eerste nl.wikimedia.org ontmoeting

[edit]

[edit]

Hello. Why did you removed the link to Polish page at Bimah article? --Sheynhertzגעשׁ״ך 16:23, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The polish page says, as far as i can see, that it is a disambig-page. I am cleaning up the mess of a dutch robot, and saw this. If you polish is better then mine, please correct it. But the reason was the disambig-sign aboe the polish article. A normal article should not link with a disambig-page... effeietsanders 16:28, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't guess

[edit]

Please don't make destructive edits (removal of material), like this one, based on guesses. That brochure is actually available online here. You could have determined that for yourself. Thanks --Justanother 14:06, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please assume good faith. I was very much wondered that this brochure was given out by a ministry of Germany :S Usually this kind of propaganda is given out by foundations, hence my edit. Maybe adding the link to the image descriptionpage would be usefull (to proof your point) Btw, it might imho be better to mention official Bayern paper instead of German. effeietsanders 12:15, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I do WP:AGF. That is why I simply ask that you not remove material based on a guess. That is not "good faith editing". If you question the accuracy of something in the article and cannot prove it one away or another yourself then bring up your issue in the talk page rather than imprinting your uncertainty on the article. You should be the one assuming good faith and assume that the editor that put it there knew what he was talking about. I had already made all those changes you suggest when I corrected your edit. --Justanother 12:28, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania proceedings

[edit]

Hey, thanks for getting in touch. Yes, the presentation is given, but the 'edit status' line refers not to the presentation itself but to the Proceedings: it's 'missing' because (as far as we know) you've not submitted the text of your presentation (or any other material such as slides or notes) for inclusion in the Proceedings. (In fact, not many presenters have: I need to get round to having a push about this.)

So, if you would like to send in your text I will get it uploaded, edited and finished off right away. There are some guidelines at [1] which explain what we are after and what we'll do to it once we get it. :) The only change to that document I would suggest is that for the moment it is probably safer to send submissions directly to me (ngb [at] mit.edu) rather than to the wikimania email address listed. I look forward to hearing from you! --ⁿɡ͡b Nick Boalch\talk 23:38, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fyi: I had only a few lines of notes myself on beforehand, as it was a BoF. I wrote a summery of the discussion and the whole trip, and went around with it a few times at the #wikimania channel, no response. Finally I dumped it somewhere on meta i guess, no clue where. But as I said, I had no slides, no real notes, most of it was from a few lines on paper which were at the end not at all about the discussion. All the notes that are relevant are on the page I linked to and maybe it's talkpage. That's the whole idea of a BoF :). effeietsanders 19:36, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we should probably change the template around so it allows for BOFs and the like, and so it's a little clearer what the template is for. And no clue where you dumped your notes? :( I thought they were going to end up on wikimania06. cheers, -- User:phoebe (brassratgirl)]] /(talk) 17:03, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Were not really notes, but I think a short summary. (written quite some time afterwards). The summary of the introduction and of the main questions (or which were intended to be main questions) are on that very proceedingspage and it's talkpage. effeietsanders 18:44, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Details Needed - What tags should I use?

[edit]

The image tags for Image:AC_Propulsion_eBox_left_front.jpg already include what I think is sufficient justification for fair use in Wikipedia. It seems your opinion of the sufficiency of that rationale differs. Please provide specific details explaining why you think the existing justification is insufficient.

The image was used by the AC Propulsion press release announcing the availability of their eBox. In my non-wiki-lawyer reading, the press release usage provided sufficient basis for fair-use of the image in Wikimedia. I went one step further as well, just to be sure, and personally contacted the photographer to obtained permission to use the photo in Wikipedia.

Here are the tags I chose to convey that information about the image:

I should also mention that the boilerplate text you pasted into my discussion page is not friendly and needs to be made more specifically helpful. this unsigned comment has been posted by user:Mwarren us.

