POTD/2017-06-23

Posting this here because it's almost 2017-06-23 now.

The caption currently describes the animal as wild, but it is visibly wearing some sort of metal object on a collar. Is it wild? Maybe it is and the object is a tracking device used by researchers; I would't've guessed they'd be that big, though. The image page says it was photographed on the banks of the Rio Negro, but does not address these points. --76.71.5.114 (talk) 18:16, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

  • dudes, you needta gotta provide links so that us talk page stalkers can see exactly what metal object y'all are talkin' about! Links!!! (not that I couldn't eventually find it myself, just that I don't have the energy this evening, and not like it matters, really, just I like me some links in situations like this cause if there had been one and it was easy, I would have looked). It wasn't an easy climb... PotD request

Well, the limpet finally got where I was aiming it so long ago— thank you, Chris, for your early support of the image. Sometimes when I nominate my things for FP consideration, it seems like you are the first person to see it as it is and offer your support. That means a lot to me. I'd have thrown in the towel quite awhile ago if it wasn't for there being someone there to say, "Yes, that one, actually, is good," even if it needs revisions and modifications to truly "qualify" at the end of it all. Which brings me to my point: I haven't had a PotD in a very long time now... Could we get Mr. Limpet on the list for that now that he is an FP? Please let me know. Have no preference for dates, just whenever he can be put on the list. Would be very much appreciated! Thank you again!!!! KDS4444 (talk) 23:51, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

Morgan House, Kalimpong

Hello, Chris - I hope you are doing well. I am in the middle of copy-editing West Bengal. In the course of reading and copy-editing the article, I've skimmed a couple of articles that are linked in that article, and probably a few others linked from those articles. One is Morgan House, Kalimpong. I was trying to reformat the gallery so that:

  • all the landscape-oriented photos would be on one line
  • all the portrait-oriented photos would be on another line
  • there would be no gray areas around each photo
  • the captions are left-aligned

I found the gallery mode packed formatting and code to make the captions left aligned at Help:Gallery tag, and I just copied and pasted it, once for the horizontal images and separately for the vertical images, just changing the px's a little. In preview, all five of the horizontal images were the same size and all fit on one line. Then, after I saved my edits, some of those images ended up much larger than the others, so it looks odd now. Can you help me fix it so it looks right? Thanks.  – Corinne (talk) 04:06, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, Chris.  – Corinne (talk) 02:10, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

John F. Francis

I made a few copy-edits to the article on John F. Francis. I noticed a "citation needed" tag in the article. Wouldn't it be good to find a source so the tag can be removed before the painting goes onto the main page as Picture of the Day?  – Corinne (talk) 02:31, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

POTD 2017-08-15 Embroidery

Hi, Chris. I was just looking at this in the queue, and it seems to me the wording needs to be tweaked to a greater extent than I like to do unilaterally at this point. "a series of embroideries are formed around a central polygon" is really not accurate. The whole piece is a work of embroidery, whose motifs are a set of octagons both filled with and surrounded by stylized representations of animals and plants. What do you think? Awien (talk) 22:53, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

  • Thanks, Awien, I was a little uncertain about this one. How's "Here, the embroidery consists of a series of designs formed around a central polygon, depicting a stylized assortment of plants and animals"? — Chris Woodrich (talk) 00:29, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
Much better. Or maybe "within and around a central polygon"? But the nesting octagons are pretty striking too, though I do understand length is a limitation. Cheers, Awien (talk) 00:39, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
Lovely! Goodnight! Awien (talk) 01:27, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

J. P. Parker

Hello, Chris – I was just making some copy-edits to Shaheed Minar, Kolkata, and I came across the name of the architect who designed it, J. P. Parker. I see that there is no article on him, and I thought, if you ever have nothing to do, you might like to write an article on him. If you read Shaheed Minar, Kolkata#Features, you'll see that the monument has some interesting features. Best regards,  – Corinne (talk) 16:33, 15 August 2017 (UTC)

