Your submissions
Alright, after discussing it with Casliber, if you want to win, you need to provide the amount of diffs to catch and surpass Snowmanradio, otherwise we cannot take any of the rerates. Mitch32(New digs, new life, same old stubborn.) 04:02, 2 January 2014 (UTC
- @Mitchazenia: How many is that? ChrisGualtieri (talk) 14:43, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
- It would take 6,493 of them, but subtract that from your stubs. Mitch32(The man who renounces himself, comes to himself.) 15:04, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
- @Mitchazenia: Alright. When's the deadline to the diff grab? Its going to be an all-day kind of thing at the minimum. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 15:28, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
- As fast as you can, there is another user whose points are waiting on you. Mitch32(The man who renounces himself, comes to himself.) 00:49, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
- @Mitchazenia: I've been checking and I can't see any requirement on the contest page for each one needing to be done via a diff. At this point, it'd take days to weeks to go through it. I've reported them and that was a massive and crazy effort as well just to verify that each one was done. This seems like an inordinate amount of time for this unless there is an easier way. I'm sure even the "most recent diff" on those pages would be alright, but lacking some clear method. I think it's a futile effort when I've already submitted them. Heck, I'd submit several times more than that if I have to do that because I did way way more. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 01:17, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

- @Mitchazenia: I'm asking for a script to be made to get the list and diffs together on a single page. It should not be too difficult and it won't take many many hours to grab each diff by hand through the history. I over exerted myself by a good amount for the contest, pulling many 8 and 16 hour days and waiting to slow periods to edit heavily while balancing content work and other issues. Though I'd like a bit more input about the matter from the judge's side. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 19:01, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, but even Snowmanradio posted 6,492 diffs. You need the diffs because you can't expect computers to load the histories of over 6500 articles and have to go find it. We're only human. And really, you should've considered that when you chose to rerate 34,040 articles. Mitch32(The man who renounces himself, comes to himself.) 04:19, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
- Chris, I do appreciate the hours you've put in, but checking them all has been time-consuming on our side too. For the expands, we can't accept unassessed articles as we didn't discuss about having them in the first place (I wish I had now but that is something for next time - it is not fair on other contestants), and 1,2, 5,6 and 7 were actually pretty large to begin with - I might have rated them a start but will give you the benefit of the doubt.
- We need to wrap this up, the requirement is graphed out on the entries page at the top, right after "...start your engines.....". Who is doing the script? Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 01:10, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
GA Reviews
The Reviewer Barnstar | ||
Thank you for taking many of the articles on the GA backlog. Your work in this area is greatly appreciated. Thanks again and happy new year! ComputerJA (☎ • ✎) 18:38, 6 January 2014 (UTC) |
- While I do commend you for taking on so many reviews, I'm not sure I see the benefit of "claiming" so many reviews at one time- obviously, once you've started the review page, others are less likely to pick it up. This is especially true considering you've chosen to take on some big articles, like meditation, which will naturally take a long time to review (unless they are quick-fails). Perhaps you could consider cutting back to only a the unstarted reviews, and instead take on reviews as-and-when? If you do choose to do that, perhaps consider tagging some of your pending reviews with {{db-self}}. J Milburn (talk) 22:29, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
- @J Milburn: When I take reviews, I am announcing them, that's all. I don't like to leave the page blank. Though the last part of your question confuses me. Though I assume you are saying "you've taken a lot of reviews that have not yet been completed perhaps you should db-self the others?" Well, that's what most normal people do, but when I review a GAN I am a bit...unique. First, I print out the article on paper and get a feel for its wording size and context - no links to explain - and I check for prose and other issues. It makes it much easier to catch unreliable sources as well. Then I put my content notes down on the back of the pages; only after marking up the front. From there I go and do the GAN tools and go through the issues, and check for other issues and then I provide the review. The process of reviewing and later re-reviewing makes it better to address the article's issues and it helps improve my own skills in the process. I typically go through about 50-60 pages of printed text per day. I try to take 2 days worth of reviews at once, and as a result - actually posting the reviews to Wikipedia is actually where I slacked off, I finished all the reviews before I took new ones on paper! Though I am rectifying that now. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 05:05, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
Southern African Heritage Authorities
Chris, Thanks for recently assessing the article National Heritage Council of Namibia on which I have done a small amount of work over the past year. I have written a number of other similar articles on heritage authorities in South Africa all of which require assessment and thought you might be interested as no one else I have tried seems to be. If you are, I would be most grateful if you could look at the following:
- Heritage Western Cape
- Amafa aKwaZulu-Natali
- Ngwao Boswa Kapa Bokone
- National Monuments Council (South Africa and Namibia)
- Historical Monuments Commission
Thanks

