Georgeshubladze

Hi Larry, hope all is well. I first want to thank you for deleting that promotional page and tagging the needed pages. I see you warned Georgeshubladze last year about editing with a possible COI. I believe they are a SPA account working with NataliaP8 to promote David Rakviashvili and like companies. NataliaP8 was created on October 19, 2017 and after working solely in their sandbox, created David Rakviashvili. The page was published on October 24, 2017. The next day after its creation, Georgeshubladze was created and their first edit was to Rakviashvili. Is an SPI needed here? HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 19:58, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for getting in touch, HickoryOughtShirt?4. It might just be two people who know each other, both working on the article. An SPI would probably require a bit more evidence - for example a similarity in writing styles or editing habits. Even if you don't start an SPI though, I would suggest putting this on record at WP:COI/N. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:04, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Nova Science Publishers Entry

Hello. I recently joined Wikipedia and did some edits on the Nova Science Publishers page. I had heard about them before and saw the entry had biased POV, punctuation, and structure problems, which I worked on from March 6 to 9.

I tried to make the entry neutral- and nonpartisan-sounding like good encyclopedias do. I did not make any fundamental changes to content. So I am quite confused why you reverted all my edits and claim "COI edits" in the Revision History.

I will post this message to the Nova Science Publishers Talk page, where maybe we can get some help from other Wikipedia editors. -- Stepintoreading (talk) 05:02, 20 March 2019 (UTC) Stepintoreading

I will post a reply on the article talk page. Cordless Larry (talk) 08:00, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Edits to Michael Roth page

Hi Cordless Larry,

Could you explain why you undid my edits to Michael Roth's personal page? While my edits may be unpopular, your dislike of what I put on there is not in itself a reason to remove the edits nor is it cause to flag me for potential vandalism. Please at least let me know what about my edits was factually incorrect, given the new information about Roth that just came out in the news. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SilentButtLovely (talkcontribs) 00:32, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

As explained in the message I left on your talk page, the information you added was unsourced. Please see WP:VERIFY and WP:BLPSOURCES. Cordless Larry (talk) 09:00, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Just wanted to give you a heads-up that I've recreated an article at the above title, given the recent AFD. Not about the same guy - it's about an early 19th-century American folk artist. So it should be fine, but I wanted to let you know regardless. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:00, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

URGENT matter regarding Sami Yusuf Wiki Page

Ref: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Sami_Yusuf

Dear Cordless,

It is patently false to call Mr Yusuf "British-Iranian" as he does not hold Iranian citizenship/dual nationality and, for the purpose of clarification he is ethnically Azeri (not Iranian). He only holds British Citizenship. Here is the link confirming this in a 2018 Q&A session with Mr Yusuf: https://twitter.com/samiyusuf/status/960207745126453248

The following link has been sourced for this false claim surrounding his name: http://www.bbc.com/persian/arts/2015/07/150729_music_sami_yusof_iran_reaction

As it is a language I do not understand I had to get it translated. It is now clear that this article is 100% false. It has apparently been around for 4 years and has only come to our attention now through Wikipedia. We have already started to contact the BBC to get this article removed and will take all necessary actions as this is defamatory.

I would like to make it absolutely clear that Mr Yusuf only has one name, that is ’Sami Yusuf’. I am astonished that Wikipedia would take a very dubious source so seriously. We can send you Mr Yusuf’s passport copy in case the following link is not sufficient: https://twitter.com/samiyusuf/status/960210578043293696

I hope this precedes some random rumors - it would be quite tragic for Wikipedia’s credibility if it was otherwise. Logically, one would assume such claims would need to be backed with hard evidence (such as actual credible documents) and not just a tabloid-style article?

Mr Yusuf is obviously a very famous person and rumors are spread about him. He is probably one of the most scandal-free artists in the world but these inaccuracies regarding his background keep popping up on your platform. This is extremely frustrating for Mr Yusuf as well as for us (his Management) since Wikipedia has become a ‘first stop’ for media outlets and we constantly have to correct and inform them about the falsehoods written on your platform. Needless to say, when it comes to things such as citizenship/nationality and name there is a legal dimension which I hope we do not underestimate.

Just a year ago we emailed Google regarding Mr Yusuf’s nationality (which was visible on the Google Graph as “British-Iranian”). Having provided the necessary information as well as supporting documents Google rectified their mistake. I hope the same courtesy can be extended to us by Wikipedia so that this matter can be resolved once and for all!

In case you need any further clarifications, I would be happy to put you in touch with Mr Yusuf’s lawyer and I am at your disposal for any further help.