POTD Queen Elizabeth II Great Court

Hi,  Crisco 1492:. It seems to me, admittedly a former denizen of the British Museum Reading Room, that it's the central feature of the Great Court and should be mentioned in the blurb. If you agree, would you want to make the addition, or shall I? Cheers, Awien (talk) 19:53, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Thanks! That's fine concerning the Reading Room. As for the order, maybe mention the Reading Room, the central feature in the image, before the statues, which we don't see (and which are "displayed" rather than "included")? Picky picky - sorry! Awien (talk) 11:24, 3 September 2017 (UTC)
From photos, it's clear that the new tesselated roof meets the base of the original dome of the reading room itself, above the windows but leaving the dome outside the tesselated roof, open to the open air as it always was. In other words, the new roof covers only the court. Might be hard to find that stated explicitly in a source, though. Awien (talk) 16:59, 3 September 2017 (UTC)
(I'm unfortunately unable to confirm this from original research since the Reading Room was closed for the installation of a show when I last visited the British Museum). Awien (talk) 17:03, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for "a film which is not only lost, but for which very little sourcing is available (and yes, I have a sourced statement that little reference material is available). Si Ronda is a silent film in a similar vein to the film Si Tjonat, although sadly not based on a novel and thus the exact plot isn't certain. Produced by Tan's Film, it was one in a fairly long line of films in the genre, although I've never seen any sources which discuss how well it was received."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:42, 13 September 2017 (UTC)

Multiple issues in Europa Press

Hi Crisco 1492. Some time ago (2011) you marked the page Europa Press like an article without sources. Now I'm contributing in the article and I added some references. Can you check it and eliminate that template? In particular, how can I correct the notabilty of the article? Greetings. Tajotep (talk) 20:07, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Tajotep, notability isn't something you "correct". It's either there or it's not. For Europa Press, you'd need at least one (preferably more) reliable, independent source that deals with the subject in-depth. A contemporary newspaper profile, a chapter (or subchapter) in a biography on Reavey, or something similar. Just saying that something exists is not enough for notability.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 04:26, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

Hey traveler, do you still do pictures sometimes? A recent editor is trying to get their own dog in the article, but as it happens their photo isn't even so bad compared to the other ones--and it's a GA; it really should have really good pictures. Re: September Morn

A lot of the ref links need to be updated. The 2 main Milwaukee newspapers disappeared from Google News Archive more than a year ago. Neither of the big newspaper archiving sites has yet picked either of them up. Things like The Miami News which also left Google, are now online at Newspapers.com. I can re-clip refs like that and add them to the article. Can also remove the links for the Milwaukee newspapers-no idea when or where they might be found online again.

Don't feel bad. I just clipped a Chicago Tribune story last week for an article & now I've gotten notice that it's no longer online due to replacement (which can take a while). ;) We hope (talk) 17:58, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

Suharto edit

Hi, I reverted your change as Suharto himself took the "Mohammad" forename after making the Haj pilgrimage. I would argue that even though it was a political move, it is how he wanted to be called. The "Achmad" before "Sukarno" is something of a mystery, but a pertinent point is that he insisted his name be spelled "Sukarno", not "Soekarno", and the article spells it thusly. I'm sure there is a Wikipedia policy somewhere about how to spell people's names, but it's always a bit of a nightmare finding these things. Regards Davidelit (Talk) 06:24, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi David, I don't mind mentioning it in the lead as a name he's known under (although whether or not it's prominent enough to be in the lead sentence is debatable), but at the very least it should be removed from the top of the infobox. To the best of my knowledge the "Muhammad" addition was never official (the biography on the official Indonesian Presidential Palace website, for example, lists him as simple Soeharto; the authorised biography is likewise limited to Soeharto), nor is it the most widely used name. There's precedent for using the most common name at the top of the infobox as well, including in Bill Clinton.
It does look like the grave uses H. Muhammad Soeharto (haven't found a good image to double check, and I've yet to make the trip myself), but given how the deceased are frequently made "more Muslim" in death than they were in life (George Quinn did an interesting bit on Nike Ardilla and her "veiling" a while back) I wouldn't take that as a reliable source.08:27, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Help with Indonesian Source(s)

Hi Chris,

I'm Saiful. I noticed that you have created a significant amount of articles featuring Indonesian celebrities, films, and their entertainment stuff in general. And you are using Indonesian newspapers and magazines to support them. I'm currently working on revising and revamping Siti Nurhaliza's article and I lack the access to some of the credible sources that I can use to support her article. May I know, do you have or know any access to Reader's Digest Indonesia? I came across an article by them that was shared by her fans on a public forum from the February 2005 edition but I could not use it as it lacks proper credentials. I'm hoping if you have the access or know how can I use the said publication can help me out. Thanks! SyFuelIgniteBurned 04:22, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

