Sorry about that! I thought it was a little suspect. Minus one kudos for me. Seegoon (talk) 13:43, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

That still leaves you with 99! dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 01:23, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Infiltrator! Rouge nominator!

I see you found a gaping loophole in the "don't vote on untranscluded pages" template I used. You needn't have worried, I was mostly bluffing anyway.

Just wanted to say thanks; your change of heart meant a lot to me in September, and your unsolicited co-nom means a lot to me now. Wish me luck next week. --barneca (talk) 14:20, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

You're more than welcome. Loopholes are my specialty ;) Good luck next week! dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 01:23, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
FYI, it's transcluded. Thanks again. --barneca (talk) 16:41, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I question your closure here. The debate was split 50-50 and both sides had good points. And there were only 4 participants. Why is this a keep? I hope you will consider reverting yourself and relisting the debate. Mangojuicetalk 14:41, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

At your request I've gone and taken another look at the AfD. Here's my thought process.
  • Precious Roy - Delete - Fairly weak argument, especially as notability is asserted by article itself, but more importantly by other AfD participants.
  • ElementFire - Keep - Valid argument, notes how it may not have 10000000 ghits because of the time of notability (WP:DEGRADE applies here too).
  • Mangojuice - Delete - First of all, I don't see any sort of WP:INTERESTING anywhere except in your comment, so I have no idea what that's all about. Secondly, a "amateur and unrecognized" would not be picked up by 2 notable internet radio services including iTunes. Thirdly, notability can be asserted without sources.
  • Jerry - Keep - Clearly stated that the article meets a criterion of a notability guideline, which indeed it does. Despite the Digitally Imported related discussion, you can't say no to him being on iTunes too. Putting that aside, the notability of DI is asserted (AfD that article if you disagree) so I really don't see how it's a non-notable service, especially when Jerry's sources in favour of this are countered by "no search engine".
So that's my logic behind the closure. You're welcome to add a link to this diff on the AfD, or DRV if you still agree. Regards, dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 01:23, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
The closer's job is to recognize the outcome of the debate, not to choose a side. There wasn't consensus on this, and your decision was based on your own opinion, so I will open a DRV seeking to relist. Your analysis of the debate is a fine opinion but it doesn't describe the outcome of the debate. Mangojuicetalk 14:34, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
The DRV is at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2008 February 1#DJ River Mangojuicetalk 14:46, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
I relisted the discussion. Generally, if a criterion listed in a notability guideline is disputed, it will come down to sourcing. What the criteria lists in the notability guidelines say is basically: "If the subject fulfills criterion X, we're reasonably sure that sufficient independent sources on the subject exist for us to write an article, even if we can't access them right now." So if there is a controversial discussion about a criterion, the side opting to keep must ultimately back up the claim by providing sources. ~ trialsanderrors (talk) 16:33, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

2 Rome: Total War mods worth mentioning?

Wouldn't it be worth mentioning the Europa Barbarorum and Rome: Total Realism mods somewhere on the article page? These 2 seem notable enough to be worth mentioning out of all the others that were removed. BrokenSphereMsg me 16:56, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

OK, I'll undo so that only those two are noted. The section itself needs more context though. I'll trust you on notability. dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 00:11, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

The article is Ok, I guess (the writing is pretty poor, though). I plan on rewriting everything using Fornication: The Red Hot Chili Peppers Story. There are tons of things missing that need to be included. To keep the same text and simply add what's missing would mean I'd have to run through everything and check the sources over and over (which is more tedious then a rewrite) because the article has been marinating in IP-and-unregistered-user edits for almost a year. But I'm glad to have you aboard! NSR77 TC 17:05, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Re: Legacies

I'm don't doubt you're having a harder time with AoE than Halo- it's another entire subject. Still, I suggest trying Google Scholar (prolly a lot of false positives, but maybe stuff like this can help). Lots of the stuff was random bits me and a couple others of WP:HALO pulled out from random searches. Still, I think your best bet is trying to search for "Age of Empires" plus "revolutionary" and that sort- after all, the games certainly are well-known, maybe reviewers have noted that other games copped stuff from AoE or summat' like that. Also, perhaps you can tie in the fact that Ensemble Studios made the AoE series to the fact that they were selected to create Halo Wars [1] - I'm pretty sure Bungie commented on that right after the X06 announcement, you might have to go digging through the weekly updates to find it though. David Fuchs (talk) 01:20, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

