Journals

You have no doubt seen my recent comments at User talk:Shalor (Wiki Ed) about your journals. I deleted three of them and have had a touch of conscience about doing so. I have emailed their text to you so that you can grade them. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 01:34, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

I recommend you to install the MediaWiki software on one of your university's servers. Your students can create their journals there without fear of interruption by busybodies like me. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 08:09, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

@RHaworth: Thanks for letting me know. I have done this for a couple of semesters now without incident. My thinking is that by editing Wikipedia everyday on their journals, not only are they learning to use Wikipedia, but what they post will lead directly to their edits on the site. Would it be possible to let them alone this semester, and I'll use my own install in future semesters? It's only a single subpage for each of them. Thank you for your consideration. —Grlucas (talk) 14:41, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

See here for my main reply. You may thank Thomas Smith for bringing your journals to my attention - see this exchange. He had made a complete false start at category:T. Smith HUMN 4472 Journal and I had deleted it. He was foolish enough to complain to me about the deletion without realising that he had created his journal in the correct place a week earlier. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 11:01, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

@RHaworth: LOL. This is why I love Wikipedia: I learn something new all the time. —Grlucas (talk) 11:49, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

Wiki Projects Feedback

I know that we are to do feed back for others articles but how do I see the feedback that my peers have given for my article. Also in the revision process are we to only revise our contributions to the articles or the entire article? --Deja.Sams (talk) 17:20, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

@Deja.Sams: you can put feedback in any logical place where they will see it, like the article's or the user's talk page. You should revise and edit the entirety of the article. Your job is to improve it. Stop when you can't possibly improve it further. —Grlucas (talk) 17:28, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
@Grlucas: I need some assistance with my wikipedia project. KhajadaNeal (talk) 00:21, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
@KhajadaNeal: How may I help? The section you added should be edited and incorporated into existing sections. —Grlucas (talk) 12:03, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
@Grlucas: Just so I understand correctly I just need to proofread and move the section I made to one that was already existing KhajadaNeal (talk) 16:24, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
@KhajadaNeal: That's a start. You have much more to add, right? Sources, critical reception, etc. Remember, this is your major grade for this class. —Grlucas (talk) 20:35, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
@Grlucas: I didn't see where how much I was supposed to add to the wiki article. I’m not really sure on what more I can add to it. The person that created the Wiki article summed up what the article was about unless I’m suppose to put more of others idea of robotics that Bill Joy didn’t agree with. Critical reception? Would that be others critics on Bill Joys article?KhajadaNeal (talk) 03:26, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
@KhajadaNeal: You might carefully read the assignment again. Do you feel what you have done is equivalent to a traditional research paper? If you need more assistance, please see me. —Grlucas (talk) 11:11, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
@Grlucas: Will you be in your office this morning or tomorrow? KhajadaNeal (talk) 13:35, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
@Grlucas: I do not understand what you meant about incorporating what was discussed in class under the Butler article? I am really confused about the meaning. MarinChristina (talk) 00:00, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
@MarinChristina: We did not not read "The Evening and the Morning and the Night" and you wrote a paragraph about it. That's fine, but you should be concentrating on "Blood Child," which we did read. —Grlucas (talk) 11:05, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
@Grlucas: I understand now! Thank you, Dr. Lucas. MarinChristina (talk) 21:53, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
@Grlucas: Hello, I need some assistanace with the final article. To be quite honest I dont even know where to begin that's why I haven't began
@VincentH81: First of all, you should always sign your name to messages on talk pages. Next, what does your research on Revolution OS show the page is missing? I'm sure you've been doing your research, right? Does the page need copyediting? Revision? Is a new section necessary? Should any links be added? Is any information incorrect? What needs to be sourced? Does this help? (You might begin by adding more to the bibliography, then adding to the "Reception" section.) —Grlucas (talk) 14:16, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

The Entire History of You

Hi! I noticed that Blusolace is taking one of your courses, and I saw their edits to The Entire History of You. Unfortunately, I have had to remove a lot of the content as it does not quite meet Wikipedia's guidelines. As this is a high-profile page, with roughly 1000 pageviews per day, there is less leniency on content being added that is still a work in progress, or fails some of our rules.

