Recent changes

  • The mobile web will get more advanced editing tools. Seven more Wikipedias can use them now. This works for Arabic, Indonesian, Italian, Persian, Japanese, Spanish and Thai Wikipedia. You can try the tools on the mobile web and give feedback. [1]

Changes later this week

  • Advanced item The abuse filter system user will soon do maintenance edits on broken abuse filters. This user is called Edit filter and has administrator rights. This is meant to fix technical problems. It will not do any other changes. You can read more.
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 July. It will be on all wikis from 18 July (calendar).

Future changes

  • The Wikipedia app for Android will invite users to add image captions to images on Commons. It will only invite users who have added a number of edits in the app without being reverted. This is to avoid spam and bad edits. You can read more and leave feedback. [2]

Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.

Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:

Recent releases

The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:

  1. Section editing
    • The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
    • The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were 1% more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
  2. Loading overlay
    • The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.

New and active projects

This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.

  • Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
  • Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
  • Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
  • Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use.  The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.

Looking ahead

  • Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
  • Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.

"Non-RS"?

Hello @Daehan:, non-RS meant "not a reliable source". Personal websites, blogs and blog-like sites are generally not considered reliable sources (see also WP:RS for more information). Sorry for the confusion with the abbreviation, it's just easier to type in short summaries when one is making a lot of routine edits. Hello @Bargalon:, and welcome to Wikipedia. Entries in such lists are usually restricted to "notable" topics (in Wikipedia's own sense of the term). A "notable" topic should have been covered by several independent reliable sources in some detail, and already have a stand-alone article on Wikipedia that is based on such independent sources. You'll find more information about the concept of Wikipedia-"notability" at WP:GNG. Also, if you are connected to the added project, please make sure to read WP:COI about editing with a possible conflict of interest.

This is with respect to my edit which you removed at HTTP Live Streaming. I think rather than undoing my change you removed the entire line. The link earlier was incorrect and I was providing the most relevant link I could think of (the company's homepage). I am new, can you please provide a clarifiation or suggest on how to fix it.

Hello @Vrmaroli:, the entry had 2 issues: Wikipedia generally does not use external links in the main text of its articles (see WP:EL). Secondly, entries in Wikipedia lists are usually restricted to Wiki-"notable" topics, that is topics which already have a sourced stand-alone article on Wikipedia - that's why I removed the entire entry. Hope this helps a bit to clarify the reasoning, but please feel free to ask if you have further questions (see also the blue links for more details). Hello, I couldn't find any reliable sources about this specific Wiki on a quick search. If you want to try writing an article about it, you'll need to look for at least 2-3 published reliable sources that meet the criteria at WP:GNG and WP:RS. If such sources don't exist, it won't be possible to write a Wikipedia article about this Wiki unfortunately. I don't have time to look into the topic more closely, but hope these tips and links help a bit (WP:Teahouse is also a good forum for new editors, if you get stuck and need any advice about Wikipedia editing). Question on fNIRS section.

I see you removed my addition to the fNIRS section on the BCI page. Hello @DvdPutte:, such claims without sufficient references are always a problem. But Wikipedia is an imperfect work in progress with many flaws and areas in need of improvement (see also Wikipedia:Other stuff exists). All subjective and exceptional claims need a direct reference to an independent high-quality expert source, explicitly verifying such claims. Please feel free to improve other instances if you notice similar problems (by adding an appropriate source or rephrasing the content where needed). GermanJoe (talk) 11:50, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Bulleted publications lists

Hi GermanJoe: I have no problem with your edit to Clyde Wahrhaftig (thanks!), but because I'm interested in details of documentation, could you point out to me where/if the preference for bullets is documented? Hello @Finney1234:, it is briefly mentioned at Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Lists#Use_an_unordered_list_by_default (and described as "the most common list type" at WP:BULLETLIST). The bullets just add another visible distinction for each list entry, and usually make lists with short texts a bit more structured and accessible. Plain lists are sometimes used in infoboxes though - and probably a few other use cases, I don't remember at the moment :). GermanJoe (talk) 20:44, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
Hi GermanJoe: per note, I think your edit is fine, but FWIW, it is recommended that lists of publications be placed in chronological order, earliest first, so it's not an "unordered" list (WP:Manual_of_Style/Lists_of_works#Bibliographies). That said, it's not a numbered list either, so either bullets or bulletless strikes me as fine (i.e., a matter of personal esthetics not specified by the MOS). Thanks. Actually, WP:Manual_of_Style/Layout#works explictly states "Contents: A bulleted list, usually ordered chronologically, of the works created by the subject of the article.", so you are absolutely correct.   • There will be no Tech News issue next week. The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 2 September 2019.