We would sincerely appreciate your prompt action.

Best regards,

It's there but no one responding.

I think you can unlock the page and we can remove some CERTAIN words only. then you can lock or protect it? One word is wrong there and need to remove. Is it something you can address?

Based on many sources and articles, he is only British and word Iranian should remove from beginning of the article.

Hi there,

I am new on Wikipedia and I recently received your message on one of the pages I edited. The message said that the content I posted is copyrighted. I appreciate your input but I am confused because the content I posted was kind of a news, nothing copyrighted, neither I copied it off from the internet, I added as a new piece of information, in my own words.

Hello, EvanBrown. The very first line of the content you added was "JS Bank Ltd on Tuesday signed a sale and purchase agreement with HSBC Bank Middle East Limited for the acquisition of HSBC-Pakistan operations", which is copied word-for-word from this news article from 2012. I also find it strange that you state that you wrote the material yourself when exactly the same addition was made by another user in December - or is the Syedfaraz12 account yours? Renee Powell and Commons

Can you give me a hand? A while back, Megalibrarygirl asked a colleague to take a photo of Renee Powell, which they did and asserted it was okay to upload it here. The image was put on Commons as commons:File:Renee powell recent.jpg and then deleted due to a lack of an OTRS ticket. We've tried communicating with the deleting admin at commons:User talk:Jcb#Deletion of Renee Powell image and are basically getting nowhere, but the same "you need to contact OTRS" canned response, which isn't helpful. I don't know how to resolve this, and hopefully as a much more experienced OTRS agent and admin, you do. What exactly should we do next? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:07, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Good to hear from you, Ritchie333. Unfortunately, the one aspect of OTRS that I have no experience of is permissions, and indeed I don't seem to have access to the permissions queue, so I don't think I can help. Have you followed the instructions at Commons:OTRS? Could Megalibrarygirl's colleague e-mail permission? Cordless Larry (talk) 18:22, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
I think that's happened, or rather it's been attempted. However, I get the impression that said colleagues are not computer experts and doing stuff like e-mailing OTRS is just way beyond what they're normally used to, and repeatedly saying "talk to OTRS" isn't specific enough. I'll let Megalibrarygirl outline the specifics, but I think that's basically where we are. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:30, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
Let me ping a few editors who have access to the permissions queue and are active here on the English Wikipedia: Nihonjoe, Moonriddengirl, Sphilbrick, can any of you assist here? Cordless Larry (talk) 18:41, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
Cordless Larry, Permissions is an area I used to work in extensively. I had gotten away from it and want to get back (gulp: the current backlog is over 2700). however, the specific file is deleted. Because of a family situation, I had been a bit inactive over the last few months and my comments admin that expire due to inactivity so I can't help with this one. I do hope to get back to working on permissions but I'm trying to work down the info backlog at the moment. S Philbrick(Talk) 20:17, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Looking for someone to help me finding my way around

Hi Larry,

A link to you was posted on my talk page to welcome me to Wikipedia. I'm completely new to this and as I have a tendency to being quite old-schoolish, I'm having some difficulties understanding how it all works. So I was hoping that someone experienced like you could help me out from time to time.

I thought I had made my first edit yesterday (on Wikitravel's page about Tajikistan) but now the edits seem to have disappeared (whereas yesterday they still showed after I had finished with them). They also have disappeared off my Contributions list. Does that mean the edits have been rejected? If yes, is there any way I could find out why they have been rejected so I could try to avoid making the same mistakes in the future?

Thanks in advance! Johan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wahjanto (talkcontribs) 10:51, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Wahjanto. As far as I understand it, Wikitravel is a commercial site that isn't related to Wikipedia, even if it uses the same software. You will have to ask on the help forums there if you want help with it, I think. If you have questions about Wikipedia, meanwhile, the best place to ask is at Wikipedia:Teahouse. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Question on contribution deletion

Hi Cordless Larry,

This is with respect to deletion of my contribution regarding "Ankur Shiv Bhandari" today. Ankur is the first Indian origin politician elected in our local government in Bracknell, United Kingdom which is a matter of great pride for us. In publishing that "fact" on Wikipedia, I believe I have followed all the norms: 1) Declared that I know Ankur Shiv Bhandari through COI declaration 2) Only added the fact that he is the First Indian origin politician elected as councillor to Bracknell forest Borough council. This is also supported by citation/reference to the relevant borough council link. 3) Only added this information in relevant sections

Can you please advise why my contributions have still been deleted?