And I've seen pickier reviewers (not to say that your review was picky, I found it adequate). Come to think of it, I'm a very picky reviewer myself. A good day to you to, and have a nice 2014! I didn't think it was sour grapes on your part at all. I thought the complaints about your entries by other people involved were sour grapes. I think you did a lot of work, and should be rewarded for it. Canada Hky (talk) 19:32, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
- I don't they are acting on "sour grapes" either. I got a lot of work to do and I just think if you take the "money" aspect out, the end result of improvement for Wikipedia is the same. I don't know what I'd be able to do with "Euros" because I have to use USD and the only thing it will do is purchase books for my wife. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 19:34, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

To add something to your Gage article, a patient of the week on the House, MD episode entitled "The Social Contract" is likened to Gage. In the episode, the patient has frontal lobe disinhibition, Gage is mentioned several times throughout the episode, including mentions of the railroad spike injury. Hi Chris. 8 days ago you 'claimed' a couple of articles I nominated for GA status, just wondering if you were going to look at them soon, as if not it might be a good idea for them to be renominated so someone else can have a look at reviewing them. Thanks, Samwalton9 (talk) 17:18, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
- I already did them, I just have to post them up. Sorry for the delay. I took a few that required in depth checking. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 17:24, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
- Oh ok thanks, disregard that message then :) Samwalton9 (talk) 17:25, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
- I had them printed out, and I lost my notes on it. I got Shangguan Yunzhu, Type 94 Nambu pistol and several others I just need to post up. I sorta put them into the wrong work paper pile and I just had to dig them up. I have a whole shoebox of them now. You reviews are up, but as you can tell, the content portions are where I had some issues, but I didn't get all the way through the Steam article yet. I've been trying to dig up the sources and I took a few that had over 400 references those are tough. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 18:58, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Beautiful Dreamer
Good news, I found my original japanese cinema program for this, as well as the 3rd and 4th UY movies. Intriguingly it has a 2 page interview with Mamoru Oshii, although I've no idea what it says... I guess I could slowly try and make an approximate translation, but it could take a while. Still, a good excuse to work on my Japanese.
If one of us starts a page in userspace, we can work on it as and when, until it's of a suitable standard before moving it to mainspace. Dandy Sephy (talk) 21:30, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
- I wouldn't worry about such a notable entry being deleted if it had a few paragraphs of text. I can drum up something later today... I submitted 3 GANs yesterday and I got a few reviewed to get through. I've also been tidying up Monster some. My only real question is whether or not I want to play the DYK game with the article and nominate it for the main page. My Japanese is not great, but I can read more kanji then most people. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 21:37, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
- Well it was less about satisfying notability and more that I don't see the point in putting up a quick article when we are intending to make it one of quality. I'd rather develop it in user space first. Then again, if you think you can put together a good start in such a short time that I can simply add to I'm not going to stop you! Dandy Sephy (talk) 22:30, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

WCLG (AM) GAN
Sorry for the delay, I changed the date in the "Programming" section to 2014. Nothing has changed since 2013, but I thought it best to be up-to-date. I removed the Google StreetView links as the one of the tower really didn't add anything to the article, it's a tower. The other, of the studio, wasn't necessary anymore since we have that image. By the way, the image was taken by User:Bitmapped and released under CC 3.0. - Neutralhomer • Talk • 23:08, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

