[edit]Hi there, I've noticed that you've incorrectly tagged a couple of articles as G4 that I've deleted recently. Please note that G4 only applies to articles that have been deleted via deletion discussion. It's not too big of a deal (and it's a common mistake), but I thought that you might like to know. John Linehan (basketball) Speedy Deletion
[edit]The guy is the current NCAA career steals leader, three-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year, and a former NABC Defensive Player of the Year award winner. Clearly notable. I would recommend at least doing a Google search on the guy before nominating for speedy deletion, much less regular deletion.--User:2008Olympianchitchatseemywork 05:59, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, didn't mean to be snippy, it was just that the speedy delete was very quick and unexpected, I should have had more references than I did. I thought that his Iba Award was enough to have him meet WP:NOTEDPLAYER, but he got some national AP coverage too when he set the mark that I hadn't yet included.--User:2008Olympianchitchatseemywork 06:18, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
William Pomerance
[edit]http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/William_Pomerance
Saw you tagged this for deletion, but visiting the page it's no longer tagged. Would support a speedy delete, but don't really know the process. Let me know if i can help. Though the name is common enough as a jewish name, there's no links to anything that show's he's a jew; there's also no links to anything that shows he was definitely a communist, though there is a link to 50-year old testimony in which one person accuses him, in a non-specific way, of being a communist. Other than that it's a link farm to "Accuracy in media" (a right wing opinion shop), some guy named persevero's blog, and an old thread on an internet forum with a "list of jews" from disney. There's something creepy about this tiny little article... Bali ultimate (talk) 00:24, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for the note, Bali ultimate. After looking this up, I absolutely agree with you that the label of Pomerance as a communist is irresponsible and unsourced, especially since Pomerance denied Disney's claim (which Disney himself admitted was unsourced). However, I do think that Pomerance is notable enough for a Wikipedia article, and so is Disney's accusation of him. So, I've edited the article to reflect this, and will notify the original editors and keep watching the entry to make sure that further information is neutral and sourced. I'll try to add more info to this article when I can. - FlyingToaster 01:33, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Cool. I hope we can remove the "jewish" reference as well. Unless someone was involved in advancing their faith (or fighting battles about their faith) or whatever, it just never seems approproriate. It's like "Babe Ruth a Baptist who played baseball tktktk."Bali ultimate (talk) 01:41, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- I did remove the Jewish bit, because there was no reliable source that said it. However, I do think that a person's religion is an acceptable piece of information to add if they have a more in-depth article. On many celebrities, you'll find that they have an "infobox" describing information such as their hometown and birthplace. This is an acceptable place to put someone's religion. However, calling someone a "Jewish communist" in the first line of an article is far from neutral human interest. - FlyingToaster 01:42, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
It's not really important, but the article creator is seeking to add back in irrelevant external links to blogs and partisan websites on the argument that such external links are "useful for expanding the article." This is obviously a small matter either way (how many people are going to look at this entry anyway) but since you got involved once and i've made further changes, thought you might like to know. I informed the editor Trojancowboy at his/her talk page.
- Thanks for the note, Bali ultimate. I should mention that I and other editors have a history with Trojancowboy and his malicious edits - he is being watched. - FlyingToaster 21:04, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Page protection on Nobel Peace Prize
[edit]Hi there! Did you mean to request full protection for this page? As I understand it full protection will effectively lock the page off to editors, whereas I presume you want to protect it from IPs? I may, of course, be completely wrong! --Ged UK (talk) 10:13, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hey Ged UK. I did mean semi-protect actually, because it seems like the vandalism going on in Nobel Peace Prize is for users who are not auto-confirmed. Full protection would mean only admins can edit it, and that seems like overkill for a few rambunctious IP addresses that will probably go away in an hours. - FlyingToaster 10:34, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
- That's what I thought! I suspect an admin would have noticed and semi-protected anyway, but thought I ought to check! --Ged UK (talk) 10:45, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Toasters are cool
[edit]It has been a real busy week for me, plan to get back to Wikipedia after the weekend. Maybe add some material from my research, of course not include my original research but stick to the sources. I have a idea about creating an article about a general World Crisis article. This has been talked about in many intellectual circles, there is a page for the environmental crisis and financial crisis, etc, etc, So intellectuals like Ervin László have several theories towards possible solutions for the general World Crisis. This could a general project that would place many solutions to the general crisis. Sorry getting into my research but you did ask. savasas (talk) 11:46, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Cain
[edit]Don't lock the topic, there needs to be a general disambiguation page that includes both Cain & Abel.
