GOCE March drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)

GOCE March drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (Talk), Stfg (Talk), and Dank (talk)

GOCE May mid-drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

I'm going to overhaul this article shortly (I added a new lede and expanded the infobox a few weeks ago). Is there a particular section of this article you might be interested in expanding? If not, I'll get started on the whole thing. Bms4880 (talk) 19:55, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Just checking some dates: Sevier was given the rank of captain by Lord Dunmore in 1774; lieutenant-colonel in Washington County militia (by North Carolina) in 1777, colonel commandant in 1781. Does this sound correct? Bms4880 (talk) 21:03, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Some of that sounds about right. I just moved to a new city and state, books and everything else still in boxes. Got the internet connected 30 minutes ago. Go with what you have and if necessary change later.GenQuest (talk) 01:53, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Our edit dispute at Lookout Mounatin

You reverted my edit as "unconstructive". Can you confirm that you are happy with the contents of Lookout_Mountain#Seven_states? The claim that the 7 states claim has not been proved scientifically can be referenced at [2], and the sign distance errors can easily be verified using Google Earth. Why is it unconstructive to point them out? Viewfinder (talk) 21:59, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

The picture caption is not the place to state or expand upon the dated claim of the marker as to the ability to see seven states from that spot. The body of the article addresses that issue. The caption is a simple statement of fact regarding the marker (hence the word "claims" in the caption).
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and many visitors, myself included, often look at page pictures, and by extension captions, without reading article bodies. It follows that incorrect picture claims proliferate misinformation, and that it is in order for us at Wikipedia to use captions to challenge such claims. If you persist with your view that it is not, can you point to guidelines in support of your position? If not, I think that we should ask for guidelines. Re this Lookout image, it would be sufficient for the single word "dated" to precede the word "claims", but I still think that the caption should include words "understated distances". Viewfinder (talk) 10:13, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
I added "wrongfully claims". That succinctly addresses the issue, I think, with out over-burdening the caption with verbiage. That should lead any picture-grazer to read the article for more details. Let me know how that reads. Thanks.
Dispute resolved, cheers. Viewfinder (talk) 16:09, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I'm Ratzd'mishukribo. GenQuest, thanks for creating John Wesley Hardin in popular culture!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Might do as a section of John Wesley Hardin, but not as a separate article.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

I removed that section FROM the main article as it is trivial pop culture that has little to do with the article's subject. GenQuest (talk) 16:58, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

The War Z

I notice that you claim to have filed an AfD for this article. However, no such request has been filed, according to the AfD log. You may want to try that again - at the moment there's just a PROD. Since, if a PROD template is deleted by anyone for any reason (or no reason), it should not be replaced, I suspect that's not what you intended? Anaxial (talk) 18:04, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

Usually the one who makes the nomination will do it, but since it is so old, you can do it. If you have the reliable sources from your research for your book, then by all means proceed. I would caution you to be careful of Wikipedia:Original research tho. Also, If you need help, let me know.I can help you through the process. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 21:33, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Your request for rollback

Hi GenQuest. After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Yunshui  14:45, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. Will use wisely. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 19:19, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi GenQuest, thanks for all your hard work, I just hope it was on the right article. I am checking and don't want to state the obvious, but I wouldn't want you wasting your time on the wrong article. The one that you good editors should be concentrating on is Normandy Youth Club - The N-Factor because that is a Start-Class and would benefit from improving. The one that is Stub-Class is The N Factor Normandy Youth Club (and I am very sorry as a newperson on here, I don't know how it has duplicated the other article). The reason why I explain all this is because I think you have done a lot of good work on the wrong article.(Ladytwentytwo (talk) 17:08, 1 February 2013 (UTC))

Regarding your article Lynn Stewart (disambiguation)

