DYK for Memory: The Origins of Alien
On 4 December 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Memory: The Origins of Alien, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Memory: The Origins of Alien defines the Alien franchise as "a collective art form" inspired by H. P. Lovecraft, Francis Bacon, and the Greek Furies? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Memory: The Origins of Alien. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Memory: The Origins of Alien), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Requests for page protection
Hi Captain Medusa, you recently made several requests for page protection to WP:RFPP, all of which I declined. Protection is only placed if the vandalism is a problem. One instance of vandalism that has been dealt with does not mean the page requires protection. Please can you read Wikipedia:Rough_guide_to_semi-protection before making any further requests. Thank you for reviewing my article on Dov Hertz
I'm not sure how to add more context without editorializing. There are a few things interesting about Dov Hertz - he's rich. He's mysterious (his company has billions liquid capital, and there's no phone number, website or address available). He's buying up the Brooklyn waterfront. His plans to build complexes speak to trends in ecommerce changing cities and gentrification in Brooklyn. If you have any direction as to how I can enshrine this without using original research or editorializing, please let me know.

Hyde (musician) Page Edit
Hello,
I'm new to Wikipedia and I attempted to edit the article of the musician, Hyde. Much of the content needed to be changed and now after a significant of time spent correcting the information, I cannot publish my changes due to some "false/positive" error, whatever that means. Problems
- The Linter extension helps you find technical errors in articles. It did not show new changes last week. This was because of an API problem. It is now working again. [3]
- Special:Watchlist can show the wrong information again. It does not always show which edits are read and which are unread. This is because of a database problem. The developers are working on solving the problem. [4]
Changes later this week
- You can get email notifications. You can get them immediately, a summary every day or a summary once every week. If you choose a summary you can soon choose not to get notifications you have already marked as read on the wiki. [5]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 December. It will be on all wikis from 19 December (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 18 December at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The partial blocks feature is now stable. It will come to most wikis on 6 January. Your wiki can ask to wait. Contact NKohli (WMF) if you don't want it now. [6]

Kink.Page
References are now provided to the Kink.Page wiki. I am acquaintances with the owner of the company, Brandon Myers, and can confirm all of this is true. He's hired me to write several of their gay review articles and I do think the site deserves a wikipedia so that readers may understand what and who is behind it. I've never done this type of thing before, but the company has quite the untold story. That's why i'm taking the time to put it on wiki.
Is there a way I can submit the company logo to the page? I have the original file and am allowed to use it.
Thanks! Blowfish Blowfish90 (talk) 13:51, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- Blowfish90, For the article to be published. You'll need some sources from News, Book, etc.
Not
LinkedIn and Alexa. ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 13:55, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
I'm a bit strapped for resources here. The site has its own Reddit subforum which would technically count towards being a third party. Many of the issues cited here will be talked about there as well. I also have citations for other websites on the DDoS (porntrial.net and okpornpics.com each did a story), but they're blogging in nature and I wouldn't consider them news sites. This is a tough position for a site of this category. Blackballing among other things make it difficult for it to get mainstream media coverage, especially since the sites content is SFW by design.
Given the site now ranks in 175 countries and for over 20k keywords, I'd say it's getting to the point where it does need some sort of coverage. If this site is supposed to have value, you would hope it would include an article like this. I'll get the owner to cite if that is what's needed. Not sure what other options are here for us.
I'll make the edit given the 3rd party sites. Hopefully it meets standards. I'm trying here.
Blowfish90 (talk) 14:05, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- Blowfish90, Site ranking don't matter in Wikipedia. We need to verify the claims you've made not from the company employer directly. We need some kind of interview or reliable news source claiming it. Thanks ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 13:06, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
CAPTAIN MEDUSA, you misread the consensus at the WP:RM for this article: the consensus was to leave the article now at Noughts and Crosses (TV series) at Noughts and Crosses (game show), and to move Noughts and Crosses (2019 TV series) → Noughts and Crosses (TV series). Please fix this! Thanks. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 15:03, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter December 2019
- Reviewer of the Year
This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.
Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.
Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.
Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