Panarchy —Preceding unsigned comment added by Panarchy (talk • contribs) 09:45, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hey Panarchy. Since we have a disambiguation page for Cain and for Abel, a term that includes both I think should go in that page. - FlyingToaster 09:47, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- So you're not denying that there should be a page that encompasses both words and an ampersand?
--Panarchy (talk) 14:12, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- Punctuation has nothing to do with it, I just think a title with Cain & Abel in it may be easier to find at the Cain and Abel disambiguation pages. But I also don't feel particularly strongly about it, so create the page you want and I can fix the style. - FlyingToaster 18:46, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Adoption
[edit]Hi FlyingToaster - thanks for your message. Very sad to hear that Roux has left. If you're in touch with him please pass on my regrets, and thank him for the help he gave me.
If you're sure you're in the market for taking on another batch of wikiurchins I'd love for you to adopt me. (Though I should warn you that being passed from broken home to broken home like this, I'm bound to turn out behaviourally challenged ~_^) I'd been working through Roux's adoption program on User:Gonzonoir/Adoption, and would be keen to carry on from there.
Thanks for stepping up to do this. It's more than kind of you. Gonzonoir (talk) 12:11, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hi - sorry to prod on this, but are you interested? I've got some adoptee-type questions I need to ask someone, and I'll go and sign up with someone else if not. Cheers. Gonzonoir (talk) 17:07, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hey Gonzonoir! Yeah, I'm up to it if you're interested. I will give Roux your regrets and thank him. And we know that you're probably a behavioral lost cause at this point, destined to lead a life of good-time ladies and big band music. Hey, everyone's gotta take a cause to make them feel self-righteous. Carrying up on that adoption page looks like a good plan, let's do dees. As for your adoptee-type questions, hit me ya punk. FlyingToaster 17:18, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- *slugs you* Bam! That's awesome, cheers. I'll update my adoptee user box whatsname.
- OK, my question: today I was copyediting Karl M. Baer, a newish article with content mostly written by a single user, the originator. She's obviously gone to lots of trouble to put together a thorough piece, including - according to the Talk page - translating stuff from non-English sources. That's left the article with one section, a direct quote, that reads pretty clunkily. I'd like to clean it up, but if the translation itself is third-party text, that's obviously a bad idea. So I want to talk to the user about it, but could use some tips first on:
- Are we OK to produce our own translations of third-party material, or does that constitute OR?
- Is a big block quote like that even a good idea in the article? Might it be better if I just paraphrased the quote, in clearer English, instead?
- Yeah!
- I'm not quite sure where to find policy notes on this, so thought maybe you could point me in the right direction. Cheers! Gonzonoir (talk) 19:50, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yo yo yo. WP encourages you to go ahead and do translations. It's held under the same rules as paraphrasing rather than OR. As long as it's referenced correctly, anyone's free to improve the translation. As far as the big block quote - well that's always a bit of a personal opinion question. I always try to avoid large quotes unless the quote itself is notable. If it's only relating information, I'd go ahead and paraphrase it. In the case of Martha, I think the quote doesn't really add much on its own and would be better as a paraphrase. So, I encourage you to go ahead and do it. You don't even need to ask the user first - you're changing style rather than content, and if your edit is questioned you can always go to the talk page. WP encourages you to stray on the side of boldness, so go for it! I'd tell you to make sure and add an edit summary, but you've been doing that very well already. :) FlyingToaster 20:08, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- Grand. That's done. Being terribly British the old Be Bold injunction still trips me up sometimes, but now the deed's done. Cheers! Gonzonoir (talk) 10:18, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

so called sock puppet
[edit]i am not a so called "sock puppet". my friend created the Molasky Wikipedia page and i edited it and then made my own page to try and spead awareness of the sport. (Tjhill (talk) 01:30, 19 November 2008 (UTC))
who gets to decide if its notable or not? (Tjhill (talk) 01:55, 19 November 2008 (UTC))
so just because we dont have reliable sources cited on the page it is not notable? thats rediculous, because as was stated on the page it is a new sport that is being established, in which case there is a very small chance that we have any sources to cite on our page but that does not decrease the reality of Molasky or the truth behind the page that was unrightously deleted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tjhill (talk • contribs) 02:06, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

HotCat for Dab pages
[edit]I noticed your summary on Phelan (and thanks for dealing with the vand'm on it). I've noticed HotCat but don't use it, so perhaps you can help me:
- Did it actually suggest Category:Disambiguation to you?
- If so, did it also mention either Category:Disambiguation pages or Disambig?