waitaminute, was that a knock at Halo? ;) Here's what I meant about the Halo Wars thing- "Our trusted friends at Ensemble, who have more than a few super successful RTS under their belt, are handling it beautifully."- archive at Halo.Bungie.Org David Fuchs (talk) 01:27, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
oh, and more relevant: "In case you're unfamiliar with them, they're responsible for the highly awesometastic Age of Empires series. I have personally wasted hundreds, maybe thousands of hours of my life playing various iterations of AoE - mostly Conquerors and AoE 3 - so I'm excited to see what Ensemble can do to realize the original vision of Halo, which was in fact an RTS, then a third person action and then finally the FPS that we know and love today."
Looks good, I made a minor change. David Fuchs (talk) 02:05, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
What's the issue with GFDL? But don't worry, just PM me or put it up for speedy and it will be gone. David Fuchs (talk) 02:20, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Potential DYK

I just created By the Fireside, which I was astounded was not already created, and have found an absolute goldmine of information about the guy, his EPs and album and was wondering if you would mind giving me a hand deciphering info and DYKing him, and then creating and GAing the article about his album? It's a bit of fun to go on the side, because I'm just astounded there wasn't even an article about him before. Care to lend a hand? Oh, and ATGD still needs some work, but I keep looking at it and don't know where to start, want to give that a look into also? Thanks mate. --rm 'w avu 13:07, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I'll get on to ATGD; I work better with stuff I know about! I'll help with yours a bit too (but busy now). dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 03:18, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Sweet deal. Is there a time limit on how old an article needs to be (by old, I mean young) to be DYK? I want to expand on his article, as well as create the three others (the EPs and the album). Anyway, ATGD really needs some thorough looking over before we launch the FL/GA. I was thinking about it and I think it does qualify as a FL. One thing we need to do is add the support acts to the actual itinerary. About half of them are on the atgd website, so we'd just need to copy them, and we should be able to figure out who played on the other nights anyway. What do you think? --rm 'w avu 09:32, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
It is clearly an article, not a list. If there was a separate article, like List of tour dates of the Across the Great Divide tour, it would be a list, but this is about the tour, not just its tour dates. Spebi 09:48, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
DYK

The limit is 5 days, but it’s best to nominate it ASAP (at T:TDYK). I wouldn’t bother in creating the albums etc. now; just try and expand his as much as possible first (I never actually created album articles for Small Mercies in the end, actually…).

Okay, will do, but I'll definitely create a "musical style", "bio" and "discography" section, since between all of the abundance of references, these three things could very easily be created. I think I will create the album article, since most of the conjecture is directly relevant to that release, rather than the EPs (okay, the real reason is I can't find info on the EPs, nor their track listings). It'll be pretty easy and very much supports the guy's article too. Maybe I'll add a RD for Danial Lea, too... --rm 'w avu 05:26, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Sounds like a plan. Good luck mate. dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 08:41, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
ATGD

I agree with Spebi. Ideally, it’d have a lot more prose-article-content about the reasons behind the tour, etc. That isn’t a reason not to add support acts to the list though; go ahead. dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 23:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm short on time atm, what with moving house, full time parenting and a full time job, but I'll do what I can with regards to that. --rm 'w avu 05:26, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

What do I do?

Okay my articles suck. I need some help on collecting information. My Banya: The Explosive Delivery Man I think just nearly escaped deletion. But the problem is I'm working with limited resources. I've read only two volumes and sadly my parents don't trust me enough so I can't go to .coms and .orgs. I can only go to sights they choose. Which means Wikipedia because its education and any other .edu or .gov.

So, what do I do? I want to create articles, but when I'm working with limited sources I'm going to get into so much trouble. —Preceding unsigned comment added by X27 (talkcontribs) 06:07, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry to hear about your personal circumstances. Regretfully, I can't reall think of much else you can do in assert notability. Banya: The Explosive Delivery Man, at the moment, doesn't seem to assert that it's notable enough to be kept :( That said, I really don't know what you can do about it considering your internet issues... :( dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 08:26, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Deletion and notability

With regard to your comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ruby Terrill Lomax, you appear to be confusing WP:AFD and WP:CSD; assertion of notability has nothing to do with AfD at all. At AfD, articles must demonstrate their subject's notability (with multiple, non-trivial, independent, reliable sources, per WP:N). — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 15:20, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I said that the notability was asserted by the article. Would that not equate to it being demonstrated? I'm very sorry to have used the wrong word. dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 09:02, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Jeff Fatt image