- Redirect autopatrol
A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.
- Source Guide Discussion
Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.
- This month's refresher course
While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Question about warnings
Hi. When looking through your contribs before responding to your request at EFN, I noticed a few cases, e.g. Special:Diff/931673269 where you gave out {{uw-attempt4}} warnings, when the user had only tripped private filters, and had no edits or WP:SBL hits. Is there something I'm missing? How did you decide to give the warning? FWIW, you were correct in that case, and the user was a spambot, but I'm curious as to how you figured that out. Stalk messages handling
Hi. I saw you undid my csd request. I'm not adequately familiar with enwiki's policies and was wondering how to properly clean that page created by the LTA? As I see the same "I'm still here" stalk message was reverted on existing talk pages, and it is odd if we cannot do the same on page creations. If the page cannot be deleted, might the content be removed? Thanks, WhitePhosphorus (talk) 09:35, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
- WhitePhosphorus, The best way would be to blank/remove the message. I have gone and blanked the message. We generally don't delete talk pages. If the LTA is harassing another user best option would be revdel .Thanks. ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 09:39, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

A quick bit regarding your TEST subpage and WP:RAUTO
Hey there Captain Medusa! Thanks for adding the link to easily add a request at WP:RAUTO! I figured I'd let you know that currently when you click on the link, it creates a template for requesting the page mover permission. I get that it's a test, but it's something that I wanted to bring to your attention, because creating a submission through that link doesn't present the correct links. See WP:RAUTO#Aboudaqn for the results. Utopes (talk) 19:20, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
Tadeusz Sielanka
Dear Captain Medusa,
You have rejected my article on Tadeusz Sielanka baceause of "lack of reliable sources". All the statements in the article come from two published (with ISBN numbers) sources. One source is listed in references (Antagonizmy kontrolowane. Rozmowy i eseje o muzyce współczesnej. Sacrum Profanum 2018, edited by Jan Topolski and Krzysztof Pietraszewski, Krytyka Polityczna Publishing / The Krakow Festival Office, Warsaw 2018. ISBN 978-83-65853-92-9, s. 80-81), another one is covered by English Wikipedia itslef (Sławomir Rawicz’s book The Long Walk).
Have You considered these sources unreailable for some reasons? How can I improve the article? Will bringing information of CD release with works by Tadeusz Sielanka be helpful? The first CD with his works has just been published.

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser use very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It can lead to downgrade attacks. Since 9 December you just see a warning. Soon the browser will not connect to the wikis at all. Most are users on Android systems older than 4.4. You can read the browser recommendations. [9]
- Special:LinkSearch has been moved from the "Redirecting special pages" section on Special:SpecialPages to the "Lists of pages" section. [10]
Changes later this week
- Wikis can protect pages so that only some users can edit them. The standard protection levels are Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access and Require administrator access. If your wiki use more protection levels the technical name might be renamed for standardisation. This doesn't affect what users see. [11]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 January. It will be on all wikis from 16 January (calendar).
Future changes
- Deepcat and Catgraph will stop working. This will happen at the end of January. This is because you can now use the normal search function instead. [12]
- You can use
<ref follow="…">
to merge footnotes that follow each other. It is meant to be used for digitised books on Wikisource. If the order of the footnotes is wrong no error was shown but the bad <ref> was shown outside the <references /> list. This will change and you will see an error message instead. [13]

Hello, I just edited the Jay Shephard bio page. I tried to use the sources I could find. My first time using Wikipedia so I hope I improved that page. Do you have any pointers or suggestions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cre8tiveIQ (talk • contribs) 07:41, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- At Draft:Jay Shephard — You made a lot of claims about a living person but none of the sources support your claim. I will leave this one for another editor to review (if this is accepted it's likey to be deleted). If you want to expand this article I recommend that you look for reliable sources. For example, Newspaper articles, book etc. ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 07:50, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

