are Wikipedia's page view statistics not maintained by Wikipedia staff?
Henrik has been providing outstanding service in this area as a volunteer. However, this function is way too important for this organization to rely on one single individual.
Any thoughts? Ottawahitech (talk) 15:51, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- It seems like WMF staff are working to address this; see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Analytics_upgrade and http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/OWA_deployment. According to the second link, a new analytics tool could be launched in early October.
- Even if the staff didn't implement that project, however, a page view statistics tool is not dependent on Henrik. The underlying data is available from the Internet Archive, beginning at http://www.archive.org/details/wikipedia_visitor_stats_200712, and also at http://dammit.lt/wikistats/. Stats.grok.se– are all hits on a redirect counted?
Hi Henrik. I know the answer to this may depend on raw logs which you don't write, only process, but have you any idea if a hit on a redirect page that only results in a redirect (ie. not resulting in a rendering of the redirect page itself) actually produces a hit count? Many thanks, Trev M ~ 10:57, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
- When one navigates to a URL that redirects to another page, that hit is listed for the redirect page. So if Foo was a redirect (and it is), then any hits on that page will be listed as for that page, not the target. Killiondude (talk) 17:12, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- As suspected: thanks very much for confirmation. Trev M ~ 17:21, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- That doesn't seem clear to me. What I observe is that now traffic through a redirect counts as a view of the redirect and as a view of the target; views of the redirect itself do not count as a view of the target. 69.3.72.249 (talk) 01:13, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
- I think that's correct, 69.3.72.249. Viewing the redirect itself (achievable through a URL like http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Foo?redirect=no) registers as a view of that page and that page only. However, such hits are so infrequent as to be negligible. The vast majority of hits to redirects occur without those special parameters -- through a URL like http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Foo, i.e. Foo -- and register as views on both the redirect and the destination page. Emw (talk) 01:52, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
- That doesn't seem clear to me. What I observe is that now traffic through a redirect counts as a view of the redirect and as a view of the target; views of the redirect itself do not count as a view of the target. 69.3.72.249 (talk) 01:13, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Web traffic (yet again)
Hey Henrik,
Thanks for creating and designing the system to track wikipedia traffic numbers. I was looking through the traffic numbers for certain topics on the English language Wikipedia and noticed that for a few months in 2008 the user traffic to that page was 0. It does not seem to make sense to me that the page view for those months in 2008 would be 0. Is that possible or could it be a glitch in the tracking system?
Would appreciate it if you could get back to me.

Wikipedia article traffic statistics "temporarily unavailable"
For a couple of days now I have noticed this text when trying to obtain statistics: "stats.grok.se is currently being migrated to a new server. Some data may temporarily be unavailable"

Data for wikistats before 2010/04/01?
Hi, I've seen Wikistats at http://stats.grok.se/ . Great work! I was wondering if it is possible to get data of pageviews before 2010/04/01. Thanks! --phauly (talk) 08:03, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

- Yes, thanks for your answer! Sorry, I was not very precise in my question. I would like to get the raw data about pageviews. I've read that your visualization takes data from http://dammit.lt/wikistats/ but when I look into the archived raw data, I see that the oldest available dump is of April 2010, see http://dammit.lt/wikistats/archive/2010/04/ So I'm wondering if you make a local copy of the data released earlier and if it would be ok for you to share them. hi henrik, nice to tele-meet you. i have a couple of questions about your stats.grok.se site. i was wondering if you had time for a quick chat or a couple questions. if so, is there a channel i can find you on? thanks. --Parul Vora (talk) 20:15, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- Henrik hasn't edited since March, and may well not respond. Having built a tool at http://toolserver.org/~emw/wikistats/ that augments stats.grok.se by essentially piggy-backing off the data it provides, I have decent knowledge of Henrik's site. Perhaps you'd consider asking your questions here? Otherwise, if you'd like my input, I can be reached by email. Cheers, Emw (talk) 01:09, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia article traffic statistics
Beloved Henrik,
(seriously ;), as your program is great help in evaluating possible relevance of articles), I just now notice that the languages to be chosen by dropdown menue do not appear by alphabetical order [I just now was looking for Polish].
I think it might possibly not be too much of an effort to have preset English as-is, but to list everything else of the dropdown by alphabetical order. Thanks, Wolfgang, [w.] 15:20, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- The drop-down menu is roughly ordered by number of articles in the given language's version of Wikpedia. See http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias#All_Wikipedias_ordered_by_number_of_articles. Whether it's better to sort that way or alphabetically is an interesting design question: the former should be more convenient for most people, but the latter should leave most people not confused. Emw (talk) 16:16, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- I_STILL_DO think that alphabetical order would be preferable in such dropdown, believing that
(1) not-very-very-many people use this feature,
...but, mainly,
(2) those who ever DO would hardly be aware of ANY other 'ratings' to be regarded.
-- How should they ever know, unless being statisticians??? - But, do not mind, please. Best, [w.] 17:29, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

