Edit summaries
[edit]Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:
Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)
Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.
Edit summary content is visible in:
Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Infobox selective transclusion at Vichy France
[edit]Your edits here and here at Vichy France broke the parameterized transcludable infobox. This didn't cause any ill effect at the Vichy France article itself, but rather at any article that transcluded it. In particular, the article Government of Vichy France was badly mangled, including the entire "Vichy France" article within it, so it contained double body sections, double See also's, double sets of notes and references applying to both articles on one page, double external links, and so on. In a word: a big mess. The fix to Government of Vichy France was to remove your two edits from Vichy France.
What were you trying to achieve with those two edits? If there was a valid goal, maybe it could be achieved some other way, without breaking selective transclusion. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below, using {{reply}}, or add a new section to my Talk page. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 23:39, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
Have you edited before?
[edit]Hello again. Have you edited before under another name? Your editing pattern shows deep familiarity with Wikipedia.
As a new account, you have been making some sophisticated edits to article infoboxes, such as adding {{Infobox former subdivision}} to numerous articles. Additionally, as noted in the section above this one, you successfully modified code at Vichy France which employed inclusion control modifiers and conditional parser functions to carry out selective transclusion, while keeping all the metacharacters balanced and the source page in working order. (It happened to break something elsewhere, but the point is that that is a very sophisticated edit showing great familiarity with some advanced features of Wikipedia.)
Can you disclose what other account(s) you may have used before this? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 00:02, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for November 24
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Duchy of Brunswick, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Goldmark. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 05:59, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}

Notice
[edit]This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.
You have shown interest in Eastern Europe or the Balkans. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.
To opt out of receiving messages like this one, place {{Ds/aware}}
on your user talk page and specify in the template the topic areas that you would like to opt out of alerts about. For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Introduction to contentious topics
[edit]You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Additionally you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
Unreliable sources, and claims not supported by sources, in contentious topic area
[edit]At Timeline of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war you added an event sourced to a youtube short by CGTN. CGTN is considered a deprecated source at WP:RSP due to it publishing false or fabricated information. More problematically, the content you added was not supported by the source; it did not support the claim that a "a pregnant woman and her unborn baby" was killed.
Please be careful to use reliable sources and only add claims that are supported by those reliable source, particularly in contentious topic areas like the Arab-Israeli conflict. BilledMammal (talk) 09:38, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- Looking through some of your other edits, I would also recommend being cautious about the following sources:
- Middle East Eye - while not listed at RSP, discussions at RSN have seen it negatively.
- Red Stream Net - you used them here, but they appear to be a self-published source and thus are not suitable.
- Primary sources - some of the videos you present include no analysis but instead just a headline and a video of the events, such as this edit and this edit. In general, in a contentious topic area like this, it is best to rely on secondary sources as it helps us identify what is and isn't WP:DUE. The second one is particularly problematic as the words you added aren't fully supported by the sources.
- In general, I would suggest avoiding youtube shorts as a source, and instead finding written sources.
- I'm also seeing a little edit warring and a few WP:1RR violations at topics like Al-Ahli Arab Hospital explosion. Please keep in mind breaches of this are taken seriously, and can result in blocks or bans from uninvolved administrators - for the purposes of our policies our definition of revert is
any edit (or administrative action) that reverses or undoes the actions of other editors, in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material, and whether performed using undo, rollback, or done so completely manually. A series of consecutively saved reverting edits by one user, with no intervening edits by another user, counts as one revert.
BilledMammal (talk) 09:58, 21 October 2023 (UTC)- the whole "a pregnant woman and her unborn baby" claim i found in another source but i either forgot to add it or someone removed it. and i don't remember participating in edit wars or reverting edits in pages like Al-Ahli Arab Hospital explosion. whatever it is it's probably unintentional. also where can i find discussions about Middle East Eye? Durranistan (talk) 12:40, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- WP:RSN; if you search the archives you will find some. BilledMammal (talk) 17:34, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