Hi, sorry for the delay, Hard to find internet in taipei. I explained my comment in the template, as I said that the image is replaceable with a free alternative. The object projected is not destroyed, still exists, so can be fotographed again, and licensed freely. That makes that the image does not comply with the required reasons. I hope this explanation is enough for you. That I put a boilerplate is because i understood that that is the way here. Wrt\iting something myself might not deliver the required info. I am not sure what exactly is needed to get the deletion process done, as i originate from nlwiki, and even after 45 minutes searching, i still dont get the whole system... sorry if my lack of ability to understand the complicated system offended you. effeietsanders 15:52, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the expanded explanation here, but it's too late to fix things and should have been in the original communication. The boilerplate pasted in was so absurdly arrogant and annoying that I have chosen to stop helping with the eBox article to avoid any further annoyance from wiki-lawyers. A.W.52 rationale

[edit]

Two built, one crashed in 1949, the other one was scrapped in 1954. Until someone comes up with a time machine, the fair use stands. Hence the "none available" clause in the template. - Emt147 Burninate! 23:12, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy Leonard Stolk

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Jimmy Leonard Stolk, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Speedy deletion of FEMS

[edit]

A tag has been placed on FEMS, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

it's a disambiguation page that has no navigable links

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. macbookair3140 (talk) 15:57, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. You removed the shield illustration from Rijksmonument stating "incorrect". As I also see it in nl:Rijksmonument I presume that it does mean something. Could you please correct the article instead of removing the (apparently somewhat relevant) image? Is there some other shield which is more relevant? Best regards. --Muhandes (talk) 18:19, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the shield is relevant to the Hague Convention, not to Rijksmonuments. There is some overlap (~10%), but with this amount of information it only enforces the confusion. In the current context it is easier and better to remove it. --effeietsanders 06:07, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Right. Is the current way better? I think it adds to the history aspect of the article--Muhandes (talk) 09:24, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hoi Effeietsanders. M.vr.gr. 94.210.224.208 (talk) 12:38, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on First Gerbrandy cabinet, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a foreign language article that was copied and pasted from another Wikimedia project, or was transwikied out to another project. Please see Wikipedia:Translation to learn about requests for, and coordination of, translations from foreign-language Wikipedias into English.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Following up

[edit]

Hey Lodewijk! I just wanted to follow up on your question during the WMF metrics meeting about our Template A/B testing project. We just got a test started in DE, and are analyzing tests in EN and PT Wikipedias too. But I'd definitely be interested in brainstorm on NL about any possibly useful tests. What do you think? Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 19:30, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steven,
I guess we would have to throw it into the community - which can be quite sensitive to change sometimes. Maybe they are up for it, under the right conditions, but it probably depends on all kind of minor details. I wouldn't have the time or energy to do it all myself, but I'll ask around a bit to see if I can find someone who can be of more help. effeietsanders 19:34, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, if we just want to start out with an explanation of how it works, what's required, and maybe create a list of testing options, I think that would be a good first step for NL. That way people can get a view of what would go on during a test, and we can tailor it to how NL in particular works. Thanks for the help, Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 19:55, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you recently edited Teylers Stichting, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Foundation and Testament (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Ad van der Steur, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Removing Speedy at Ad van der Steur

[edit]

Hi Effeietsanders, you recently removed a deletion tag from Ad van der Steur. Because Wikipedia policy does not allow the creator of the page to remove speedy deletion tags, an automated program has replaced the tag. Although the deletion proposal may be incorrect, removing the tag is not the correct way for you to contest the deletion, even if you are more experienced than the nominator. Instead, please use the talk page to explain why the page should not be deleted. Remember to be patient, there is no harm in waiting for another experienced user to review the deletion and judge what the right course of action is. As you are involved, and therefore potentially biased, you should refrain from doing this yourself. Thank you, - SDPatrolBot (talk) 16:02, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, and I approached the admin about it too. effeietsanders 16:03, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Removing Speedy at Ad van der Steur

[edit]

Please do not remove speedy deletion notices from pages you have created yourself, as you did with Ad van der Steur. If you believe the page should not be deleted, you may contest the deletion by clicking on the button that says: Click here to contest this speedy deletion, which appears inside the speedy deletion notice. This will allow you to make your case on the article's talk page. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you. - SDPatrolBot (talk) 16:24, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I just thought I'd take a moment to make you aware of the {{inuse}} template, as I believe you could probably be making use of it as I type. Good luck with the new article. Happy editing. :)  -- WikHead (talk) 15:33, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion. I usually just write it in the summary - but mostly people seem to miss that, and then put speedy templates or warnings up anyway. So hence this text, because I'm always too lazy to go look for the right template, and it is only for a short amount of time anyway :) effeietsanders 15:53, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

