Marksman
[edit]I have just created a new article On Mark Marksman appreciate you expert input. MilborneOne (talk) 18:16, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Updated as suggested - you may be like to check the operational history section which has been added by another user. MilborneOne (talk) 18:26, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- You may also be interested in On Mark Engineering. It needs filling out a lot more and in particular needs references and citation. MilborneOne (talk) 19:41, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
Specs
[edit]I believe {{aircraft specifications}} came before {{aerospecs}}, just my guess. You can not mix the parameters. I suggest copy the {{aircraft specifications}} from the main A-26 article into a new subpage to your User account... double click on User:PeterWD/Sandbox and insert the copy specs... then change all the specs that is needed for Marksman aircraft. Once you got it the way you want, then copy the "new" specs, delete the old Marksman specs ,and insert the "new" specs.
Visit Template:Aircraft specification and Template:Aerospecs for the full details on each template. I have not studied either one to know all the differences yet. Cheers, Lance... LanceBarber (talk) 05:14, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- All newly created aircraft articles are now using {{aerospecs}} as the prefered format. MilborneOne (talk) 08:07, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Catalina
[edit]Looks good just some other suggestions - you dont need the navboxes on what is a related article and I think you only need the Lists of military aircraft and can loose the other cats. It needs a few more refs as it may be considered just a copy of the catalina society website! Perhaps consider splitting serial/reg into Original Serial Number and Current or displayed Serial Number of Registration or something like that. Perhaps we need to ref some of the Wreck and Relics books and Andy Mardens US preserved aircraft or similar. Ive turned off the List cat temporary as your sandbox appears in all the cats! MilborneOne (talk) 18:11, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for that - I'll go and plan some changes - good job I asked. PeterWD (talk) 23:38, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Bay of Pigs
[edit]I received your earlier e-mail direct from WikiPedia, but the return address apparently had an error preventing my response from reaching you. Thank you for providing the more complete explanation on my talk page. I'm not certain I have much more of interest to you. Admiral Dennison's account was not a book, but an article in the periodical Proceedings of the United States Naval Institute. As I recall, the article was based on a tape-recorded oral history project the Institute undertook decades ago to preserve recollections of senior naval officers regarding events of historical significance which might otherwise be clouded by military secrecy and political slant of contemporary press releases.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the publication available for reference, but you might find a collection of the United States Naval Institute Proceedings available in a comprehensive military history library. Alternatively, you may contact the Institute directly concerning availability of their oral history recordings.
Your references appear to be based on the observations of lower ranking officers; and, as a general rule, I believe lower ranking officers were often in positions to better observe (and report with less embellishment) what truly happened as opposed to what was intended. (My college room-mate became an A-6 pilot in Vietnam who flew missions where he found no targets and jettisoned his ordnance over the Tonkin Gulf; but his squadron CO would rewrite his mission reports to indicate dropping the bombs in locations where secondary explosions were observed.) (M.15)2
[edit]We have been working simultaneously on article on this one, though I named mine Miles M.15 T.1/37 aftersome agonising. By the look of it, you have the better sources but I've written more on development, partly as a comparison with the Magister. Since you also got in 10 min before me, I'm happy to remove my article (once I've found out how to do this: MilbourneOne will know), but would suggest basing the "development" section on mine. If there is anything in yours that's not in mine, I'll add it in. Your Op History should remain as is (I don't have one!). That OK with you?
