FAC voluntary mentoring scheme

[edit]

During a recent lengthy discussion on the WP:FAC talkpage, several ideas were put forward as to how this procedure could be improved, particularly in making it more user-friendly towards first-time nominees. The promotion rate for first-timers at FAC is depressingly low – around 16 percent – which is a cause for concern. To help remedy this, Mike Christie and I, with the co-operation of the FAC coordinators, have devised a voluntary mentoring scheme, in which newcomers will guided by more experienced editors through the stages of preparation and submission of their articles. The general format of the scheme is explained in more detail on Wikipedia: Mentoring for FAC, which also includes a list of editors who have indicated that they are prepared to act as mentors.

Would you be prepared to take on this role occasionally? If so, please add your name to the list. By doing so you incur no obligation; it will be entirely for you to decide how often and on which articles you want to act in this capacity. We anticipate that the scheme will have a trial run for a few months before we appraise its effectiveness. Your participation will be most welcome. @Brianboulton: This is a great idea, and I would be happy to help. First-time nominations are very stressful and can really take a toll on an editor (I've known many people who have quit editing after their first), so I'd love to alleviate some of that stress and make the process user-friendly while still being rigorous.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 20:25, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for signing up. The response from would-be mentors has been most encouraging. Schemes like this are often slow to take off, and it may be a while before we know if it's working. But with this level of support, including that of many of our most experienced FA editors, I think it has every chance. Brianboulton (talk) 16:39, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Good to hear. Just let me know when I can help out.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:05, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Permanent Record track error

[edit]

In response to repeated undoing of the mentions of the "Hooked on Polkas" track error on Weird Al's box set: how DOES it work? How (or where else on the page) can it be mentioned? It's as useful to know as the My Bologna alternate version and Happy Birthday b-side and UHF single edit, and especially the version that used the wrong My Bologna, in the class of "what is special about this set compared to studio albums". I'm trying to get the word out. Compare the mention of the track error on "The Sign" on https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Greatest_Hits_%28Ace_of_Base_album%29 - which is straightforward and does not have a cited source. Help me help you. 129.22.115.140 (talk) 19:20, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Everything on Wikipedia must be verifiable, which means that sources are needed to back up claims of this nature. Without a source, there's no way of knowing if your claim is true or not. The reason I'm so particular about this article is because it is a "good article", meaning it is one of the highest quality articles on the site. If editors were to start adding claims with no sources, it would degrade that quality.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 20:09, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My source is my CD, which is just missing it. It isn't a bootleg or a rip, and it doesn't skip or anything, it just starts at 0:00 with part of the song missing. Does pointing at the CD constitute "original research"? Do I need to find some other website that mentions it? Can I prove the contents of the CD in some definitive way? I don't know if any other pressings (e.g. the initial bad set with the wrong My Bologna, tape editions) have the error. At least this one does. 129.22.115.140 (talk) 20:26, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that some pressings do indeed omit the opening as per here. The problem is, none of those sources are reliabe--the World Library one would be, unfortunately, when you click on the page, I get a "Please come back soon. Thank you" message. Unfortunately, the answer might just be to wait until World Library updates.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 21:27, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That site is a Wiki-mirror. Poo. I can't seem to find any source that mentions the omission.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 21:31, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's sort of an ontological quandary. I was hoping to use Wikipedia to help spread the info, since it doesn't seem to be known. How does a reliable source begin? I understand the hesitance for the Good Article reason, for sure, but it's a little hard to know how to proceed. Can't the CD itself be a source, as it is for track listings and such? I remember doing research papers and learning the various ways to cite unusual sources (like recordings and filmstrips instead of books and journals), so it must be usable. Do you have a copy of the box set you can check out (or access to one through a friend or library)? Can my copy be of any use, even if it's by conducting a video chat or something? 129.22.115.140 (talk) 18:23, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I actually do have a copy, but it's not accessible for me at the moment (and I don't think I've ever heard the error, since I ripped "Hooked on Polkas" from the DtbS CD). Here's what I think we can do. I posted over on the Reliable Source Noticeboard. They're really good about figuring out what is and is not a reliable source, and how we might proceed from here. Sorry for all the bureaucracy.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 18:40, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:CDs The Offspring Smash Era.jpg.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the image description page states the source and copyright status of the derivative work, it only names the creator of the original work without specifying the status of their copyright over the work.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the original image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Thanks again for your cooperation. Kelly hi! 08:40, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The Barnstar of Diligence
I, PericlesofAthens, award you, Gen. Quon, this honorary Barnstar of Diligence, for your tireless efforts in raising so many articles to GA status, yet in particular the fine job you have done with Cup of the Ptolemies. Thank you kindly for that delightful and informative read! Cheers and all the best. Pericles of AthensTalk 17:31, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I certainly did; it's nice to discover GA quality material for somewhat obscure art pieces like this. I found it by reading the article on Hellenistic art and noticing the link for it there. I'll try and see if I can raise some awareness about it by linking it in a few more articles as well! Regards, Pericles of AthensTalk 18:16, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I do enjoy finding sort of obscure topics and expanding their articles. I did not know that the Cup was linked on that page! Very neat. Adding links would be much appreciated, and if you know of any sources to expand the article, let me know. (Or feel free to do it yourself!) Thanks for the kind words.--Gen. Btw, "Extinction or Extermination?" is a dead link. - Dank (push to talk) 04:32, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Dank: Thanks for the heads up. I fixed the dead link. Also, is there a way to use a different picture? No offense to Mimi Rogers, but a pic of Nietzsche or David Duchovny would fit better, imho.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 13:16, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The mean Main Page people won't let me use "relevant" images like Nietzsche; it has to be something from the episode. I'm a Duchovny fan myself ... but we've got so many X-Files FAs, do readers really want to see him again and again on the Main Page? One of the things that makes this episode special is that it was Rogers's last. - Dank (push to talk) 13:23, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I suppose Rogers should get some attention either way!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 13:26, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Interview invitation from a Wikipedia researcher in University of Minnesota