John Cuthbertson

[edit]

Hi Effeietsanders, I see you have moved John Cuthbertson to John Robert Cuthbertson. Nothing wrong with that, but it's good form to first tidy up the incoming links before setting up John Cuthbertson as a dab page. Because if you don't, it obviously leaves pages behind that link to this dab page. Not too much of a drama, but it does break things and for that reason, it is accepted protocol that this is done by the person who moves pages. I shall go and tidy this up, but thought that it's probably useful to point this out to you, so that you are aware of what ought to happen. Schwede66 08:02, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WLM unique ID

[edit]

Hi,

How do we create this unique ID? I could not find any information on the many WLM pages. Thanks a lot! Yann (talk) 12:06, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yann,
It is important that within a certain defined environment, every monument can be defined uniquely. For example, within a country. Usually the authorities give such an ID to every monument. In some countries this is unfortunately not the case - and the numbers are given on a more local level. Then a unique ID can be 'created' by combining information. If I take India as an example, the combination of the state (, sometimes the circle) and the ID within that circle/state will give a unique identifier. This is mostly important when the information is imported into the international database. However, we're trying to avoid to do 'original research' and make up a number ourselves. Hope that clarifies - otherwise please leave another (more specific?) question. effeietsanders 13:49, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you created lists for nearly all states, including ID numbers. For Madhya Pradesh, the monuments of Orchha have disappeared. For Gwalior Fort (#146 in MP West), it is a very big place with several monuments within. What do we do in this case? I think this will also be the case for other big monuments (Taj Mahal, Delhi Red Fort, Agra Fort, etc.). Thanks for your help, Yann (talk) 05:59, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Yann,
I'm not sure what you mean with 'disappeared' in Orchha. I assume you're referring to these? They are indeed not on the ASI list - which means that officially they are apparently not recognized. I'm sure they're great buildings, but they are not covered by the ASI recognition as are probably many many other buildings that should be (I was amazed by how short this list was). To do Indian heritage justice, you probably need a second source besides ASI (and seperate lists) like INTACH to cover more structures. But so far it doesn't seem one has been found that is available to enough extent.
Yes, Orchha temples and palaces are important and famous monuments, so I don't understand that there are not in the list. Shouldn't we just add them? How do we create the ID number in that case? Yann (talk) 11:49, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The question about 'very big monuments' (which could also be considered a collection of monuments) is common in most countries. We can't simply split them up of course, but nobody forbids people to take many pictures of them, and simply put them in a category. In those cases, I would try to include an overview picture, and add a link to the relevant commons category in the description. effeietsanders 07:10, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So we assign the same ID for all monuments inside the Red Fort or the Agra Fort, is that right? I am not sure what this ID is used for, so I can't give an opinon. But we need much more detailed identification for Commons. of course. Yann (talk) 11:49, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, if the ASI considered it as one single monument, for the purpose of this identifier we would consider it as such, too. This is something that's different in many countries unfortunately. Of course you're right that you should motivate people to photograph many different buildings/details within the identified monuments. Since the monuments in India are generally very large, it might make sense to include the commons category in the table? effeietsanders 11:53, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List of heritage sites in ...

[edit]

You have obviously put a lot of effort into translating the List of South African Heritage sites into English. I don't understand the template you are using for these lists, so I can't do this myself, but could you please change it, so the column headings in the English Wikipedia are actually in English?

There also appears to be a redundant column e.g. in List of heritage sites in the Cape every single entry under "District" is "The Cape". If this column is omitted, it will allow the Notes column to expand, making it more readable, and the list shorter.