Regards, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ons99 (talkcontribs) 18:17, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Ons99. Thanks for contacting me about this. There are two main issues here. First, the source does not establish that he is the first councillor of Indian origin elected to that council. Second, it's not clear that he meets Wikipedia's notability criteria, which require significant coverage in independent sources. See WP:POLITICIAN for specific guidance on the notability requirements for politicians. Cordless Larry (talk) 18:43, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi Cordless Larry,

Thanks for your reply. Ok, I understand the notability requirements now. We will wait for that to be achieved before making any further contributions.

Hello, Jordan Mclemont. You appear to be confusing your username with the title of an article that you were attempting to write. I moved your user page to draft space because it seemed that you were using it to draft an article, but you moved it back to user space, seemingly because you were trying to write about yourself. This isn't what user pages are for - they're for giving information about Wikipedia editing interests, etc. If you want to try writing an article, see Wikipedia:Your first article, but please read Wikipedia:Notability (music) and Wikipedia:Autobiography first. Removal of template?

Hi @Cordless_Larry :)

I worked on the templates you left on this page: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Fausto_Olivares today. I added 15 references, and links to other wikipedia pages (too much that an admin removed them, but they still are some).

I was wondering if you think you could take off the template - or if it's not ready yet, please let me know and I will try improving it.

Many thanks!

Hippolyte Hippolyte sans MS (talk) 20:57, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Hello again, Hippolyte sans MS. Unfortunately the template needs to stay as long as the "his life" and "chronology" sections lack referecens, because readers need to be able to know that the information comes from reliable sources. See WP:VERIFY on this. By the way, yhe chronology section should probably be removed entirely and that material covered in regular prose instead. Cordless Larry (talk) 06:54, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

You're a 'Featured Host'

You may have seen this announcement that all the 'Featured Hosts' - whose names and pictures randomly cycle round in the Teahouse Header - have just been updated.

As you are currently one of the 29 most active editors at WP:TH, your name and an image has now replaced that of an inactive host. But because you haven't yet added yourself to the full list of active hosts, I have chosen what I hope might be an acceptable image to you (over the default picture of a cup of green tea). It would be great if you would now do two things:

  • Check or change the 'featured host' image allocated to you. Edit it at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host/Featured/17, or undo my changes if you don't wish to be 'featured'.
  • Create a 'host profile' for yourself, and choose a relevant picture - click the 'Experienced editor?' button in the TH Header to formally sign up to create a separate entry on the full list of all 89 current hosts which new editors can view.

Many thanks, Nick Moyes (talk) 09:49, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

It was deleted because it contained material attacking other editors, contrary to WP:HITLIST, and pornographic images, which are not suitable for user pages. I see that you have now been blocked indefinitely, which is appropriate given that you were clearly not here to contribute to the encyclopedia. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:43, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Hii, can you please check my sandbox article and confirm me that is it now ready to publish or verifiable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adarsd18 (talkcontribs) 18:09, 16 July 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Adarsd18. I took a quick look and checked a couple of sources that you've used to support the material about the hacking, and they don't mention Hota. Please see Wikipedia:Verifiability to understand why this is important. If you have any further questions, I suggest asking them at Wikipedia:Teahouse. Mike_Buchanan_(politician)

I appreciate your contributions, but in one of your recent edits to Mike Buchanan (politician), it appears that you have re-distorted the neutral point of view which is against Wikipedia's policies. NPOV is a fundamental policy of Wikipedia and requires you to undertake good and unbiased research using the best sources available.

Specifically, I had amended text to say that allegations "University staff had made unsubstantiated claims". Given that there are currently outstanding legal actions regarding actions by J4MB against violence by agitators, this seemed to me to be closer to a NPOV than saying "University staff had expressed concern". The citations quoted support the statement that the claims were unsupported, so saying they were unsupported is certainly not original research by any stretch of a reasonable imagination. If the full story had been left intact, in which the violence by agitators was included, that would have been enough to balance the information. But that has also been removed, leaving a very one-sided impression that is not what the bulk of available evidence supports. To give even a semblance of NPOV, the accurate statement, supported by citations, that "University staff had made unsubstantiated claims" should be replaced unless you can find citations to support a contrary view. In furtherance of Wikipedia's policies, I look forward to you re-doing that edit. 46.233.112.241 (talk) 08:23, 18 July 2019 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I don't see anything in the source that establishes that the academics' claims were unsubstantiated. In any case, "University staff had expressed concern" is merely descriptive, and doesn't imply that those concerns were necessarily substantiated. Cordless Larry (talk) 10:31, 18 July 2019 (UTC)

