A Request (Two, actually)
Two things, both involving Motto of the day. First: Put up an MotD template (which can be found on the main page) on your userpage or I'll slap you with a WikiTrout. :) Second: We (I) have just finished setting up our new Motto Shop, and need a first customer. You can find out more about it there. Would you be interested in such a thing? ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 02:16, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- 1) No, because I'm lazy, but you can do it for me if you want. ;) 2)Could be interesting, can I pay in those Zimbabwean dollars Courelles used to bribe everyone with at his RfA? Oh, and it's currently 03:20 here, can it wait 'til daylight? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:20, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- First, alright. :) Second, it can't, because then it'll be nighttime here. :) ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 02:24, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- OK then, I've made my request. Hopefully it'll be something worth getting out of bed for! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:34, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- I'll make sure it is. :) ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 02:36, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Your new motto
What do you think? I think it's pretty funny, but I may be a bit biased... :P ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 02:52, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

- No problem. Goodbye and Goodnight from the East Coast :)--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 02:55, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- So, Mr. Motto Shop's first ever customer, what do you think of your new motto? Is it good enough? Or shall I have to throw it away and start again? :) ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 03:03, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Huh? What's this? dffgd talk·edits 14:08, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- Its a motto made by people from the motto shop. Maybe you could make a request? Derild4921☼ 16:17, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- Excuse me, but I'm pretty sure I made that one on my own. :) ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 19:27, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

User space for self-promotion?
Could you take a look at User talk:MatthewG816 and let me know if what he's doing is against WP policy on self-promotion? Since it's his talk page I wasn't sure what (if any) action to take. Thanks. Jrcla2 (talk) 05:09, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Deleted Edits
I have 3 deleted edits. These edits were deleted today, but I have only been working to repair stub articles. What does this mean?Epicstonemason (talk) 17:26, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- It means your edit has been removed, most likely because someone expanded the article and removed the stub tag. At least, I think that's what it means. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. N419BH 19:55, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Main Page
Visiting http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Mаin_Page turns me up at the red link now and doesn't auto-redirect me to the main page. Therefore can it be restored? -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 20:35, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- That's very, very strange. Damn vandals! Trust them to find a way to break the Main Page! I've redirected and fully protected both the article and talk page. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:41, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- Did you try purging? After it was deleted and before I purged, when I typed in "Main Page" I got the message "Did you mean Main Page?" very strange indeed. Marcus Qwertyus 20:47, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- Maybe there's a bug then <shrug> the redirect is a perfect workaround so it doesn't seem worth worrying about any further. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 20:50, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Motto thing
I've added in a new feature; after you get your motto, you get to rate it. So go to the request that I did for you, and you can let me know how I did. :) It's a new parameter in the template that you add a number to. And once sonia finishes your new one, you can rate that one too. I hope you like your mottos! :) Don't forget to plaster them on your userpage! :P ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 20:50, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- If you could do that somewhat soon, it would be fantastic, because I don't want to have it forgotten, and have an unfinished request be archived. :) Sorry for bothering you. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 21:41, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Copyright process heads-up
Regarding at least Irish Planning Institute, the appropriate process for dealing with articles where the content has been copied but permission is asserted is (in addition to declining the speedy deletion as you did) to blank the article using {{subst:copyvio|url=insert URL here}}
, as many OTRS releases never come through or are inadequate. Wikipedia:Copyright violations has more details if you feel like wading through it. Cheers! VernoWhitney (talk) 12:24, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