- @Moonythedwarf and CAPTAIN MEDUSA: That content has repeatedly been removed only by socks and IPs belonging to the same long term abuser Hassan Guy (see the LTA for all the IP ranges that have been attributed to him). The content was not originally added by a sock and the IP that recently removed it again (citing a sock) is ironically most likely the LTA himself. As for the content itself, it is definitely fine, as we do international disputes and claims. I have thus reinstated it. Gotitbro (talk) 12:29, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Jay Shephard
Hello, I didn't know how to respond to your reply. All of my references came from different articles on the person and the awards came from the awards website. I found his book but Wikipedia said not to use the person's own work. I've seen bio pages with less verified information. I even edited one on The Prime Minister of The Bahamas. Finding information was extremely daunting and took me all night. I would not want it to get deleted, so can you give me pointers? I literally looked at numerous articles to see what information they used to create bio pages. Surely it wouldn't be fair to people in smaller countries where there aren't big publications. I really do appreciate your critics, I just want to get better so as to avoid this problem when I edit other pages. I I deleted some things and found 2 attentional new sources. I hope these are more reliable. Thanks again for your input — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cre8tiveIQ (talk • contribs) 22:50, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Growth team updates #12
Welcome to the twelfth newsletter from the Growth team!
The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.
General news
- A training for mentors has been published. The training was first tried with the Czech community, and went well.
- Growth team features have been deployed to Hungarian, Ukrainian, and Armenian Wikipedias. If your community is enthusiastic about welcoming newcomers, we encourage you to contact us so that we can verify together whether your wiki is eligible. Then you can go through the checklist to start the process of configuring the features.
Productive edits from newcomer tasks
We deployed the basic workflow for newcomer tasks to our target wikis on November 20, and the early results are exciting.
- About 1.5% of newcomers who visit their homepage complete the workflow and save a suggested edit. So far, this has amounted to over 450 edits, on all wikis, coming from both desktop and mobile users.
- When we look at the edits that newcomers make, we see that they are largely positive! We are pleased to see that this feature does not appear to encourage vandals.
- 75% of the edits are productive and unreverted.
- 95% of the edits appear to be in good faith.
- Most of the edits include copyedits and adding links, with some newcomers also adding content and references. Copyedits are suggested most strongly.
- Click here to learn more specifics about the results so far.
Topic matching deployed
The results from our user tests showed us that newcomers are likely to do more suggested edits if they can choose articles related to a topic that they're interested in, such as "science", "music", or "sports".
- On January 21, we deployed topic matching on our pilot wikis. Newcomers are now using it. We expect it to cause more newcomers to try suggested edits, and to keep making more of them.
- In the coming weeks, we will be making improvements to the accuracy of the algorithm used to topic matching, which is part of the ORES project.
Next steps for newcomer tasks
Because we are seeing positive results from newcomer tasks, the Growth team plans to concentrate our efforts on improving the workflow and encouraging more newcomers to use it.
- Guidance: next, we will be using the help panel to provide guidance to newcomers as they do suggested edits, and to prompt them to do another edit after completing their first one. In user tests for this feature, demo videos were one of the favorite features, and we will think about how these might be added.
- Starting the workflow: only about 20% of newcomer who visit their homepage begin the newcomer tasks workflow. We are going to be trying out different layouts of the homepage to encourage more newcomers to try newcomer tasks.
- Additional task types: we are researching methods to recommend more specific tasks to newcomers, such as specific links to add, or images that could be added to articles from Commons.

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020
Hello CAPTAIN MEDUSA,
- Source Guide Discussion
The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.
- Redirects
New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.
- Discussions and Resources
- There is an ongoing discussion around changing notifications for new editors who attempt to write articles.
- A recent discussion of whether Michelin starred restraunts are notable was archived without closure.
- A resource page with links pertinent for reviewers was created this month.
- A proposal to increase the scope of G5 was withdrawn.
- Refresher
Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Copy edit of Jennifer Aniston performances
I finished copy edit on List of Jennifer Aniston performances. Some notes:
- Are there any sources which discuss the roles she's taken as a whole? It seems she has played mainly comedic roles (sitcoms and comedy films – everything except Cake (2014 film) in the lead), perhaps it could be stated in the lead sentence that she is mainly known for her comedic roles? Do any sources call her a comedian? Also, could perhaps note that Cake was her most successful/best received/most notable dramatic role?
- I noticed that the article for The Morning Show (American TV series) calls it a satirical drama. I'm not familiar with it, but maybe you could check where sources place it on the comedy–drama spectrum, if it should be called a drama, comedy-drama, satirical drama, or something else.
Apart from acting, Aniston has directed three films including Room 10, Burma: It Can't Wait, and Five.
– is this outside the scope of the article? I don't especially mind it.- I tightened up some of the descriptions of nominations and awards, though I think these do highlight her more-notable performances.
- The tables all look good. Nice use of {{dagger}}.
Let me know if you have any questions. – Reidgreg (talk) 17:50, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 March newsletter
And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.
Our top scorers in Round 1 were:
- Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
- Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
- Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
- Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
- CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
- The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included L293D, Kingsif, Enwebb, Lee Vilenski and CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup newsletter correction
There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter; L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead, Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews. Problems
- Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [25]
Changes later this week
- If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [26]
- When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [27]
- On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [28]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 March. It will be on all wikis from 5 March (calendar).
Future changes
- The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. You can give feedback. [29]
- There is a vote on the creation of a new user group called abuse filter manager. The vote runs from March 1 to March 31 on Meta.
-
wgMFSpecialCaseMainPage
was used for the mobile site. It was deprecated in 2017. It will stop working in April. Wikis should see if they use it. If they do they should fix it. You can read more and ask for help. This affects 183 wikis. There is a list. [30]