By the way, Lukins writes that the M.15 was flying in 1938, but your source sounds more definitive.TSRL (talk) 15:46, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for go-ahead. You might want to check the refs make sense after merge. I think the result is better than either individual, so if you are happy I'll contact MilburneOne to remove my article. By the way, I prefer the shorter title. We'll hear what others think no doubt!TSRL (talk) 16:05, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- It's surprising that Brown has no more on performance than Lukins. There must have been extensive tests done by the Air Ministry in 1939.TSRL (talk) 16:11, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Heston Phoenix
[edit]Peter, just noticed your edit to Heston Phoenix, I appeciate you have added detailed information like serial numbers and owners to the article but some of the information is to detailed for an encyclopedia. We normally leave such detailed histories to others as it is not really notable. Our purpose is not to record the detailed histories of every airframe. I appreciate your eye for detail but if you can just bear in mind that these articles are for a general and not a specialised audience. MilborneOne (talk) 19:05, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
- Apology Peter I was a bit harsh - I have tried to re-write the aircraft histories to make them a bit later. In Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Registrations we have an exception for aircraft built in small numbers (less than 20) to list some sort of history. See what you think. Eglin A-26
[edit]Accidents/Eglin AFB/A-26 Invader
[edit]Seeing your involvement with Eglin and accidents pages, I'm interested in discovering the serial of the A-26 Invader that crashed in the sea near Eglin on 28 April 1945 while testing Speedee (Highball) bouncing bombs. It was the only A-26 so modified, reportedly at (Vickers) Brooklands. I don't have any expertise on researching accidents, but can you offer advice on how to proceed. I've only got the Johnsen book as just cited on WP bouncing bombs page.PeterWD (talk) 21:31, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- Update, made contact with Barnes Wallis historian Iain Murray, who offered 41-39291, enquiries continuing.PeterWD (talk) 10:32, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
By fluke of circumstance, I am visiting my father in Shalimar, Florida, adjacent to Eglin AFB. I will see what I can come up with about this accident while in the area. Unfortunately, my volume on A-26 development is in storage in South Carolina right now, pending my return to academic life at Clemson University. Best regards! - Checked the local paper, The Okaloosa News-Journal, Crestview, Florida on microfilm today at the Fort Walton Beach Public Library for April 1945, and could not find any article about the A-26 accident. The local publication was only a 4-6 page weekly, published on Fridays, and reading further along, it was not until August 1946 that an accident account appears in the paper (and only a fatal L-5 Sentinel crack-up, at that). I am supposing that the Proving Ground was being very closed-mouth about wartime activities... I may try to contact the history office at Eglin AFB. Jack Hawkins Bio
[edit]Peter - Glad to help out in my small way in trying to keep BOPI NPOV. As for writing bios, I have never had a copyright violation problem, because I always write everything in my own words. Historical facts are not subject to copyright - only wording. I see where you had some problem a while back on a bio of Jack Hawkins. I assume from the discussion above that at least part of the Hawkins article was cut-and-pasted from another website. I don't have access to the now-deleted wiki article on Hawkins, but I'd bet that the problems could be easily fixed by rewording and use of quotations. If you have a copy of the former article that you could post somewhere such as on this talk page, I could have a whack at changing it so that it does not violate copyright. Cheers. Plazak (talk) 19:40, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
- Peter - comparing the article in your sandbox to the article on spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk, I don't see where the copyright problem is. Copyright law treats extensive paraphrasing as akin to copying, but I (without any legal background in such cases) am surprised that there was a perceived problem here. Let me bang on the sandbox version a little over the next few days, and then you might try resubmitting the article. Plazak (talk) 02:30, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Grand Forks AFB
[edit]Thanks for contacting me. Unfortunatley I'm not in contact with anyone at the base, and haven't been there since 2002. I did a search through Google Maps, and if you look at their link, you can see an overhead view of the planes they had at display at the main entrance of the base. I don't believe that I have any pictures of those planes, but hopefully with the overhead view you can make out the aircraft type. The air base's website can be found here, so you can hopefully contact someone there that may be of more assistance than me. If there is anything else I can help with, let me know. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talk • contrib) 23:24, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
- The base's website has a "contact us" page, so if you provide enough details, perhaps they'll forward your request to the person who handles the aircraft (somebody has to maintain them especially in that terrible climate). If not, maybe you'll have to start calling there to get to the person who may know. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talk • contrib) 23:47, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
- If it still doesn't work, if you like, you can e-mail me a copy of your message, and I'll try sending it. If it doesn't work for me either, I can give them a call, I think my cell plan has no issues with long distance. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talk • contrib) 00:56, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Bay of Pigs
[edit]Hi PeterWD -- in your note you said "Hi, your amendment to the article asserts that Playa Giron is outside Bahia de Cochinos. In all the maps and documents I've seen, that is not the case. I plan to reverse your change within 24 hours, unless you can provide a source or convincing rationale.". This map [1] shows that it's just outside the bay, though I can see how some might disagree. Maybe "at the mouth of the bay" might describe this more accurately. Feel free to change it to whatever sounds best. -Rolypolyman (talk) 19:17, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Cienfuegos on File:CubaOMC.png
[edit]¡Hay carramba!
Roughly translated, I’ve fixed it.