[edit]

Hello Gen. Quon,

I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.

I would like to invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via either Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.

Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you, Bowen

The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
The year was 2008; I was roughly 8.52 years younger, 50 pounds (23 kg) lighter, and known by the unfortunate sobriquet User:pd_THOR. After making a lot of edits to "Weird Al" Yankovic (album), I bumped into the seemingly equally-enthusiastic Gen. Quon. We enjoyed a pretty congenial back-and-forth for a time, and I haunted both the article and its talk page until, in autumn 2010, Quon made some edits to the article that were entirely correct, wholesome, and improvements. <pout>…and I didn't like them.</pout> I had a little fit because he was right, I was wrong, and the article was not mine to own. So I picked up my toys and went home. By which I mean I invested no further effort into "Weird Al"-related articles; if Gen. Quon wanted to unilaterally make Wikipedia a better place for everyone by improving articles according to community standards, then he could do so without me.

Today, I happened upon the Good Article review of "Another One Rides the Bus" only to find that in my probably-unnoticed absence from the topic, Gen. Quon had been making his way through just about every single thing under the "Weird" umbrella, improving everything he touched along the way. Lo I am humbled. You are far-and-away the better man, and I salute you for your (dare I say) tireless efforts to improve Wikipedia.

     …especially the "Weird" parts. — fourthords | =Λ= | 04:26, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Fourthords: I really appreciate this. You should know that back then (over 6 years! wow!) that I was a very enthusiastic but also somewhat undisciplined editor who often made bull-headed decisions. I do really want to stress that if I caused you any anger or frustration with my edits, that I am really, truly sorry and that I never meant to! I'm still in the process of trying to improve many of the Weird Al articles, and if you are so inclined, I would love for you to jump back in. :) There's a lot of 'weird' articles!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 14:43, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The folly here was all mine. It was I who felt as though the article was his (and only his), and it was I who was frustrated when my personal vision for the article was interrupted by your application of guidelines and consensus. I realized my mistake at the time, and have endeavored since then to follow your example. I just didn't return to the scene of the crime (as it were) because I was embarrassed by being in the wrong. You have nothing for which to be sorry! Thank you for your graciousness. — fourthords | =Λ= | 20:58, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Adventure Time

[edit]

Hello:

The copy edit that you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Adventure Time has been completed.