Future changes
- There is a plan for new requirements for user signatures. You can give feedback.
- The Wikipedia Android app will do push notifications if users want them. This could help you see for example when someone wrote on your talk page or your edit was reverted. This will come later this year. [34]

OrphanReferenceFixer: Help on reversion
Hi there! I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. Recently, you reverted my fix to A Story About My Uncle.
If you did this because the references should be removed from the article, you have misunderstood the situation. Most likely, the article originally contained both <ref name="foo">...</ref>
and one or more <ref name="foo"/>
referring to it. Someone then removed the <ref name="foo">...</ref>
but left the <ref name="foo"/>
, which results in a big red error in the article. I replaced one of the remaining <ref name="foo"/>
with a copy of the <ref name="foo">...</ref>
; I did not re-insert the reference to where it was deleted, I just replaced one of the remaining instances. What you need to do to fix it is to make sure you remove all instances of the named reference so as to not leave any big red error.
If you reverted because I made an actual mistake, please be sure to also correct any reference errors in the page so I won't come back and make the same mistake again. Also, please post an error report at User talk:AnomieBOT so my operator can fix me! If the error is so urgent that I need to be stopped, also post a message at User:AnomieBOT/shutoff/OrphanReferenceFixer. Thanks! Instant GAN fails
CAPTAIN MEDUSA, when someone makes an out-of-process GA nomination, the thing to do is to remove the nomination from the talk page, not to fail it. You cannot fail because the nomination was problematic, only if it doesn't meet the criteria. I'll take care of the rest of these. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:36, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- BlueMoonset, Ahh, I see. Thanks for letting me know. ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 18:37, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- For future reference, the relevant passage on the GA nomination instructions page reads,
Nominators who are not significant contributors to the article should consult regular editors of the article on the article talk page prior to a nomination.
So if they've consulted on the talk page and there's consensus to go ahead, it's perfectly fine that they haven't previously worked on the article, so long as they intend to make the necessary fixes in the course of the review. If they haven't consulted, though, removing the nomination is the way to go. I usually post to the nominator's talk page with the instructions quote to let them know why the nomination was removed. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:48, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- For future reference, the relevant passage on the GA nomination instructions page reads,
When was asking permission to nominate it a requirement? I had every intention to make any and all necessary changes but instead the nomination gets thrown out before I even get chance to work on it. Rusted AutoParts 19:02, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

- Did you even read the message above? ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 19:22, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- From the exact same instructions page:"Anyone may nominate an article to be reviewed for GA, although it is preferable that nominators have contributed significantly to the article and are familiar with its subject and its cited sources". May not have a sizeable contribution to some of these pages but I am familiar with the content and the sources. That's how I've operated. I make the necessary edits when they are raised on the review. I had every intention to fulfil the needs of a review. Rusted AutoParts 19:28, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Request for the closure of the account
Good morning CAPTAIN MEDUSA, today 15 April 2020 I've saved a request for the closure of my user account on it.wikipedia. I've followed the instructions that some administrators gave me on my user talk page which now has been deleted, according to the website rules and to what I've asked.
My request isn't yet visible on it:WP:RA. I would like to do the same on en.wikipedia: I mean to have my user account permanently blocked with the deletion of the related user talk page. I don't know the specific rules of en.wikipedia about that and then hope someone can help me in this issue. Thanks in advance for your eventual collaboration.Micheledisaveriosp (talk) 12:00, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
- I can't help you with that because I am not an admin yet. @Xaosflux: can you help? ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 15:03, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Micheledisaveriosp: there is no method to "close" an account, what I suggest is that you request a Wikipedia:Courtesy vanishing. You may place {{speedy}} on your userpages to have them deleted. As noted on the vanishing page, we don't delete "user talk" pages, though they may be blanked. — xaosflux Talk 15:26, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
- With that being said, nothing else to do here - this account has been globally locked (meta:Special:CentralAuth/Micheledisaveriosp) so there won't be any more requests from it now. — xaosflux Talk 15:29, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

