Do you have to know how to code to use Wikipedia?

I was minding my own business sucking up knowledge when I noticed something that seemed odd to me. All I wanted to do was ask why bull vaulting was now being referred to as bull leaping in all references, including the Minoan Fresco where the whole puzzling idea originated. However, you can't ask this on the talk page...because it is part of some Classical Greek conglomerate of I-don't-know-what. I am not authorized even to ask the big wig humanities authorities there my question. At this point it seems Sisyphean to figure it all out. But I really want to know. Actually, Cullen even following your link, I can not pass on my concerns about the accuracy of the terminology to relevant parties because I am not an established editor. ( it is a protected page) I have no desire to edit anything, I only signed up to pass on my concern of possible errors to the people who monitor the pages. Thank you anyway. Your page has the semblance of a user interface. I found others confusing and restricted to me. I cannot edit those pages, even were I to desire to, nor can I edit on the talk pages. I do not see that the Reference desk/Humanities is under protection at this time. Sometimes, a page is semi-protected (or even fully protected) due to persistent vandalism or disruptive trolling. Unsurprisingly, anonymous people sometimes misbehave on the internet. Any account which is over four days old and has ten or more productive edits can edit semi-protective pages. Until then, you can ask your question on the talk page.

I have been pondering on how to reply to your input at 7:09 pm, 13 December 2015. (I do not know how to link well). It is so easy to be misunderstood if one does not write clearly and fully, so sorry I was not clear. I was not questioning your integrity or the way you take articles in order, as it is obvous that what you say about expertise is true. You are also one of the Teahouse hosts I respect most. Not all Teahost host replies are as balanced as yours.

Hello, SovalValtos. I share your concerns about the GACUP and have never participated. I have observed from afar a couple of cases where intense competitiveness led to some very bad behavior. Personally, I am more interested in writing good, informative articles than "Certified Good Articles!", if you know what I mean. Although the acting roles are not notable in themselves, they are verifiable and standard biographical details. While IMDb is not an entirely reliable source, it is used to reference acting credits in countless articles. I feel that the "22 Nov 2015" revision represents the most accurate and neutral portrait of Comisar. Please reinstated. More on Comisar article situation

Hello again. I did not know about any threats but I did some research. Comisar is in prison with no access to email or the Internet (including Wikipedia). It is highly unlikely he had anything to do with any threats, nor did his agents, managers, or lawyers, who are all very well established and reputable people. The alleged threats were all hot air. My private investigator friend found out that "TonySpraks" is an 87 year old handicapped man. There is absolutely no legitimacy to any of his threats and they should not be taken seriously. There is a nothing to worry about. When contacted by the PI he profusely apologized and promised never to visit the Wikipedia site again. I did not know anything about this before I suggested the changes to the article. I just saw an injustice to the article and I suggested a reinstatement to a previous revision.PediatricMD (talk) 03:26, 19 December 2015 (UTC)

Hello Cullen. I'm presuming you're up for an RfA soon, and like many other Wikipedians I too am open for my own RfA. Obviously you're an experienced editor and I wanted an opinion from one. When do you think I'll be ready for an RfA, and which sections of Wikipedia should I increase focus on? I am already focused on clearing the G13 category, counter-vandalism/AIV and CSD tagging. In your case, I think your edit count of 3667 is light for most RfA voters, and I notice that you have not yet created any articles. Excellent content creation is highly valued at RfA. I recommend that you do some work at AfD as well as CSD. AfD deals more with nuanced, borderline cases, and will give you experience with saving articles as well as deleting them. Frankly, I don't see what writing skill has to do with being a good administrator, but my opinion does not reflect the community's position. Cullen, on the other hand, will be an excellent admin. However, even he will face some stiff opposition for not being enough of a content creator. Some demand at least one GA. Please save yourself some grief, CatcherStorm, and hold off for a while (like a year), and focus on writing during that time. And you got two! I am sorry if I came off as mean. I'm always pretty straightforward. You have the dedication. I've seen RfA reduce guys that have been here 3 times as long as I've been to quivering masses of goo. At best, it is tough. At worse, it is utterly demoralizing. My advice was meant quite seriously. Write. Lots. Try to get an existing article to GA. Even though the stuff you mention is what admins do, it isn't what the masses want to see. Screwed up system, but it's the one we have. Changing the World--There is no "One SIze Fits All"!

Jim, Thank you for such a kind invite to the TeaHouse. I read your profile and was blown-away. I just went thru a mid-life crisis (52-yr old single, no kids) and came out the other side a changed man. Rather than having a job as my identity--I have transitioned to a "role of significance".

It fits and feels good. Things have been popping into my head at an alarming rate. I get up in the middle of the night and document them as best as I can. The Project Management wiki article is just one small example. I hope it can make "The Big Stage" someday. I am an Electrical Engineer at NASA and have been building rockets at Kennedy Space Center for over 20-years...but I am NOT a classical Engineer Type. Gone to BurningMan 3-times and camp with the Alternate Energy Zone.

-Some thoughts as examples: STEM vs. STEAM. Why are the Arts not $$ paid for? partial Answer---No metrics developed & proven to show return on investment (ROI). Classic Project Management will tell you --if you can't measure it, you can't manage it.

Can Established Free Governments benefit from Project Managed Change Management/Re-Engineering? Partial Answer---Yes. NASA has an open-source Systems Engineering Handbook ( NASA/SP-2007-6105) that can be utilized to assure success for agreed-upon Citizen-Centric changes.

What are the Sacred Roles of Government?-- A: Three. 1.) Provide Leadership for an Optimistic Future, 2.) Help the Powerless, 3.) Sentinel of Sustainability.

