Difficulty of closing Wikipedia talk:Conflict of interest#Investigating COI policy

The issue you raised is serious, and I see two milieus and one concrete proposal passing. The rest may not reach the consensus. However, I won't be able to aide the closure. Lately, I've seen some discussions requiring more than one closer to provide a lengthy, summarizing rationale, like the WP:PC2016. March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

• Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
• Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
• 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
• Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Maintain it. Take a deep breath and carry on. Just maybe comment that you've found it a bit heavy going but really want to end up on good terms. A thorough reviewer is a blessing about 95% of the time. For a laugh, take a look at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Redback spider/archive1. Now that was an exercise in endurance.

I am a bit of a slob and not big on detail. Once you do a couple of these you get the hang of it much better. It's also about making these articles look schmick as well - like a proper reference. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 09:52, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

4th GA Cup - The Final

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Final Hello, GA Cup competitors! Sunday, February 26 saw the end of Round 3. Shearonink finished in first with 616 points, which is more than the point totals for all the other competitors combined! In second place, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga earned an impressive 152 points, followed by Sturmvogel_66 in third with 111 points. Chris troutman and Kees08 each received a wild-card and were able to advance to the Final Round. There was a major error on the part of the judges, and initially, 8 users were advanced instead of 5. This has been corrected, and we sincerely apologize for this confusion. In Round 3, 71 reviews were completed! At the beginning of this GA Cup, the longest wait was over 7 months; at the end of Round 3, the longest wait is still holding steady at a little over 6 months, the same as for the previous round. By the end of all three Rounds, the total number of nominations increased slightly - this suggests that users are more willing to nominate, knowing that their articles will be reviewed. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in the Final so we can keep tackling the backlog. In the Final Round, the user with the highest score will be the winner. The Final has already started and will end on March 31st at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Finals and the pools can be found here. Good luck and have fun! FAC William Pūnohu White

Hello, I don't know if you came across Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/William Pūnohu White/archive1. It was closed today because of no traffic and only 1 review after a month. The quality of the article is FAC material in my opinion. I did not ask anybody (except two users) in the initial run to review it since I was trusting that it will receive reviews. Now I am asking a couple of people here and there to see if there is enough interest to renominate it again as recommended by the closing admin. I will only go ahead and renominate it once I find a few people who wants to give it a review. Please let me know if you are interested. Ostrich

Cas......I've been using JimFBleak a lot for renaming articles, so I thought I'd try you to move the work around, so to speak.....We should rename the Ostrich article to common ostrich. Common ostrich is the IOC name, and since Somali Ostrich has been elevated to species, ostrich needs to be differentiated. It would be a similar move to common warthog when desert warthog was elevated. I'll disambig at the top of the page to link ostrich to common ostrich once the article is renamed. Common ostrich is locked, so I'm wondering if you can delete and move? I'm not an admin......Pvmoutside (talk)

4th GA Cup - Wrap Up

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Wrap Up Hello, GA Cup competitors! Saturday, April 1 concluded the 2016-2017 GA Cup. 64 reviews were completed by our finalists. Although the backlog increased by 42 over the reviewing period instead of declining, the increase suggests that the contest is encouraging editors to nominate articles for review. Congratulations to Shearonink, who is the winner of the Cup, finishing with 672 points! Once again, just as in last round, this is more than the point totals for all the other competitors combined! It was a close race for second place between Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, who achieved 164 points, and Sturmvogel_66, who earned 150. Though Sturmvogel_66 reviewed one more article than Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga managed to earn 14 points more due to reviewing older articles. Our two wildcard competitors, Kees08 and Chris troutman, came in fourth and fifth, respectively. There were some bumps in the competition this time: The sign-up deadline and the first round were both extended due to fewer competitors signing up then was planned for. And there were delays in tallying points and getting out the newsletter. The judges apologize for this latter difficulty. Lastly, mid-way through the competition we bid farewell to Zwerg Nase, who stepped down from their position as judge due to other commitments. Information about the Final can be found here. TFAR

Cas, we normally work the basis that no FA writer gets two TFAs in the same month. I want to run Vampire, because it's an area we are short on, whereas we have plenty of birds. That means your cockatoo won't run this month, but as far as I'm concerned it can stay at TFAR. Perhaps you should elevate vampire finch to FA standard and combine the themes (: Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:05, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

As one moves further away from birds, a lower proportion of things have common names...so do all the notropis fish have common names? Do you worry if a bunch are left at scientific names and others at common names? Ditto snakes (a lot of snakes were moved to scientific names some time ago). I know plants and insects are at scientific name as opposed to English for the very reason you list yellowfin bream......Notropis is mostly English, except where there is no English name (only a few species). I know fish are over 33k for species, and likely to grow. The change to English names above are redirects only, so no multiple species names for any of the above. In my opinion, I don't worry that some species articles have English names, while others are scientific names. Generally, English names are easier for google searches, but scientific names are more exact, especially when multiple species use the same name.......It looks like the Fish project standardized on English names, rather than scientific ones, which is why I am asking for the changes above. I could be convinced to standardize on all scientific names, but if the public does a search for goldfish for example, I think people would be confused if the Wikipedia page showed Carassius auratus as the first page of choice from us.......We should think how the public searches pages instead of scientists in my opinion......Pvmoutside (talk) 01:37, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Cas, see what I did with riffle minnow. Fishbase calls the American species riffle minnow, and leaves the Eurasian species with only the scientific name. The IUCN rates the American species, but not the Eurasian one, however other species in the Eurasian species' genus are called sprilins........I'd like to leave the riffle minnow as is for now, and see if I get pushback......Pvmoutside (talk) 14:25, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Too soon to reprotect Kill 'Em All