Hello to you--Regarding your note to me on my talk page about the image on Jeff's article: the owner, who probably doesn't know any better, assured me that it was free. Of course, she's mildly scarily-obsessive about Jeff enough to run his fan page at MySpace. I mean, I think Jeff is cute, too, but she's downright weird about it. She has great pictures over there, though, and she's been over-the-top generous with them. I don't want any appearance of non-free images (look at my archived talk page, and you'd see how I learned), so I'll look for something a bit more obviously free. --Figureskatingfan (talk) 23:41, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

David L Cook article

I appreciate you reviewing the David L Cook article. I have fixed the things you have asked for and would like to see if I could get you to go back and look at it again in case something has been forgotten. I think over all the article is well written and in pretty good shape. I would like to get it reconsidered so that I can move onto other articles. If you see something that needs to be fixed, if you could give me an example to look at I would appreciate it. Thank youCanyouhearmenow 14:04, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

I fixed a great number of the things you asked me to fix. I also had a few issues with some of the things because I did not either understand what you were getting at or I felt that they were not under the conditions you were placing them under. I am not sure. But, for those things I had an issue with, I place a response next to the request. If you don't mind I would appreciate you taking a look. Thank you Canyouhearmenow 14:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
We did a major overhaul on this article today. I worked with an admin to put this article into a format that should pass GA standards. I have reviewed other articles that are currently in GA status and I do feel that this one is just as good, if not better in some instances! I knnow each article is judged based on it's merits, but given the condition of Christian music articles in general, I have to say that this one is far above the rest in merit and standards. I will look forward to working with you on this. I just want to get it to GA standards so I can start workinng on another one and put this one to bed! LOL Canyouhearmenow 22:32, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

It's good to be back although I was never really away, just not as active as usual. It wasn't a real break as such, just a step back from some of the procedural areas of the wiki that were taking up way too much time and were not particularly enjoyable. Silverchair addition

Wow! That was quick work! I'd definitely say that's a great start. If I had to critique it, I would say that you're kind of substituting critic's opinions of the band's music for analysis of their style. I guess what I mean by that is that reviews seem like the wrong place to gain good information on the band's sound, since ultimately a review is written in such away to state (and justify) the reviewer's opinion. It's written argumentatively, rather than analytically. The All Music Guide quotes, on the other hand, are much more in the right direction. For the best example of what I mean, take a look at the similar section at Nine Inch Nails, an article I worked on extensively a while back. It relies on a more varied source of information: interviews, write-ups, one or two reviews, as well as indisputable musical facts like the use of odd time-signatures, dissonance, motifs, stuff like that. I don't know if any of what I said made any sense. However, the big caveat to all of that, is that I'd say what you've done so far is good enough for GA. So I suppose if you see what I'm trying to say, and you take these suggestions into account, great, but if not, then I wouldn't hold it against the articles GAN, since it's definitely a step in the right direction. Drewcifer (talk) 10:06, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

I disagree with this and think it is an unfair parody of the more sensible viewpoints in the discussions. That said, I was laughing very hard after I read it. Well done. JoshuaZ (talk) 16:33, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

A question about GA reviewing

I noticed a response (diff) you got after writing a (very thorough, by the way) GA review on Daddy Yankee, as I've been watching it for a while. I got a similar one after reviewing In Rainbows, telling me that I should simply correct the mechanical issues I noted in the review. Now I'm wondering: what (if any) is consensus on reviewers correcting these types of errors? I thought you might know, as you have <ahem>quite</ahem> a bit of experience in this area. WikiProject Brisbane

Just a reminder that WikiProject Brisbane needs your help. There have been a number of changes to the project page over recent days and I hope you could spare some time to take a look, be bold and add some touches yourself.

There is plenty that needs to be done to get more Brisbane articles up to FA standard. Please come and discuss this and lets see if we can build up this project.

Hey, I know it has been awhile since you reviewed The Corrs and promoted it to WP:GA status. I've worked on your suggestions and expanded the article. Carrie Underwood discography

Hey, I really don't want to drag you into this, but I don't seem to have any choice. I've nominated this article for WP:FLC, and as a result, made drastic changes to the article to meet the criteria.