Arjayay (talk) 18:03, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arjayay,
Thanks for the compliments. However, the original source from the South African government is already in English. The headers were already in English, but another user accidentally translated it into Afrikaans when trying to transfer the lists to afwiki. (have reverted that, thanks for spotting!)
The column for district is not quite redundant though. The same template is being used in several pages and only on some pages the district is the same for every heritage site. But if someone with template magic feeling can change the layout so that things are more smooth, that would be welcome of course. effeietsanders 18:09, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You seem to have solved it - despite your comments - Templates are beyond me, which is why I didn't do it myself
Looking into this a bit more, several entries seem to be truncated e.g. the second entry under List of heritage sites in Richmond, to which I have added (???) below:-
It is a single storey building of U form with a corrugated iron saddle roof and central gable on the(???) This impressive Cape Dutch style house was built in the middle of the 19th century. A board carrying (???) Type of site: Commercial Current use: Commercial - Restaurant. De Oude Dak is one of only three known Cape Dutch style buildings in the Northern Cape and is the ol(???)
Arjayay (talk) 18:29, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is correct. Unfortunately the source data for this wasn't perfect and truncated. I didn't find a way to automatically remove these truncated sentences, so I thought it would be wiser to take the principle that everyone can edit, and remove/fix the truncated sentences. Feel free to remove parts that don't make sense and fix grammar - unfortunately I don't have an easy way of fixing this myself. I created these lists to help the South African Wiki Loves Monuments volunteers primarily, because they were desperate on how to get to this point from their excel table :) Hence. effeietsanders 19:09, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Editing by others to fix the gaps might be a bit problematic, as the list I looked at (the Free State one), doesn't have any source(s) listed. YSSYguy (talk) 06:54, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That is why I only used that field in the description - that means it is not critical and can be removed, or cut back. The description is not intended to be just the 'official' description, but just a good wikipedia-like description of the building. If you know the building it shouldn't be too hard to fix that particular building. Those won't be many, but given time... If you want I can share the excel file which this is based on (just send me an email) if you want to try to improve based on that. effeietsanders 07:50, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Moving WLM lists into mainspace

[edit]

Good call on moving site lists which were part of project space into main space. I was just thinking that would be useful. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:08, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I made Lists of Monuments of National Importance in India and I see that there is also need for a sorting of the state monuments. I will sort the state monuments before next Monday in the same way, and otherwise look over everything and try to connect all these pages to the articles about the individual Indian states. Thanks again for getting this started. I am really interested in sorting this for India now that I see what can be done. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:42, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great article! Thanks for that. Would it make sense to differentiate between States and Union Territories? It seems to be done everywhere. Especially for State Protected Monuments it is important, because it seems Union Territories don't have anything in that category. effeietsanders 13:44, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I do not immediately know what is best. "Union Territories" seem like states in some ways and cities within states in others. Generally these are areas with their own government which would be harmed if they were under the control of a larger state government, like modern developed Delhi would be harmed if it had to work within the context of undeveloped Uttar Pradesh's government infrastructure. I might just have one page with lists of all kinds of protected monuments, whether national or state government, because for the reader they probably will only want to find lists that are local to a given area and do not care which government entity designated them. In the end, I might have a page called "Designated Monuments in Uttar Pradesh" which breaks other lists apart but which includes all monuments which are within the State of Uttar Pradesh whether they are national monuments or state monuments. I still would want to separate the lists, so in the UP monument page there would be a list of national monuments and state monuments but both would be on one page instead of separate pages. The problem that I want to avoid is that these lists both designate monuments in the same places but since they are not cross referenced a person in one place might not know there are two lists. I want to work on this - if you can give me the weekend I will do something and then create a centralized discussion somewhere. I have not really answered your question - sorry, I need to review the data more. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:09, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I wanted to acknowledge that I said I would do something and still have not, and will update you when I do. I would like to say that I will be done before the weekend but maybe I will finish this weekend. My hope is that having an article as a portal to all the lists will make the photos more easy to navigate. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:34, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I combined state and national monuments in India into one list. See Lists of monuments in India. There is a blank column in the table that I plan to develop in the future with more practical lists showing monuments in geographical proximity, for example, in the same city. I really think that most users would prefer to see monuments sorted in such a way that they could see what is near them, and also I think it would be useful for city article to link to a list for that city. I am also talking about this with others. Thanks for doing what you do with WLM. I hope that lots of people tell you that the idea of WLM is one of the greatest cultural innovations ever in any context, because it is and you are awesome for your part in it. Tiny type

[edit]