Problems

  • Advanced item Some abuse filters stopped working because of a code change. Only variables for the current action will work. Variables defined inside a branch may not work outside of that branch. You can read more to see how to fix the filters.
  • Only six accounts can be created from one IP address per day. Between 12 August and August 15 this was two accounts per day. This was because of a security issue. It is now six accounts per day again. [16]

  • Only a limited number of accounts can be created from one IP address. An IP address can be whitelisted so that it can create as many accounts as needed. This is useful at events where many new persons learn to edit. IP addresses that are whitelisted for this reason will also not show CAPTCHAs when you create accounts. This will happen on Wednesday. If you believe the topic doesn't meet Wikipedia's "notability" requirements, please read WP:PROD / WP:AFD and follow one of these venues to suggest its deletion - any editor is welcome to suggest such steps in good faith. Its certainly a borderline case (imo), but without Italian-language knowledge the sources are difficult to assess and the current stub isn't overly promotional. So I won't pursue this issue myself. Hello @Gebruiker tvb:, thank you for following Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines. Regarding these lists, the basic inclusion criterion for product lists is usually an existing, sourced Wikipedia article that must be based on multiple, independent reliable sources with significant coverage and written in a non-promotional, encyclopedic language. You'll find detailed information about article creation on Wikipedia at WP:Your first article. As an editor with a conflict of interest you can prepare such a draft in draftspace, but it's a difficult task and the draft must meet all basic Wikipedia content guidelines (most importantly good sources and a neutral, non-promotional tone).
I noticed that Jimfbleak provided additional useful tips on your user talkpage which cover all important possible hurdles, but please feel free to ask if you have further specific questions (either a volunteer via talk or at WP:Teahouse, a help forum for new editors). If you'd like to suggest changes for an existing article or list, you are also welcome to post a sourced edit request on the article's associated talkpage. Best regards. Hello, generally all contributions and communication on English Wikipedia are supposed to be in English - to allow easy communication and transparency for all English-language speakers in this project. I don't want to sound discouraging, but if the language is a major problem, you might prefer contributing to our sister project in German. The main page for the German-language Wikipedia is located at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Hauptseite.
But to briefly answer your original question: entries in such lists on English Wikipedia usually should have an article written first. Such articles or drafts must be based on multiple independent, reliable sources. Also, if you have a conflict of interest regarding this topic (for example as employee, developer or paid editor), please make sure to read WP:COI (and disclose this connection at least on the article's talkpage). You can create drafts as the one in Draft:BssEditor (it needs sources though), but such a draft must be reviewed by an uninvolved editor before it can be published. Hope these tips are helpful. Recent changes

  • You can use the new termbox interface if you edit Wikidata on a mobile device. This is to edit labels, descriptions and aliases easier on the mobile pages. [19]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki has been deployed during the last week.
  • The previously announced change of positions of the "Wikidata item" link on all wikis has been rollbacked due to unexpected cache issues. [20]
  • The limit for rollbacks has been increased from 10 to 100 rollbacks per minute. [21]
  • The advanced version of the edit review pages (Recent Changes, Watchlist, and Related Changes) now include two new filters. These filters are for "All contents" and "All discussions". They will filter the view to just those namespaces. However the "All discussions" filter does not include pseudo talk pages, like discussions that are in the Project: or Wikipedia: namespaces. But it will include changes happening on Project talk: or the Wikipedia talk:. [22]

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 September. It will be on all wikis from 5 September (calendar).
  • When you log in, the software checks your password to see if it follows the Password policy. From this week, it will also complain if your password is one of the most common passwords in the world. If your password is not strong enough, please consider to change your password for a stronger password. [23]

Hello. Regarding the diff above I used the phrase 'This is already the case in most countries in the world', that is clearly a mistake on my part. The correct phrase should be 'This is already the case in at least seventy five countries worldwide'. This phrase is directly supported by the ref: [1]

The second ref I added was for information already in the article but without a citation. Instead of lazily adding a citation needed tag, I looked it up and found it already existed on the Wiki elsewhere: Mayor#Artificial_intelligence_mayors but that entry was also slightly inaccurate so I researched and edited it too. If you think the Otaquest ref[2] is not reliable perhaps you prefer this: [3] Note: I delibrately did not use the tabloid(RT and Mirror) citations that existed in the original entry but being a reluctant to delete refs added by someone else I did not remove them either.

Regarding reliability, I would recommend to read WP:RS: good sources should be independent (as far as possible), written by acknowledged experts, and have some kind of editorial oversight and reputation for fact-checking (and of course the article content should reflect the source as closely as possible). All editors are welcome to make "bold" good-faith edits usually following the WP:BRD cycle to achieve consensus - you don't need my permission to do so :). Hope these tips are helpful. Best regards. Regarding an image on unlimited scrolling on social media newsfeeds

I see you removed an image I added at https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Social_media#Physical_and_mental_health that shows how the brain has to continuously process information. According to your note, I have changed the text in the image to be neutral and reuploaded it. But I see that you have still removed it. Please let me know the reason and how we can go about this.