GenQuest, wanted to give you a heads up regarding the work you have been doing on the Lynn Stewart (disambiguation) article. Per my translation of WP:APODAB, this article should actually be titled Lynn Stewart. I'm going to see if an administrator is willing to move Lynn Stewart (disambiguation) to Lynn Stewart per a request on Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests (due to this move being rather technical in nature), and if that move does not get approved (due to possibly not being "technical" enough), moving the move discussion to Wikipedia:Requested moves. Steel1943 (talk) 03:07, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Actually, I'm putting it straight onto Wikipedia:Requested moves, since I realized the move might be considered controversial. You will find the discussion here. Steel1943 (talk) 03:11, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. Do whatever needs to be done. I tried to use the Lynn Stewart existing redirect as the article. I tried killing the redirect of Lynn Stewart (then pointing at Lynne Stewart the radical attorney), but when I made the article, the redirect kept taking over when I tried to navigate to the page. Maybe because it's been in place for so long? It was the weirdest thing; and that's why I named it the way I did. Hope you guys can hammer it out. Let me know if you need me to do anything. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 04:07, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
It's been done. JHunterJ performed the moved due to its technical nature. The reason why the move could not have been done by a non-administrator is due to what is outlined in WP:MOR; by the time these two articles were created, there was already more than one line in the edit history of Lynn Stewart. The only options you would have had was to make Lynn Stewart the true disambiguation article by doing a copy/paste (which is frowned upon), or made Lynn Stewart the original disambiguation page. Anyways, it has been resolved now. Steel1943 (talk) 19:11, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

February 2013

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Cypriot intercommunal violence a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Hi; just to note that Tache is a redirect to Tache-with-an-accent; and that Tache (Indian reserve) may have an official IR name, I'll look that up shortly. unaccented Tache would seem to need to be a secondary dab page because of the accent on the other one; the alternative name Tachie gives an indication of how it's pronounced in Carrie/Dakelh and in local English; I think that's probably an "sh" sound rather than "tsh"....please reply my talkpage, if at all.Skookum1 (talk) 10:36, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

this is the reserve's official name/status, though the name is much older than the Indian Reserve system of course....the current format for such a title would be Tache 1 though I have objections to that as that's the Frenchform name...Tache Indian Reserve No. 1 or similar would be the usual MOSTCOMMON name in English; but that begs the question, does that go on the Tache-accent disambig page, or on a separate one?Skookum1 (talk) 10:42, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Cryptome

Hi! Why this change? I find it much easier to edit if template arguments are expanded, e.g.

{{cite web
| url=
| ...

as opposed to {{cite web|url=...}}. Btw, what does "c/e" mean? Copy-editing? -- 2A03:3680:0:3:0:0:0:67 (talk) 02:11, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello, 2A03. Yes, c/e is copy edit. The style for references is actually one line, with the pipes, so that the page doesn't become ungodly long. Putting them in expanded as you did is fine also, but they may well be one-lined eventually by somebody. There is also an option under your preference settings to change the color of the refs and other wiki-coded elements, which makes it easier to edit once you get used to it. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 04:47, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, the page gets only "longer" when in edit-mode, it's not like linebreaks would cost a lot more diskspace to save :-) Colored formatting helpers may help, thanks, but I tend to prefer structure over color. Anyway, thanks for your input. -- 2A03:3680:0:3:0:0:0:67 (talk) 10:11, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

President-Head of State

Hi GenQuest, I think [6] was too quick. The change done by the IP user is IMO correct. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 20:13, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

You may be right; I was back-tracking a disruptive IP editor and may have reverted his one good edit out of thirty. Assume you corrected. ThanX. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 00:20, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
Actually, I took the time to check the article, and I think "Heads of State" does fit the section better than "Presidents," as the former encompasses the contents of that table better—their having been colonial governors, juntas, "Supreme Leaders", etc. running the country in the past. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 00:51, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, I don't know. There are three reasons for President:

  • the title promises a list of Presidents and now the reader gets a list of Head of States.
  • In Chile the wo/man at the top is always Head of State and Head of government. Both.
  • Under this name (List of Heads of State) who was Head of government, for example, in 1965?

--Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 18:27, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

C/E tag at Nantucket

Hi GenQuest, I note that you placed a (c/e tagged) designation at Nantucket. I've not seen this tag before, although I find many articles have copy editing issues. Is this tag simply an exhortation for other editors to improve the copy of the article or is there a cadre of experienced copy editors for whom this is a digital marker for them to find and work on? I'll look for your reply, here. Sincerely, User:HopsonRoad 23:16, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Merge clarification requested

Hi GenQuest. Per this, Bloody Christmas (1963) should be merged. But the article is still there. Could you please clarify its status? Thank you. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 19:05, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

It was apparently reverted with this edit and this edit too. Unknown as to why. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 23:58, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you GenQuest. Your first link points to a revert which was on a different page, (Cypriot_intercommunal_violence due to cut-and-paste), not on the actual Bloody Christmas article. But the second link is correct and the revert happened today. Can you explain on what basis it was decided that Bloody Christmas (1963) had to be redirected and merged to Cypriot intercommunal violence? Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 00:41, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
My bad. That other was a re-naming move I had made that you reverted and which we have discussed prior to this. The incomplete merge of Bloody Christmas into Cypriot intercommunal violence was made by an IP 95.141.31.4 on March 3, 2013—probably the time frame when I archived the February discussions because no one else had yet done so. (I checked the links then, and if they redirected at that time, I archived them). Since then, however, the merger was obviously reversed with the discussion continuing. There will probably need to be administrative or supervisory input to close this apparently divisive proposal. Perhaps you can help out there. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 04:13, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
Not sure what I can do there to help but thanks for the details. Best regards. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 15:58, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Hardin article

Please enlighten me. The quotation of the text on page 44 of the reference uses the word killing, not killin', so it seemed to me to be a misquote. Is there another source that uses killin' that causes this to be a "sic"? – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 16:59, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

I read the book years ago and am pretty sure the colloquial term is used. I no longer have the book at my disposal, so if you have something fresher, feel free to revert, as I may be wrong on that one. If I am, I apologize... Sorry. The link in the reference takes you to this Google Books link. To the upper left of the book frame there is a field with two arrows, < >, next to it. Type "44" in that field (without the quotation marks) and hit your ENTER key. Near the top of page 44 is the quotation, which goes "If Bill needs killing why don't you kill him yourself?" Clarification for merging(?!) the article Bloody Christmas (1963)

Hello GenQuest, would you please clarify the reason for merging the article? 23x2 and Dr.K. are the only people who wish to merge the article, but where is the consensus? How did you decide to merge the article at all? Please clarify how you came up with the idea that this was a POV Fork? Don't you think there were enough references by both sides? And where is the consensus at all? There is no information "proposed mergers" page. Only proposition by 23x2 and than the acceptance. http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Proposed_mergers In February 2013. And if we really talk about a merge; why did the whole article disappear? Only one Greek POV sentence is there describing this military campaign which is the main source of the violence in the island.. I loose my interest and trust in WP experiencing that such works disappear with the help of some patriot users.. Greetings from Germany, Sbasturk (talk) 22:31, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

See merge and redirect. I had little to do with it, and it was certainly not my decision in the least, as I run maintenance on the proposed mergers page and just report what happens with the requests there. I rarely get personally involved in any but the most non-controversial or trite proposals. (I think the name change I made earlier -and reverted by Dr K by mutual agreement- is confusing you.) Policy is that anyone can merge (even without consensus), and anyone can then revert it, at which time a consensus discussion must take place. It appears that the merge was reverted and reestablished several times without any discussion. Thanks. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 00:56, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
OK, got it. So there was no concensus and somebody just deciced alona, that it was a POV Fork.. And anybody can change it again. Another Wiki War. But how can I be sure, that nobody can delete or redirect it without consensus? Sbasturk (talk) 14:58, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Make your edit and put it on your watchlist. Delete discussion notifications must be posted, so it would show-up then. Same thing with a redirect. Start a conversation on the talk page if it gets contentious. Ask for an RfC if necessary. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 10:36, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Bloody Mary (folklore)

Warning icon Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to blank out or remove portions of page content, templates, or other materials from Wikipedia, as you did at Bloody Mary (folklore), you may be blocked from editing. Thank you.

You are the one being disruptive and non-communal in your approach to a content disagreement on a procedure whose process is clearly spelled out in Wikipedia:Consensus, Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, and WP Bold. The solution is not to try to position yourself as some kind of "vandal-stopping" editor as you have with your bogus 'warning' above, but to calmly discuss the situation without the vitriol. Can you do that? If not, then your behavior with attempting to by-pass procedure and common respect must itself be closely looked at, per use of unnecessary reverting.