- If you know, does it take a developer to change those suggestions, or can an admin do so?
I've already fixed it, to the template that the vand presumably trashed.
BTW, i love your handle; my guess is that i saw a graphic it would describe before meeting WP, tho i don't remember where, and i don't recall paying attention to you before, but the handle is a day-brightener. Thanks again,
--Jerzy•t 22:41, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hey there Jerzy. With hotcat, you actually start typing a category and it will fill in the rest for you - then you select it from a list. Unfortunately this doesn't always work very well. When you're looking at an article without any categories, it's not always easy to guess which apply. But, for disambiguation pages this is pretty quick. It mentioned "Disambiguation" as well as "Category:Disambiguation." Also, [[Flying_toaster|Flying Toasters\\ is a reference to the Berkeley Systems early Mac screensaver from After Dark. :) - FlyingToaster 04:56, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your guidance! OK, the good news is that you seem to be the only one doing it. Please don't: That cat is for pages about Dab'n, and templates for implementing Dabs. Please use Disambig or even Dab instead. TIA.

- Yeah, I actually figured that out once I saw the Confession album article. :) I saw "album" and figured it was a music album rather than a document, and redirecting from a book was a mistake, my bad! Anyway, I took off the tag and fixed your redirect. FlyingToaster 17:15, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi FylingToaster. Just to inform you that instead of speedy deleting the page, I redirected it to Manila shawl. They're somewhat related. --Efe (talk) 07:30, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, don't add admin, just Efe. Shawl is fine, in a broader sense, but Manila shawl is an embroidered shawl, so I thought of redirecting it there instead of deleting, and the fact that the editor wrote there "You can see Manila shawl". --Efe (talk) 07:48, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
- But my first reaction was kinda awkward. Anyway, thanks for that and so much for this. Let's get back to work. Yes, not all embroidered shawls and Manila shawls. I think its fine to redirect it to shawls to be safe, but why not ask the creator? --Efe (talk) 04:08, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

The Wikipedian Ckatz http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Ckatz has placed a deletion Tag on my article.

Romanian Generals
[edit]Hi. I see you're creating a bunch of stubs on Romanian generals (of somewhat dubious notability). I can't stop you from doing so, but could I at least ask you to try and place diacritics where appropriate, so someone doesn't have to come do that later? For instance, Ilie Creţulescu not Cretulescu, Petre Cameniţă not Camenita, and so forth. If you don't know what the proper diacritics are, you may find them here. -- Biruitorul Talk 05:58, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll go fix them. But I'm also concerned about what you said about notability - I'd rather not waste time if some of these guys aren't notable. Do you have any opinion over what makes a general notable? FlyingToaster 06:02, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, and if there are any you're having trouble with, I'll help you out. Regarding notability, I think a key test is: will this always be a three-line article basically saying the man existed, or does it have potential to develop into, say, 4-5 paragraphs? Regarding Romanian generals specifically, I'd say that (as a rule) Marshals are always notable (but then again, there were just 3 of them), and 4-star generals generally so. With 3-, 2- and 1-star generals, it's a bit more iffy. They'd almost surely survive AfD, but most of them probably wouldn't make very compelling articles either. Perhaps a list format might work better? Anyway, those are my preliminary thoughts. Looking forward, I suggest temporarily halting until you get a more informed opinion from User:Eurocopter tigre, the Romanian military expert here, as well as a Military History WikiProject coordinator. I've asked him to comment here, and if what he says differs from what I suggested, by all means disregard me on this. -- Biruitorul Talk 06:31, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- No problem and no need to apologize: who knows, maybe some of those generals will, one day, get longer articles. Even now, they're definitely more interesting than random football players! -- Biruitorul Talk 07:57, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Considering the fact that World War II was quite notable, any generals who took part in it are notable enough to have articles here - I don't think there are many british or german generals without an article on english wiki, even if they are not very famous/their actions did not affect the course of the war :). Anyway, in my opinion it's good that we create stubs for such low-importance generals, but if you are really interested in this I suggest to focus on the articles regarding notable generals (such as Grigorescu, Dragalina, Constantinescu, Dumitrescu, etc). Also, I invite you to add your name here if you would like to join the Romanian Military history task force. Best regards, --Eurocopter (talk) 13:16, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

FlyingToaster, I would like to thank you for your participation in my recent Request for Adminship, which passed with 112 supports, 4 opposes and 5 neutrals. A special mention goes out to Stwalkerster and Pedro for nominating me, thanks a lot for having trust in me! In response to the neutrals, I will try to double check articles that have been tagged for speedy deletion before I CSD them and will start off slowly with the drama boards of ANI and AN to ensure that I get used to them. In response to the oppose !votes on my RfA, I will check that any images I use meet the non-free content criteria and will attempt to handle any disputes or queries as well as I can. If you need my help at all, feel free to simply ask at my talk page and I'll see if I can help. I created this page by moving the long list of names from the dab page Mitchell. I see that a bot tagged this new page as a possible copy of the dab page, then you changed it to a redirect and then reverted back to my version. Is it OK now? I thought what I did fit the pattern I saw with similar changes. Maybe I should have saved the dab page changes before saving the new page. Let me know if you see any issues with my having done this. The Point Fosdick Institute Challenges Your Deletion
[edit]In light of a recent deletion facilitated on your behalf, the Point Fosdick Institute of Social Sciences would like to challenge you to a debate on international television. The Debate will allow us to defend the opinions that we have expressed freely, which you have seen fit to remove from a so called free website. Our people would like to hold the debate within the upcoming two months but are willing to be flexible depending on your schedule. Please be punctual with your response. The Point Fosdick Institute takes its reputation very seriously.