- I found this conversation when looking for editors who made contributions to the page I am currently working on. According to other discussions on pages related to the war Middle East Eye is generally factual (albeit somewhat prone to cherry-picking and spin). Irtapil (talk) 14:13, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- Billed Mammal (you've told me not to tag you because you subscribe to stuff already), can you please you link the depreciation discussion of CGTN on my talk page? I am aware of their reputation, but I listen to CGTN Radio (English service) fairly frequently, and I think the bad rep is at least partly undeserved. They don't tell the whole truth, but what they do say is usually true, it has been every time I've taken the time to check. But I'm keen to know if I've missed any examples of fabrication? Irtapil (talk) 14:17, 19 January 2024 (UTC).
Citing websites that don't exist
[edit]Hi Durranistan. I notice you've been adding a lot of content recently with citations to http://dev-isw.bivings.com. This website does not appear to exist, and bivings doesn't seem to have anything to do with ISW. I don't know how exactly you got that URL, or if using it at all was some kind of mistake, but every use needs to be fixed. If you were intending to cite ISW's daily reports, it's no good to cite their main page (and certainly not someone else's mirror), as the content changes daily. You need to find a static URL for the update for that day, or at least provide enough of a title and other information to unambiguously identify the source. As it is now, it's entirely unclear what you're even intending to cite. Someguy1221 (talk) 03:11, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- To clarify something I just figured out, that URL can be found in the metadata of ISW's website, probably a leftover from the website's development phase, and may have gotten pulled out by a citation tool, assuming you are using one. But the rest of my first comment still stands. That line of metadata exists in the source code of every ISW daily report, so if you have a tool that is grabbing the wrong URL, you'll need to copy-paste the correct one manually. Someguy1221 (talk) 03:26, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- thanks for the notice, hopefully i fixed it Durranistan (talk) 04:31, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
Break tag changes undone
[edit]Please do not change properly terminated, self-closing Html tags such as <br />
by changing them to the unterminated <br>
. This breaks syntax highlighting for everything on the page after it. I've undone a dozen edits of yours from 15 November which modified working pages and broke them with this type of change. Sorry for all the notifications you must have gotten about these reverts, but please don't do any more of these. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 11:53, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello
[edit]Hi, I saw my edits of moving the images were changed, is there a reason for this? I just move the image to the related conflict? Can't think of an issue with this? It took me quite a while of my time making those changes and would be nice if my changed can be included back Danial Bass (talk) 12:00, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Also just to let you know, this is my second time doing that change, since I had an edit conflct with you, so instead of reverting your changes, I re-did mine manually again without disrupting your edits. It would be nice if you can do back that favor to me Danial Bass (talk) 12:05, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

- Yeah sorry I wasnt clear, what you said is what I mean. Can you please manually re-do your edit. When there is an edit conflict there will usually be a pop-up button where u can manually redo it. Not sure if you didn't see it? When I saw the "edit conflict" pop-up I chose to manually redo my edits instead of just copy and paste my edit, thus undoing your recent edits (this is what I mean by "revert" bcos it essentially reverts the edits (not referring to the undo button) Danial Bass (talk) 12:45, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

Copyright problem: List of journalists killed in the Israel–Hamas war
[edit]Hello Durranistan! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as List of journalists killed in the Israel–Hamas war, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted material from other websites or printed works. This article appears to contain work copied from https://cpj.org/2024/05/journalist-casualties-in-the-israel-gaza-conflict/, and therefore to constitute a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policies. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted. While we appreciate your contributions, copying content from other websites is unlawful and against Wikipedia's copyright policy. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators are likely to lose their editing privileges.

Use of the word illegal
[edit]Regarding this edit: please note that there is no such thing as illegal people. The settlements may be considered illegal, but not the people living there. The people living there may be living there illegally, but they are not illegal people. Therefore, you cannot use the words "illegal Israel settlers". The Mountain of Eden (talk) 19:38, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- the settlements are illegal under international law so the settlers are also illegal by proxy, like how immigrants that illegally entered a country is called an illegal immigrant Durranistan (talk) 03:25, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
- People can commit illegal acts, but there is no such thing as illegal people. The Mountain of Eden (talk) 03:43, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
- Just because people say "illegal immigrants" instead of "people who immigrated illegally" does not make it proper. The Mountain of Eden (talk) 03:48, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

Hey Durranistan! I came across your profile and noticed you were interested in military history. I've been working on a big project over the last few weeks: Attacks on the United States. The aim is to have a list of every time the U.S. (government/military) was attacked, but not when the U.S. was attacking. My hope is to create attacks by the United States once this list is fully finished.
Well anyway, I wanted to see if you would be interested in helping me put together some of the summaries for the list. I am fairly sure most if not all of the attacks themselves are on the list. But, I'm still working to get the summaries and references put together for each of them. If you are interested or have any questions, feel free to message me back here or on my talk page anytime! If not, I completely understand. Keep up the good work on Wikipedia! Cheers! The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 15:25, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