MigrationWatch

I think it is the article, not the lede that requires your attention. If the lede is meant to summarise the article, I feel that my version met the brief. Valetude (talk) 18:41, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

I agree that the article needs some work, Valetude, but the problem was that your addition included opinions that weren't attributed but were rather stated as fact in Wikipedia's voice, such as "it has gained increasing acceptance". I also didn't think that "widely praised for raising the quality of immigration debate in the UK" was a balanced assessment of what the sources say about the organisation. Bosnian war

Hi

Why did you remove the parties who supported BiH on the article Bosnian war? America supported Bosnia diplomatically, and Iran even had proposals for an armed intervention by Muslim countries in Bosnia, etc. I'm just curious on why you decided to remove it, because to me it doesn't make sense. --Spafky (talk) 13:00, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

I reverted its addition because Pincrete had already removed it, here, Spafky. Per WP:BRD, the proposed addition should be discussed on the article's talk page. Cordless Larry (talk) 13:19, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Americans of British Ancestry

Hi Larry,

Americans who enumerate their ancestry as British, Cornish, English, Scottish, Scots-Irish, Manx, Welsh, Orkney, Ulster-Scots, or related, numbered 34,275,567 in 2013. This figure should have already been listed on the page. Those who list their ancestry as "American" are of British origin. Residents self-identifying as British numbered 61 million in 1980; 30 million people of British ancestry did not die in 30 years without producing a single child.

The page in question is in discussion of emigrants of British ethnic and ancestral origin, beginning with the settlement of the former British colonies. There are in fact more people of ethnic British background in the US than in Britain itself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 111818b (talkcontribs) 10:26, 27 August 2019 (UTC) 111818b (talk) 10:43, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

Streatham and Clapham High School: Proposed new section: Pupil count planning breach and application to expand

Hi,

I have put a suggested new section for Streatham and Clapham High School on Talk:Streatham and Clapham High School. I noticed you've raised WP:COI and WP:PROMOTION concerns about the page's current content, and so I wanted to run this by you rather than just sticking it straight in.

If you have any suggestions I'm more than happy to adopt them. I think that the information - however it might best be presented - is important and highly relevant to many people who are interested in the school. It would be great if it could achieve a stable presence on the page, if sufficient consensus can be reached on an appropriate form of presentation.

Many Thanks, West Streatham Resident (talk) 12:31, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

I don't have any objection to the addition of neutrally worded, well-sourced material, West Streatham Resident. The issue was that it appeared that people associated with the school were trying to use the article to promote it, but so long as that doesn't apply to you, do go ahead and edit the article. Cordless Larry (talk) 22:23, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for responding

I'll go ahead and edit (with improved cite detail, but no other changes)

Sources

Hello,

I've received two messages from your re updates to Richard Rose page. There is a source in my text? I'm not sure why I am receiving messages saying there is no source?

Regards, Victor

VictorBailey25 (talk) 15:10, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me, VictorBailey25. If you look at the current version of the article, you'll see that the content is accompanied by footnote references. You replaced the content with text that listed a single source at the end. At a minimum, this new text would require footnote references pointing to the specific pages in that source that support each part of the article. However, the source is a book by Rose, and Wikipedia's preference is that articles be based largely on sources independent of the subject. Furthermore, aspects of your text were too promotional, such as "he has been an innovator in political science and public policy research". If you have some sort of personal or financial relationship with Rose, please consult WP:COI. Cordless Larry (talk) 16:13, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello Cordless Larry,

Thank you for your email and guidance about what is needed. I have put on various references starting with Who's Who, where Professor Rose has a very long entry. There are also references to websites and publications in academic journals and for personal matters to his memoir. Just about to post this. Would appreciate any feedback if there is still anything wrong?

Kind regards, Victor — Preceding unsigned comment added by VictorBailey25 (talkcontribs) 10:45, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

If you used Who's Who as a source, then you appear to have forgotten to cite it, VictorBailey25. Your version of the article didn't cite any sources using inline citations and also contained promotional wording. I suggest that you discuss any proposed changes on the article's talk page, as your attempts to rewrite the article have now been reverted several times. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:44, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

New editor

Hi Cordless Larry, I am very new to the wiki editor game. I created an edit a few days ago, and an administrator deleted it - with the statement "They're just way too detailed for Wikipedia and not helpful here." The administrator has become quite rude, when questioned as to what guideline is used to decide who detailed is too detailed - and is now following all my edits. So my questions are: (1) How does one strike the balance - when the aforementioned statement is subjective and arbitrary?, and (2) How dose one steer clear of troll administrators who have taken a lot against you? I would love to hear from an experienced editor like yourself on navigating (previously unknown intricacies that comprise) this wonderful organic system we call wikipedia (NRoss427 (talk) 21:04, 26 September 2019 (UTC))