I did make one obvious change which can be reverted easily if you are not happy with it. Since the Ratings section followed the Episodes section I thought that it made sense to include the viewership numbers in the table. I hope you agree. When you see the numbers set out this way it begs the question - is there a credible explanation for the 800,000 jump in viewership between seasons 4 and 5, or for the massive 2 million+ decline between seasons 6 and 7?

As time allows, you should probably archive the article's URLs where possible - I'm pretty sure this is a FA requirement. I archived #2 (#1 wasn't allowed). You can check it for the website details and the syntax if you need to.

Good luck with the FA nomination.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

First off, thanks so much for your hard work. It looks great. I'll get to work archiving those urls. Hello Gen. Quon,

When you get the chance, could you review my FAC linked above? If you can't, please reply. Thanks. -- 1989 13:03, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your brief comments. I hope you'll be able to return soon. I also want to note that I requested an image and source review for your FAC. Good luck with it. -- 1989 22:51, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I went back and added a few more points, but once those are addressed, I'll be ready to support. Also, thank you for the image and source review request.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 13:33, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So Easy cover

[edit]

Sorry about that...I've only ever seen the black and gray single cover from 2002 so I didn't realize the one on the page was the 1999 vinyl's cover. All of the other pages for Röyksopp songs use the most recent covers rather than the first ones, and all of the articles for Melody A.M. songs (like Sparks, Remind Me, Poor Leno, Eple, and of course Melody A.M.) use pictures of the covers in this particular style, so would you mind if I added the 2002 cover back? I can change the caption to clarify that it's the 2002 cover if you want. It just seems like it would be better to have all of the Melody A.M. song articles with images of the same-style covers. Cent of Restitution (talk) 03:39, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Cent of Restitution: I apologize if I came off as a bit curt. How does this look?--Gen. Quon (Talk) 13:23, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all. If I had known it existed, I would have added the extra cover template instead in the first place. Thanks! --Cent of Restitution (talk) 20:04, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Typo Team

[edit]

Hi again! You mentioned an interest in the WP:Typo Team so I thought I'd talk about it here rather than on an article talk page.

Typo Team is a fairly small group of obsessive-compulsive Wikignomes. I recommend it to new editors, as hunting for typos is a good way to get general experience with the Project while making small, simple edits. But there isn't a whole lot of member-retention, and editors usually follow their interests to other WikiProjects.

Typo Team maintains extensive lists of common typos, and updates AutoWikiBrowser for semi-automated typo correction. There's also an adopt-a-typo program. I started with boys's, and every few months I'll do a typo purge of boy's/boys'/boys's and girl's/girls'/girls's. Once I hit an impasse in my writing, and purged the encycopedia from common typos of writer's block.

Some of the higher-ups at Typo Team will occassionally be seen helping at the MOS talk pages or the language reference desk.

BTW, I noticed you promoted Yoda (song) to GA, so thanks for that! Weird Al is by far my favourite musical artist, and the only person for whom I've stood in line to get an autograph. – Reidgreg (talk) 15:59, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the info, and it's something I'd like to help out with. I have a personal interest in endashes and emdashes, as well as the sneaked vs. snuck debate... although I'm not so sure those are 'typos' more so than MoS 'violations' or what have you. With all that said, I am definitely interested; I'd like to work at being a better copy-editor, and catching/fixing typos seems like a good place to start. As for "Yoda", I'm glad to meet another Weird Al fan! I've actually worked on a lot of Weird Al's articles on here, and it's been a ton of fun.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 21:37, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you're not sure if something is a typo, and it's not on the Typo Team lists, the language reference desk (Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language) is a good place to check for advice on usage. For copyediting, there are a lot of help files, tutorials and other resources at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/How to. I highly recommend Tony1's tutorials; I think they're the best self-help files on the wiki. I went through them a few months ago, after being shocked by the high page-view stats on some articles I'd contributed to. I've been working with the Guild to get more practice and hone my writing skills. Reidgreg (talk) 15:44, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Copying within Wikipedia requires proper attribution

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Lactantius into The Divine Institutes. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. Astronomica copy edit

[edit]