31 hour blocks
Hi! Are 31 hour blocks some sort of standard preset/procedure many administrators use for example personal attacks or harrasment? I also see it is often used for IP addresses vandalizing. /HeyMid (contributions) 20:22, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- I can't speak for other admins, but I tend to prefer 31 hour blocks for IP vandals, as quite often vandals will be on a time-table - they might have a regular class at school, for example. With a 24 hour block the block will end right in time for their next class. With 31 hour blocks their next class rolls along, but they're still blocked. For much the same reason I don't normally tell editors like this how long they're blocked for. (For a registered editor I would always tell them how long they were blocked for). TFOWR 20:30, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Speaking as someone who has been blocked, usually in error I hasten to add, you get a message saying when the block expires when you try and edit anyway. O Fenian (talk) 20:32, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Speaking as someone who has also been blocked, sometimes in error, I'm surprised I didn't know that ;-) Huh. There goes my big anti-vandal plan! TFOWR 20:42, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, but that still doesn't defeat the rationale for 31-hours blocks. FYI this has been discussed at MediaWiki talk:Ipboptions. –xenotalk 20:47, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Huh - there used to be a 15 minute option. (I guess there still is, manually). I bet that annoyed the recipients. It seemed quite popular, too. TFOWR 20:59, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- They were mainly used before anon-only blocks and XFF were implemented, so they blocked all editing often from entire ISPs or countries at a time. That's the main reason they were kept so short. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:11, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Aircrash AfDs
Hi, thanks for your note. I notice you've nominated a few aircraft accident articles for AfD. At least two of them had redlinked AfD discussion links on the AfD notice this morning event though there was an AfD in progress, but this seems to have been fixed now. I don't know what went wrong there.
One thing I did want to say, is that it is often the case that after the immediate period of time after a crash, everything does go quiet. Aircrash investigations take time, and it can be two years or more before a report is published into an accident. Such quietness should not be taken to mean that there is a "lack of significant coverage beyond the immediate event". I've made my comments at various AfDs and am happy for the community to decide the fate of the articles in question. Mjroots (talk) 09:11, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
- I AfD'd a recent helicopter crash, but apparently I'm biased against Israeli helicopters crashing in Romania. I decided to have a look at the other articles on the template and sent a few that didn't look particularly significant, but I trust the community to separate the wheat from the chaff. Admin
Hey, I was wondering if I could ask you to review a page for GA status? I am not entirely sure if I should, and therefore, just kindly tell me... The articles in question are listed on the GA nominations page under the film section. If you want, I'll link the pages directly after your response, but since I am not sure if I even should do this, I will take the precaution to not link it here. ChaosMasterChat 15:38, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
- It's fine to ask. What are the articles? I can't promise anything, but I'll consider it. Btw, why the "admin" section header? You don;t have to be an admin to review GA nominations. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:07, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I saw you reviewing quite a few GA nominations, and thought it was because of your admin status. I don't know, just weird thinking I guess. The articles are: Twilight (2008 film) and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. I have edited them quite a lot, and because of that I don't think its fair that I review it myslef. Diego Grez
I came here from User_talk:Diego_Grez upon seeing a notice that this user is under editing restriction and that you are mentoring him. The user is adding photos of himself (or a relative) to amateur radio and related articles, first beginning in December of this year and continuing against Talk Page consensus: the image he identifies as an "amateur radio operator" is unverifiable as such. He recently added this image again. You may want to counsel him regarding WP policy. - LuckyLouie (talk) 19:40, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
- What? Do you really think that he is me? Nope, it's my dad. If you don't want the image there, you should have left me a message and I wouldn't have opposed the removal. I don't have interest on the article, but no one noticed me of anything that was going on with the picture. Diego Grez what's up? 19:41, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

- Thanks for the WN publish. :) The issue isn't that you're deliberately adding incorrect images, it's just that some of the images you add are perhaps not the most appropriate so, as Sonia says, it's probably a good idea to leave a note on the talk page of an article you're thinking of adding an image to, then yo can ad it if nobody objects. Hey, I'm also here regarding Diego, but it's a trivial matter. On Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/MannaRelief, he added a delete comment saying simply "per nom." While that's fine, I'd ask Diego to keep in mind that discussions on Wikipedia are decided by consensus, not voting, and that simply putting "per nom" on an Afd usually does little to help the discussion without a valid reason. See WP:PERNOM. Thanks and keep up the good work with Afds otherwise. elektrikSHOOS 21:50, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

