Bhumibol Adulyadej
Hello, you reverted an edit to Bhumibol Adulyadej, thereby removing one child from Ploypailin Jensen. On the Ploypailin Jensen page this child is mentioned. Should this child be removed from there as well, or is your revert incorrect? --FredTC (talk) 11:31, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
- I admit i first misread your edit as vandalism or test, but having reviewed your edit again now, it is unsourced. Nor Facebook, nor another Wikipedia article is a reliable source to be used on Wikipedia. A facebook page may sometimes be used as a primary source if it is an official page, but in this case, the subject is too important for that—better sources must exist.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 11:58, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
- It was not my edit, but I did a check by looking at that other page. So the other edits by this IP addres, including Sirikit, for this child should be reverted too I think. --FredTC (talk) 12:04, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

No worries
Dear Farang Rak Tham,
No worries! Most of my research is invisible to Wikipedia, so I was surprised to find a mention. Many thanks.

WikiCup 2019 Reminder
Hi. I'm DannyS712 (talk), and I just wanted to remind you that you have signed up to compete in this year's WikiCup! There are about 2 weeks left before the first round ends – if you haven't yet made your first submission, there is still time to start; if you have already started, keep up the good work. See your submissions page: here. Good luck!

- Thanks, DannyS712, but i have been unable to find any reviewers for my GA nominations, which i thought would help me compete.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 15:46, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Farang Rak Tham: I wouldn't count on finding someone in the next 2 weeks - maybe review a GA nomination yourself? If you get those 4 points you should be able to pass onto the next round. --DannyS712 (talk) 18:14, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- @DannyS712:, well then i should pass on, because i did a review. Isn't this showing on my contributions page?--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 23:59, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Farang Rak Tham: it is, so you should be able to participate in round 2 - hopefully someone does a GAR for your nomination before that ends --DannyS712 (talk) 00:06, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

- Thank you! It's not without irony that I keep it alive by writing about those who died. Just today, I noticed that a great person died whose article I had begun in 2016, - while he was still alive, for a change. His best-known song begins "Das Weizenkorn muss sterben" (The wheat kernel must die) with a refain "Geheimnis des Glaubens: im Tod ist das Leben". How would you translate that? "Mystery of faith: in death there's life". Chilling. Just yesterday we sang a hymn he translated from Dutch, not the one mentioned in the article. I am determined to write about the wheat kernel (or seed?) today, please watch. - I also have several GA noms open ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:38, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

Responding
Hello, here is VenusFeuerFalle again. Sorry for the delay, but I guess you will understand it. Since the discussion on the Fallen Angel-Talkpage is closed, I would respond here. First, yes I would like to participiate on "Did you know?", but I am currently reading how to do this, since it is my first GA-Article. Probably one of the reason I wasn't prepared as most other Wikipedians are than requesting a GA-Review (as you probably noticed already). Second, I am uncertain to review one of yours. It would be my first GA review, and I think it is on one hand a good time to start, but on the otherhand, the last days on Wikipedia somehow exhausted me and the next semester starts. I usually need to mentally prepare myself for that. Therefore, I would like to try a review of one of the short articles, if I see enough "power" left. (You remember my exams at beginning of February? One is still left and the it was postponed over the entire February and March, now finally happening within the next semester). Maybe I get quick back into the subject, then I would review one of the shorter articles nominated by you.--VenusFeuerFalle (talk) 22:58, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
- No problems, VenusFeuerFalle. I enjoyed your research about fallen angels. Take good care!--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 23:16, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Ānanda
On 28 April 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Ānanda, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Ānanda (sculpture pictured) became the Buddha's attendant, on condition that he would never receive any material benefit from the position? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Ānanda. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Ānanda), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Cult of the book
I received your ping concerning the "cult of the book" and exclusive (scriptural?) authority in Mahayana buddhism. I will answer here because I am not sure that these details will benefit the afd discussion. The cult of the book hypothesis has been presented in the context of the origin of Mahayana. There is an ongoing discussion about the cult of the book concept and I think Hartmann presents a good argument stating: ". It is striking that these texts make mention only of themselves, as though no other texts existed that espoused similarly meritorious rewards. This communicative strategy makes use of the commonly accepted idea that texts offer protection and beneflts, such as punya, to people and places. It also conveys the notion that certain texts are more apt to do so than others. What scholars often identify as a "cult" of the book may perhaps be equally well understood as a way of promoting a particular text in a highly competitive environment (cf. Harrison 2006: 148, n. 57). One is reminded here that Mahäyäna sütras are normative texts that may or may not describe a reality. To assess this question, we require confirmation from other sources, which appears to be absent (cf Schopen 1975: 171 f.). This is frequently the case in ancient India, where usually very meager direct evidence on the life ways of people is outweighed by a gigantic amount of normative literature. For this reason, it may be difficult to demonstrate the existence of a Buddhist cult of the book in India during the first millennium, but the phenomenon is well documented in later periods and in other areas of the Buddhist world." ([1], p. 104. Dolce, L. analyses Nichirens views and uses of scripture in "Canonization and Decanonization" edited by A Van Debeek, Karel Van Der Toorn, p. 229- [2]. Different denominations of Nichiren Buddhis will propably have different positions on (scriptural) authority. JimRenge (talk) 21:00, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, JimRenge. Schopen is a contrarian, and I don't agree with his doubts about the historicity of the Buddha, but I have noticed that apart from that, he is often proven right, and his opinions often have become mainstream. Regardless, I don't think the article about the universal sola scriptura is going to work out—the outline of the subject as well as the title is too vague to prove notability, and the guy doesn't appear to have many friends that try to help him prove such notability.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 21:17, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

