Idea development for article "The Faith of Graffiti"

[edit]

Identifying and mapping mentioned locations

  • West 161st Street, Washington Heights, South Bronx
    • Interview location between A-I (Mailer), CAY 161, JUNIOR 161, LI'L FLAME and LURK
    • Home of Junior's parents
  • Seventh Ave and 86th Street
  • 207th Street (Mailer 141)
    • A-train yard entrance
  • 158th and St. Nicholas Avenue (Mailer 142)
    • Interview with Japan
  • NYC Mayor's residence: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Gracie_Mansion

List of graffiti artists

  • A list would be nice, but there are no meaningful details about them to justify the list unless it can be paired with an image of their "names" as a caption.

Terms to define

  • "hit"
  • "put in the hours"
  • "add up the names"

Lettering style

  • basic lettering ... Mailer terms it "utilitarian" (Mailer 138) and Junior refers to the later style as "just fanciness" (Mailer 138)

Background or a section to add context

  • Graffiti artists CAY 161 and JUNIOR 161 were no longer practicing at the time of the interview (Mailer 131).
  • CAY 161 suffered lingering injuries from a car accident prior to the interview (Mailer 139).
  • Book's namesake (Mailer 139)
  • Graffiti movement (Mailer 144)
  • New air conditioned subway cars (Mailer 149)
  • NYC Mayor John Lindsay: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/John_Lindsay

Wish list for resources

  • description/meaning of Jewish grandmother joke

Classmate Greetings

[edit]

@Bdokolasa: Nice to meet you too! Wikipedia is so much more than the lawless information free-for-all that I originally thought. I'm looking forward to learning more and learning what I anticipate will be a valued skill. OrchardBreeze (talk) 00:04, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@OrchardBreeze: Working from home and having a more flexible job schedule is my top goal, as well, and I'm hopeful that I will gain the skills through this program to become a better candidate for those kinds of jobs. Nice to meet you! Bdokolasa (talk) 13:20, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@OrchardBreeze: I worked full time as well. Taking classes online is very interested. I will say this is my first semester in a graduate class and the course is fascinating, but also challenging as we progress through the course schedule. I hope to be an expert by the end of the semester and of future assistance to my future peers taking this class. Hope that you have a successfully semester as all. @Ab1g81aL93: Good to meet you. I wish you much success, as well. OrchardBreeze (talk) 23:28, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, OrchardBreeze, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. What is your project article?

[edit]

Hey there. What have you been working on for your P2 article? I ask because nothing is claimed on the WikiEdu dashboard. Thanks. —Grlucas (talk) 13:58, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Grlucas:I added to the WikiEdu dashboard. I've read two books from Mailer's Ancient Evenings and will add to the summary of the existing article. I have additional plans to edit multiple pages:
Ideas for P2
Add to summary section of https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Ancient_Evenings
The Book of One Man Dead
The Book of the Gods
Create background section in Ancient Evenings from A Double Life source
Look for opportunities in A Double Life to add to https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Marilyn:_A_Biography
Review early history content deleted from FOG to consider for https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Graffiti_in_New_York_City
Link to FOG from other articles

Last Additions to FOG

[edit]

Again, thanks for your recent work on FOG. However, most, if not all, of what you added had more to do with graffiti and less to do with FOG. While there are maybe a couple of parts that you could use in the article, it was more like original research than a WP article. Remember additions should be directly related to the subject of the article, otherwise you're writing an essay, not a WP article. I have removed these edits, but I can send them to you if you need them. Please let me know if you have questions. —Grlucas (talk) 12:46, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

NMAC 5108 reflective essay

[edit]

Wikipedia applies strict practices in an effort to provide valid, valued and research-supported information to its readers. This stringent approach was the most surprising discovery during the NMAC 5108 coursework and Wiki Education lessons. During my undergraduate studies, I had previously been led to believe that the website content garnered validity only one level above that of a Facebook post from an opinionated contributor. Wikipedia pages are not perfect, as I learned during the critique of other articles. Each page, however, continually improves through other editors like me and my NMAC 5108 classmates. Together we resolve errors ranging from grammar and punctuation; to aesthetics and adding visual elements and styling; to organizing content in meaningful ways; to linking to other related Wiki pages toward increased viewership; to validating information and supporting with only academic resources.

I made numerous contributions to the FOG article, but struggled with understanding what appropriately contributed to Mailer's essay and the purpose of the wiki article. I sought to answer the questions I’d had and include references I found useful to understand the text, but failed to contribute according to the guidelines. I appreciate the feedback I received, but am still not sure I completely understand the nuances of allowable contributions. Though many of my contributions were removed, I feel strongly that I demonstrated my ability to apply more advanced coding techniques like quotation boxes, images, and cross-linking to other Wiki pages. I’ve learned that cross-linking is especially important to increase viewership and create a strong Wikipedia presence for an article.

I also struggled with what I felt was an overwhelming task to create a new article. After all, what do I have to add that hasn’t already been covered? I added summary information about Mailer’s novel Ancient Evenings and planned to contribute some of my deleted content about the early styles of graffitists, but the Graffiti page was semi-protected. I really tried to “be bold” as advised, but ultimately ended the experience feeling intimidated.

View my recorded Wiki contributions during the course.

Sorry if this experience was ultimately intimidating for you. I realize it can be—especially at the beginning. Usually, however, with consistent editing and persistence, you get it after a time. I can see why you might be frustrated with your additions to FOG, but as I explained, most of that seemed to be original research which we can't do as editors on Wikipedia. Why was creating a new article "an overwhelming task"? I agree that it's some work, but you also had the option of editing an existing article. Thanks for the thoughts; you should have used subheads and proper formatting (like italics and links) when needed. Did you write this quickly? —Grlucas (talk) 16:25, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