I have a problem with this comment, not only the unnecessary trout message, but the claim that all articles "sponsored" by a WikiProject automatically makes them notable, even if this person seems to violate WP:POLITICIANS. Everard Proudfoot (talk) 22:46, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Question on ITN Procedure
Hey HJ,
I know that aside from editing ITN and your work as an admin, you also have/had dealings with Media, Commons, Wiki-news and other trans-wiki projects so I figured you might be the person to ask...
- My question is this: Most of the stories either posted, nominated or blurbed on WP:ITN are stories dealing with foreign countries or policies of foreign governments (Foreign in the sense of countries not the U.S. or the U.K.), and while we strive to check our facts by sourcing, sometimes even the international media does not give a clear picture of the situation. Given that, I was wondering if it would be possible/feasible to compile a list of editors from different language versions of WP that are bilingual in English so that we could ask them directly and clear up common misconceptions of stories before they get posted.
- Something of a wild idea I'll admit, but you can see an example of this under the nomination of the Bullfighting Ban in Catalonia. MickMacNee posted the info that several municipalities in Spain had already banned the sport, (sounds true, but hard to check), but a user named Vilar posted that indeed it is not quite true as (other than the Canary Islands) there are Anti-Bullfighting Cities, but not formal bans. His user page says he is actually from Spain and therefore he is most probably correct in this matter. To wit: if we had access to editors from different countries who were bilingual in English, then we could instantly check the accuracy of any story first-hand; not as an article writing tool, merely as a fact-checking mechanism.
Would this be at all possible or even advisable? It could certainly help us find sources on less-then-covered stories and would open up a new route for cross-wiki interaction. Thoughts? Cwill151 (talk) 00:48, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
- Interesting idea. I'm afraid I'm embarrassingly monolingual, though I did manage a Google-translated post on a talk page on the Swedish WP. Because of the sheer size of enwiki, there are a fair number of editors who speak other languages. If people are willing to go cross-wiki and ask people, I suppose it could work, though a quick look at local sources for most countries should confirm or deny whatever we needed to know. As to the Catalonian bull fighting ban specifically, I believe it's the first such ban in mainland Spain and that's what I wrote in the Wikinews article. It's what the BBC and various other sources are saying. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:23, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Please userfy or e-mail me my user page.
I am honest and can assure you that I won't immediately create a page. I probably will not. If it is done, it will be after careful though and major revision.
I am delighted that you haven't been in the attacking mode as some administrators do. Your offer of giving me back the information is appreciated.
Please be mindful in the future if you do one thing and then want to do a second action. These include blocking then denying or voting for an AFD then taking furthur action. By seeing your reaction, I see that you will be a far better admin than some of our worse apples.
I will be requesting that the ANI thread be closed because of your kind response. Please don't forget and either userfy my user page or e-mail it to me. MVOO (talk) 01:07, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
- Sure. I can userfy the whole article, complete with history, so you can work out whether you can salvage anything or merge it into Cheney's biography (probably your best chance of keeping some of the content on WP) or I can just email you the text or both. Just so you know, if you repost it without talking to the admin who closed the discussion, it qualifies for speedy deletion under CSD G4. Let me know what you want me to do and I'll get onto it in a minute. It still would have been easier if you'd asked me nicely without going through ANI, but if everybody's satisfied in the end, we can get back to doing other things. MickMacNee (talk) 19:32, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
- When you do a history merge, you have to leave the "move edit" in the trash, HJ forgot to do that. Rather than re-deleting it, though, a simple revert seemed to work in this simple case. Courcelles (talk) 19:43, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

- I'm sure they'll get over it, Mick. The merge was useful because we had two articles on the same subject and no conflicting revisions- Johnsemlak's last edit was before your first. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:48, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
- ???? "we had two articles on the same subject and no conflicting revisions- Johnsemlak's last edit was before your first" - that is precisely why a history merge is not needed. A history merge is for reconciling overlapping edits where they need attribution in a repaired state. That's not the case here, which was solveable with a simple redirect, preserving the original meaning of everybody's edit summaries. MickMacNee (talk) 22:07, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Commas
Why are you adding commas where unnecessary? Juliancolton (talk) 18:27, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- They are necessary. For example, "did you know that on July 19, 2010, Rich Cho became..." doesn't make sense without a comma- "on July 19, 2010" is a sub-clause of the sentence (which is why there's a comma after 2010). It's a common mistake to omit the first comma (as can be seen on almost every set of DYK hooks) but it is a mistake. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:18, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- It's not a mistake; it's a matter of preference. And even so, comma usage should be dictated by practicality rather than grammatical perfection. What is the purpose of a pause after "that"? I think it unnecessarily disrupts the sentence flow personally. Juliancolton (talk) 21:18, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) The actual sentence is "Did you know that Rich Cho became...." As HJ said, "on July 19, 2010" is a sub-clause of the sentence. The sentence can stand alone without that addition. Take it out and it will read "Did you know that Rich Cho became...." which, as you can see, is capable of standing by itself. The date is just extra information for reference, and should, indeed, be separated from the sentence by a comma/commas.