RE: RE: The Point Fosdick Institute
[edit]During the debate each side will have twenty minutes to make an opening statement and ten minutes for a rebuttal. The starting side will be chosen via a coin toss to be held at the site of the debate. The topic would be to resolve the validity of our essay on Herr Evans, and to maintain the reputation of the Point Fosdick Institute of Social Sciences. Unfortunately our institute lacks the monetary funding to buy airtime on one of the larger television networks, so we have made a deal with a local university to simulcast our debate to whoever would like to view it. Please respond with a time and date that suits your needs. (PFinstitute (talk) 19:09, 28 November 2008 (UTC))

Agreement on Crisis
[edit]Yes, I agree with you after working on it, I felt that I did not have enough independent NPOV sources to rely on. I guess it just wanting to get into adding to Wikipedia, but the important factor is I found an article global crisis that is along the lines I was planning. for me its just a matter of time before the world crisis becomes like the cold war or the great depression, but if wikipedia was around in 1931, would there be an article called Great Depression. SO the big thing is NPOV. I will continue editing and sourcing, it feeds the little academic within. savasas (talk) 01:30, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Now that I think about it pulling the information off the API might be practical. At 5,000 pages an API query, quering the API every 30 seconds with a maxlag of 5 it should take about 5 hours to pull the link properties of all 2.65 million pages on wikipedia. Searching Wikipedia namespace, previewing Category edits?
[edit]Hi FlyingToaster - a couple of adoptee questions, assuming you have a minute and that asking them over here's all kosher. If I'm bugging you too much, or there's another way you'd prefer to carry out cosy adoptee chinwaggery, just leave me a note and I'll dial it down.
- Is it possible to search just the Wikipedia namespace parts of the project, or do I always have to search across articles too? If I'm looking for information about copyediting, is there any place I can search just for Wikipedia policy and projects on this, or do I just have to type it into the wee box at left?
- When I'm editing and want to add categories to an article, is there any way to see the categories in Preview? I generally find picking out categories a bit of a crapshoot, since I haven't quite got to grips with the categorical index yet, and it would be useful to check I've got them right before hitting Save page.
Thanks! Gonzonoir (talk) 12:21, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Grand Ayatollah Seyed ....
[edit]I've reviewed the circumstances of your ed summary reading "(→Given name: rv vandalism)", in which you deleted one entry i added to Reza (name), in my edit that roughly tripled the size in bytes of a page that now has over 150 lines. I cannot help but sympathize with your apparent inclination to anticipate bad faith in connection with what i presume must have preceded last month's Del-w/-Salt AfD of Grand Ayatollah Seyed Reza Hosseini Nassab -- especially since i can recall blocking at least a few users for "acting in concert with a blocked vandal" rather than pursuing check-user in the hope of nailing them down as socks.
In this case, however, my (boringly massive!) expansion of the page was a result of my wanting to be sure that a photo-journalist i heard interviewed on Saturday (probably by Terry Gross), and who was referred to repeatedly (and AFAI can recall possibly even exclusively) simply as "Reza" was easily findable by typing those 4 characters into WP. It also reflected my casual impression, once i got to look at the existing list, that it probably included people with the given name who didn't deserve inclusion on it if we had bio articles on others who are equally notable. (And i regard that impression as vindicated by the fact that the entries i added included at least one previously absent member of the Pahlavi family.)