I looked in on List of Monuments of National Importance in Punjab and ended up squinting: the text in the list is too small. It forced me to change font size to read the list, then change back to read the rest of Wikipedia. Please consider using the default font size the rest of the encyclopedia uses, and spare those of us with deficient eyesight.  Thundersnow  09:23, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thundersnow,
Thanks for your message. I wouldn't be against such a change in principle. However, practically speaking I have just copied this template from another one and adapted it. The problem we seem to face is if we increase the font size, that column widths are getting more complex. Since I'm not sure how to handle that properly, I wouldn't dare to touch this myself at this point. Perhaps it is best if you bring it up at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_India/Wiki_Loves_Monuments and then I'll try to point the right people to that discussion. effeietsanders 22:48, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unused India images

[edit]

Hello! I do not know anything about Indian monuments - how can you tell an image has been tagged wrongly? If you can give me some clues as to "wrong" I can start working from the other end of the list. I am even willing to crouch into my screen to read the teeny, tiny text. I just need to know I am not going to make things worse by "helping."  Thundersnow  13:36, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Thundersnow! The things I kept in mind mostly is comparing images if there are multiple images available, checking if they didn't just upload a plaque (instead of an actual photo) and whether it fits the description (if it says it is a church and it shows a temple... it is doubtful :) ). But many of them are not very specifically named, so I don't always know either. If in doubt, just don't place it yet and leave it for the locals. Just for the record: I'm not a local either :) Maybe User:Karthikndr has more tips. Thanks for your help! effeietsanders 13:51, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I did not think you were a local, but I considered you might have a specialty I do not, such as historian or photographer. I shall use your tips to get by; everything you said is what I do to get by on the US sites.
Shall I start at the bottom of the list? And I apologize in advance if we have edit conflicts - I find they happen a lot when more than one person is working off the same list.  Thundersnow  14:05, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I usually save after every state/territorium (or even more often) to avoid conflicts as much as possible. Feel free to start where you like, I won't be able to work on it the coming hour(s) anyway. Thanks! effeietsanders 14:16, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I missed your message here before, found it today and hopefully answered it? Mrjohncummings (talk) 09:59, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I ran across this article while correcting typos. There were fragments and duplicates and I did the best cleanup I could, but the restoration needs help. Hope you will take a look. Thanks! --LilHelpa (talk) 21:35, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help! I'm afraid most of the typos were already in the source, so there was little I could do about it except going through it manually. I mainly offered to help them out to turn the huge excel sheet into these templated tables, so that people could edit them and improve on that. Quite some work has been done in that field, but clearly not enough! Also I'm afraid most of the cut-off sentences were already like that in the source. I'm afraid I can't go through it manually myself (apologies! I would love to...) but I hope that many hands will make it a lighter work. Thanks for all the help so far! effeietsanders 21:40, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help on creating templates

[edit]

Hi Effeietsanders! Could you please help me create a template similar to Template:Philippine cultural property row? I'm planning to use it for other cultural properties which does not merit or currently does not have its own article (like for archaeological national cultural treasures). Here is the format:

Image Site Name
WMPH-ID
Location
(Coordinates)
Description
Rizal Shrine
PH-40-0053
JP Rizal Street, Poblacion
Calamba, Laguna
14°12′49″N 121°10′00″E / 14.213708°N 121.166739°E / 14.213708; 121.166739
Birthplace of Jose Rizal, national hero of the Philippines

Thanks. --Carlojoseph14 (talk) 08:54, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Carlojoseph14, glad to see you're working on cultural heritage!
Setting up the template is not so hard, you can just copy the code and start editing. However, the tricky part is to understand what information should be in there. For example, you use an identifier, but this seems to be the same type of identifier as the identifier for official monuments. I would strongly advise to either use no identifier at all, or make up a new series - to clearly distinct them from the official monuments. Secondly, there should be a clear understanding how you want to use the template, in what kind of page. What kind of information do you expect to have? I don't think you need an upload button in case there is no picture, right? On what wiki do you want to create the pages? effeietsanders 17:30, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response! My proposed table is actually an improvement for the Philippine cultural property row that are currently used on List of National Cultural Treasures in the Philippines. This will allow merging of the Address/Location, Municipality, Province and coordinates to allow more space for the description especially for those that do not have individual articles on Wikipedia. We can remove the identifier. It will be employed on this wiki. --Carlojoseph14 (talk) 13:57, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Historic sites/Nepal

[edit]

First of all a headsup that Wikipedia:WikiProject Historic sites/Nepal to track the whole Nepal fiasco to get it to mainspace. In the meantime a number of Nepali editors seem to help out, but that also means that categories start to go all over the place. That is where I need you:

  • What category is currently needed for tracking purposes?
  • Once a move to mainspace is done
    • How long would it take to get the database updated?
    • Would it be wise to make that move during WLM?
    • Do you have a preferred final category to track the lists?