traffic counts
Hi Henrik, It seems to me that the Hebrew statistics aren't up to date. In most cases I get 12-2009 info, except if I ask for a specific article. e.g. [1] vs [2] (which was #40 in 12-2009). Also, the ranking per article is always the same as 12-2009. See [3] and [4], it can't be ranked 4th with ~1000 hits per month. And another question - Is that are way to get the hits data itself for an academic research? Thanks Liorkaplan (talk) 19:55, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
- The last time Henrik ran the query to come up with the "top hits" data was in 12-2009. It doesn't update automatically. Specific article hits per year are calculated automatically (adding all the sums from the source data). For the remainder of your answers, I think you'll find the FAQ useful. Killiondude (talk) 21:14, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
- Liorkaplan: While a ranking isn't currently available, you can get aggregate page view count (as well as average views per day and standard deviation in page views per day) over an any given date range at http://toolserver.org/~emw/wikistats/. For example: http://toolserver.org/~emw/wikistats/?p1=בן_גוריון&project=he&from=12/10/2007&to=10/30/2010&plot=1 has data on the page you asked about. (Apologies if that's not the correct one, I don't know any Hebrew.) Page view data is also available in tabular and .csv format there for your page of interest. Wikipedia article traffic statistics questions
Hello Ηenrik,
I'm researching the popularity of Wikipedia articles containing verious terms and I've come across your very useful page at http://stats.grok.se/. I've also perused at the raw statistics files available from there. I'd like to ask you about the meaning of the various fields in the files. E.g. the line
en.b Anatomy_and_Physiology_of_Animals/The_Skeleton 10 144185
I suppose 'en' refers to the language version, however I don't understand what the 'b' stands for. This pattern occurs in multiple lines with other letters following the language code. Do these letter correspond perhaps to other wikiprojects, such as wikibooks?
The last number (144185) must be the number of hits, but what does the previous number (10) stand for?
I'd like to be able to work with the raw data for reasons of speed and so as not to burden your server.
Best regards, Anthony J. Patrinos 10:48, 31 October 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Patrinos (talk • contribs)
- I assume you're asking about the files available at http://dammit.lt/wikistats/, which is what Henrik uses as the input data for stats.grok.se. In 'en.b', the 'b' stands for Wikibooks. The second-to-last number (10) refers to the number of hits, and I think the last number (144185) refers to the number of bytes transferred (i.e. page size * number of hits). Keep in mind that the data in any one of those files covers traffic for only one hour, as indicated in the name of the file.
- Because it offers raw data (in tabular and CSV format) for up to three articles at a time, the tool at http://toolserver.org/~emw/wikistats/ may be useful for your research. If you'd like to automate the process, you can manipulate a URL to get quicker access to traffic data in a format suitable for your own analysis. For example: http://toolserver.org/~emw/index.php?c=rawdata&m=rawdata&p1=Deval_Patrick&p2=Charles_D._Baker,_Jr.&p3=Tim_Cahill_%28politician%29&project=en&from=12/10/2007&to=10/30/2010. You can also see the plotted data, e.g. http://toolserver.org/~emw/wikistats/?p1=Deval_Patrick&p2=Tim_Cahill_%28politician%29&p3=Charles_D._Baker,_Jr.&project=en&from=12/10/2007&to=10/30/2010&plot=1. Emw (talk) 11:45, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- Emw: Thank you very much for the clarifications and the tips for the other tools. In terms of using the tools (your's and Henrik's), I was wondering what an appropriate use measure would be. I've automated the process with perl for using Henrik's tool with article titles I've retrieved using the Wikimeida API. However, the terms I'm searching for appear in about 14000 articles. Running my tool for one month takes about an hour. Would I be causing trouble if I ran it repeatedly over the next few days? This is actually the main reason that I'm considering using the raw pagecounts instead of the online tools.
Patrinos 17:20, 31 October 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Patrinos (talk • contribs)
- The raw data files from Domas are quite large -- averaging about 60 MB per file, where one file represents data for all public Wikimedia traffic for one hour. So processing all raw traffic data for, say, a year would require processing about 526 GB of data; for the ~3 years of all available traffic data, about 1.5 TB.
- Monthly page view data from stats.grok.se is available in machine-readable format at http://stats.grok.se/json/en/201010/Main_Page. If you were to pull in all available traffic data -- since 12/2007, or about 33 full months -- through Henrik's JSON service for your 14,000 articles of interest, it'd require sending about 462,000 HTTP requests.
- Because it gives data for arbitrary date ranges and supports comparing up to three pages at a time, toolserver.org/~emw/wikistats/ could make it so that you only need to do only about 4,700 HTTP requests. The data is available in JSON format through URLs of the form http://toolserver.org/~emw/index.php?c=wikistats&m=get_traffic_data&p1=Red&p2=Yellow&p3=Green&project=en&from=12/10/2007&to=10/30/2010. Presumably the data would also be easier to process on your end.
- To throttle the load on stats.grok.se, I'd recommend programming in some wait time between requests -- either between individual requests or between sets of requests. Emw (talk) 20:03, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for the monthly page view data, it will certainly save a great amount of bandwidth comapred to loading the full results page every time and parsing it on my side for getting just one number! I will probably not require more than a few months for my project, certainly not the entire available data set. It would be nice if this API were public. I will certainly consider the other solutions you propose. Thanks again!
- Patrinos 06:43, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- EMW: I've looked at the tool you proposed in your previous message and it seems almost perfect for the task at hand. However, I don't need the monthly(?) data, just the total number for the time period is sufficient. So the natural question to ask is whether an option is available to ask only for the total number of page views. This would definitely save a considerable amount of bandwidth.
- Best regards, Anthony