Hello, NRoss427. First, I would strongly suggest not calling administrators trolls (or at least without very good evidence, which should be presented at WP:AN if it exists). Article content is determined by consensus amongst editors, and if your edits are reverted then your next step should be to discuss the issue on the article talk page. See WP:BRD for guidance on this process. If you have further questions about how Wikipedia works, the best place to ask is at the Teahouse. Cordless Larry (talk) 08:24, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

Hello - I just discovered that in 2017 you effectively wiped out a page I originally created: Majithia Sirdars.

Someone else had previously flagged it (back in 2016) for deletion and I had responded to that claim. I got no responses. The article remained. And now it is effectively gone!

Page: Majithia Sirdars

The Majithia Sirdars are a significant part of Punjab history. I think the page was serving good purpose. You have asked for references. I am going to research and obtain a few. Just letting you know that I intend to restore this article. But I will be restoring it to the version that I feel was true to its intent: that of the historical aspects of it. This will mean pre-1947. I notice from the revision history that many edits were made later that brought in contemporary information about this family. I intend to forego those sections. I will make a note up top that this page is limited to pre-Independence history of this family.

If you have any additional concerns, please let me know so I may deal with them in my restoration. Thanks. Rsshergill (talk) 00:20, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Adding to my previous message: I notice that the Speedy Deletion you initiated (and I missed) in 2017 gave the reason as: Not clear why this family is important. I will be addressing this in the rewrite. (Previous attempts at deletion by another individuals never gave a reason and never responded to my messages). Thanks. Rsshergill (talk) 00:28, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

That sounds fine, Rsshergill, but I didn't nominate the article for speedy deletion. Perhaps you're thinking of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Majithia Sirdars (2nd nomination) (though my nomination rationale wasn't "Not clear why this family is important"). This may be a new Marquis de la Eirron sockpuppet

An IP address just started editing today and immediately (i) reformatted the notes to the List of African-American United States Representatives article, (ii) added an "LGBT Members of Parliament" tag to a British politician, and (iii) made changes to the photos and to the titles of nobility in the List of LGBT politicians in the United Kingdom article. See [1]. What do you think, is this the latest Marquis de la Eirron sockpuppet? AuH2ORepublican (talk) 18:26, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, AuH2ORepublican. I've blocked that and one other address. Cordless Larry (talk) 18:36, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
Hi. I suspect that the Marquis is now going by "American Political 19." He signed up on September 30 and started furious editing on October 7, mostly on articles involving British and American politicians who are ethnic or religious minorities, who have been convicted of crimes or who have switched parties, including his typical deletion of entire sections, changing photos, and adding categories; he also has made one or two edits regarding titles of nobility. See https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Special:Contributions/AmericanPolitical19. What do you think? AuH2ORepublican (talk) 19:05, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks AuH2ORepublican. I'm investigating. Cordless Larry (talk) 09:21, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
Now blocked. Cordless Larry (talk) 13:02, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
Thank you very much. I see that he made several additional edits yesterday that made it even clearer that he was a Marquis sock. I can't understand that guy--he wastes so much time making idiosyncratic edits that end up getting reverted as soon as his behavior makes it clear that it's him again. Charles Ghigna article rewrite suggestion

Thanks, Larry. I appreciate your help in resolving the problems on my article. As you suggested, I would like to have an independent editor rewrite the article. The independent editor can simply delete most of the entire article and keep only the basic facts of the first two paragraphs. My pleasure, Ghigna. Regarding your son, my concerned was that he doesn't meet the inclusion criteria for a Wikipedia article, which are explained at WP:GNG and WP:NARTIST and summarised at WP:GOLDENRULE. Unfortunately the Bhamwiki sources can't be used as that is a wiki site (i.e. is user-editable) and therefore not considered reliable for Wikipedia's sourcing requirements. The AL source is OK, but isn't on its own enough to demonstrate notability. A few more detailed newspaper articles about your son would probably get him over the line, but I haven't been able to find much with my own searches. Hi am new here and i just want to say that that the reasons for my edits in Somalis in Norway page is becosue i believe that its written in a certain perspective and is purely written in a specific narrative which i believe doesn't hold a fair and balanced description of Somali community in Norway.