On 29 May 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Five precepts, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. - Amakuru, that is a considerable modification from the original ALT 2 hook, and as such, does not appear to be supported by the sources cited. Has this been preceded by any discussion?--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 11:55, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
- ¡Ay, caramba! I am sorry for this - I acted on a report made at WP:TRM, and it was based on a complete misreading of the article - I saw the text about Ahimsa being the most important principle and thought that was the thing being talked about in the hook, and that it was therefore inaccurate. I should have checked the nomination page and the article in more detail. I have corrected it back to the approved version now. Thanks, and apologies once again for the mix up. — Amakuru (talk) 12:12, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
- No problem, Amakuru. Time allowing, we can fix any errors, of course. But my concern is that the five precepts is a set of rules (among which not to kill), as opposed to a set of principles (non-harming). This is what the sources say, anyway.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 12:16, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
- Amakuru, what's the plan next?--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 08:06, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
- Morning Farang Rak Tham. I'm not sure what you mean by the plan... is there something that you think needs changing in the article? As far as I know, the mistake was just in misreading what the article actually said. Perhaps there's a way to phrase it highlighting the difference between the "non-harming principle" and the "non-killing precept" that would have avoided confusion, but I don't think it's urgent to make that change. Maybe something to work on if you're considering improving the article up to FA standard in future. Thanks — Amakuru (talk) 08:24, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Farang Rak Tham, back on April 29 you listed the Motivation crowding theory article as a Good Article. The nominator of that article, W.s.campbell, took the advice in the automated message informing them of the article's success, and created a DYK nomination page, replied to you on the GA review page that same day, and hasn't edited since.
Unfortunately, they neglected the final step in the DYK nomination process, transcluding the nomination on the Nominations page, which I've only now just noticed, seven weeks later. They also, being new to the DYK process, did not fill out the nomination template correctly (no bold link to the article or even giving its name, etc.).
Do you think you would be interested in taking on the effective responsibilities of the nominator for this one? That is to say, clean up the nomination page and then, when a DYK reviewer comes along, making any hook or article adjustments they request? If so, this can go ahead. If not, then the nomination page wlll probably be closed as unsuccessful. Please let me know; I'm happy to help this to proceed—once updated, you or I could transclude the nomination under April 29 on the DYK nominations page. Thank you very much. BlueMoonset (talk) 22:14, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

