Heathrow, London

Hi, Harrison49, noticed your additions to this article, particularly with reference to Great West Aerodrome. I propose adding a new section title Great West Aerodrome, plus a Template:Main pointing to the separate article that pre-dates the added aerodrome stuff. The aerodrome material should then be severely pruned in accordance with WP:SS (Summary style), allowing the bulk of the article to concentrate on the hamlet, rather than the aerodrome. I'm happy to start this, unless you are keen to take it on. Also, perhaps Philip Sherwood's 1999 book should be cited more to replace the much smaller and out-of-print 1990 edition. MTIA, (ex Heathrow/Sipson pupil) PeterWD (talk) 07:38, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the nod. I bought the Tim Sherwood 1999 book direct from Hounslow library, but only borrowed (and part scanned) the Philip Sherwood 1999 edition from there. I plan to put in the basic structure later tonight, but will delay doing the summary and cite changes until I get the PSherwood book on loan again. PS Just discovered that there's a 2009 edition, up from 129 to 192 pages, also "Around Heathrow: Past & Present" (2006) by same author, but Hounslow library only has one reference copy of latter, so can't borrow; will investigate. PeterWD (talk) 18:58, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Update. Managed to borrow Sherwood 2006 and 2009 books today. Heathrow 2000 Years actually has 160 numbered pages, not 192 reported by Amazon. Around Heathrow is mostly a picture book, 128 pages, 2 photos per page, but often 6 lines of text in caption. 14+ pages on Heathrow, 26 on Bath Road and Longford, 22 on Harmondsworth & Sipson, 34 on Harlington, 26 on Hayes. I'll continue to review Great West text, then summarise it to replace stuff in Heathrow hamlet article. PeterWD (talk) 21:01, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
New problem discovered. I traced back a number of links via "What links here", and only a few of the 57 links are intended for the hamlet. All the others are trying to link to modern Heathrow, ie the airport. I recommend that we move the article to "Heathrow (hamlet)", then make "Heathrow, London" a redirect pointing to the airport. We then just need to tweak the few articles that should point to the hamlet. Another future exercise might be to split out the history stuff from Heathrow airport to a new article "Heathrow Airport history" or some such. What do you think? PeterWD (talk) 22:04, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your prompt actions. I'm now concerned that the Hillingdon borough page links to the hamlet page as if it were a current district - surely that should be the airport. Should any link to Heathrow hamlet come under historic districts? Perhaps the airport page is the root problem - it says that it comes under Hounslow council, but it should be Hillingdon. That was stated to me by the local studies librarian at Hounslow library about two months ago - maps there show that Hounslow borough is south of the A30, at Hatton Cross at least. PeterWD (talk) 12:55, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for latest reply - while we're both active at same time, I'll hold off to prevent edit conflicts. A quick bumble around seems to confirm that the airport is within Hillingdon. The map on the airport page also shows that, though unfamiliar readers might not be able to locate the airport when clicking on the map anyway. If you wish to edit airport page, go ahead, otherwise I'll do it later. Not sure what source to cite, to avoid anti-vandal action. Also note that the link to the hamlet needs tweak, it still says "Heathrow, London". PeterWD (talk) 13:42, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for updated info; unfortunately, I have never had any interest in WDYK, so I have only now checked your Heathrow 'hook'. It references the RAeS stuff, that I wiped off the page as the first and most obvious candidate for excess info about the hamlet, rather than the airfield. Perhaps it needs to be briefly reinstated to avoid problems from the WDYK. Sorry I hadn't thought to investigate and report on that. PeterWD (talk) 08:58, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

RAF Coastal Command during World War II

Aside from some information on the Bay of Biscay offensives, I think the thing is largely complete, or at least reaching a size which does not permit more detail. Can you run over it and sea if it reaches GA requirements. Dapi89 (talk) 18:45, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Please. You could start when ever you're ready. I am going to start another article to deal with the bay offensives, so the info in this one will be the basics. I'm saving all the detail for the spin off. Dapi89 (talk) 21:20, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
I probably will complete it next week. I wasn't going to, but I think I will have to add the MTO and MET to the article, even though it was not that notable. Dapi89 (talk) 21:26, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
I think the article is complete. I added another section which covers other theatres, though the info there is next to nothing. I think it might be ready for review. Dapi89 (talk) 18:36, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
Done. Tag added. Dapi89 (talk) 10:58, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Done. Dapi89 (talk) 18:55, 31 May 2011 (UTC) Belated thanks. Dapi89 (talk) 20:56, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

I've put the article on hold for seven days to allow folks to address the issues I've brought up. Feel free to contact me on my talk page, or here with any concerns, and let me know one of those places when the issues have been addressed. If I may suggest that you strike out, check mark, or otherwise mark the items I've detailed, that will make it possible for me to see what's been addressed, and you can keep track of what's been done and what still needs to be worked on. DYK nomination of HD 154672

Hi, I added a second article to the hook your previously reviewed on HD 154672 b. Can you verify it as well? --Starstriker7(Talk) 22:52, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Hey, you'd probably be OK with a resolution of about 200px there. The previous resolution was a bit too big, but the 125px version is so small you can barely read the writing (at least on my crappy screen). Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:55, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Is it possible...