All that being said, i can not find it in my heart to resent you for libeling me in that summary -- nor to let the matter lie! I risk a gratuitous remark: i trust you will get back to me quickly with a proposed remedy. TIA.
--Jerzy•t 19:38, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Indeed. My concern is solely with the summary. How about you do a dummy edit on the page in order to make the next summary say that what you did was a partial reversion of a good-faith edit, so your contradiction of the vand charge stands immediately above it? (I think your self-reverting and my removing the name would fall under POINT, so i don't suggest that, and i think deleting the revision that has the summary would be a hell of a sledgehammer for this fly!)
--Jerzy•t 20:00, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Done. My summary was
- (dummy edit): Precd'g ed'r now understands&agrees that incl'n was not vand; for my part, i never contested either the rem'l, or the del'n that intervened betw our edits. See our tk pgs for today.

[edit]Hi! I was patrolling new pages and ran into your signature in a few places, and stopped by your user page. Firstly, good job, and thanks, and all that... looks like you do good work here. Secondly, I noticed that you refer to ""information" as "incredibly powerful commodity" on your user page. I generally think of the Marxist concept of commodity when I see it (goods or services produced for the market), and this does not seem to fit. Also, the perhaps more common(?) concept of commodity (a good lacking differentiation acoss the market) does not seem to fit either. Maybe I'm missing something? CSD tag on Property buying guide
[edit]Hello, I would just like to inform you that I have removed the Speedy Deletion tag you placed on Property buying guide, as the given reason was not a valid Speedy criterion. From the WP:CSD page:
The following are not by themselves sufficient to justify speedy deletion.
- Reasons derived from Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. Wikipedia is not: "a dictionary", "an indiscriminate collection of information", "a crystal ball", etc.
I have replaced it with a WP:PROD tag using your original wording, and I've added a piped link to WP:What Wikipedia is not. Thanks anyway for taking the time to tag it, and good luck in your future efforts to improve Wikipedia.--Unscented (talk) 20:56, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Glencreecentrelogo.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Glencreecentrelogo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:17, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Maintenance tagging
[edit]Hi adoptive parent - do you know off the top of your head how I tag an article as having multiple maintenance issues? I thought there was a way to do it with a single template, rather than just stringing together a list of all the problems a given article has. Can't seem to find it in the help files, though. Cheers. [edit]Hi Flying toaster
thanks for the notice for potash one. The information was supplied by the company as it is factual information. It seems they used the document on other reliable sites so that is why the copywrite warning came up.

Replaceable fair use Image:Boxxy1.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Boxxy1.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add

, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sceptre (talk) 11:23, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Copyright problem: Army worm
[edit]Hello. The article Army worm appears to include substantial text copied from http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/field/fall_armyworm.htm, and therefore seems to be a copyright violation. Our copyright policy, of course, forbids our using copyrighted text without proper licensing by the copyright holder. Duplicated text seems to have been introduced by you here. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted.
If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL), versions 1.3 or later then you should do one of the following:
- If you have permission from the author leave a message explaining the details at Talk:Army worm and send an email with confirmation of permission to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
- If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or that the material is released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:Army worm with a link to where we can find that note.
- If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Army worm.
It may also be necessary for the text be modified to have an encyclopedic tone and to follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
If you would like to begin working on a new version of the article you may do so at this temporary page. Leave a note at Talk:Army worm saying you have done so and an administrator will move the new article into place once the issue is resolved.
Thank you. Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:01, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Even more exciting than article issue tagging: TEMPLATE CLEANUP!
[edit]Hi Toaster - can I test your wikiguru skills again? I just found a glitch in Template:YU Roshei Yeshiva: someone had added to the template a hyperlink in <ref> tags, which threw a cite error on all the articles in which it appeared after the reflist template, or that had no reflist in the first place. I've removed the stray ref from the template, but the articles on which the template appears are still showing the error. I've found that going to edit each article and pressing save without making any changes makes the error disappear, but do you know of a quicker method than that? Cheers. Hi, can you confirm if the Article alterations are now up to scratch? I am assuming that you had a problem with the word 'apparently' being in italics? Notice the word is now gone. It makes sense that since an awards section is allowed on the article, that information about recent awards should be allowed on it. In future, perhaps you can avoid a whole-sale deletion, and remove the one word you feel is against wiki terms. Whole-Sale deletions or reversions do not improve Wikipedia in any way. Why speedy delete ?