And anything else you might want to add. Agathoclea (talk) 18:19, 4 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Agathoclea: Thanks for reaching out. I'm glad to hear things are moving forward and the lists are improving. The database uses the templates to track, so the exact category doesn't matter too much for those purposes. It would be nice if it's consistent though. The database is currently not harvesting Nepal, due to it's unclarity with regards to namespace. If I understand the comment on Phabricator:T173726 correctly, it should already be set up to function properly if things are back in mainspace. That assumes that templates etc did not change. It may take a day or two before they are harvested properly.
At this point, I'd say move it as soon as you're ready (but leave redirects because external pages are pointing there). A logical tracking category would be for me something along the lines of Category:Lists of monuments in Nepal. But from my end, I'm not particularly picky. I wouldn't categorize under WLM-specific categories. These lists serve a more general purpose. Hope that makes sense! Thank you for the effort. effeietsanders 18:31, 4 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lists are moving now. One problem that has arisen is that our Nepali editors have changed the IDs of the Monuments - see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Historic sites/Nepal#Merged lists. I had no feedback as to why, I only guess that it has to do with the new districts that where established in Nepal. Anyway we have a discrepancy between the tagged images and the lists now. Agathoclea (talk) 07:32, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Agathoclea: Thanks for the ping, I responded there. I agree that there is some concern with regards to the changing ID's. This should not be a stopper for moving the pages though, but for the wider ecosystem it would be nicer if we stick with the old numbers, or at least record a dual system. effeietsanders 17:35, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ErfgoedBot

[edit]

Since the ownership of ErfgoedBot was passed on, there seems to be no working point of contact for the bot. You seem to be involved somehow, is it ok to pass issues to you, or is there somewhere a central discussion point you could point me to? Agathoclea (talk) 11:30, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Agathoclea: Thanks for reaching out. The management of Erfgoedbot has been taken over by JeanFred. The best place to report issues is on Phabricator, where you can tag it with Wiki-Loves-Monuments-Database, https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/wiki-loves-monuments-database/ .
@JeanFred: can you help respond? :) Correct me or provide more detail, as yyou wish. effeietsanders 11:48, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Now I have to just work out how to post something on Phabricator. Agathoclea (talk) 12:05, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Phabricator is the main bugtracker for Wikimedia technical issues. Always helpful to know how that works :) You can find a manual here and (after logging in) you can create a task here. You can even subscribe JeanFred already to your task when you create it (pro-tip ;) ). Hope that helps! effeietsanders 12:10, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know if there is a "notes" field in the database that could be fed from the lists? I am thinking in particular where sofar people have left html notes in the lists regarding access or that they could not find the object at the location or obvious errors in the official documentation. Something that could later be filtered into a botgenerated worklist. Agathoclea (talk) 09:44, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Agathoclea: I doubt so, but you could check yourself to be sure (documentation is public). However, it would sound like a bad practice to me. html notes are a bad way to define information. It would work better to define a new parameter, include that in the template and file a phabricator ticket to include that in the database. effeietsanders 16:21, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly my point. So I take it, nothing in that direction has been done so far. Agathoclea (talk) 20:39, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It may very well exist in one or a few countries. @JeanFred: do you know of an example? effeietsanders 22:57, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Coronavirus pandemic in Indiana map

[edit]