Ways to improve Dayouth
Hello, CAPTAIN MEDUSA,
Thank you for creating Dayouth.
I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:
Hi - as far as I can see term as described is accurate. However, the it is rather difficult to match the material added to the sources provided. For example, in Atigehetchi (2007) the pages cited refer to an entire chapter on artificial insemination, with the word dayyuth mentioned once in passing. In Hamamra (2018), the word is also mentioned once in passing. I don't have access to the other two, but one concerns 18th Century Syria so I do not think provides much insight into contemporary usage.
The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Goldsztajn}}
. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~
. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.
Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

WikiCup 2020 May newsletter
The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.
Our top scorers in round 2 were:
- Epicgenius, with 2333 points from one featured article, forty-five good articles, fourteen DYKs and plenty of bonus points
- Gog the Mild, with 1784 points from three featured articles, eight good articles, a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews and lots of bonus points
- The Rambling Man, with 1262 points from two featured articles, eight good articles and a hundred good article reviews
- Harrias, with 1141 points from two featured articles, three featured lists, ten good articles, nine DYKs and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews
- Lee Vilenski with 869 points, Hog Farm with 801, Kingsif with 719, SounderBruce with 710, Dunkleosteus77 with 608 and MX with 515.
The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Correcting notification templates
Hi there, hope you're well!
I saw you corrected a notification template on the RfA currently ongoing, and just thought I'd drop by to let you know that, whilst your intentions are admirable, it won't actually do anything
If you take a look at the technical manual for Echo, the system that powers MediaWiki notifications, you'll see that the requirements for a ping to be successfully parsed through it are quite strict and limited - and one of them is that "the diff chunk must be recognised as an addition of new lines of text, not a change to existing lines", so if a user's ping is broken when they first post it, unfortunately it's not fixable without adding another comment separately (perhaps in small text below) to fix the ping yourself.

Minecraft Multiplayer Fun
Hi! Thank you for the edits over at Minecraft Multiplayer Fun. I do have a question though. You italicized the title of the video and I was wondering if that is correct? I don't think there has been a standard for YouTube videos (at least there doesn't seem to be one that I've seen). I know song recordings are in "this format", and films, novels, and music albums are in this format. But should all YouTube videos be in that latter format? And what about YouTube channels? I figure YouTube series (like The Philip DeFranco Show) are italicized, but for example I think channels should be akin to TV channels and have no formatting (i.e. Nickelodeon/PewDiePie). How do we go about setting a potential standard on Wikipedia? Soulbust (talk) 00:47, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- Soulbust, I have followed the same style as the first YouTube video. I can change it back if it is incorrect. ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 11:05, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- CAPTAIN MEDUSA, Yeah I think what YouTube video articles do is they get the Film infobox which I believe automatically italicizes the title, which does apply to some videos that are short films (like Humans Need Not Apply) but I don't know if it necessarily applies to all videos. Like if the video is an episode of a YouTuber's series, I would assume the episode/video proper would follow the conventions of say like: Ozymandias (Breaking Bad). I'm wondering if it'd be possible to get a YouTube video infobox with parameters that'd be YouTube-specific/exclusive like the channel and maybe the external link to the video like how songs have the music video linked in the infobox. Soulbust (talk) 00:02, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- Soulbust, By using "| italic title=no" fixes the title issue. ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 14:37, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

Yu (surname 余) Page move
Hi! I've seen that you've moved the page Yu (surname 余) to Yu (surname). Unfortunately, I disagree with this move. This article is about a specific Chinese surname, Yu that uses the Chinese character, 余. The current title, Yu (surname) is too broad, as there are many other Chinese surnames translated as Yu that do not use the 余 character, as well as other languages (such as Korean) that use the surname, Yu. Either the page should be moved back to Yu (surname 余), or the article should be merged into Yu (Chinese surname). Thanks for your time. CountHacker (talk) 01:32, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