[edit]Why do you mark Bold for Delphi for speedy deletion ? I admit that I have not reliable sources for the text. But a search on the net do not give much fact about the framework. I also admit that I'm not a good writer... And I am also a newbie in wikipedia how to add things. But I use it every day in my work and Bold is fantastic, it gives so much productivity back. Sandcastles, or maybe just mud
[edit]Hi FT, adoptee question for you. Is it preferable to move articles created in a userspace sandbox into main article space 'properly', using the "move" function (as happened at Giles Hattersley), rather than copying and pasting (which is what I've been doing)? I guess the former option preserves the page history, but is that important if there's been only one contributor? Also, I guess in the former case you then have to delete the auto-created redirect from the sandbox, and should use discrete sandbox pages for each new article instead of the generic all-purpose sandbox I've been using. So in conclusion... srs bzns. Is it just a matter of the namespace edit balance one prefers? :) (BTW, the one in there at the moment is far from ready for mainspace, I know). Copyright concerns, redux
[edit]Hi. Thanks for your attention to this matter. I still have copyright concerns with the Army worm article as now in temp space; my notes are here. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:45, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- This article has come current for copyright investigation closure. Do you plan to work on the temporary version further? --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:30, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
- All righty. I'll consolidate it and note that it should be resolved soon. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:42, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
- While I appreciate your interest in correcting this matter, we can't leave it pending indefinitely, particularly as the temporary version of the article still published copyright infringing material. Since the temporary version of the article had not been edited since the 11th, I have closed this matter by cleaning the article and deleting the temp. You're welcome to add details to the article directly that have been drawn from those sources, but please be careful to write the material in your own words. We can't duplicate text from external sources or too closely paraphrase it unless the text you are placing is found in a source that is public domain, is not governed by US copyright law (such as simple lists) or is otherwise licensed compatibly with GFDL. If you are uncertain of the status of a source, you might want to seek feedback at WT:C, but otherwise, as our copyright FAQ notes, it is best to assume that the text is copyrighted. If you would like feedback on a paraphrase, please feel free to let me know at my talk page. Alternatively, you might ask at Wikipedia talk:Close paraphrasing, as contributors to that essay may be able to give you a hand. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:58, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Adrian Volts
[edit]I'm strongly inclined to AfD this nonsense straight away. Ignoring the rubbish about 100 million copies, which is presumably left over from J.K.Rowling, and ignoring all the inconsistencies, all that he actually claims is to have self-published one book with a print run of 1,000, of which 500 were given to libraries - i.e. less than 500, if any, sold. No way is that notable, even if it were verified, and uploading images of the cover isn't going to help. Everything else - English publication, lots of future books - is pie in the sky. He has no idea what notability means - he just wants to use WP for publicity, and I don't think we should keep it up any longer than we have to: an AfD would give him five days to produce evidence of notability. I'll wait if you think we should give him a day or two, but I can't see what he could do that would save it. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 17:34, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. Concerning your contribution, File:Philmorrow.png, please note that Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted text or images obtained from other web sites or printed material, without the permission of the author(s). This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.wild-rover.com/bios/pmorrow.html. As a copyright violation, File:Philmorrow.png appears to qualify for deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. File:Philmorrow.png has been tagged for deletion, and may have been deleted by the time you see this message.
If you believe that the article or image is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:
- If you have permission from the author, leave a message explaining the details at Talk:File:Philmorrow.png and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
- If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:File:Philmorrow.png with a link to where we can find that note.
- If you hold the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:File:Philmorrow.png.