          • Not a worry. Sadly, nobody's responded that they have it, yet. I'll give it a couple more days. (RD is only rarely on the market... 2000s magazines are mostly the limited print-run of Playboy Indonesia, maybe a few film magazines like Cinemagz, etc.) — Chris Woodrich (talk) 00:52, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
            • Thank you so much once again. It's okay, I can wait. The whole revamping will take awhile since I only have few hours after work to sit down and work on it. By the look of it the main article will be expanded significantly. :D SyFuelIgniteBurned 16:32, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

Drama dari Krakatau scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Drama dari Krakatau article has been scheduled as today's featured article for April 7, 2018. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 7, 2018, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Hi Crisco 1492, I was wondering if you'd be able to offer some assistance. A new article has recently been created about the proposed North Bali International Airport. I believe the author is connected to one of the companies involved in the project. There are a number of sources in Indonesian in the article and provided by the author on his User Talk:Wmarceny. While I do believe the topic of a new airport in Bali is notable, English language sources point to a rather unclear timeline, some doubt the new airport in the first place (as recent as a few weeks ago). Would you, or someone you know who is fluent in Bahasa Indonesia, be able to help review the sources? It may well be that the very latest developments have not been picked up by English speaking press yet. Many thanks. pseudonym Jake Brockman talk 10:02, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Jake Brockman. Based on what I've seen on the user page, there are better quality sources available. Tribun (in all its iterations) is trash, and I've never even heard of IndonesiaKoran. The Jakarta Post is a solid resource, and has covered the airport proposal extensively. Kompas and Tempo would be good to use as well... they are pretty much the gold standard of national news media (Republika is another national newspaper, quite respected). Overall the current article doesn't look overly promotional. It could use some more editing to highlight the provisional nature of the proposal, but I agree that it's certainly become well covered enough for an article, unless there's a policy / guideline I'm not aware of that states otherwise. If the plan ultimately falls through, it would still be good enough for a redirect to whatever's built.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 10:24, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
great, thanks. I edited somewhat to stick with what has been reported in reputable media. I don't think there's any (reasonably) expected announcement in May and construction start in August. Seems quite a bit like a crystal ball. If this does indeed make its way into reputable sources, it can always be added again. However if the transport ministry says in early March, the new airport is not a priority and the coordinating minister in the same department later gives approval for a feasibility study (apparently), this looks like political disconnect which is never helpful. pseudonym Jake Brockman talk 11:20, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
  • Hello Jake Brockman. The recent data for this airport are stated in the Gatra press, gatra is a very reliable political source in Indonesia, the Indonesian TV also as officially stated that the airport is validated by the ministry of coordination (Luhut), we received in the north a visit of this minister in our kampung, im based in Singaraja (Bali) and I'm a teacher and activist fighting to help the actual governor of Bali to develop solutions to balance the economy between the north of Bali (poor) and the south (very rich) parents of my students are living there with only 10 $ per month and the conditions of health and water and sanitation are bad and very degraded. Everything I added and stated is available in the press (jakarta Post, Bali Post, etc..) or simply in the website of the ministry of coordination (https://m.timesindonesia.co.id/read/171713/20180329/191311/persiapan-imf-dan-world-bank-di-bali-menko-maritim-tinjau-kesiapan-tempat/#) a simple google translate allows to understand the source, thanks for your comment (Crisco) and Jake thanks for your verification. —Preceding undated comment added 14:21, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
    • Hi Leni75: Yes, Gatra is among the more reliable news magazines, especially when it comes to politics. However, it far from supports what you were trying to add.
Furthermore, Jake is concerned that the wording of the article is making it seem like a certain thing, rather than something very tentative that has been limited to discourse and feasibility studies (tulisannya seolah-olah bandaranya sudah pasti dibangun, sementara prosesnya baru sampai tahap wacana). Remember the monorail system planned for Jakarta almost two decades ago: a massive infrastructure plan that was ultimately terminated. This could still happen in North Bali, even if construction does being at some point in the near future, and as such we cannot describe the project as "the new airport on the island of Bali, Indonesia".
Also, if you are an activist in the region, you must make sure that you try and distance yourself from what you are writing. Even though you see this as having the potential to improve local residents' welfare, you need to present information objectively, without either promoting or opposing the planned airport. Phrases like "the first strategic economic engine in Indonesia to be developed as [an] Aerotropolis and Agro-Polis" are not neutral, as they rely primarily on buzzwords used by advertisers and developers to sell their projects to investors. Indeed, most of your most recent addition is written reads like a project proposal. That is not acceptable on Wikipedia, and Jake was right to revert it.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 04:34, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