According to satellite images, there’s nothing more than a hamlet where I’d plotted Cienfuegos. I must have used an unreliable source. Either that or it was very late. Thank you for spotting that. Kelisi (talk) 02:06, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Your sandbox... User:PeterWD/Sandbox
[edit]Peter, You got a good start. Leading with a large photo is not standard... should be further down in the article. A photo or logo would be on the right, with text on the left. You have good text content and table of exhibits. Your second second sentence is too long and needs to be broken up and written "encyclopedic", not as text as one would find on a company's website. Any adjectives as "largest","tallest", or a claim of fame must be factual and referenced or documented, and not an opinion. Other sentences are complex. The majority of an article's text should be simple grammer of subject-verb-object. If you like, I could do an edit of your sandbox for you.... either replicate all your text and pics, with mine at top and yours below... OR straight over edit of your text, your choice. Glad to help. Cheers, Lance.....LanceBarber (talk) 06:20, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
- Your changes look good. I tweaked a couple of things. The second sentence in the History section is awkward; needs rewording. Yes, the museum infobox is probably the standard, but not consistantly used. Otherwise, highlight and copy your final text, open up the new museum name, and paste. Let me know... your doing just fine. Cheeers, Lance..... LanceBarber (talk) 04:58, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
- Glad to help any time. This is a team effort!! Lance.....LanceBarber (talk) 05:28, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

If you want to make an automatic redirect, please use #REDIRECT [[pagename]] or click the blue arrow at the outer right edge of the "Advanced" editing toolbar; otherwise it won't work. {{main}} is for use in full articles to point at other main articles before referring to them in a short section. [edit]Actually yes, there is a problem, the battle template (which is being used for political events) has been removed from all associated articles and replaced with a new template of the same title at the bottom of the articles. I meant to begin the process for delting the unappropriate template last night but I forgot, so I will do it right now.--$1LENCE D00600D (talk) 00:06, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
List of Consolidated PBY Catalina survivors
[edit]This has to do with the two aircraft listed for Buffalo Airways. According to the Transport Canada database Buffalo own two PBY-5A, FNJE and FPQM and the List of Consolidated PBY Catalina survivors has FPQM and FUAW for Buffalo. Again according to the database FUAW is now owned by Pacific Flying Boats. On the list FNJE is listed as being owned by Fairview Aircraft Restoration Society (FARS). There are a couple of problems with the TC database. First the serial numbers don't always match the list. Second, the TC database shows all registered aircraft but does not say if they are airworthy or not. So according to TC Buffalo has 14 DC3s but some are in pieces to be used as spare parts. So because I wasn't sure about the aircraft being airworthy I didn't want to change the list. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 17:29, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- Since I wrote the above I went through the TC database to see how it matched the list. TC only has 6 PBY-5A listed. I'll look at the list David Legg has and see how it matches up. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 18:47, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Ciro612, having seen the above notices, I'm pleased to report that your addition of an external link on the BoPI page is more than welcome, to this editor at least, particularly on this anniversary of the event. PeterWD (talk) 19:47, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
PeterWD: Thanks for approving this link. I've tried to include similar links as projects with which I work offer such historical background on other topics and I thought it would be valuable for Wikipedia readers. However, in the case of Libya and the Operation Eagle Claw links, they were marked as SPAM. Also deleted yesterday, with no comment on my talk page, were links to first-hand accounts from the Battle of Ia Drang. These are all original accounts of the battle from people who were there (or in the case of one wife, her memories of thinking her husband was dead), so I'm not sure why they aren't allowed. Any insight you have would be helpful. I'm not trying to SPAM. Just trying to share some of the info. I've worked to pull together in other arenas. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ciro612 (talk • contribs) 09:43, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

Heathrow
[edit]Please feel free to put that in, I think it'll look much better. I've been on the lookout for Sherwood's 1999 book for a while now but have as yet been unsuccessful. Harrison49 (talk) 17:44, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information on the books. The 2009 edition isn't available in any of my local libraries at present, although I should be able to get a copy of "Around Heathrow" soon. Just to let you know, the article has been approved for the Did You Know section of the Main page, though I won't know when it'll be shown until it's put in the queue. It don't think it'll be for a little while yet. Harrison49 (talk) 19:37, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- I think that's a good idea. I've moved it to Heathrow (hamlet) and changed the link on the Did You Know nomination. The article for Heathrow Airport is getting quite long now, so a separate history article is definitely worth considering. Also, I've got hold of the 2000 Years of History and Around Heathrow books now, as well as Time Flies: Heathrow at 60 which seems to have plenty to be going on with. The Around... books are good for history, I've used some of the others in the series for editing other articles and can get a lot out of them. Harrison49 (talk) 11:45, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Yes I was somewhat concerned by that as well. As it doesn't exist as an area anymore, I'll remove it from the Hillingdon template. I've heard before that Heathrow sits on the boundary of three areas, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Spelthorne. Not sure if that is mentioned in the airport article. It's possible that the addresses for buildings in the airport may have confused people. Harrison49 (talk) 13:13, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Feel free to make a start, I'm working on something else at present. Harrison49 (talk) 13:48, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