Your RFA
[edit]Hi there. Phew, I admit, I did not expect that reaction to my !vote, it looked like a clear case but now Tan may be right to think it's "derailing"; it certainly will have its fair share of drama. I am truly sorry for that. Should your RFA fail, I hope you have no hard feelings (not many at least) about it. As I said, I think you are a good contributor and I would like to see you become an admin someday. It's just that I am becoming increasingly frustrated by your (and other people's) approach to speedy deletion tagging and you were one of those responsible for it. "Tag them all, let the admins sort it out" leads to two results, both of which are undesirable: either it creates a massive backlog through which admins like me have to wade or admins who have a more "liberal" approach to CSD (i.e. like to ignore the criteria) will delete a fair share of valid content and we end up losing good contributors. No matter if this RFA succeeds or fails, I hope you can take this lesson from it and start to tag much more conservatively. Always think about it this way: There is no harm in keeping something for five days (except attack pages and copyvios). If you haven't yet, you might want to read WP:WIHS. And if I can do anything for you, please let me know. Regards SoWhy 22:29, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hey SoWhy - thanks for the comment - I appreciate you talking to me directly. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed in how the RfA was going, but it happens and the next one will probably succeed. However, I see the actual process of becoming an admin as quite temporary compared the larger span of our years of work on Wikipedia. A more important issue is that if/when I do become an admin, you and I are probably going to be working together and collaborating on patrols, vandalism, etc. I think it's unlikely that we'll ever have such similar personal interpretations of each of the deletion criteria that we work identically. In fact, often we may completely disagree over whether pages should be included. I think this is useful and healthy, and it's good to hear your view on my tagging (though I wish I'd known before RfA, but that's how it goes). And while obviously I don't agree 100% with your view on my edits, I'm definitely going to be much slower and more careful while patrolling as a result of this RfA, no matter which way it goes. Unfortunately, that means a longer backlog for pages to be patrolled, but other people will step in and it shouldn't be a big deal. Anyway, I welcome criticism both now and in the future if you find a problem in my edits. I know the backlog for admins like yourself can get really horrible on CSD, which is a big part of the reason I wanted to apply for admin in the first place, so I'm looking forward to the time where we can work together to protect the content here. Happy editing to you. FlyingToaster 00:35, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
Wow Toasty nice response time :)
[edit]Thanks for the quick feedback. As I said, I'm new to this and hopefully as I get the hang of things there wont be as many slip ups on my future pages. I looked over the Wikipedia:Notability and I think I see where I went sideways.
The page was not put up to promote the game, though I did mention that it may be a positive side effect. My intention was to create an OpenGamingResource to document the huge interest in the game via highlighting some of the user content out there. This would include fluff, or background info, and new rules inspired by the game and published in the monthly magazines. I would have also liked to include other user generated material that has generated enough of a reputation by the community to be considered unofficial-official content.
I do concede the point of bias and will keep that in mind for future pages.
However after giving it some thought I think my content would be better suited to wiki.rpd.net. So feel free to throw her in the recycle bin.
Cheers

Non-free images in userspace
[edit]Hi. I see that you have included two non-free images in your userspace, here, specifically File:Tsar Bomba fireball.jpg and File:Tsar photo11.jpg. I wanted to let you know that this is against policy; non-free content notes that such images are "allowed only in articles...and only in article namespace, subject to exemptions." You are, of course, welcome to link to them there, but please remove them from your userspace. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:16, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Your RFA
[edit]It always astounds me how condescending some contributors can be when they are given the opportunity to criticise others. Anyone can make a mistake, and it stands to reason that the more work you do, the more mistakes you will make. So you keep plugging away and don't let the b******* grind you down! Thankspam
[edit]Dear FlyingToaster, belated post holiday thanks for your support in my RFA which was successful. I'm sorry to see that your RFA is doing little better than my first one, though with nearly twice the participation and only one reason for opposes instead of the seven I had to face. But I know what you are going through, so when your ready for a bit of cheering up, the full nonpersonalised Oscar acceptance speech version of my Thankspam is here, its best appreciated by reading out loud in the style of Ms Winslet :-) PS If like me you have to make this a two stage process, then if I'm on Wiki break when you next run feel free to ping me an Email. Your RfA (closed)
[edit]I just closed your RfA as unsuccessful. Consensus was not reached. I imagine if you address the concerns of the opposition (specifically issues concerning criteria for speedy deletion) you will fair better next time.