Growth team newsletter #13
Welcome to the thirteenth newsletter from the Growth team!
The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.
Join the conversation: structured tasks
We are looking for community input on a new project to make it easy for newcomers to make real article edits.
In our previous newsletter, we talked about the productive edits coming from the newcomer tasks feature. Those good results have continued: about 900 newcomers made over 5,000 suggested edits so far. We've learned that newcomers are interested in receiving suggested edits.
Now, we are thinking about how to supply them a feed of easy edits that will help more of them be successful quickly. We have a new idea called "structured tasks". This would aim to break down edits into steps that are easy for newcomers and easy on mobile devices.
In the past, certain kinds of editing tasks have been structured. For instance, adding categories through HotCat. Now, we are thinking about how to structure the editing of articles. The goal is to allow newcomers can make large content additions, especially from their mobile devices.
Please visit the project page and respond to the discussion questions listed on the talk page. You are welcome to show this project to others in your community. You can help by translating the materials to your language so that more voices can join in. We will be having this conversation until June 18.
Expanding to more wikis
We have expanded to six new wikis, and are looking for more interested communities.
In the last two months, we deployed Growth features to six new wikis: Ukrainian, Serbian, Hungarian, Armenian, and Basque Wikipedias, and French Wiktionary. Newcomers from these wikis have already contributed over 600 edits through Growth features.
We want to expand to more wikis in the coming months, and we are looking for interested communities. French Wikipedia already agreed and will be the next one to join the experiment. We will contact several other wikis in the coming weeks to offer them to participate.
Do you think the Growth Team features would be a good addition to your wiki? Please see this translatable summary of Growth features. You can share with your communities and start a discussion. Then, please contact us to begin the process!
Other updates
Work continues on improving newcomer tasks and the homepage.
- In March, we deployed an upgrade to the topic matching in newcomer tasks. The current version offers 39 different topics using new ORES models.
- In April, we completed an A/B test of two homepage configurations. We learned that more newcomers will attempt suggested edits if the module is made more prominent. We are implementing those learnings in our next test. See the full results here.
- We are currently working on guidance for newcomer tasks. It will use the help panel to guide newcomers through completing easy edits.
- Our next step is to create new configurations of the homepage. The goal is to encourage more newcomers to begin doing suggested edits.
As usual, we are still welcoming your feedback and questions about our features. Please contact us on the project talk page!

Recent changes
- Some articles have tables that can be sorted in different ways. For example a list of countries can be sorted alphabetically but you can click on the size column to sort them by size. If you clicked on the column a second time it would sort the countries from the bottom to the top instead. A third click will now take you back to the original sorting. [80]
- Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. This means you should stop using some of them.
<b/>
is an example of a self-closed tag that won't work.area, base, br, col, embed, hr, img, input, keygen, link, meta, param, source, track, wbr
can be self-closed. Pages with tags that should not be self-closed have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. This doesn't affect<references />
or<ref />
. [81] - There is a banner called
WikidataPageBanner
. It is for example used by the Wikivoyages, Wikimedia Russia and the Catalan, Basque, Galician and Turkish Wikipedias. It will now been seen by mobile visitors too. Before this it was only seen on desktop. The wikis should update instructions onMediaWiki:Sitenotice
so that editors know to test and style for mobile too. [82][83]
Changes later this week
- You can now edit MassMessage descriptions through the API. This is useful for tools and gadgets. [84]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 June. It will be on all wikis from 11 June (calendar).
Future changes
- A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. It will not work after 13 July. Wikis should use TemplateStyles instead. 118 wikis need to fix this. You can read more and see if your wiki is affected. [85]

Editing news 2020 #2
Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter
This issue of the Editing newsletter includes information the Talk pages project, an effort to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily.
- Reply tool: This is available as a Beta Feature at the four partner wikis (Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian Wikipedias). The Beta Feature is called "Discussion tools". The Beta Feature will get new features soon. The new features include writing comments in a new visual editing mode and pinging other users by typing
@
. You can test the new features on the Beta Cluster now. Some other wikis will have a chance to try the Beta Feature in the coming months. - New requirements for user signatures: Soon, users will not be able to save invalid custom signatures in Special:Preferences. This will reduce signature spoofing, prevent page corruption, and make new talk page tools more reliable. Most editors will not be affected.
- New discussion tool: The Editing team is beginning work on a simpler process for starting new discussions. You can see the initial design on the project page.
- Research on the use of talk pages: The Editing team worked with the Wikimedia research team to study how talk pages help editors improve articles. We learned that new editors who use talk pages make more edits to the main namespace than new editors who don't use talk pages.

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020
Hello CAPTAIN MEDUSA,
- Your help can make a difference
NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.
- Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate
In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.
- Discussions and Resources
- A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
- Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
- A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
- Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.