How to Secure World Peace?--- Partial A: It can be Project Managed as a "Complex Project". The Project Manager(s) who sign-up also have to realize that they will not see the final product. They will need to be self-motivated. Global Metrics would need to be established. One metric for consideration/development: rating establishments to provide the world populace (via internet webpage) of current establishments "World Peace Quotient".

Teahouse conversation extended- Pat Larter page

Hello, Thanks for your reply on my question in the teahouse-I am a rookie at Wikipedia so can't work out how to reply there (is that possible!?)

I am still trying to work out what exactly is wrong with my references for my page on Pat Larter? I have a book, an exhibition catalogue, and online journal, and a newspaper article included in the reference list-which are reputable independent published sources (so far as I am aware In the art word in Australia they certainly are!) I have quoted from these sources in the article with quotation marks.

Also out of curiosity who decides if sources are reputable? and how many sources does an article need to have?

I see what you mean about the length of the article- it is important I think that people can see the exhibition she was in so they can research further- is there a way to do this by attaching the information as a pdf or something?

Hello, Daniellehakim. I will give you a frank answer based not only on policies and guidelines, but also on my impressions and hunches based on long experience here, including work on quite a few artist biographies. First, every edit you make should be devoted to demonstrating that she meets our notability guideline WP:ARTIST, based on what the reliable sources say. There is no "magic number" of sources, but I will say without hesitation that three high quality sources are superior to ten mediocre sources. One book source from a university press devoting five pages of significant coverage to an artist is superior to twenty trivial passing mentions in a variety of local newspapers. When writing a new article, a short, tightly focused and well referenced biography is far superior to a sprawling disorganized curriculum vitae crammed full of unreferenced assertions.

When I look at your entirely unreferenced Exhibitions section, I see "Watters . . . Legge . . . Watters . . . Legge . . . Legge". Of what significance or use is it to the reader of the encyclopedia that her work was exhibited in those galleries so many times, when there is no critical commentary and no references to reliable sources? And then I notice that the most impressive exhibitions are in her husband's name, as is the book source.

Similarly for the Publications section. Presumably, these publications mention her. But if they are not being used as references to support assertions in the article, they simply do not belong in the article. They contribute nothing except bloat.

The Collections section could contribute to notability big time. But it is unreferenced, provoking skepticism from a reviewer and bewilderment from the reader.

I recommend that you start by ruthlessly eliminating every single unreferenced phrase, sentence or list item from your draft. Leave only material that accurately summarizes what your cited reliable sources say. If you want to add anything back in, then add a reference that backs it up. The result will be a lean, well referenced encyclopedia article.

You might want to take a look at biography of a photographer I wrote, Cedric Wright. I think that you will see that the references support every assertion about him in the article. Hello, Thanks again for taking the time to respond and for the explanation. Yes the problem for most of her career is that her exhibitions were often asides to her husbands work- and she has not had a monograph published on her own artwork (that I am aware of) or many solo institutional exhibitions dedicated to her work. This does not mean she is not notable but is reflective of a general trend in the art world to highlight works by male artists. See Guerrilla Girls or CoUNTess also the reason I am writing articles in the first place- to write women into art history.

I do understand what you mean about making the article shorter and adding more references but is it not also helpful for researchers to see her exhibition history? Books do often publish artists CVs I know that at the moment my article is unreferenced where it could be but isn't the point of wikipedia that it can be improved by other users so if someone were to see my article they could help complete links add more information?

I have since improved my article. Wikipedia itself says in the introduction that "Wikipedia is allowed to be imperfect". I still don't see the reason why it should not be published as it was? As it were published someone else might see it and want to improve it! I did add some more references however links to collections/articles are tricky as not all are online...and I don't have access to some books which I need to go to libraries to borrow.

Hopefully now it is now able to be published.

Hello again, Daniellehakim. I took a look at some of the higher numbered references that I did not recognize, and they are of high quality and establish notability in my opinion. I still find the lengthy unreferenced lists to be disconcerting and unencyclopedic. You comment "is it not also helpful for researchers to see her exhibition history?". Maybe that would be appropriate for a monograph where original research is not only allowed but encouraged. Here on Wikipedia, we simply do not publish original research. So, I again advise you to either reference this material or remove it. You can expand the article at any time in the future by summarizing any new reliable sources that you discover. Wikipedia is not a substitute for books or monographs. It is a tertiary reference work which summarizes what published secondary sources says. You are correct that we do not expect perfection, but you have chosen to use the Articles for Creation process, and so you need to convince an AfC reviewer that your draft article is ready for the encyclopedia. I have been told conflicting things by various editors and through rulings and arbitration at Wikipedia. I have been specifically told to make editing suggestions at the Talk page of my bio, but that I cannot edit the bio myself. I have been repeatedly asked by Wikipedia editors to offer edits so they can see how I think a sentence, paragraph or section should read. This is what I have been told and I have also followed the advice of editors who told me learn Wikipedia policy to inform my edit requests and comments. Historically, you should know that I requested that my bio be deleted. This was rejected as was another deletion request by an editor just recently. You should also know that an editor of my bio named Jossi was banned from Wikipedia when it was established that he was employed by Prem Rewat, a guru known as cult leader. As you may know several Scientologists have also been banned from editing at Wikipedia. So there has been a historical problem with my bio being abused by sock puppets. Having said that my intent is to work within the parameters of Wikipedia policy as instructed. I have no intention of becoming the editor of my own bio, which is explicitly prohibited. To paraphrase Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies); "If the depth of coverage is not substantial, then multiple[2] independent sources should be cited to establish notability." "The source's audience must also be considered. Evidence of significant coverage by international or national, or at least regional, media is a strong indication of notability."