The IP may have just made a mistake. For some reason, Cyberbot II made a mistake and the page was blanked after its protection expired, and it was simply restoring it. The IP did put some that didn't belong there, but I don't think that was intentional. It was not vandalism. I believe there is not enough disruptive behavior yet to reconstitute any protection. May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

• Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
• 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
• Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
• Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

I'm not asking for a Good Article review, but I have a question. I noticed that you're reviewing a village article for Good Article status and I thought that would make you a great person to ask. My current Good Article nomination is for a small Iowa town and I thought that it would be simple to compare it to other small town articles, but I can't find any. There isn't as much of a wealth of information for small towns as large cities. I was wondering if you could give me some details on what a small town GA would need or at least link me to an article to base mine off of. The article is is Kingsley, Iowa. (talk page watcher) Little Thetford (a 4500-word FA on a town with a population of 792) is something of a model to follow for articles like this. Your best bet is generally to drop the name of the town into Amazon and see what comes up, and then make a note of the titles and put them into Worldcat to see where you can borrow them. Even the most obscure towns have often had a book published about them at some point, and once you have one book (even if it's 50 years out of date) you can use that as a framework for basic facts, and fill in the gaps with snippets you find elsewhere. ‑ Iridescent 23:05, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

Then you simply need to learn how to effectively use pagemover. Anarchyte has offered several times to help you with navigating pagemover. Alternatively, you can post questions at Wikipedia talk:Page mover. The overall point, however, is that the pages are not "locked", and you need to avoid using the term "locked" incorrectly. Cas.....I was looking at the Fish popular pages list, and Great white shark stood out to me as an article deserving featured article status (currently a good article). Query about Banning policy

Hello. The proposal of banning policy was submitted to village pump of Chinese Wikipedia recently. I would like to know how to execute it technically. It seems no any add-on installed on English Wikipedia. I found that there was an abuse filter established for it, but it was now disabled. Is it only executed manually? Recent edits in red-billed quelea

Dear Casliber, User Abductive largely deleted the etymology section in the red-billed quelea-article, based on the fact that it is "embarrassing" these statements were "sourced to a dictionary--!" I have reverted the edit that deleted the statement "Linnaeus himself did not explain the name quelea." because there is no "source for this statement". However since in the Systema Natura Linnaeus does not give an etymology, I think it is not necessary to have an other source to draw that conclusion for us. What is your assessment concerning the embarrassing situation that we derived a statement from another (rather specialised) dictionary? Thanks for your answer? However, I realize now that ı can neither link an en:WP article to e.g. tr.WP article nor upload an image at WikiMedia Commons. I asked the admin, who made the IP block, User:Vituzzu. Right @Dwergenpaartje:, I think your best bet is Nelicourvi weaver right now. Black-capped social weaver, White-browed sparrow-weaver and Fire-capped tit look a little on the slim side. Hymenaea stigonocarpa needs a taxonomy section, more in Distribution section (which should include habitat), Catamixis needs more ecology stuff, Gundelia is promising and the shroud stuff is fascinating. Needs some reorganizing. Spiranthes spiralis looks promising too. Great to see a lot of biota from Africa/Asia/Sth America being worked on. Regarding the etymology stuff. Sarawak Updates

Just noticed that ANI thread about yesterday's edit warring on the Sarawak FAC page. What a ridiculous waste of time! The guy who closed the thread displayed rare intelligence in noting: "If a rule prevents you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia, ignore it. And if you care more about rules than about encyclopedia-building, go find another website"

Today I picked out the following paragraph:

Tourism plays a major role in the economy of the state, contributing 9.3% of the state's GDP in 2015. Foreign visitors to Sarawak are predominantly from Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and China. A number of different organisations, both state and private, are involved in the promotion of tourism in Sarawak: the Sarawak Tourism Board is the state body responsible for tourism promotion in the state, various private tourism groups are united under the Sarawak Tourism Federation, and the Sarawak Convention Bureau is responsible for attracting conventions, conferences, and corporate events which are held in the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching. The public and private bodies in Sarawak hold a biannual event to award the Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Award, an award for achievements within various categories, to recognise businesses and individuals for their efforts in the development of tourism within the state

I've re-written it thus:

In the same year the top five countries for foreign visitors were Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and China. Different organisations, both state and private, are involved in the promotion of tourism: the Sarawak Tourism Board; the Sarawak Tourism Federation, a collection of private tourism groups; and the Sarawak Convention Bureau, a body responsible for promoting MICE tourism, the venue for which is the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching. The public and private bodies hold a biannual event to award the Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Award, an award for achievements within various categories, to recognise businesses and individuals for their efforts in the development of tourism in Sarawak.

Points to note:

1. You repeat "Sarawak" way too often. You don't need to. We all know what you're talking about.

2. You tell us that: "Foreign visitors to Sarawak are predominantly from Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and China". This isn't true, nor does your source, the Borneo Post, support the claim. The correct source is Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak: Visitor Arrivals into Sarawak 2015. Take a look at the figures and you'll see the word "predominantly" is incorrect: in 2015 China was only slightly ahead of Thailand, India and the UK. See how I've re-jigged your sentence.

3. See too how I'm replacing your newspaper sources with government ones: when you discuss official stuff it's usually best to use official sources. It makes you look more cleverer and more betterer.

4. You have: "the Sarawak Convention Bureau is responsible for attracting conventions, conferences, and corporate events". I've replaced this with MICE tourism, where MICE is an acronym that represents: Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events. Check to see if MICE tourism is wiki-linked.

To be frank, it seems that just about every source I check is wrong. There's an obvious conclusion to be drawn from this, but it's not up to me to make it.

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