You are a valued member of this community, and I hope you continue to work hard on the Wikipedia project. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me on my talk page or via email. Sincerely, Kingturtle (talk) 14:01, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- Your RfA was a very difficult call for me and for a lot of people. I think you're a brilliant and dedicated editor, and I hope you'll help us with CSD issues; I see 3 or 4 initiatives in progress at the moment, and I'm optimistic. Standard advice from my userspace: Take some time off and enjoy yourself. RFAs create stress, and stress creates problems. After failed RFAs where the vote was close, you'll often hear "RFA is obviously crap, otherwise you would have passed" and "No, there's nothing wrong with RFA" (implication: it must be you). Ignore both, because both carry some implication that you'll never be able to pass RFA, and that's rarely true when the vote is close. There's nothing to be embarrassed about; many great admins have failed an RFA, and people generally aren't going to hold anything against you that's said at RFA. - Dan Dank55 (push to talk) 14:05, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- I just wanted to say please don't be downhearted and try again! I've used your RfA a lot to self-assess before I consider going for the mop, and I really hope that you get them eventually because I think you would be a great addition! Better luck next time! --GedUK 14:39, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- FT, I'd like to add my words of encouragement, too. Sometimes a strong opposer generates a bandwagon effect at RfA which can be hard to overcome. I have no doubt that you will make a fine admin, and would be happy to nominate you in a few months, once the Speedy delete tagging issue is resolved. JGHowes talk 15:43, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Your sig
[edit]I just noticed your signature is quite messy HTML and I wanted to propose a clean code that is shorter (in the edit window at least) and achieves the same results. Instead of
<font color=#0036ff>Flying</font><b><font color=#e41a1a>Toaster</font></b>
you should try using
<span style="color: #0036FF">Flying</span><span style="color: #E41A1A">Toaster</span>
Just an idea Regards SoWhy 17:31, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, but messy HTML can be a good thing with signatures, since it can be shorter in the edit window and HTML Tidy will make it all nice and proper once it's written into the page. So if you're aiming for the shortest code to show your sig, FT, use → FlyingToaster 18:33, 11 March 2009 (UTC). If you can live with a slightly different shade of blue you can shave off three more characters with
<font color=#0036ff>Flying<font color=#e41a1a>Toaster</font>
→ FlyingToaster 18:33, 11 March 2009 (UTC) and three more with a noticeably different shade of red:<font color=#03f>Flying<font color=#e41a1a>Toaster</font>
→ FlyingToaster 18:33, 11 March 2009 (UTC)<font color=#03f>Flying<font color=#e22>Toaster</font>

- I thought the font tag was deprecated? —Nn123645 (talk) 21:42, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- It sure is in the HTML spec, but we are writing wiki code here. The MediaWiki could easily render a font tag as a span with the appropriate CSS styles, if it were inclined to. --Amalthea 21:44, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Using <font> is bad style nowadays but my point was the messiness of the code, not the shortness. Yes, it can be made shorter but I'd prefer correct XHTML. SoWhy 21:53, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit]I noticed your comment on User talk:Washingblack about the above. While I agree that these articles are probably hoaxes, can I just point out that someone born in Belfast would actually be very likely to have joined the British Army. Until the early 20th century a very large proportion of the British Army was Irish - a much higher proportion than the proportion of Irish people in the population of the British Isles as a whole. Up to 40% of some nominally English, Scottish and Welsh regiments were in fact Irish, and that's not including the several regiments which were actually nominally Irish. The Duke of Wellington himself was an Irish Protestant (although he didn't like to be reminded of the fact). -- Necrothesp (talk) 00:04, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Something about this article makes me pause. The Times of 7 November 1984 reports that a Saudi Airlines flight from London to Riydah via Jeddah was seized by two hijackers from North Yemen, diverted to Tehran, where passengers and crew overpowered the hijackers. A lot of details in the article correspond to reports in The Times - there were eleven Americans on board, the hijackers made political and monetary demands, the plane landed at 3.05am. However, the report in The Times omits the flight number, the detailed account of how the lead hijacker was overpowered doesn't tally with the press report, and the presence of so much news media in Iran strikes me as unlikely.
I don't intend to object to your proposed deletion; so much of the article fails to meet WP:V, and it's far from clear where the boundary lies. Honour demands that I note the result of my research somewhere. There was a hijacking incident on this date, and I strongly suspect it meets WP:N. Full reference for the article I've consulted: The Times, Wednesday 7 November 1984 p.9 col A CJPargeter (talk) 12:29, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- There was definitely a hijacking, but I do not intend to object either because the article needs a complete rewrite and a new title. However, it's amazing how much of the article is verifiable based on 17 news reports I see on Lexis-Nexis quoting witness statements and sources. The real question for me is, does the article title meet WP:V? How can we confirm it was Flight 043? And does this merit its own article or should it be included in the list of hijackings? Is it even that notable at all? Discuss, but please know the article describes an actual event. :) --Martinship (talk) 07:53, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- Hey CJPargeter and Martinship. CJPargeter: you said The Times of 7 November 1984 mentions a hijacking - do you have the article either online or physically? That sounds like all we'd need to possibly create an article based on anything that's known. Unfortunately you're both right - without any sources we're just not going to be able to verify this. Since an article about the event would require a complete rewrite anyway, I don't mind too much if it expires PROD, but if anyone finds anything please give me a poke and I'll write the article. FlyingToaster 13:31, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Hey Toaster! Sorry to butt in, but I can confirm that the Times of 7 November 1984 does report a hijacking occurred of a Saudi Arabian aircraft on that date, under the headline 'Passengers Escape After Overpowering Hijackers of London-Riyadh jet'. Skinny87 (talk) 10:05, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