User:I7114080 was unhappy with the recent changes made with article had expressed his opinion on this page. I would like for you to read his concerns and voice your opinion, because I'm nearly on the verge of breaking point... As there is still some dispute over what the article should look like, do you reckon I should cancel the WP:FLC nomination and work with him together before re-nominating? Or should I get other users and have a concensus? Please help. Cheer

Eek...I'd rather not get overly involved. My advice, if you will, is to leave a note at WT:FLC...see if that does any good. I'm not sure how many people watch there. If nothing eventuates out of that, just let it go, keep talking to the user, and try and reach a compromise. If you can't, and if they're being dickish about it, you can move up the DR tree if you really want too...I'd rather not, but I'm a bit of a pacifist. :) Anyways, I don't think the current FLC has huge hopes unless someone points out to the other guy what's happening, and that they accept it. Good luck, dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 08:40, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

The Original Barnstar
Dihydrogen Monoxide, well where do I start? There's a question. You've been an extraordinarily assistance to me over the past few months, and the recent RFA I underwent (okay, maybe not that recent!) really showed me the character that you so precisely epitomise. Your friendly indiviudality that sets you so apart from the rest of the community fulfills me with appropriate hope that one day you'll be becoming an administrator (not that you probably need it mind, demonstrated by the so many months of dedication you've put in) especially with tough resilliance you've displayed since the first couple of RFAs a couple of seasons ago, with me even opposing. Shocking really. You've become a true person who I have come to admire and respect at the same time which is like no other relation I have with another member of the community (jeez, this is starting to sound like a love letter) *Rudget dashes under a table*. But, yeah, well done. :) Rudget. 16:13, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

EBot IV

Hello! I noticed you were replying to queries on User:E's talkpage while he is in hospital, so I decided to address this issue directly to you. I was wondering if you know how User:EBot IV updates the users' statuses (online or offline), I mean, based on what does it do that? Because as far as I see, the bot updates my last edits, but I never seem to be actually "online" according to it. So if you know based on what the bot changes the statuses, I'd be happy if you let me know :-)  ARTYOM  16:11, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware from the time I spent using StatusBot (which EBot IV is similar to), it works based on the time since your last edit. If it doesn't show you as online, chances are it's broken (file a bug report through instructions at User talk:E) or you're just not editing often enough! I think StatusBot said you were offline after 5 (or maybe 15?) minutes. Hope this helps! dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 04:22, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Writing for the Signpost

Hello. You expressed interest in writing for the Wikipedia Signpost (sorry for the delay in responding). I'm sending this message to everyone who commented, so if you have any questions I haven't answered, please feel free to ask me, and I'll try to respond to specific questions.

Essentially, what I'm looking for is writers who can step in and write on subjects that are newsworthy from week-to-week. The content of the stories obviously varies each week depending on what's happening; this is discussed below.

There are three major parts to writing an article:

  1. Choosing a topic
  2. Writing the article
  3. Submitting the article

Part 1: Choosing a topic

As said above, topics will vary from week-to-week. For this week, these particular issues may be newsworthy:

  • Bureaucratship candidacies — There are a lot of bureaucratship candidacies this week, for the first time in about six or seven months. I'm personally covering this one for next week, but this is a good example of what might be newsworthy.
  • Encyclopedia of Life — This encyclopedia of species has been getting some press, and relates somewhat to Wikimedia project Wikispecies.
  • Hidden categories — For those technically inclined, this is a new feature that has some interesting implications.

For more ideas, and for ideas in the future, check the tip-line -- there are usually some good ideas there.

Once you've decided on a topic, make sure to sign up for it in the newsroom, under "Special stories", so that users aren't duplicating each others' work (though multiple writers are certainly free to work together on a story).

Part 2: Writing the article

Now, you've decided on a topic and signed up for it. To write it, create a subpage in your userspace. For my story this week on the bureaucratship candidacies, for example, I'll create it at User:Ral315/Bureaucratship candidacies. The name isn't a big deal, of course -- I'll change it if necessary.

Formatting the story isn't important; for your first article, you should mainly focus on writing a good story, and I'll take care of the formatting when we publish. Try to write it in a newspaper-like tone, avoiding personal comments and opinions in favor of straight-forward facts. The size of an article varies based on what the story is, but a good minimum goal for most stories is two-to-three good paragraphs. Longer articles are even better, so long as they're well-written.

Part 3: Submitting the article

Now, all you have to do is post a link to the article in the newsroom, where you signed up for it earlier. That's it! You're done!

Again, if you have any questions at all, please contact me, and I'll try to respond as soon as possible.

Thanks for your interest in writing for the Signpost. Ral315 (talk) 03:08, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