I have an update on the article's progress in the Did You Know process: it will be shown on the Main Page tomorrow from 7pm. Harrison49 (talk) 20:59, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
- I'll add that information in for now, then we can make the changes again later on. DYK is quite a nice little way of showcasing what you're interested in, to take it to a wider audience. Harrison49 (talk) 12:36, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, I've noticed that there is a "verification needed" tag on the article. I can't get the pdf to open, so am unable to double check this. It seems that you have a book that also verifies the statement. As I don't have the book, would you do the honours of adding a ref. The article uses {{sfn}} for all book refs. You should be able to work it out easy enough, the important thing in the cite book template at the bottom is the |ref=harv
parameter. Mjroots (talk) 21:51, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

re: a little translation
[edit]I have looked at the original Spanish, and the machine translations. I can rule out the Google translation - it is unreliable and a bad mistranslation. The yahoo-babel and bing translations are better, but they are not valid nor "safe" enough to be admitted without causing a furore. I would suggest my own translation:
"Fellow workers and peasants, this is the socialist and democratic revolution of the humble, with the huumble and for the humble. And through this revolution of the humble, with the humble and for the humble, we are willing to give life." Thehistorian10 (talk) 18:31, 14 October 2011 (UTC)thehistorian10
I note the posting you made on my talk page. I'd say stick with the new version you found, but replace the word "companero" with the better English word "fellow" as in "fellow workers and peasants" Thehistorian10 (talk) 18:25, 15 October 2011 (UTC)thehistorian10

Short Brothers
[edit]Good morning. I saw you've just added a biog. of Oswald Short, and was wondering if you were gong to do the other two brothers... I was thinking of doing so, but if you've got something on the go I won't bother.TheLongTone (talk) 05:18, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
- The Short Crusader, which I've just done an expansion of, could do with an image. I'm planning to expand the Gull, interesting little machine extensively described in Flight. I rather like one-offs, if they are technically interesting.TheLongTone (talk) 08:52, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

French Air and Space Museum
[edit]Hi, Peter! You made a request to have the museum article moved to the French name.
The museum officially uses "French Air and Space Museum" - Are you sure the French name is the most common? WhisperToMe (talk) 13:22, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
In that case, I'm going to try out Google News and Google Books to check reliable sources written in English to see which is preferred. If you do find your statistics, please let me know about them. Though I think checking specifically RSes will be a stronger case than, say, simply relying on Google Hits. WhisperToMe (talk) 13:49, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Good to see the images, I was particularly interested in the copyright waiver from Flight, on the Gull photo. I'm never sure about copyright issues & in this case I've just done a screenshot of the very good 3-view in Flight, which I'll insert when I've expanded the article a bit. [edit]I am a total technopeasant (a fact probably evident to all!) and grateful for your comments and suggestions on the Mrs Bruce page. Unfortunately I still find the editing process very complicated and confusing, and on several occasions have begun the process and then quit in frustration. I set up the page for Mary Bruce several years ago because of a particular interest in her life. Years of research have finally resulted in the biography just published; it fills in many omissions in her highly selective autobiography. Much of the misinformation on the Wiki page is due to her casual recollection of her life in "Nine Lives Plus"; I guess writing an autobiography 50 or 60 years after the events accounts for the errors and omissions. There are still several errors on the page (she was not convicted of speeding at age 15; her first car was not an Enfield-Allday; she began racing her several speedboats and set the first of her two English Channel records in 1928, not 1929; she began flying in May of 1930; she took lessons at Brooklands, not from Norman Blackburn in Brough; she didn't have a forced landing in San Diego; she crashed in Medford and Baltimore . . .etc). I was unable to add the reference for the expanded material on Air Dispatch, but at least I have apparently corrected a couple of things. I will keep trying, and thank you for your encouragement and for your expert additions in the commercial aviation section. NancyRWilson (talk) 16:16, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Challenge International de Tourisme 1930
[edit]Hi. You can change it yourself if you wish, I don't oppose. Or ask some admin, if it would need removing a redirect. BTW, Flight uses mostly English name (at least for 1932 contest, which I've researched recently for a featured article in the Polish Wiki) - or calls it "circuit of Europe". Regards. DYK for Winifred Brown
[edit]On 30 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Winifred Brown, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when Winifred Brown (pictured) arrived for the King's Cup air race in 1930, she was not allowed to stay at the aero club but still won the race? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Winifred Brown. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Winifred Brown), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