- pinging.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 12:37, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
- I checked, and the original nomination was made on December 3, 2018, was subsequently approved and later promoted to Prep 1 on December 31, 2018, and then moved with the set to Queue 1 on January 3, 2019. It was pulled from the queue on January 4 due to sourcing issues, and nothing further appears to have been done with it. Effectively, it was rejected when it was pulled and the nomination wasn't reopened. As a new GA, it qualifies anew, so it can go through the process again. I'm going to move it to April 28, since that's the date the article was listed as a GA. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:20, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, BlueMoonset. Looks like might get pretty extensive. You said you already tried to contact the original editor, right?--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 08:17, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!
The Buddhism Barnstar | ||
Even though I have mostly left Wikipedia and I am no longer writing articles, I still pop over here now and then to see what is going on. This barnstar is to thank you for all your excellent contributions to articles about Buddhism and other subjects. You have done excellent work writing and reviewing articles and bringing them up to "Good Article" status. Back when I was still writing articles to bring them up to GA status, I knew that, whenever I needed someone to review an article for me, you were always right there. Furthermore, you were always a supremely gracious and thoughtful reviewer and I want you to know that I really appreciate that. I consider you one of Wikipedia's finest editors. —Katolophyromai (talk) 01:49, 29 August 2019 (UTC) |
- Thank you, Kato! I really appreciate that. Since I am dong mostly religious topics, it is sometimes a bit of a quiet corner of Wikipedia, so I appreciate the feedback. I am currently working on the Great Renunciation, which reminds me of that moment when Gilgamesh left to find the eternal life: the gods tried to dissuade him from the journey ("Don't you know that the gods have hidden the eternal life from man's sight?"), but he went anyway. One of the best stories ever. And thank you for reminding me of it.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 19:13, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

Buddha page pic
Hi,
It seems you reverted back my edit of the profile pic for the Gautama Buddha page, citing this talk page. Ok, but just to let you know - I wouldn't have changed the pic in the first place if there was some kind of warning or tag on the Infobox source code page, that said to read the talk page first. Maybe you or one of the other major editors for that page can add it so you don't run into issues like that later. Thanks.Rush922(talk) 11:36, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
- You did nothing wrong, because it is not always possible to know exactly which edits are deemed controversial and require consensus first. But reverting you and asking you to explain your edit on the talk page first, is one way to communicate that I think this change is controversial. See also WP:BRD. Hi! I hope you remember me (you reviewed my article on Vyasatirtha). As you are interested in Buddhism, I was wondering if you could help me build an article. The concept of Pratyekabuddha is very intriguing to me. The article is underdeveloped as of now and required expansion. I don't want to impose of course. What are you working on currently? Request for Article Review
After review of Wikipedia contributions, and other dimensional review, from above the weave it seemed appropriate to make this request. The Article Church Of The Creator specifically the talk page will provide the information. It is also relevant to review the Article Creativity. I am a COI user in Wikipedia classifications. Thank your for considering. In Oneness of Service to our Planet, and beyond. Michael S. Legions (talk) 10:31, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
- Michael S. Legions what kind of review do you want me to do?--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 11:24, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
- Review as an Editor of Wikipedia, within its intent, purpose and disciplines, the Article Church of the Creator. Review, to discern the need, if any, for further editing or modification. Best expression to convey truth, knowledge, awareness and perhaps understanding to Wikipedia users. Your statement, “I am fascinated by religion and philosophy” adds perspective not necessarily shared by all Editors of this and other Articles within Wikipedia.
- That’s it. There is no “I want” in my request, I am sure of the origins of the request and I felt strongly to deliver it, the rest, I believe will become self-evident if it is yours to do.
- If you have not looked, here is a short quote, “root issues,” as seen by another Wikipedia Editor, on the Talk page. “…Hey, I haven't fully reviewed the cumulative changes to this article, but I was involved back in 2014 or so. One needs to understand that there was (is?) in fact an entirely evil white supremacist / indeed awful and racist organization which took a similar name to this benign church. And there was notable litigation, which led to a state of Illinois(?) supreme court ruling that the racist organization could no longer use the similar/overlapping name. Maybe they were shut down entirely, through fines and what not, i don't recall now. And then this benign organization suffered within Wikipedia, by obnoxious/perverse editing which imposed a redirect from the name of the benign church to the evil racist one. It was truly awful, and mean, in total, what Wikipedia was doing, supposedly on basis that the evil racist one was notable, and the benign one should be covered within the article about the evil racist one. That was really mean. I helped get this article re-established, with goal that it should positively cover the good organization to an appropriate degree, including with some mention of the naming conflict and litigation. And it is proper to mention the racism/white supremacy of the evil one, explicitly..." --user:Doncram (talk) 00:36, 17 August 2019 (UTC)”
- Again thank you. If you take a look at what is there, choose to do any editing and need any input from me as a COI, I will respond to your requests. Michael S. Legions (talk) 15:26, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi!
I just wanted to say hello and let you know I am back on WP--for a year anyway. I am glad to be back. Wikipedia is actually fun when you're not harassed. You were always great and helpful, so I just wanted to say thanx and hope to see you around. Hope you and yours are well in this crazy time. Jenhawk777 (talk) 17:17, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
- I am healthy and safe, thanks for your concern. I am glad to see you have returned. I have become less active on Wikipedia—it has been great while it lasted. I have some non-profit work that has grown significantly, and it is more difficult for me to keep up the Wikipedia routine.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 09:03, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