I just wanted to say that I appreciate that you are putting out the effort to review an article as large as Steam (software). I truly appreciate it and I look forward to hearing what you have to say. DARTHBOTTO talk•cont 01:24, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Legobot messages
Hi there. I noticed the comments you made at Talk:Third Battle of Gaza/GA1 and Talk:Battle of Rafa/GA1. I agree with what you said there, and I've left a message with RoslynSKP to ask her to stop her edits to reviews and talk pages in the topic area and seek clarification before going any further. One thing I did notice was that you said here that you held off and didn't respond on her talk page. That was absolutely the right thing to do, but when you put the reviews on hold, Legobot left messages on RoslynSKP's talk page and signed them on your behalf. I don't suppose there was any way to prevent that, but it is a bit unfortunate. Anyway, I'll leave you to sort out the reviews, thanks for taking those on. Carcharoth (talk) 01:43, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- Oh darn, it does do that, I forgot. I can't stop them either. It was unavoidable given that their must not be code to avoid a nominator for the topic ban. I took them on, but I hope it is okay. It was the last in queue and the person was not under the topic ban for a period of time too. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 05:26, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

SSF revisited
Mr. Gualtieri, I'm still looking for info on Sunni Students' Federation and it still just seems to be their own website and an article in The Hindu. Are you sure you wouldn't want an AfD to be opened? The notability seems shaky. MezzoMezzo (talk) 04:00, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Good times to step back
One of the good times to step back and let others decide, is when a user who is banned from interacting with you, is under discussion at the admin noticeboard. WikiCup 2014 January newsletter
The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
- 12george1 (submissions) and TropicalAnalystwx13 (submissions) were the first people to score, for the good article Tropical Storm Bret (1981) and its good article review respectively. 12george1 was also the first person to score in 2012 and 2013.
- Sven Manguard (submissions) scored the first ITN points for 2014 North American polar vortex.
- WonderBoy1998 (submissions) scored points for an early good topic, finishing off Wikipedia:Featured topics/She Wolf.
- TheAustinMan (submissions) scored the first bonus points of the competition, for his work on Typhoon Vera.
- Igordebraga (submissions) has scored the highest number of bonus points for a single article, for the high-importance Jurassic Park (film).
Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.
Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The article Islamic Assembly of North America has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Defunct group centered in a small city. Tagged for notability for almost 6 years.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}

Hi! and a query about the "Function Space" article
Hi, Chris.
I'm writing to you about the article "Function Space," which I came across in the course of reading about analysis.
Did you write the article, or are you an editor who came across it, and like me was a bit puzzled by it?
There seem to me to be two, or perhaps three problems with the article. The first is simply the writing; it is apparently by somebody whose native language is not English, given the odd use and occasional absence of "a" or "the" when one or the other is called for to make something clear. The first paragraph of the article seems incoherent to me; is the verb "maps" missing from the bit involving sets X and Y? Or am I wrong, through ignorance of some facet of set theory?
One does't talk about "cat air," the air breathed by cats, and "dog air," the air breathed by dogs. What is interesting about the spaces in which functions make their statements? It seems to me possible that "function space" is perhaps a false category, a non-existent thing.
However, if I am wrong about the artificiality or irrelevance or nonexistence of the notion, then problem two is the incoherent handling of the very great variety of functions. The article should either say less or say more. Possibly, e.g., "A function space is the space in which a function has relevance." Period. By contrast, perhaps, function spaces form a topic in which there are questions, problems, similarities and differences, and we can see that by considering, for example, the following functions and their spaces...
I'd like to hear your thoughts.
Best wishes,
David Lloyd-Jones david.lloydjones@gmail.com

Re: Question
Since the two GA reviews noted had not been started in a month's time, it didn't look like they were going to be. You clearly have a large number of reviews going that you're doing good work and actively working on, so perhaps having those two back in the queue is for the best. If you are able to jump back in and do them, then you can always go ahead and re-note. Just don't want you to spread yourself too thin, which it seemed like was happening in this case.
