Links to draft articles
[edit]Please do not introduce links in actual articles to draft articles, as you did to Spanish missions in Georgia. Since a draft is not yet ready for the main article space, it is not in shape for ordinary readers, and links from articles should not go to a draft. Such links are contrary to the Manual of Style. These links have been removed. Thank you. - Arjayay (talk) 11:20, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Comments about your draft article
[edit]I appreciate that you want to contribute to Wikipedia, and particular in the area of Spanish missions in what is now Georgia. I have looked at your Draft:Santa Cruz de Cachipile, and offer the following comments in the spirit of helping you.
Wikipedia's policies and guidelines are extensive, and it can take a while to become even somewhat familiar with them. First, though, we have a very strict policy about violating copyrights. You copied a sentence verbatim from John Hann's "Summary Guide", and I have removed it from the draft because that one sentence was a substantial part of the section in Worth's article about Cachipile, and in your draft. Except in clearly marked quotes, we must reword any substantantly creative content from a copyrighted work. We also are picky about what sources we can use. We generally do not accept blogs, such as "The Establishment of Catholic Missons by the Spanish Empire in North America" web site, as reliable sources, and I have tagged that source as self-published.
Unfortunately, the topic "Santa Cruz de Cachipile" has very little usable information that I have been able to find, which means an article about it will be a sub-stub. Hopefully, the results of excavations at the proposed site of the Santa Cruz mission will eventually be published in a reliable source, but that may take years. In the meantime, I have found a couple of possible sources,
- Worth, John E. (1998). Timucua Chiefdoms of Spanish Florida. Volume 2: Resistance and Destruction. University Press of Florida. ISBN 0-8130-1575-8. Retrieved November 11, 2013., and
- "Demographic Patterns and Changes in Mid-Seventeenth Century Timucua and Apalachee", by John Hann.
Unfortunately, those two add only a few bits, but not enough to expand an article beyond sub-stub status.
I recommend that you try expanding an existing article. For instance, San Pedro de Mocama currently only cites three sources (one of which is Hann's "Summary Guide"). A quick search has found the following sources that may be useful in expanding that article:
- Distribution of Contact and Mission Period Sites in the Mocama Province,
- Tacatacuru and the San Pedro de Mocama Mission,
- Grafting onto the Native Landscape The Franciscan Mission System in Northeastern Florida, and
- Pilijiriba: The End of the Native Era in the Mocama Province
I hope this will help you. Donald Albury 15:25, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the insight! I will add the existing information to the Spanish missions in Georgia wiki. GoldenArmorYeah (talk) 19:50, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- And of course, as you mentioned, be more careful with Wikipedia's rules. I will also try to expand San Pedro. GoldenArmorYeah (talk) 19:55, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello GoldenArmorYeah! Your additions to San Pedro de Mocama have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, it's important to understand and adhere to guidelines about using information from sources to prevent copyright and plagiarism issues. Here are the key points:
- Limited quotation: You may only copy or translate a small portion of a source. Any direct quotations must be enclosed in double quotation marks (") and properly cited using an inline citation. More information is available on the non-free content page. To learn how to cite a source, see Help:Referencing for beginners.
- Paraphrasing: Beyond limited quotations, you are required to put all information in your own words. Following the source's wording too closely can lead to copyright issues and is not permitted; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when paraphrasing, you must still cite your sources as appropriate.
- Image use guidelines: In most scenarios, only freely licensed or public domain images may be used and these should be uploaded to our sister project, Wikimedia Commons. In some scenarios, non-freely copyrighted content can be used if they meet all ten of our non-free content criteria; Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide may help with determining a file's elegibility.
- Copyrighted material donation: If you hold the copyright to the content you want to copy, or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license the text for publication here. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Copying and translation within Wikipedia: Wikipedia articles can be copied or translated, however they must have proper attribution in accordance with Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. For translation, see Help:Translation § License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Persistent failure to comply may result in being blocked from editing. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 21:55, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Some stroopwafels for you!
[edit]Hi neighbor! I just wanted to drop by with some cookies and express how excited I am to see someone else working on the Spanish Missions. I hope you stick with it; it's a super neglected area that badly needs some love.
Happy editing! — Moriwen (talk) 17:21, 23 September 2024 (UTC) |
- Hi there :)
- Thank you for the message. I really agree. Some of the articles on that topic haven't been updated for years, and I’m excited to keep contributing to them. I will probably be updating this article next, since I'll finally be able to visit all of the New Mexico missions this year.
- Happy editing to you as well! GoldenArmorYeah (talk) 19:41, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
Problems with citations
[edit]Please be careful when adding citations to articles. Please check the existing citations in an article before adding a new citation, as duplicate citations can cause citation errors. On December 5 you added a citation (to Worth's Summary Guide) to List of missions in Spanish Florida here that caused numerous errors to show in the References section of the article. The next day Hike395 removed that citation as a duplicate. Later the same day you added the same citation back in, again causing many errors to show on the page, which I had to remove. Also on December 6, you added the same citation to Spanish missions in Georgia, again causing many errors to show in the References section. Hike395 again removed the duplicate.
You have also been creating citations with no information other that the url. On December 7, I spent almost {https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=List_of_missions_in_Spanish_Florida&diff=1261720713&oldid=1261635966 more than an hour] cleaning up incomplete citations you had added, time I had wanted to spend on other editing in Wikipedia. You have been editing on Wikipedia for a while now, and you should no longer be depending on other editors to clean up incomplete citations for you. Please look at the guidance at Wikipedia:Citing sources and the pages it links to for instructions on how to construct citations.
As you are using Visual Editor, it creates citations with ref names in the form of :"9", which can cause problems later on. Please try to remember to convert ref names to use a name that has some connection with the source being cited instead of a digit or digits. Strictly speaking, ref names are only needed if a source is being cited more than once in an article, and may be omitted if you think it unlikely that the source will be cited again in the article. Also note that when adding citations to an article you are supposed to conform to the established style of citations used in the article. Both List of missions in Spanish Florida and Spanish missions in Georgia primarily use Template:Sfn, and any citation that is used more than once in either article should also be formatted with the Sfn template, with the full citation in the Sources section.