- @Farang Rak Tham: Real life does get in the way of online life sometimes. I think that's probably actually a good thing. I am just now discovering how fun WP can be when you aren't being systematically harassed! So this is good for me, just as a break will no doubt be good for you. I wish you well and all good luck in your endeavors.Jenhawk777 (talk) 16:41, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
- Jenhawk777 Sorry to hear you were harassed—I wasn't aware. I hope you are happy and free from such disturbances now.
- I still remember the article you wrote about textual criticism, and it has helped me many times in understanding religion, and even Buddhist studies better.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 19:11, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Farang Rak Tham: The person that stalked and harassed me has been banned from WP by arbitration for a year. After that, he can have his case reviewed yet again--so I may only be here a year, we'll see. On the very first article I attempted to work on, he showed up and followed me from then on. People would tell me WP wasn't that kind of place normally, but he made it that kind of place for me. I think he had a problem with women and I have no doubt at all that he hated Christianity and anyone who had anything to say about it that wasn't derogatory. He was a bitter angry man and he is why I left WP for almost two years. If someone on the arbitration committee hadn't mentioned me, I never would have known about the review of his case, since that mention showed up in my email. At any rate, it was unanimous to ban him totally for a year, and now hopefully that's behind me. Every one else on WP is lovely, and what I remember most about you is how patient and kind you were going through that long long article. You were great, and it's wonderful to hear you gained something from it as well. I have another long one waiting for a reviewer right now and a third one in the wings--I don't want to have two nominated at one time. In the meantime, I am working on another in my sandbox. I found someone who has created articles using blogs, original research and lots of plagiarism. It's very distressing! So I am slowly working my way through rewriting them one at a time. It's peaceful. I wish peace and wholeness and well-being and good purpose in your life. You are a kind heart and I wish you all that is good. Good luck with you NGO. Jenhawk777 (talk) 03:14, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Jenhawk777: I am relieved that the harassment is over now. Keep up the good work!--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 11:31, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

Ananda Metteyya Lotus Picture
Good Sir, Glad you liked the lotus image from the Buddhasāsana Samāgama publication "Buddhism: An Illustrated Quarterly Review" on the Ananda Metteyya page. I have worked hard on this article, and hope to be done shortly, it is a gift to mankind, and hope all see the path to enlightment. NirodhaDhamma (talk) 10:10, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- NirodhaDhamma, It's a good article! Consider having it reviewed for GA, that'll prevent future vandalism as well.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 19:28, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

Editor of the Week
Editor of the Week | ||
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your timely assistance. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project) |
User:Alarichall submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
- I nominate Farang Rak Tham to be Editor of the Week. This editor registered about five years ago and in that time has racked up an impressive 15,787 edits to English Wikipedia. I first encountered them when they chose to assess my nomination of Elf as a good article. I was quite clueless about the process, and Farang Rak Tham was extremely thorough and diligent in helping me revise the article to meet the criteria -- and it's a long article, so this was a big task. They have evidently performed this service for at least thirty others, while being willing to fail nominations where appropriate. Correspondingly, I see that although Farang Rak Tham has created only eleven articles, five of these have GA status, and this editor has been instrumental in editing over twenty-four articles to receiving GA status. (There's an incomplete list here, emphasising how many have been translated into other Wikipedias, but I also passed 2017–2020 Thai temple fraud investigations, so there are probably more.) I am particularly impressed and grateful to see that many of Farang Rak Tham's good articles are on complex Buddhist theological topics: these are much more challenging to write well than neatly defined and straightforwardly factual topics like, say, biographies, and moreover have helped considerably to improve English Wikipedia's coverage of Asian culture. Articles like Great Renunciation, Filial piety in Buddhism, Five precepts, and Merit (Buddhism) are truly mighty undertakings. The editor's talk page says 'this user is no longer very active on Wikipedia' -- but they are still making about one edit per day, so this is counting from a high base! I would like to congratulate them on their past achievements, and emphasise how much we will welcome their re-engagement with Wikipedia if they are inclined to at some point in the future. Editor User:Vami_IV seconded this nomination.
