Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

Architectural timeline

Hi Cyber! I see you are last editing timeline of architecture. Just wanted to tell you that it has serious problems and mistakes, along with huge gaps (styles missing) I would edit it myself but I dont know how to edit timelines I wrote about some problems on talk page. Please fix it or send someone with knowledge of architecture to correct it, 20th century sticks out as biggest problem. Cheers! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.243.31.234 (talk) 20:32, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

It was your bot Cyberbot II I dont understand how that works cause I am noob when it comes to Wikipedia but pls notify some editor, it is article of Top importance and somehow, someway its B class article which is baffling with so many mistakes.(assume it got rank before it was merged with very, very bad 20th century timeline)

Just to expand, its actually stuck on job 2677 at page number 2849. List of World War I memorials and cemeteries in Champagne-Ardennes where it has been for a few days. Automatic bot operation (A - Z) seems to be working fine. I may also add that before it stopped working it was only running 1 bot job after another instead of 5 at once, not sure if intended or related to this. Redalert2fan (talk) 15:05, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
Confirm user-submitted bot jobs not running (FARotBot didn't run due to previous queue). -- GreenC 15:12, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

Please Help

Hello Cyberpower678, since you are a Wikipedia administrator, can you please remove the warning a bot put on my talk page? I do not use any special software or editing tools. All my contributions are painstakingly manual edits. In addition, I get frequent electricity and Internet outages in the part of the world I'm in right now. These outages are usually between 10 to 60 minutes long. This makes manual editing even more difficult and slow. So I didn't realise when I removed an AfD template by mistake when trying to fix the Labbayk page. Despite all these obstacles, I still try my best and contribute. Wikipedia user Icewhiz put a "Single Purpose Account" tag next to my contributions in Labbayk deletion discussion page (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Labbayk_(2nd_nomination). Can you please remove that tag too? Since I'm relatively new here, I feel aggrieved and wronged. Please help. Liberty Pedia (talk) 12:46, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

Cyberbot I needs a newline if first AfD log transclusion?

Mentioned at WT:TW, see example from 19 October. It seems like if Cyberbot I lists the first entry on a given day's AFD log, it doesn't include the newline after the comment in the log, and Twinkle looks for that newline. I think this is line 524 of afdbot.php but I could be wrong. ~ Amory (utc) 11:05, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Appointed as reserve Commissioner for ACE2018

Hey Cyberpower! Just letting you know that you have been appointed by the community as a reserve Commissioner for WP:ACE2018. While you did not finish in the top three, it was only by a slim margin, and you should be proud of the substantial and unanimous support you received. As a reserve Commissioner, you will be the one who is called up to replace or stand in for any of the Commissioners, should one of them resign or otherwise become unable to serve. Until then, you're more than welcome to help run the election and assist with any tasks that need doing, but you are under no obligation to do so (though, you should probably follow along in case you're needed). The coordination pages for this election can be found at WP:COORD18 and WT:COORD18. Congrats!  Swarm  talk  02:31, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

Indeed - I didn't vote for you, although I think you are absolutely fine for the role, but with 4 serious candidates for 3 places, I determined to only cast 3 votes whatever. I'm sure many thought the same. Johnbod (talk) 03:40, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

Improper sentence in InternetArchiveBot userpage.

Hello! On the userpage of InternetArchiveBot on Meta-Wiki, which is displayed on a lot of other Wikis, there is a sentence that's got two issues. I tried fixing it, but I wasn't allowed to edit someone else's userpage (which is understandable, but unexpected). Here's the sentence in question: Different options, such as controlling which sources to touch, which pages to scan, and whether or not scan live links and act on that information. There's no main verb, and 'to' misses at 'whether or not to scan'. I think it would be nice if you could fix this. :) 607 (talk) 07:05, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – November 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (October 2018).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
  • A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
  • The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.

Arbitration

  • Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
  • The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

Apparent anomaly with Cyberbot I AfD update

That

Wikiplus seems to be behaving weirdly, (as to edit conflicts) and I had already phrased my second question, I was not bothered enough as to the restoration of your comment. If you feel that it can't even stay at the page, feel free to exercise your discretion. At any case, I derive satisfaction from your thoughts that the first statement was too vague to be understood and replied by Fred.WBGconverse 19:54, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

And, FWIW, I knew for the first time that someone can knowingly edit conflict with another editor :-) That Fred had already mentioned his response (which I fairly expected), I was framing my second one and the last time, I checked, I did not have an access to your thoughts either..../WBGconverse 19:58, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Winged Blades of Godric, It's not about the "statement" being vague. It's about the "question" being a statement. You made remarks on Fred's vagueness and simply threw out "Any comments?" Which reads to me as an "attack", for lack of a better word, rather than an honest question. I'm only asking you to rephrase it to be an actual question, like "Can you please explain why your answers above are so short and vague?", or something along that lines. Otherwise, I feel it has no place in the questions page. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 19:58, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Apologies, that it came off as an attack.
It was like:-- Please comment as to the broader locus of my preceding statement (which was very-evidently about how his poor communication skills was not conducive to being an arbitrator).
Cheers! WBGconverse 20:13, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Cyberpower678. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Yup. I have 2 that are pending. ZackBot 11 & ZackBot 13. If you have some time. :-) --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:26, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