As I understand that the content added by the student may be perfectly fine for the purposes of the educational course, I recommend that the student copy over their version of the page, found here, to a page in their userspace, like User:Blusolace/The Entire History of You, where they can continue editing their work. I am happy to integrate any of their additions which conform to Wikipedia's guidelines once the assignment is over.

I have also left the user a message here. Thanks! — Bilorv (talk) 12:18, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

@Bilorv: Thanks for letting me know. I understand your concerns, and I appreciate your letting the student know. I try to make them aware that they must meet Wikipedia's standards for edits, but sometimes they fall short. This is a real-life learning experience, and you have graciously helped with the lesson. Again, thanks. —Grlucas (talk) 12:25, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

Your submission at Articles for creation: Susan Mailer has been accepted

However, you may continue submitting work to Articles for Creation if you prefer.

Thank you for helping improve Wikipedia!

J. Michael Lennon

Just did a quick review of the article. Yes it is now a C-Class article.

I am confused about one thing why is it that the paragraph about Norman Mailer: Works and Days (2000) comes after 2014?

I feel the structure needs work, also usually bios when they reach the featured article status (but not always) start with three meaty paragraph on the subject.

Never the less good job devoting yourself to an article. You clearly deserve lots of props for it.

If its ok with you could you give me your feedback on the Brandon Lee article on which I've spend load of time.

Happy holidays.Filmman3000 (talk) 22:38, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

@Filmman3000: Thanks very much for your review and notes. I appreciate it. I put Works and Days after the biography and the letters because the former two are more important, even if they appear chronologically later. Does that make sense? Perhaps some subsections are called for? Let me think about the structure a bit more; I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have. I have a hard time getting any article I write higher than a B-class. Must be the academic in me. I'll have a close read-through of Brandon Lee and give you some notes, though by just looking, it appears to be well done. Cheers, Grlucas (talk) 00:05, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
Yes I do think that the best way is always in chronological order, but yes subsection are fine in the meantime.
My rule of thumb is to look at featured article within the category I am working on and copy the format that I find the most convenient to me. From my quick look to authors bio it seems that the chronological order of releases is the preffered way.

It is against the policy and could cause the class some difficulty (it happened last semester). If you must keep a journal, do so off of Wikipedia, please. I would ask that you take a look at the 3Cs Log assignment again. It is not a journal assignment. Everything you post should be about improving Wikipedia in some way. Please see WP:NOTWEBHOST and read it carefully.

You all should feel proud of what you've accomplished so far on Wikipedia, and this week (by 2/26) you need to submit what you've done for evaluation. Once you have posted your reflexive statement on your talk page (see the syllabus—it should detail your major contributions to Wikipedia over the last few weeks, including appropriate links—especially to your individual project article), post a link to it below. Please do this last as an indication that you're ready for evaluation. We still have a week, so keep working and asking questions to make your work the best it can be. I truly look forward to seeing your final products. —Grlucas (talk) 11:36, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Though I don't wish to claim the blatant grammatical errors, please check the ownership of the article Substances poisonous to dogs, thanks Bamcclure18 (talk) 17:57, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
@Bamcclure18: No one owns articles here, though I see what you're referring to. I'll comment further soon. —Grlucas (talk) 18:46, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

A beer for you!

I see what you're doing, Dr. Lucas--thanks. I'm working on one of your students' DYK nominations (Template:Did you know nominations/Madwoman (book)); I suppose for them the whole thing is over now that that portion of your class is over. Anyway, I'll try to get it on the front page anyway, so you can add that to your Wikipedia user page and to your annual evaluation. ;) Drmies (talk) 14:56, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
@Drmies: Mmmmmm, beer. Thanks very much for you help! I had an excellent cohort this semester, and I hope many of them continue to be active editors. —Grlucas (talk) 15:00, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
The article was on the front page yesterday--I think next time you teach this class you can click on the history to show your students, if they don't already know, what the benefits of collaborative editing are. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:33, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
@Drmies: That is fabulous! Thanks so much for your help. @Benjamin Fincher: Have you seen this? Congratulations on your great work. —Grlucas (talk) 16:39, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Article Question