Hello @JzG:, thank you for the offer. I'd be glad to help out with admin anti-spam tasks, or other maintenance tasks where I already have some experience like copyvio handling, WP:UAA and WP:AIV. One point though: I haven't done much content work in recent years (I was active in FA-reviewing for several years though, and still do occasional article cleanup and structure fixes). I have briefly thought about an RfA once or twice, but considering the negative view of some users about editors who focus on maintenance tasks I wasn't sure about my net chances. Anyway, I am willing to give it a try - and you are correct of course, some of the admin tools would be really useful for me to contribute in these areas. I know GermanJoe largely fromt he spam-blacklist, where he is a valued contributor who makes regular well-formed reports. Thank you for the kind words - looks fine. It would probably be good to proactively mention the content work in early years (but I can do so in the standard questions of course). Editors with a strong focus on this aspect seem to expect a good knowledge about article creation and basic content guidelines (a legitimate concern to a certain point). I believe I have a good grasp on all these principles, even though I am technically not a "content creator" at the moment. Openly addressing this point and mentioning my past FA-reviewing could help to alleviate such concerns from the get go. My most comprehensive content work, aside from improving several FA-reviewed articles, would probably be Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor where I revised the complete referencing and large parts of the content since 2012. -- Or am I too concerned about possible "must be an editor with several featured and good articles" arguments? Talk Pages

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Edit Cards

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.

Toolbar

The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.
  • In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
    • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
    • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
    • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
  • Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

Looking ahead

  • Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.

Meaningless removal of content

hy Joe, i saw your message and saw that you said my content is irrelevant. Ok, I posted those info. on wikipedia so large no. of people can take benefit of it. And those tips are proven to be benefitial.

Have you tried them? They are genuine tips and i am not creating spam over here. I added citation so people can visit that site and can take benefit of information available there.

But please note that content on Wikipedia must be verifiable, based on published reliable sources. Content without such sources just based on personal knowledge is generally not suitable for inclusion. If you'd like to suggest further changes or edit unprotected pages yourself, please make sure to skim through the blue-linked guidelines first to avoid getting your suggestions and edits rejected. You'll find a technical guide about "how to" add references at WP:REFB, but if you feel unsure about all these templates you can simply provide a link or some bibliographical details to such a reliable expert source. Hello @Mathimanu:, Wikipedia articles cannot serve as reference (Wikipedia does not consider itself a reliable source). So you should generally not add URLs to Wikipedia articles as reference. However, you can re-use and copypaste reliable sources from within such articles, if you need them for additional topics and have double-checked their reliability for the given content. And if you just want to link to a different Wikipedia article for informational purposes, you should use a Wiki-link somewhere in the text instead (formatted as article name here). Hello @Wishallmenon:, the posted information on your user talkpage was primarily for your information "just in case" it might apply. If you don't have a connection to the company (for example as employee or paid editor), that's fine of course. Some of the new information in the article seems a bit promotional though (for example: the company's "claims" about their market share are irrelevant unless an independent publication verifies them) and/or overly detailed (for example the "Investments" section including every single minor step of the funding process), but these are content-related concerns that can be resolved via normal editing. Do-not dodge this question: Why did you not question user:"Manuaero" for conflict of interest, who is clearly Founder & CEO of LabelBox Inc. Your answer to this question cannot be some lame excuse "Wikepedia is full of COIs and I cannot fix them all". The fact that you questioned some editors and not all for COI raises suspicion that you are being paid by those listed on this page. If there is some genuine information (supported by genuine references) that readers of the article deserve to be informed, that information should be allowed irrespective of COI. I did indeed inform Manuaero about our COI guidelines (see User talk:Manuaero) just as I posted on your user talkpage. And their entry was discussed on the article's talkpage and accepted by uninvolved editors - albeit as a borderline case that was close to being deleted (see Talk:List of manual image annotation tools). The Labelbox entry has 1 OK-ish independent source, your entry has none so far. If you find better sources for your edit, you can suggest an addition as edit request on article talk anytime.
But this debate and the personal accusations are getting rather unconstructive. If you want to continue the content-related discussion about your edit, please use Talk:List of manual image annotation tools instead. If you believe that I am being paid by Labelbox or some other company - a ridiculous and unfounded bad-faith allegation -, please feel free to ask an uninvolved administrator for additional advice. Recent changes

  • You can post proposals for the Community Wishlist Survey. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can post proposals until 11 November. You can vote on proposals from 20 November to 2 December. This year the wishlist will focus on Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage and Wikinews. You can read more about the format for this year.
  • Mobile users now have a specific design for their Watchlist. [41][42]
  • You can share feedback and ideas on the Desktop Improvements project. The goal is to make the interface easier to use for readers and editors without removing any functionality. The Foundation's Readers Web team will work on this over the next two years.
  • Advanced item OOUI now allows using px (pixels) instead of em (em) for some specific cases. [43][44]

Changes later this week

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 October. It will be on all wikis from 31 October (calendar).

  • There will be no software changes from 19 December to 2 January. The first MediaWiki version next year will come the week of 6 January. [45]
  • Advanced item Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015, this information was moved from global variables named wg* to mw.config. The old global variables will be removed later this year. You can know more about it and tell the developers if you want to try this out on your wiki first.