Thank you so much for adding the COVID19 case map of Indiana, I really appreciate it! There is a slight error with the tilt of the state. It is leaning to the left a few degrees, which may be how it would appear on a larger map of the US due to projection issues, but just looking at any Indiana map, and you can see the side borders (which run due North/South) are depicted as straight up and down. Would it be possible to fix this easily? Cerebral726 (talk) 13:06, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Chiming in to agree with Cerbral726, thanks for adding the map! I've been considering adding something similar, but haven't found the time.
The tilt made me do a double-take as well. If it can be adjusted easily, I think that would reduce confusion.
I noticed that you also changed the infobox back to pandemic from outbreak. Is there a reason? I thought I had checked and found that {{Infobox pandemic}} is just a redirect to {{Infobox outbreak}}.
Also, can you add a citation for that map? We've been trying to keep up with citations for data on that page because so many people are interested in looking at the data in various ways and questions come up.
Thanks, again! 3Todd (talk) 13:52, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure how to fix any tilting issues - they indeed stem from the extraction of the state level maps from the US map. That is also why the sizes look a bit off if you look at the preview on Commons. If someone has a hint how to fix it for all states at once, I'll pick it with the next run later this week.
As for the sources: the file description on Commons has all necessary information. Please feel free to adjust the template with the legend accordingly (I'm not entirely sure what would be the appropriate way to describe it in this specific instance). effeietsanders 15:34, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PS: as for the pandemic/outbreak template: I didn't check thoroughly but tried to keep consistent template use across states that I looked at. As far as I could see all used pandemic, so I assumed that this was the 'correct' one. I was assuming (wrongly, apparently) that outbreak referred to the phase before it was recognized as a pandemic, and that someone just forgot to update it. effeietsanders 04:58, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Cerebral726 and 3Todd: With the gracious help of a friend, we managed to re-create the maps from TIGER, now with a different projection. Please check and let me know how this works for you. effeietsanders 06:28, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
While it does not have the tilt any longer, it is now severely squashed in the North-South direction. For reference, here is a map of Indiana showing the correct dimensions. I appreciate your continued work! Cerebral726 (talk) 12:53, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think the squish is less distracting than the tilt was. Thanks! I have been meaning to try my hand at some map data visualizations, but haven't made time for it yet. Maybe if it keeps raining where I am all weekend I'll dabble. 3Todd (talk) 14:58, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

COVID-19 in South Carolina map

[edit]

Hi there! I have done a good bit of work on the COVID-19 pandemic in South Carolina article, and noticed that the map you added in the infobox does not match the templated legend (Template:COVID-19 pandemic in the United States prevalence legend) that was added with it, but rather uses a different legend and rationale for shading altogether (pct. of population infected, rather than number of cases). I was wondering if you could perhaps tweak the image file (or show me how to do so, so I could keep up with it in the future and perhaps take some work off of your hands) to agree with the legend currently displaying on the page. Thank you! PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 22:20, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Moments after sending this message I looked at it again and realized that I was reading the legend wrong. Very sorry to bother you, and thank you for all your work! PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 22:23, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

List of heritage sites in Port Elizabeth

[edit]

Hi there, I've run into an odd issue at a page you created quite some time ago. List of heritage sites in Port Elizabeth contains a lot of duplicate text (such as at the entry for Alms houses, Bethelsdorp) and truncated sentences (such as at Fort Frederick). These issues have been there since the page's creation in 2012. I cleaned up some of it, but there are a ton of similar errors remaining... any idea why this would have happened? No hurry. Thank you, Jessicapierce (talk) 04:33, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jessicapierce: It's been a while... I don't know what caused the duplicate text, that's odd. Never noticed before. I suspect two columns were merged that typically contained unique information, but not always. The truncation was a problem with my data source, I believe. This was cleaned up manually in some regions, and not in others, it seems. I just converted the data source at the time because I had done it before. Others involved like user:NJR ZA (I think?) may know more about the data itself. Either way, thanks for your help in cleaning up, it's much appreciated! I'm sorry that I can't be of much help. I am afraid that with all the changes so far, going back to the original source will be actually more painful than going through and fixing it manually. But I can dig up the spreadsheet if you like. effeietsanders 05:07, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, I knew it was a long shot after so much time has passed! Thanks for the reply - I'll probably do a quick cleanup job, just to trim the duplicate text, and not worry about the rest. Cheers, Jessicapierce (talk) 05:14, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This follows a recent RfC here on the English Wikipedia in which nearly all participants agreed that the banner texts the WMF had planned to use were "at least partly untruthful, and that soliciting money by misleading readers is an unethical and inappropriate use of this project."

I can't remember who authored the Dutch banner, but they might be gratified to know their idea lives on. Regards, Andreas JN466 10:48, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the pointer. @Matroos Vos: I think Andreas is referring to you. effeietsanders 14:29, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