Hi, Dr. Lucas! This is Kaitlyn Kelly in your Senior Seminar Course on Tuesday's @ 9:30. In class on Tuesday, 3/10/2020, you stated that part one of our wikipedia article, Hamlet on the Holodeck was a bit too long. I have made revisions to that section of the article to where it's short, sweet and straight to the point. I was wondering would you mind taking a look at the article so that I can know whether if it's still too long, too short, etc.I do plan on adding maybe a few more sentences to discuss the last bit of the chapter. I just wanted your opinion. Here's the link to our article. Draft: Hamlet on the Holodeck Kaitlyn.Kelly (talk) 02:28, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

@Kaitlyn.Kelly: You’re on the right track, but I think it can be edited even further. I cut a bit from the first long paragraph and added shortened footnotes as an example. Also, all citations should use templates. Most of the rest of the sentences need to be revised, I'm afraid. Let me know if you need more help. You might ask from your article's talk page. —Grlucas (talk) 13:36, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
@Grlucas: Okay, thank you,Dr. Lucas!

Hello professor.

My dissertation follows the growth of graffiti in New York City from child's play to an original art.[1]

@EBirzin: Thanks, Edward. It was instrumental in writing The Faith of Graffiti (I filled in a couple of items in your citation). Thanks. —Grlucas (talk) 14:09, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for filling in those items in the citation. I will fill those in more closely in the future. I uploaded an image of the original cover of The Faith of Graffiti from my library to the commons. Your students may use it for the page if they like. Or I can go to the page and try to add it. What do you recommend? I'm still weary of working on things I am connected to for fear of making a faux pas dans la internet. The image is here: EBirzin (talk) 14:29, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
@EBirzin: Yes, by all means, add it to the article (it should not go here, so I'm removing it). Don't worry about editing: be bold! Just make your edits and be sure to preview them (and fix any errors) before you save. Cheers, Grlucas (talk) 14:55, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Being Digital-Random User Deletes Sections

Good evening@Grlucas:, I wanted you to be aware that I had rewritten two main sections under our article from two of my group members. Their contributions lacked sources, citations, and I noticed direct copying of sentences from the book. After thorough editing and revising, I was notified that a random user had undone my edits. Their reason was because I didn't provide a better description as to my edits. (I believed I had). I noticed this occurred after I had also edited the Lead. Well, after a little while, I went back and undone what this random user had done. I left the Lead alone this time because I'm afraid it'll trigger that user to come back and perhaps block me or worse, delete all my work again. The good news is that I know you're able to go into my history and see this crazy exchange. I just wanted to take the initiative and make you aware. I appreciate you and your time. Besides the random users deleting my work, this new Wiki experience was a fun adventure. KRCPhilmon (talk) 03:42, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

@Grlucas: I forgot to mention that I had deleted the "Negroponte Switch" section as well. I had taken your advice to do so because it wasn't a necessary/main point. There are terrible grammatical errors too. Well, that random user had brought it back. KRCPhilmon (talk) 04:06, 6 May 2020 (UTC)
@KRCPhilmon: Thank you for your work. Unfortunately, this happens in collaborative environments. I'll be sure to take that into consideration. Enjoy your break. —Grlucas (talk) 12:13, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Superman Comes to the Supermarket, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Henry Wallace and Adlai Stevenson. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 10:10, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

The article cites "Lennon (2018, pp. 3–37)" but no such source is listed in bibliography. Can you please add? Also, suggest installing a script to highlight such errors in the future. All you need to do is copy and paste importScript('User:Svick/HarvErrors.js'); // Backlink: [[User:Svick/HarvErrors.js]] to your common.js page. Thanks, Renata (talk) 20:45, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

@Renata3: Thanks much. All fixed. —Grlucas (talk) 12:47, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