Hi Gen. Quon, I had a good time learning about Astronomica. I tried my best to make the article less "overly academic", but there was a limited amount I could do, although I do think a somewhat academic register is reasonable when describing a two-millenium-old scholarly work. Two things that you might consider to make it less academic would be reducing the number of direct quotes from academics, and reducing the use of Latin. I didn't touch either of those as it seems like a task that should be left to a content expert. Cheers, Tdslk (talk) 00:42, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Tdslk: Thank you so much for your hard work. I really do appreciate it! I think the article reads much better and is less academic-y. And thanks for the additional feedback; I'll try to implement those suggestions as I move forward.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 01:31, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The X-Files (season 11)

[edit]

With this edit at The X-Files (season 11), did you copy-paste the content from Draft:The X-Files (season 11) instead of requesting a technical move? -- AlexTW 22:37, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@AlexTheWhovian: Well, I was going to add an attribution template on the talk page, but something irl prevented me from doing so until it was too late.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 22:41, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Either way, it has been reverted and the proper method has been executed by moving the draft article to the mainspace. From WP:MOVE: Do not move or rename a page by copying/pasting its content, because doing so fragments the edit history. (Wikipedia's copyright license requires acknowledgement of all contributors, and editors continue to hold copyright on their contributions unless they specifically give up this right. Hence it is required that edit histories be preserved for all major contributions until the normal copyright expires. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.) Thank you. -- AlexTW 22:45, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@AlexTheWhovian: I was unfamiliar with how drafts work, so I assumed it had to be copied over, much like a sandbox. I appreciate the information.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 23:04, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article Stay with You (Lemon Jelly song) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No references, no claim of notability, fails WP:NSONG and WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Admin rights

[edit]

Just wondering if your're interested in becoming an admin. Right now, the community could use some more admins. You don't have a bad rep on Wikipedia, and you have plenty of experience in different Wiki activities. I can't imagine your RfA failing. — JudeccaXIII (talk) 23:43, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've thought about it recently, and I am definitely interested. My main issue is that I fear I do not have the requisite knowledge just yet. I've been editing a long time, but there are still "under the hood" aspects of Wikipedia that I'm not 100% on. I don't know if that's a big issue. If you have any further thoughts, please do let me know.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 13:31, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Gen. Quon If that's how you really feel, no pressure. I'm not sure if every admin knows policy to heart or even participates in all aspects of Wikipedia. — JudeccaXIII (talk) 22:20, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Adventure Time Seasons

[edit]

Per Cartoon Network's releasing of episodes on Hulu, we should fix the ordering of the episodes. Mistakes are often made when it comes to media merchandising, and this is clearly a case of CN getting the seasons mixed up. Just figured I'd give my take on the situation.

I assume you're talking about season 7+? If so, honestly, I'm so split: on one hand, I want the season to be what they should be. On the other, I want to honor how CN is dividing and releasing the episodes. It's so frustrating to have a production-side understanding of the seasons, and a DVD/merch-side understanding. And both sides are very passionate and there are no clear-cut answers. But I appreciate your comments, and I am wont to agree with you: this was a good case of CN just screwing up and messing with everyone.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 02:11, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the articles, "about a fourth-century AD Christian patchwork Latin poem, arranged by the Roman noblewoman Faltonia Betitia Proba. Cento vergilianus de laudibus Christi is composed entirely of lines by the Roman poet Virgil, but the author has taken them, rearranged them, and re-contextualized them to be about the Old and New Testaments of the Christian Bible. In addition to its peculiar poetic style, the work is unique for a number of reasons: for instance, it is one of the first examples of Christian poetry, and perhaps the first instance of a Christian, poetic description of hell. The poem was also likely the first work by a women to have been printed and disseminated via the printing press." - I love the vibrant playful colours of today's Main page! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:22, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for creating several articles on women and their works over the past few weeks. We have become aware of your contributions thanks to research undertaken by Bobo.03 at the University of Minnesota.

Thank you for your peer review!

[edit]

Thank you for your peer review of Mass killings under Communist regimes. I really appreciate it! I've included your comments on the article's talk page. You are most welcome to join in the discussion, but be advised that this particular article's talk page is arguably the most contentious place on Wikipedia - hence why the article was under full protection for over seven years. Again, I really appreciate the peer review. Thanks! schetm (talk) 02:06, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:18, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