... to remove Glossary of association football terms from DYK's P2 until such a time that the image it was nominated with can go with it? It's quite important since the hook depends on the visual aid of the image to make it more easily understood? The Rambling Man (talk) 21:23, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Titanic Musicians' Memorial, Southampton

Hi Harrison, just wanted to let you know that I had to bring the nom for Titanic Musicians' Memorial, Southampton back from Prep. ALT1 may not be factually accurate, as it is not definite what they were playing as the Titanic sank. If you would like to weigh in at T:TDYK, it would be greatly appreciated. DYK Hooks for June 5th

Hi Harrison. Not to overly pressure you, but I have noticed that there are 3 hooks scheduled to be featured on June 5th but seem to have been ignored. Thanks. Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:45, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

Let's see... Queue 6 (which I'll count as the same as Prep 3, since it's empty) is scheduled for June 4th at 9:15 UTC. We are at 8 hour cycles right now, so Prep 4 would be at 16:15 UTC and Prep 1 would be at 00:15 UTC. Prep 1 and Prep 2 could be used for the June 5th articles, but you should be careful to select times where the people who are probably most interested would be awake (i.e. don't put Tunbridge Wells Cricket Week on for midnight UTC). If I were to suggest, I'd say put Tunbridge Wells Cricket Week, Sie werden euch in den Bann tun, BWV 183 in Prep 2. The Badai set might work in Prep 1 as it would be of most interest to people in Asia. Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:59, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
Looks good. Thanks. Crisco 1492 (talk) 16:15, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Hillingdon Primary Care Trust requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. ConcernedVancouverite (talk) 22:00, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Alt text for images

Hi, Harrison49, I've just been through the DYK prep sets either making the alt text for the images descriptive or adding text for the two that had no alt. I know that it's already a major task composing sets, but could I ask you to add checking the alt text to your checklist (see WP:ALT)? Thanks, Mikenorton (talk) 18:23, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

It only gets read by a screen reader if it has the alt= in front, otherwise it just reads the image file name, which is rarely of much help. I only found out about this after I did my first DYK review and I failed to check out the image, including the lack of alt text and another experienced reviewer picked me up on it. Mikenorton (talk) 19:11, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
I think that you're mixing up 'rollover text' which appears when the cursor is over the image, and 'alt text' which is there for users that can't see the images either through visual impairment or because images are turned off in their browser. The alt text is intended to give the user some idea what the image contains. That makes it more difficult to check, you have to go into edit mode to see if it's there. Mikenorton (talk) 19:39, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Please be more careful

Hi,

Can you please take more care when moving DYK to the prep area. A bowl of strawberries for you!

Hi there Harrison49, thanks very much for your work on Ruislip-Northwood Urban District which has now be promoted to GA status. Please accept this well earned bowl of healthy strawberries! Good Article promotion

Congratulations!
Thanks for all the work you did in making Ruislip-Northwood Urban District a certified "Good Article"! Your work is much appreciated. In addition to the lovely strawberries, here's a rather non-morbid-looking part of a crematorium in Breakspear for you.

In the spirit of celebration, you may wish to review one of the Good Article nominees that someone else nominated, as there is currently a backlog, and any help is appreciated. All the best, – Quadell (talk)

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their September 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy editing backlog. The drive will begin on September 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on September 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles in the backlog, as we want to copy edit as many of those as possible. Please consider copy editing an article that was tagged in 2010. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". See you at the drive! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

Your rollback request

Hello Harrison49, I have granted rollback rights to your account in accordance with your request. Please be aware that rollback should be used to revert vandalism/spam/blatantly unconstructive edits, and that using it to revert anything else (such as by revert-warring or reverting edits you disagree with) can lead to it being removed from your account...sometimes without any warning, depending on the admin who becomes aware of any misuse. If you think an edit should require a reason for reverting, then don't use rollback and instead, use a manual edit summary. For practice, you may wish to see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback.