User:Cyberbot I/Current AfD's

The table hasn't been updated in many days and was intermittent before that. Not urgent, but is there an issue or an alternative page I should use? StrayBolt (talk) 00:36, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks!?! Running again for at least 2 cycles, assuming you fixed it. StrayBolt (talk) 03:26, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Please expand

Hello Cyberpower678, regarding Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Proposing_a_temporary_measure_to_assist_in_protecting_the_Main_Page I see you closed this, but without any commentary. Is this mean a new protection level needs to added, for int-admins protections - and that everyone who needs to touch every template related to main page will need to become intadmins? — xaosflux Talk 03:28, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Xaosflux, I just finished expanding. :-) —CYBERPOWER (Around) 03:29, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, I've requested a closure review at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Post_closure, as I think your closure is premature due to active discussions that have been shut down without reference in your closing. — xaosflux Talk 03:38, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Regarding 2FA, I'm also a strong supporter of this - I've been talking to the WMF team about the enforcement, they are doing a write up on it for publication and are also determining if adding software enforcement is a good idea right now (phab:T150562). I've also requested an ability to audit 2FA activation for accounts (phab:T209749). Good night! — xaosflux Talk 03:53, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Book report again

Hi Cyberpower, can you please check and see is the bot again skipping book reports or has the schedule for running book reports changed? Please don't archive it as if there's a problem we can try to solve it. Also pinging @Headbomb:. —IB [ Poke ] 10:16, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Adminstats

Hi, why isn't my adminstats updating? I've got {{adminstats|USERNAME}} on this page but it still won't update. The doc says it can be on a subpage, but is this not correct? Anarchyte (talk | work) 13:42, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks!

I couldn't thank Cyberbot for updating my page because the option isn't there, so I thank you here! – Athaenara 15:15, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Continued page blanking by Cyberbot II

Hello Cyberpower, just letting you know that Cyberbot II is once again blanking pending changes protected pages. See this diff. Jalen D. Folf (talk) 22:23, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Sorry to pile on, but is Cyberbot II the World's Biggest Liar? Looking at the page history I see that the bot has made 9 of the last 50 edits, and sometimes it seems to be edit warring with itself. That page has been continuously pending-changes protected with no expiration date set, since July 2013. The bot making so many edits to the page kind of defeats the purpose of protecting it. This was reported earlier this month. Please make tracking down the cause a priority. This has been an ongoing problem on that page for the past three years+ Thanks, wbm1058 (talk) 22:13, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Cascading protection of Template:ACEWatchlistNotice

I've removed the cascading protection from Template:ACEWatchlistNotice after increasing the protection level of any transcluded templates. Per WP:PTPROT, cascading protection on templates generally doesn't do what you would expect since it protects things included in <noinclude>...</noinclude> but doesn't protect things inside <includeonly>...</includeonly>. English Heritage website changed the URL syntax for accessing its site database

I signed up for using the IABot Management Interface and looked at both functions it offers, and also looked at the FAQ but I didn't see anywhere it addressed this. Example:

So what needs to be done is change

  • list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid= to:
  • historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/

The database ID # 1008093 stays the same, There are a lot more where that came from, with just different ID numbers.

The bot tried and failed to fix so many of them on Scheduled monuments in Mendip that it populated Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded and triggered an {{error}} – I found this on my routine {{error}} patrol. I can fix this manually, but as this isn't the first time I've seen such a site-breaking URL change, I thought I'd better tell you about it. – wbm1058 (talk) 22:37, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

I am slowly converting these over to use {{NHLE}} to future proof them. Keith D (talk) 23:36, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
@Keith D: Thanks. See this diff where I just fixed one list item. The additional template transclusion overhead increased the no. of transcluded bytes, which will go beyond the limit if everything else is fixed the same way... leaving two less desirable options. (1) Just fix the hardcoded URLs and don't use that template (2) split the list somehow. Or a better but harder option if you're not a Lua coder (3) rewite the template code as a Lua module. – wbm1058 (talk) 01:29, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
@Wbm1058: The template was made worse for traslusion limit especially when used on large lists when someone switched it to use a wrapper template. I think that the wrapper template should probably be removed. Keith D (talk) 11:57, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

FWIW it's usually not a good idea to use external link templates vs. CS1|2 for citations. It might help the immediate problem of URL moves, but it creates other more serious problems. For example there is no URL in the wikisource to trigger an automated save at Wayback, the link may never get saved to Wayback. And most tools that manage citations can't handle specialize templates like {{NHLE}} so any maintenance is skipped. For example, IABot, WaybackMedic, Citation bot, etc.. The problem of URL moves can easily be solved with bots, my bot for example can fix those (example). WP:BOTREQ. -- GreenC 03:57, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Unable to report false positives for InternetArchiveBot

Hello! Firstly, I would like to thank you for the wonderful contributions you have made to Wikipedia! The InternetArchiveBot is amazing. I was trying to use the tool to report false positives, but when I click submit, the next page tells me to review the URLs to make sure they are not dead but the submit button isn't allowing me to click it — there is a prohibition sign. The two URLs I am trying to report as false positives are here and here. Thank you! –Daybeers (talk) 22:49, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.
